This fascinating biography looks at the life of Nelson Mandela, placing his
awe-inspiring accomplishments in historical context for a new generation
to admire. On a February day in 1994, Mandela visited Robben Island,
a desolate rock where he had been held during his twenty-seven years as
a prisoner. Days later, he triumphed in an election that rescued South
Africa from the climate of oppression that had held sway for so long. By
New York Times executive editor, Bill Keller, this inspiring biography looks
at the events that led Mandela from his tribal homeland to the center of the
struggle for racial equality in South Africa. From early acts of protest to
the leadership of an apartheid-free nation, this is an honest portrayal of a
modern political and social icon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
TREE SHAKER is a very informative and colorful book written by Bill Keller, the Executive Editor of The New York Times. The entire book is written like one long article, broken up by chapters and festive with many colorful pictures.

It tells the story of Nelson Mandela's life -- from childhood to becoming the first black South African president -- and his impact on South Africa and the world.

This book was very informative; somewhat like a history textbook but with many colorful pictures and interesting story and dialogues in between the factual parts.

This book is highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn about the life of a man who impacted the world with his brilliance and determination for black equality among a white supremacist country.

"It is my wish that the voice of the storyteller never die in Africa."—Nelson Mandela, from the foreword

The vibrant tradition of African folktales—an oral heritage that predates Ovid and Aesop—is long and varied, but to date it has been largely overlooked in the West. Aware of this gap, Nelson Mandela selected thirty-two stories, many of them translated from their original tongues, to show the seminal role of African folklore in world literature. We meet tricksters from Zulu folklore; we hear the voices of the scheming hyena and learn from a Khoi fable how animals acquired their tails and horns. These fables present a veritable bible of stories "universal in their portrayal of humanity, beasts and the mystical." Winner of the NAACP Image Award. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Collection of Tales
If you are at all considering getting a collection of folk tales, get this one. I liked it so much I'm using it in a college research writing course I'm teaching. Very readable, fascinating tales of all kinds. Honestly, the only story that didn't impress me was the final one, and other than that one tale, I'm sure there is plenty to satisfy anybody. The stories reveal quite a bit about the African cultures they derive from, but they also compare well to other mythic stories, fables, and traditions, and are thus a great addition to an overall exploration of world folk myth.

The stories are great for children, too, and I found myself reading a few of the stories to my kids at bedtime. They were sad when the book was finished, for they, too, really enjoyed the tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great stories for your grandchildren and students
These stories are folk tales edited by Nelson Mendela who compiled these for his grandchildren. I used this book for plays and readings when teaching in Namibia. The tenth thru twelveth gradel class loved these stories and it helped them to enjoy Animal Farm. Fellow Fulbrighters' children also expressed an interest, so I provided them with chapters from the book. I also e-mailed them to my grandchildren in Scottsdale Arizona and they loved them. The talking animals often lead us to a morality play conclusion that is not specific to any culture. Further, each story, while written for children up to the age of 10, uses words unique to southern african cultures. A few of the these unique words are not easily found in a dictionary, but one can guess the nature of the meaning of the mysterious word from the context of the story. It is a wonderful window into village life in Africa and provides an important and different world view and explanation of how things came to be the way they are. It is also a fun book to read to younger children who are not yet reading on their own. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a book about a many-sided man whose legacy is his unquenchable desire to spend himself for the well-being of others. Through a series of stories told by men and women about how Nelson Mandela touched their lives, the book shows what it is that has made him one of the greatest people of our time: the way he has managed to inspire people through ordinary human actions. Here in essence are some of the key qualities of great leadership.

Most of the stories in this book are from ordinary men and women. A few came from newspapers, television and magazines. Whether they happened exactly as they are narrated is not important. What is true about these stories is that they are an attempt by people to describe the âMadiba phenomenonâ. They are a way in which people seek to treasure what Mandela has taught the world. Their significance lies in their ability to inspire those that share and listen to them.

