extremely helpful, but suffers from multiple author problem
This book is great for helping you get started analyzing all types of microarrays in R.However, the chapters are written by several different authors which causes the book to be a little disorganized.This is probably the case with many books that have contributed chapters.In the end, the technical information is there, sometimes you just have to visit a couple of different chapters.

it's not well organized
I find this book is not so good for people without any gene or microarray experiment background. It didn't even give clear definition of the basic concepts.
Another problem is that it's not well organized because every chapter is written by different authors who have different interest and preference and use slightly different terms for the same thing.

technically accurate but pedagogically flawed
If you're like me, you came upon this book because you decided to use R for analysis of microarray data, but you're mired in its gory and frustrating details.

Yes, you need a reference book. But not this one, and certainly not this edition.Better documentation can be found elsewhere (dare I say online?).

The code examples given are technically accurate and run as advertised, but they are of the "monkey see, monkey do" variety.They provide little intuition for how to use R for oneself, outside the covers of this text.For example, Chapter 23 discusses linear models for microarray data (using the "limma" package), and several code examples contain the parameter 'adjust = "fdr"'.The reader is never enlightened that this refers to a "false discovery rate" adjustment.

In other cases, example code is simply missing.Chapter 21 covers the Rgraphviz graphing library, with a figure showing the three common graphical layouts -- but no example code for producing these graphs is given (I had to find it outside the book).

For those trying to use R for computational biology, I recommend getting an overview of the R programming language first (Venables and Ripley's book "Modern Applied Statistics with S" is a great text), and only then wading into references such as this one, if at all.

Book contains many chapters to help get you started
I purchased this book to learn specific details and look at applications for the functions present in bioconductor.I have had trouble applying some of the chapters to custom data because they are written for specific microarray/data formats.Overall, this book is a good value because it contains examples of how bioconductor can be used to aid in hypothesis testing, but I struggle to apply what I have read to the different types of data I have.The section on Statistical analysis for genomic experiments and the section on gaphs and networks should be the reason you purchase this book. They are very helpful and interesting. The case studies were not very helpful in my opinion. ... Read more

A great read for executives too...
We are permanently debating ideas.This book is a great piece to cross pollinate more conventional management books.Very insightful examples and well thought discussion frameworks.Useful for those engaged in complex organizational set ups that require carefully staged discussions.

A Great Argumentation and Debate Text at a Great Price
I am currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Downtown teaching Communication Studies.I was recently assigned to teach argumentation and debate for the Fall of 2006.In the past I have used Freeley (now w/Steinberg) and Rieke and Sillars (now w/Peterson), but both of those books are in the $80 range.As most of our students work and tend to be the first in their respective families to go to college (we are a federally recognized Hispanic serving institution), expenses do matter.I noticed Dr. Snider's updating of Influencing through Argument seemed very affordable.

Frankly, it's quite a bit more approachable that some other argumentation texts, which should make it a much better read for my students.The section on research is particularly good for novice undergraduate researchers, and the section immediately following it on the use of evidence is simply outstanding.

Perhaps most importantly, this book is also an amazing value, even at it's list price of 24.95 (and can usually be had for less than that) which my students should very much appreciate.

Interesting tale of male friendship and celebrity
This is a good book, filled with personal anecdotes about JFK, Jr. and his life.The narrative is intimate and frank which makes it feel authentic.An interesting take on an interesting guy, who left us way too soon.

CAN I RATE THIS BOOK NO STARS???
After reading the book ( and then the Amazon reviews ) I feel justified in rating it "no stars".

Noonan has penned a self aggrandizing, utterly tiresome, story of his imagined friendship with John Jr.

His elitist tone is downright irritating. How nice for him that he can float around the Cape Cod islands on his pal's yachts. Like he contributed Something to the welfare of man.

From any standpoint this book is a "Dont Buy"

I enjoyed this book.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. I could imagine JFK Jr. and Billy Noonan conversing just like it was described on these pages. Very realistic and true to life. I appreciated the fact the events were not glossed over, and glamorized. Worth reading. I've read it a couple times already.

JFK Jr. Through His Friends Eyes
I loved this book!It was well written and had a lot of humor in it.I loved reading about his college years and the time he spent living in NY.It is very apparent that Jackie Kennedy Onassis did an AWESOME job raising her children...as John is grounded, ambitious, loyal, and dedicated enriching the lives of others...on top of being some serious guy candy (there were pictures in the book).I definately recommend it as it is a testament to this great man from one of his closest friends.

It's more about Billy than John
Difficult to stay awake or believe this slow-paced / grueling 7 CD's set. It quickly becomes obvious that Billy is selling Billy as John's "best friend" (BFF!) - even though John did not ask Billy to be his best man. Hummmm.

I do not doubt Billy knew John, however, there are many more clues that caused one to believe his story is embellished.

Great Book
This is a great reference book for everyone who is envolved is the music prodiction area (beginners and professionals). Lots of details but it isn't tiring to read.

Gives you a great overview!
I believe a lot of people are being unreasonably harsh in their reviews about this book. I do not know if this is because they could not understand what was written in it or maybe they thought they knew more than the author, I am not sure what the reason is, but this book contains a very good overview of the principles of audio. It explains somewhat thoroughly certain aspects of the audio production process and is a wonderful tool for audio technology students, such as myself.

Giving a low rate because of typos is irrelevant. If you want perfect grammar buy yourself a grammar book. If you wish the latest information about the latest gadgets do not refer to a book, books cannot update their informations, instead refer to the internet. If you want a good guide that will contain a lot of never changing information (such as frequency bands, basic audio principles and such), then this is your book. A lot of useful information has been compiled here and has been laid out with understanding and even some humor.

I like this book a lot and I believe it could be a very powerful tool to serious audio professionals and students. Of course, this is not the ONLY good book in this sphere, it is just a very good one.

Not perfect, but it's the best option out there
So, after reading numerous semi-negative reviews, I had to write to say that when used as intended (as a textbook for an audio recording class) this book stands head and shoulders above the competition.As someone who has worked in pro audio for 17 years and taught it at the University level for about 12 years, I have examined every available textbook out there and keep coming back to this one.Yes, it's too in-depth for someone trying to learn on their own without the benefit of a teacher.Yes, it may be a little too oversimplified for someone who already knows the ins and outs of microphone theory, wave propagation, studio acoustics, etc.And yes, there are a few sections that don't really belong in this book.But for guided study of the science of audio recording, you will not find a more comprehensive text anywhere.

How can I review this book when I never received it. The seller took my order and when I followed up 2 weeks later to ask about the shipping date, admitted that they didn't have it in stock.
