3-0 out of 5 stars Just the poor paper and printing make a difference
Excellent work done many many years ago, but still helpfull if you want to understand understanding. The empiricists is , in my view a code that I could do without. Locke had wonderful insignts, as early as 1630 in things we still can discuss.Berkeley and Hume did several things on their own, but it is good to have the esssential ideas all together in one book.
Only the poor presentation rests merits to the publisher, but give it a try, speciall y in this price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me
A comprehensive collection of their writings under the cover of one handy volume. Light in weight - heavy in content, but you get the data directly from these philosophers themselves for this is their original material. Makes you feel like a serious student of philosphy and the effort used to duplicate them will serve you well in your future ponderings. An important collection and a must if you wish to study the GREAT EMPERICISTS. ... KELLEYS IS A TEXTBOOK FOR THE PRACTICING PHYSICIAN. FAMILY PRACTITIONERS AND HOSPITALISTS BENEFIT MOST. PERHAPS THE NAME SHOULD BE CHANGED TO INTERNAL MEDICINE FOR FAMILY PRACTITIONERS AND HOSPITALISTS.I WOULD APPEAL TO OTHER PUBLISHERS TO BRING OUT A NEW EDITION OF THIS MOST EXELLENT AND HELPFUL TEXT.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most practical textbook in internal medicine
I have been using this book for many years. No new edition will ever come out. Dr. Humes, the chief editor, of this textbook in the reply to my email by one of his coworkers, he stated that " Dr. David Humes asked that I respond for him to your email of 5/8. He regrets to report that Kelley Textbook publisher, Lippincott Williams & WIlkins, is no longer publishing General Medicine textbooks and that he is unaware of any plans to publish a new edition of the Textbook. Dr. Humes appreciates, however, your kind and favorable comments regarding the Textbook.."

So no more new edition of Kelley's textbook of internal medicine in the market. What a great disppointment!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best volume of clinical medicine
I whole-heartedly agree with other reviewers. This book is a treasure in the midst of competing texts that simply do not offer the quality of Kelley's textbook.

This book does what others simply fail to do. Provide comprehensive, *practical*, and evidence-based medical management guidelines. Whereas most standard texts may provide such information about disease entities, Kelley's also recognises that patients most often present with diagnostic problems (such as hematuria or tremors) and thus devotes much attention to these. Each of these presentations is examined in terms of differentials (not just a list - you are given perspective and told what to look for in different subpopulations that present with the same complaint), then workup, treatment options, and followup considerations are explored. Facts aren't simply printed for the purpose of memorization (as is often the case in other texts); they are contextualized and presented in a manner that is useful to your goal of providing thorough and effective management options to your patients. I would also recommend this texts to medical students, as it is far easier to absorb information that is clinically and practically relevant rather than memorize those lists and flow diagrams (which at first glance may look concise and easy to study, but in the long term are actually difficult to remember).

Dr A.M.

5-0 out of 5 stars KELLEY'S IS THE CURRENT PACESETTER
Although relatively new in the game, (when compared to veterans like the Cecil's and the Harrison's), Kelley's Textbook of Internal Medicine is in a class of its own. This 3,200 pages of sound medical gospel is an all-round platinum winner.
It is a pacesetter in outlook: covering all branches of medicine in a veridicous way that is worthy of emulation.
If the current pace established by the 4th edition is sustained in the future, Kelley's will completely douse competition from both the Cecil's and the Harrison's texts.
It is hard to find flaws in this book; and I believe that many people would like to see what its CD-ROM version will look like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference text for practicing docs
An excellent reference text for the practicing primary care physicians. Concise, gives necessary info without a lot of minuta.Great bargain for the price. I trained using Cecil's and I feel this is as good for less money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WISDOM JOY AND GRACE FROM HIS MOST EMINENT HOLINESS POPE JOHN PAUL THE GREATER
This book grants us the joy and healing of experiencing the glorious and joyful wisdom and theology of the great and poor man who too quickly served us servants as Pope John Paul the First.

