Chapters: Oswald Avery, Simon Flexner, David Baltimore, Maclyn Mccarty, Joshua Lederberg, John Howard Northrop, Hubert Markl, Fritz Albert Lipmann, Leslie B. Vosshall, Leonor Michaelis, Sam Granick. Excerpt: The Rockefeller University is a private university which focuses primarily on basic research in the biomedical fields and offers postgraduate and postdoctoral education. It is located between 63rd and 68th Streets along York Avenue, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, New York. Its current president is Sir Paul Nurse. Twenty-three Nobel Prize winners have been associated with the university. The university has been the site of many important scientific breakthroughs. Rockefeller scientists, for example, established that DNA is the chemical basis of heredity, discovered blood groups, showed that viruses can cause cancer, founded the modern field of cell biology, worked out the structure of antibodies, developed methadone maintenance for individuals addicted to heroin, devised the AIDS "cocktail" drug therapy, and identified the weight-regulating hormone leptin. The original Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research was founded in 1901 by the oil baron and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, who had earlier founded the University of Chicago in 1889. The Rockefeller family has maintained strong links with the institution throughout its historyDavid Rockefeller, to give just one example, is the current Honorary Chairman and a Life Trustee. The Institute changed its name to The Rockefeller University in 1965, after expanding its mission to include education. Upon its organization in 1901, Simon Flexner assumed the directorship. Product Description
Bacterial conjugation' is the transfer of genetic material between bacteria through direct cell to cell contact, or through a bridge-like connection between the two cells. Discovered in 1946 by Joshua Lederberg and Edward Tatum, conjugation is a mechanism of horizontal gene transfer?as are transformation and transduction?although these mechanisms do not involve cell-to-cell contact. Bacterial conjugation is often incorrectly regarded as the bacterial equivalent of sexual reproduction or mating. At best, it can be considered to be a limited bacterial version of sex, since it involves some genetic exchange. In order to perform conjugation, one of the bacteria, the donor, must play host to a conjugative or mobilizable genetic element, most often a conjugative or mobilizable plasmid or transposon. Most conjugative plasmids have systems ensuring that the recipient cell does not already contain a similar element. The genetic information transferred is often beneficial to the recipient cell. Benefits may include antibiotic resistance, other xenobiotic tolerance, or the ability to utilize a new metabolite. Such beneficial plasmids may be considered bacterial endosymbionts. ... Read more

Product Description
This topical, handy volume is the perfect guide for physicians or scientists not specializing in the field, but wishing to understand exciting recent developments in cellular and molecular biology relevant to oncogene research. The terminology used in discussing oncogenes and their products is straightforwardly defined, and the concepts crucial to an understanding of oncogene research are clearly presented. Key topics are explored, including assay techniques used in molecular biology; methods for assessing behavior of normal genes and oncogenes; DNA and RNA tumor viruses; viruses inducing immunodeficiency; cellular proto-oncogenes and their relation to retroviral oncogenes; and possible roles of gene amplification and mutation, chromosomal translocation, and cellular growth factors in human cancer. An up-to-date survey of research on the major oncogenes and a discussion of the possibilities for future diagnostic and therapeutic applications of oncogene research are provided. The presentation is enhanced through many original illustrations, an appendix on oncogenes and related genes, and an up-to-date bibliography. ... Read more
