5-0 out of 5 stars The Past Keeps Repeating Itself
Excellent book that is hard to find and one that should never go out of print. This book first came out in the early 1960's and sadly was not reprinted until the early part of the 21st century and it is now out of print once again. The world of Metternich and Castlereagh was one of finding peace, keeping your country strong while keeping the young aristocrats and military professionals from starting wars.Bismark ran into much the same problems when he was Chancellor of Prussia. The key to Metternich, Castlereagh and Bismark was diplomacy based on strength and cunning. When those that came after them saw diplomacy as weakness and opted for war, then eventually their empires came to an end.We saw the same problems in the Bush 43 administration; hence two wars that contiune to drain the economy and deplete the nation of young men and women who go off to war and die or are injured, not to mention the strained relations around the world. The outcome is a weakening of the nation state and eventual ruin. The empires of Britian, Austria and Prussia all ceased to exist when they threw diplomacy to the wind. Can the US escape the same circumstances by rebuilding diplomacy while maintining our military strength but not using it to go to war?Much like Sun Tzu's 'Art of War,' Kissinger's 'The World Restored' should be read by politicans, military professionals, business folks and the general populace at large.Democracy is based on conversation and no better way to have a conversation about history and diplomacy then by reading and discussing 'The World Restored.' Kissingers later book on Diplomacy pales in comparison to what is discussed in 'The World Restored.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Brillant, but don't misread it
This book was intended to be the first volume in a series that went up to WWI, but for obvious reasons Dr. Kissinger never finished the series. Many people have read this book and asserted that Metternich and Co. offered Kissinger his diplomatic roots, when in fact this is wrong.Do not read this book to understand Kissinger, read it to understand an often misunderstood era in history.Kissinger understood it better than anyone. ... Product Description

"No interviews about my private life" has always been Henry Kissinger's response to curious journalists. But journalist Evi Kurz from Furth, the Kissingers' hometown in southern Germany, proposed a family portrait and eventually managed to win the trust of both brothers. This is the story of two Americans of German-Jewish descent: one of them a key figure in Cold War diplomacy and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, the other a top businessman—two lives which are exemplars of the American dream. When Louis and Paula Kissinger's sons were born in 1923 and 1924, the Kissingers were part of a flourishing Jewish middle class in Furth, a large market town in northern Bavaria. But then Hitler came to power. Evi Kurz describes the gradual but remorseless destruction of Furth's Jewish community in the 1930s; the Kissinger family's emotional farewell to Germany in 1938 and their escape to New York; the family's war years in America; and the hugely successful careers in postwar America of both brothers, who nevertheless remembered and cherished their German home and roots.

2-0 out of 5 stars Well written but little content.
The book is a total of 229 pages - but if you take out the index and the author's story of how much work she had to do to get the Kissinger brothers to co-operate it is reduced to 180 pages. About 37 pages are devoted to photographs (mainly of poor quality) - most of which only occupy a quarter of the page (the rest of the page being blank). The typeface used is quite large further "spreading" the book and making it seem much more than it is.
Having said all that, I have to say that the book is very well written - but very abridged. I am sure that the full Kissinger story is very interesting and had Miss Kurz done a more complete job she could have produced a very good, readable book.
As it is I could only give the book 2 stars out of 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kissinger Analysis Before His Fame
This scholarly work of Henry Kissinger's reflects his powers of analysis before he developed politically, and is an observant study of NATO valuable to anyone interested in the subject.

On the original edition, the portion of the title "The Troubled Partnership" evidently appeared prominently on the cover.Book sales for this sort of work were about what one would expect, except in one small portion of the nation, where sales were remarkably robust. The publisher investigated, and found that the book had been placed not in "current events" or "history," but in the section of the store featuring books about marriage and family self-help. ... Product Description
Politico y diplomatico estadounidense (Fuerth, Alemania, 1923). /This is the story of a politician and diplomat (Fuerth, Germany, 1923). Product Description
The transatlantic relationship is under serious strain. The end of the Cold War, Europe’s continuing integration, and the new array of threats confronting the West have led Americans and Europeans alike to question the durability and utility of the Atlantic alliance. The transatlantic rift that opened over the war in Iraq significantly intensified these concerns.

This Task Force, established by the Council on Foreign Relations, examines the sources of recent tensions between the United States and Europe and lays out an agenda for renewing the Atlantic partnership.Led by Dr. Henry A. Kissinger, the former secretary of state and national security adviser, and current chairman of Kissinger Associates, Inc., and Dr. Lawrence H. Summers, the former secretary of the treasury and current president of Harvard University, the Task Force concludes that the United States and Europe should take advantage of their compatible interests and complementary capabilities to guard and extend the values and principles that continue to define the Atlantic community and to meet threats to their common purpose.