This book reveals how and why he must ever remain the First, the pre-eminent, the Greater of the John Pauls. This book reveals how nearly we remained a vibrant, vital, relevant, important, clarified, coherent, intelligent, loving, spiritual, challenging Church in the modern world, rather than the punishingly costly instrument for the personal mobilized self-glorification and brutally imposed limited vision of his successor. These words come from our final Universal, Apostolic, Catholic Pope, who does not as now treat the universal Church as a Germanic seminary classroom, passing out grades according to his particular orthodoxy.

For, this book reveals the great and universal compassion, joy and wisdom which was to be in continuation with the great Popes of joy John XXIII and of prudent widom Paul VI, rather than the decimated and crabby kingdom in which we now discover ourselves. Read this book to remember who we really are, and who we are really called to be.

Pope John Paul the Greater continued editing and revising this work of fictional letters to great figures of fiction and of history until shortly before his mysterious and unexpeceted death, having been named Pope in the briefest conclave in history. The title in Latin might read in English "To the great ones", "To the illustrious" but these letters certainly fell from the pen of a great and illustrious one.

We Catholics gratefully receive this message in lieu of the great prophetic encyclicals which would have called us all together in loving joy and compassionate mercy of Our Lord Jesus Christ, rather than dividing us along secular political lines like a Polish National subdiocese. Within these pleasant pages we find our true Faith in action.

Any Catholic, especially in the programs for new converts, and especially we veteran and life long practitioners of Roman Catholicism, find solid nourishment within these rare pages, and the eternal words of our faith as applied brilliantly to familiar modern paradigms. Letters are written by this great Pope to Mark Twain, GK Chesterton, Charles Dickens (and separately to the Pickwick Club), to Marconi, Petrarch and to Pinocchio, among many others. We also read here letters written to our great saints, including Saint Luke, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint Bonaventure, etc. The collection closes with a trepidatious memo to Jesus, which we must all dare to read to nourish our own communication with our Lord and Savior.

The collection opens with a very thoughtful, reflective and instructive general essay by John Cardinal Wright inspired by our brief Pope's infectious sincere smile, and a brief eulogy for the author by Father Angelo Beghetto.

Read it today, and dare to smile, and discover yourself and our Faith as you laugh out loud uncontrollably for joy, and weep, and remember. But it's all right. Jesus wept. ... Read more

Product Description
A Humean Critique of David Hume's Theory of Knowledge provides the first full-length Aristotilian-Thomistic critique of Hume's most mature and familiar work. While giving Hume proper respect and appreciation for his achievement, Jeremy White engages in a thoughtful critique through an approach based in Hume's own method. He successfully uncovers Hume's unconscious indebtedness to his seventeenth century predecessors, including Locke and Bacon, whom he persistently discredited. White's discovery of Hume's assumptions and premises for building his philosophy provide much enlightenment regarding his ideas. The author's intimacy with the processes of Hume's mind and from where he drew his conclusions translates into a tremendous ease and comfort in gaining an understanding of Hume's epistemology and his underlying metaphysical assumptions. ... Product Description
This is the first clear and non-technical introduction to philosophy through the works of the 18th century philosopher, David Hume. It covers every major philosophical issue commented upon by Hume, from epistemology, philosophy of mind, and metaphysics, to ethics and political philosophy, and the philosophy of religion. Looking first at Hume's discussion of each topic and clarifying his thoughts in jargon-free language, the book then relates his ideas to current contemporary thought. Readers are taken gently through both 18th century and contemporary philosophies and given lucid accounts of the key issues in each. Contents: Introduction; Where Does Thought Begin?; How Does Thought Proceed?; What Do We Mean by Cause and How Do We Reason from Experience?; What Do We Mean by Cause? II; Is It Rational to Be Guided by Experience?; What Is It to Believe that Something Is the Case?; Are Our Choices Free?; What Constitutes the Identity of a Person?; How Do Emotions Work?; The Mechanism of Sympathy; How to Make Moral Judgements; Is Religious Belief Rational? ...
