D'origine juive mais marqué par l'empreinte du christianisme et du bouddhisme, grand voyageur durant une longue partie de sa vie mais viscéralement attaché au paysage alsacien, il est le plus grand poète alsacien d'expression dialectale du XXe siècle. Fils d'un boucher kasher, Nathan Katz fréquente l'école primaire de son village natal et dès qu'il sait lire, dévore avec passion les brochures pour la jeunesse, puis très vite les grands classiques. L'œuvre théâtrale de Schiller et plus particulièrement Geschichte der Weltliteratur émerveillent le jeune Nathan. Il entre à l'usine Les Fils d'Emmanuel Lang comme employé à l'âge de quinze ans. Durant ses loisirs il compose ses premiers vers, qu'il porte à la rédaction du Mülhauser Tagblatt. En août 1914 Nathan Katz est blessé et est admis à l'hôpital de Tübingen. Une intervention chirurgicale lui évite la paralysie du bras droit. Après sa convalescence, il est affecté à un détachement de la Croix-Rouge de Fribourg-en-Brisgau. Their inventions in the area of geophysics and well logging were the beginnings of Schlumberger Well Services and the entire well logging industry. Conrad and Marcel were two of six children of an affluent French Protestant family. Their father, Paul, was descended from a wealthy cotton weaving family. Their mother, Marguerite Witt was a political activist. When the brothers were born, their native province Alsace was part of Germany. Their parents decided to send the brothers to Paris to be educated. Conrad became a physicist, and graduated from École Polytechnique (France) in 1900. Marcel became an engineer graduated from École Centrale Paris in 1907). Conrad initially worked as a mining engineer at Rodez and Toulouse. In 1912, Conrad, then a professor at the École de Mines de Paris conceived the idea of prospecting for metal ore deposits by using the electrical conductivity of ore rocks to distinguish them from the less conductive surrounding country rocks. One of the first tests was performed in a bathtub which was filled with various rocks for the experiments. In 1919, the brothers signed an agreement with their father in which their father would support their scientific research. Kastler was born in Guebwiller (Alsace) and later attended the Lycée Bartholdi in Colmar, Alsace, and École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1921. After his studies, in 1926 he began teaching physics at the Lycée of Mulhouse, and then taught at the University of Bordeaux, where he was a university professor until 1941. Georges Bruhat asked him to come back to the École Normale Supérieure, where he finally obtained a chair in 1952. Collaborating with Jean Brossel, he researched quantum mechanics, the interaction between light and atoms, and spectroscopy. Kastler, working on combination of optical resonance and magnetic resonance, developed the technique of "optical pumping". Those works led to the completion of the theory of lasers and masers. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1966 "for the discovery and development of optical methods for studying Hertzian resonances in atoms". He was president of the board of the Institut d'optique théorique et appliquée. Professor Kastler spent most of his research career at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris where he started after the war with his student, Jean Brossel a small research group on spectroscopy.