The Task Force, directed by Council Senior Fellow and Director of European Studies Charles A. Kupchan, makes specific recommendations for bridging the transatlantic divide, such as reaching agreement on new "rules of the road" governing the use of military force; forging a common policy toward irresponsible states; increasing cooperation through multilateral institutions; developing a common approach to the greater Middle East; adapting NATO to new geopolitical realities; and liberalizing and expanding the global economy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Role of the transatlantic factor in the new centrury
Renewing the Atlantic Partnership is is an excelent and practical report that emphasizes the responsibility of the Western countries towards the rest of the world at a juncture when both time and space have compressed so much. No doubt, the West and, for that matter, the Atlantic countries have been the engine behind the revolutionary changes in almost every aspect of human life. Consequently, they have a responsibility to resolve problems that arise as a sequel to the administration of such Western initiatives and ideas in shaping the Oriental minds.

The report is down-to-earth and does not divine any easy solution but seeks to consummate the gains while relying on tested methods of the commendable role played so far by the transatlantic alliance, multilateral institutions, spread of democratic ideas, the force component that can be provided by the NATO, joint approaches to solve conflicts and economic problems.

Predictably, a report like this can't be expected to contain new and untried methods. It is here that the integrity of the authors lie.

Product Description
The Machinery of Crisis examines for the first time the important role of crisis management in the making of U.S. foreign policy during the Nixon-Kissinger years. Notorious for their tight grip on the machinery of U.S. foreign policy, the book offers a critical account of the manner in which the president and his national security advisor dominated the structures and processes of foreign policy making. By drawing on a wealth of previously classified documents, Siniver reveals the story of the Washington Special Action Group, which managed foreign policy crises in the Nixon administration. In this thoroughly researched account of the performance of Nixon, Kissinger and the Washington Special Actions group in four international crises, Siniver provides a fresh analysis of the important relationship between individuals and the advisory system in the making of U.S. foreign policy during international crisis. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The realm of a significant intellect
It is almost impossible to do justice to this weighty tome.

This is a benchmark-by any consideration-pagination, intellectual mastery or sheer literary expression. It terms of sagacious insight, concentrated and logical thinking, it is in a class of its own.

Kissinger expresses himself with a clarity and power bordering on the poetic.
There are passages and pages which, for their sheer artistry and mastery, one can permanently savour. Here is nothing of the Spenglerian pomposity, or tortuous language found in so many intellectually-overburdened writings.
Its polished syntax makes the scribblings for which Nobel Prizes are commonly awarded, look patently silly.

Forget that the issues-Nixon, SALT, Vietnam, Communist hegemony, El Salvador etc- may be irrelevant now.

This is about entering the domain of an superbly astute man, and having the privilege of sharing his thinking.

Abandon the idea of `reading it', as if it is something to done. It is to be savoured and returned to again and again-like a fount of wisdom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the Subject
As of the date of publication, and for long thereafter, this was the best and most comprehensive book on the subject...

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting and Haunting Read...well written book
I was too young during the Vietnam war, but my heart goes out to those who served and were captured. Many were never seen or heard from again and this is very disheartening. As an American who served my country, I never imagined that they would not think these men were worth getting back. As Rambo said "I want what THEY want, for our country to love US as much as WE love IT." Pretty much says it all. I pray to God these men have passed on, rather than be forced into communist reeducation. Only God knows for sure. The writers have plenty of declassified info to back up their story, and there's NO reason not to get them back. It's the LEAST we can do for them.

4-0 out of 5 stars STill haunting us after all these years
I guess you have to be a Vietnam afficianado but this book hits a chord with me. I believe we left people behind and its sad. What we see now from our government makes you realize just how bad off we are these days and back in mine. Worth reading if you want to learn what goes in during times of war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dedicated to the real heroes of Vietnam!
Deceived by the government, about the fate of its other lostsons. Now, the compelling story of the fate of POWs is revealed in horrifying detail in The Men We Left Behind. The Men We Left Behind reveals that it was neither peace, nor honor, but blackmail and dishonor.

The Men We Left Behind is the definitive expose of this despicable fraud. The book includes compelling personal stories of individual POWs who were caught behind enemy lines and Pentagon lies. The authors name these POWs and tell their tragic stories.

The Men We Left Behind reveals how the Senate POW Committee, chaired by Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, in an effort to rush theCommittee's investigation and open trade with Vietnam, covered up the true story and protected Henry Kissinger and other U.S.officials as they concealed the truth.

Confirmed by interviews with returned POWs, sources within the KGB, The Men We Left Behind is a shocking indictment of Henry Kissinger, Richard Nixon, the Department of Defense and the Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on the POW/MIA Issue
This 1993 book covers the POW/MIA issue from World War II through theParis Peace Accords to the corruption in the 1991-1992 Senate SelectPOW/MIA committee.Sauter and Sanders expose the fraudulent POW/MIA"official" positions taken by the U.S. government.

The numberof documented examples along with critical analysis puts this book wayahead of those books supported by the U.S. government. If you want to seesolid documentation on the biggest scandal of the century then this book isa must read.