Product Description

Everyone should know the life story of Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest leaders of all time, the first black president of South Africa, the most famous African, and a major world statesman. His inspiring life receives a fresh retelling in this new biography written especially for students and general readers. This volume is an enjoyable, authoritative, and balanced way to not only understand a great man, but also to understand a critical time in world history and race relations. Mandela's quest for racial justice for black South Africans as a leader of the African National Congress led to twenty-seven years of imprisonment. South African Apartheid consumed the attention of the world, coming to a head in the 1980s. With intense international pressure on the Apartheid government, Mandela was finally freed in 1990. Through the landmark presidency of South Africa and post Nobel Peace Prize years up until today, he has continued as a peacemaker and agent for change.

Chapter 1 covers his birth into a strong Xhosa family and clan, with cultural, historical, and geographical context, and the next chapter follows his elite education path, taking into consideration the forces and people who helped shape the future leader. Chapter 3 discusses his law practice, African National Congress work, and his first wife. Chapters 4-6 continue with his growing political involvement and family. Chapter 7 and 8 deal with the long imprisonment and then freedom. The final chapters discuss his presidency and Nobel Peace Prize and life today. A timeline, photo essay, and selected bibliography complement the narrative.

Peaceful Protest: The Life of Nelson Mandela is a biography telling the story of Nelson Mandela's life, beginning with his childhood and ending with his retirement from public office in 1999.Significant events are described, including Mandela's imprisonment for fighting apartheid, his being elected the first black president of the Republic of South Africa, and his winning of the Nobel Peace Prize for his dedication to peace.

This book is appropriate for ages 8 through 11.I would use this book in a school setting. The illustrations, which were made using gouache on watercolor paper, interpret the story appropriately. However, while they may be appealing to children because of their bright colors and childlike quality, I feel that more traditional African illustrations and photographs would be more appropriate for the subject matter.A hand-drawn map of South Africa appears on the endpapers. ... Beginning in a jail cell and ending in a rugby tournament- the true story of how the most inspiring charm offensive in history brought South Africa together

After being released from prison and winning South Africa's first free election, Nelson Mandela presided over a country still deeply divided by fifty years of apartheid. His plan was ambitious if not far-fetched: use the national rugby team, the Springboks-long an embodiment of white-supremacist rule-to embody and engage a new South Africa as they prepared to host the 1995 World Cup. The string of wins that followed not only defied the odds, but capped Mandela's miraculous effort to bring South Africans together again in a hard-won, enduring bond. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars my first book in english
if you want to know about south africa, Nelson Mandela and the transition from apartheid times to democracy, this is the right book and if you are rugby fun, this book is perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving, Powerful, True
I watched the movie Invictus and enjoyed it, so I thought I'd try the book Playing the Enemy. Turns out the movie was very faithful to the book as well. What makes this so much more than just another Cinderella/underdog sports story? The timing of this World Cup Rugby match. I don't pretend to understand Rugby, and you don't need to - it's really about how Nelson Mandela, soon after being released from prison, seizes an opportunity to use rugby to help unite South Africa.

After years of repression, apartheid, white supremacy rule, the Blacks had elected Mandela as their new president of South Africa. Both white and black radicals wanted revenge, power - violence was breaking out. How to stop it? By using the very symbol of white racism - the South African rugby team - Nelson Mandela gave everyone something they could support, a cause to rally behind. It ain't crazy if it works, and this actually worked. He got the blacks to see the rugby team as belonging to all of South Africa, no longer something that only the whites would watch.

