Product Description
Lying, stealing, and cheating behaviors can have profound implications for teachers and the students they serve. Deceptive behaviors tend to undermine any level of trust that students build over time. Once students develop a reputation for engaging in deception, they have a difficult time rebuilding their reputation. Lying, stealing, and cheating behaviors have other consequences as well. Unfortunately, these consequences may not be readily apparent to the student. For example, many teachers use the results of tests to help determine educational goals for their students. When students cheat on tests, the teacher bases instructional decisions on "false" information. Therefore, any changes to instruction may not have the intended results. ... Read more

Product Description

This captivating new book, a milestone in Buddhist and comparative studies, is a compilation of seventeen essays celebrating the work and thought of Nolan Pliny Jacobson.

A profoundly motivated interdisciplinary thinker, Jacobson sought to discover, clarify, and synthesize points of similarity among leading thinkers of different Oriental and Western cultures. For almost half a century, he articulated his vision of an emerging world civilization, one in which all people can feel and express their creative, constructive powers for the benefit of others as well as for themselves.

Jacobson believed that philosophy and the works of philosophers should be understood as a vital force enriching all civilizational experience. His own philosophic perspective was rooted in the conviction that novelty is the source of all experience and the center of a creativity that lives beyond words, arguments, and rational paradigms. Throughout his career, Jacobson explored Buddhist texts and personalities, spending much time in the Orient, particularly Myanmar and Japan. He also closely studied the works of numerous Western philosophers, including Whitehead, Dewey, Peirce, James, Hartshorne, and Wieman. Jacobson believed that American philosophy and Buddhism concurred in many ways, with the potential to form a powerful basis for the development of a world civilization.

The essays in this volume are organized around Jacobson’s activities, publications, and interests. Authored by an impressive selection of scholars, the essays are grouped into four sections—"Historical Context," "Central Issues," "Practical Implications," and "The Japan Emphasis." Hajime Nakamura, Charles Hartshorne, Kenneth K. Inada, Seizo Oho, and numerous others discuss freedom, creativity, and Buddhism’s self-corrective nature, setting forth their reasons for sharing Jacobson’s ideas and visions.

Product Description

Provides a politically and historically informed review of Cuban archaeology, from both American and Cuban perspectives.

Many Americans are aware of the political, economic, and personal impacts of the U.S. embargo on Cuba. But the communication blockade between scholars has also affected the historical course of academic disciplines and research in general. With the easing of restrictions in the 1990s, academics are now freer to conduct research in Cuba, and the Cuban government has been more receptive to collaborative projects.

This volume provides a forum for the principal Cuban and American archaeologists to update the current state of Cuban archaeological research--from rock art and potsherds to mortuary practices and historical renovation--thereby filling in the information gap created by the political separation. Each group of researchers brings significant new resources to the effort, including strong conservation regulations, innovative studies of lithic and shell assemblages, and transculturation theories. Cuban research on the hacienda system, slavery, and urban processes has in many ways anticipated developments in North American archaeology by a decade or more. Of special interest are the recent renovation projects in Old Havana that fully integrate the work of historians, architects, and archaeologists--a model project conducted by agreement between the Cuban government and UNESCO.

The selection of papers for this collection is based on a desire to answer pressing research questions of interest for North American Caribbeanists and to present a cross-section of Cuban archaeological work. With this volume, then, the principal players present results of recent collaborations and begin a renewed conversation, a dialogue, that can provide a foundation for future coordinated efforts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Complete Synthesis of an Important Period in Southeastern Prehistory
This book, the third in a series of edited volumes on southeastern archaeology, is a richly detailed synthesis of what is known about the Woodland period in the Southeastern United States - that is, the time between the end of the Archaic period, roughly 3,000 years or so before the present, and the rise of the Mississippian cultures in much of the Southeast around 900 - 1000 A.D.

Some of the best discussions concern the rise of the use of ceramics (Sassaman's chapter on the relationships between the different fiber-tempered ceramic series is excellent, as are Stephenson, Bense et. al.'s on certain of the Gulf coastal cultures) and the forms of social and political complexity arising in the time of the Woodland cultures. My only complaint with this book, as with much of southeastern archaeology until recently, is an insufficient emphasis on systems of belief in cultural practice in most of the chapters, though this in no way detracts from the excellent work of most of the authors.

I recommend this book to both the professional archaeologist and the layman who wants to understand what was happening among the Native American cultures of the southest during the Woodland period.

4-0 out of 5 stars A synthesis of major research themes and findings
"The Woodland Period ( ca. 1200 BC to AD 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this 2000 year era the peoples of the South East experienced inceasing sedentism, population growth and organizational complexity. At the begining of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely boundby collective burial rituals. But bythe 1st melenium AD, some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centres rules by hereditary elites. maize was now the primary food crop. Perhapes most importantly, the ancient animal focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with each other.

This volume synthesises the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about, while analyzing the periods archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland period, the editors have highlighted major themes and given primary sources".

Eighteen of the papers were presented at the 55th annual meeting of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference in Greenville, South Carolina on November 12 1998.

The 25 chapters are: (WP= Woodland Period)
-An Introduction to Woodland Archaeology in the Southeast
-WP archaeology of the Central Mississippi Valley
-Plum Bayou Culture of the Arkansas-White River Basin
-WP archaeology of the Lower Mississippi Valley
-Fourche Maline: A WP culture of the Trans-Mississippi South

-Aspects of Deptford and Swift Creek of the South Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains

3-0 out of 5 stars Good if you like this style, but avoid the eBook
The Cummings text is less readable than the Bailey version.Cummings has more detail of the results of studies and Bailey has broader brush strokes.I think this comes down to preference.

I am very disappointed, however, in the poor functionality of the electronic version of the Cummings book.About half of the time that I log on, the eBook doesn't work.I have contacted customer service multiple times and each time they say they're working on it.Eventually I got fed up and asked them if it would be reasonable to have either a refund for the eBook or to have a credit, they gave me the following response.(Buyer beware!)

Dear Chris,

1-0 out of 5 stars Would not recommend
Although the back cover and the online advertising information claim that all chapters have fully explained answers, nearly 50% of questions have multiple-choice answers with no explanations. One chapter actually says "no answers provided".The questions and answers are poorly edited. There are some board-relevant questions in this book, but overall I would not recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars sometimes better, sometimes worse
I am one of the few people in my dept that buy each and every edition of this book, but it seems that I can't throw away the older ones, in may subjects it seems to be getting better, specially when you are talking about genes or dealing with cancer, but in other areas it is getting worse, like dealing with vocal fold paralysis or sleep apnoea.

3-0 out of 5 stars acceptable
I was disappoited on buying the CD-ROM version of this text. I found it incomplete (ie NO mention on Otoplasty despite being advertised by the authers as the MOST comprehensive text in this field !, and I found it innacurate with plenty of mistakes.
It is otherwise a versatile instrument for reference and revision

There is no access to the authors for feedback comments etc.

From the supplier: Stericycle Inc VP Linda D. Lee called on hospital risk managers attending the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management annual meeting to audit healthcare worker compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Administration's (OSHA) rules on blood-borne pathogens. Citing the variations in the techniques healthcare workers use to protect themselves against AIDS that she has witnessed, Lee warned that violation of OSHA standards have occasioned $500,000 in penalties. OSHA regulators have also increased inspection of hospital medical wastes.
