Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Umberto Eco (born 5 January 1932) is an Italian medievalist, semiotician, philosopher, literary critic and novelist, best known for his novel The Name of the Rose (Il nome della rosa, 1980), an intellectual mystery combining semiotics in fiction, biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory. Eco is President of the Scuola Superiore di Studi Umanistici, University of Bologna, and an Honorary Fellow of Kellogg College, University of Oxford. He has also written academic texts, children's books and many essays. Eco was born in the city of Alessandria in the region of Piedmont (northern Italy). His father, Giulio, was an accountant before the government called upon him to serve in three wars. During World War II, Umberto and his mother, Giovanna, moved to a small village in the Piedmontese mountainside. Eco received a Salesian education, and he has made references to the order and its founder in his works and interviews. His family name is supposedly an acronym of ex caelis oblatus (Latin: a gift from the heavens), which was given to his grandfather (a foundling) by a city official. His father was the son of a family with thirteen children, and urged Umberto to become a lawyer, but he entered the University of Turin in order to take up medieval philosophy and literature, writing his thesis on Thomas Aquinas and earning his Laurea in philosophy in 1954. During this time, Eco left the Roman Catholic Church after a crisis of faith. After this, Eco worked as a cultural editor for the state broadcasting station Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) and also lectured at the University of Turin (195664). She was also the subject of a joke in the British TV Program "Have I Got News for You", which also poked fun at the TV Channel Dave's habit of constantly repeating TV Programs, years after the original was first shown. It went as follows "She is now 100 years old, or if you are watching the repeat on Dave dead." (At time of writing she is still alive, which the announcer on Dave when this episode appeared went to great lengths to announce.) Product Description
... Product Description

Italian neurologist Rita Levi-Montalcini’s distinguished career in neuroscience is matched only by her extraordinary life.  The Hourglass of Life is Levi-Montalcini’s inspiring memoir of her experience as a revolutionary woman in science.

Born in Turin in 1909, she was driven by a passion for issues of equality and social justice and enrolled in medical school, receiving her degree in medicine and surgery in 1936. In 1938, fascist Italy’s racial laws forced her, like many other Italian Jews, to leave her native country; but she returned to Italy while World War II was still ongoing raging, hiding on a family farm in the Italian countryside near Piemonte, where she continued her research. She set up a small laboratory in her bedroom to study the developing nervous systems of chicken embryos using eggs brought to her by neighboring farmers. For this work and their further research on nerve growth factor, she and her colleague Stanley Cohen were ultimately awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

In this lively and engrossing book, one of the foremost scientists of our time turns her attentive eye toward her experiences both as a Jew in fascist Italy and as a pioneering woman in medicine.