What makes this book work so well are the characters behind the history. Of course the successful change from white rule to free elections was made possible by more than just a rugby game, but the author shows how many different approaches Nelson Mandela used to ensure peace. The focus is on the people - the game, the politics and strife remain in the background. This is not by any means an exhaustive history of the end of apartheid, but rather a very compelling piece of that story. Very uplifting and motivating, that in of itself, makes for a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible reporting
Carlin, who was stationed as a reporter in South Africa from 1989-1995, chronicles the steps that Nelson Mandela took in unifying South Africa through rugby. The book was the basis for the movie Invictus. Simply, the book is a fascinating read. Carlin reports on all of the key behind-the-scenes events, talks to all of the major players (both athletically and politically) and weaves together the story of how South Africa avoided major civil war, using sport as a way of bringing people together, in the ending of apartheid. I learned a great deal from this book, starting with the importance of rugby in South Africa, and how Mandela made all the right moves in bringing both blacks and whites on his side. I thought the movie Invictus focused too much on the actual rugby; the book has all the sociological details a historian would want. I would recommend this book to anyone who believes that sports unifies people more than any other part of society, or to anyone who wants the details of how South Africa changed its political ways so quickly. It's easily one of the top 10 books I've ever read, maybe top 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!!!!!
This book is brilliant!!! It explains why Nelson Mandela is such an inspiration for the human race, and it does it in a factual, honest way that includes the bigger perspective, in other words, its not a personal account of Nelson's life, rather, its a personal account of the merging of Nelson's life and South Africa's life. It is BRILLIANT!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!
As a simple story about an underdog national rugby team beating all odds to win a championship, this would be a very good story. What makes this story great, is that team has been chosen (by newly elected South African president Nelson Mandela) as a way to unite a South Africa torn by divisions caused by decades of government enforced segregation of blacks and pave the way for reconciliation between bitter enemies. Can the Springboks, a symbol of the old segregated government, truly make their motto "One Team, One Country" come true?

If you have watched "Invictus" be assured that this book has much more of the background to the people and events portrayed by the movie. The added detail gives one a sharper understanding of many of the principle characters in the movie and the true scope of Mandela's brilliance.

Highly recommended! ... Read more

Product Description
In June 1995, Nelson Mandela conquered the hearts of white South Africa and united his country, black and white, behind their rugby team. This book tells the extraordinary story of the journey to that moment. As the day of the final of the 1995 Rugby World Cup dawned, and the Springboks faced New Zealand's all-conquering All Blacks, more was at stake than a sporting trophy. When Nelson Mandela appeared wearing a Springboks jersey and led the all-white Afrikaner-dominated team in singing South Africa's new national anthem, he conquered the hearts of white South Africa. "Playing the Enemy" tells the extraordinary human story of how that moment became possible. It shows how a sport, once the preserve of South Africa's Afrikaans-speaking minority, came to unify the new rainbow nation, and tells of how - just occasionally - something as simple as a game really can help people to rise above themselves and see beyond their differences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars How He Did It
Playing The Enemy aka (Invictus) written by John Carlin, depicts how Mandela used rugby to unite a divided country. Many Black South Africans saw rugby as the White South Africans' second religion. White South Africans lived and breathed rugby. It was their "opium." To snatch their rugby world from beneath the feet they used to cripple, trample, and oppress the nonwhite citizens of South Africa would be a devastating yet effective blow to the White man's ego. Under the leadership of Arnold Stofile, that is exactly what the anti-apartheid group, the African National Congress (ANC), accomplished. In 1985, the ANC managed to stop the South African Springbok's tour of New Zealand. The ANC also led an international boycott that banned South Africa from participating in the 1987 and 1989 Rugby World Cup, because of the harsh treatments of nonwhite citizens under the cruel system of apartheid. Again, they succeeded. This infuriated the South African government and supporters of rugby. The government retaliated and staged enormous disturbances, chaos, and attacks throughout black townships.

As the international climate continued to change, more countries showed public outraged criticizing South Africa's apartheid system of government. Many called for the release of Nelson Mandela. Because of internal and external pressures, South Africa's government had to act. They faced two options. They could either go to war or negotiate a system of power with their oppressed citizens. They chose to negotiate.

The atmosphere was thick with fear and anxiety. Most White South Africans feared a majority rule government. They feared the unknown. They feared losing their statuses. That fear led some White South Africans to take up arms, join White supremacy groups, and revolt against the government if necessary. They had been taught from birth that their skin color made them superior over the other races. Black South Africans feared the prospect of Whites resistance to change. They feared supporting a team like the Springbok.

Although a political prisoner at the time, Mandela convinced the South African government to meet with him to discuss necessary and inevitable changes in the structure of the South African government. However, before these clandestine meetings occurred, Mandela spent years learning about his adversaries. He learned their language and history. He understood how they operated. He grasped the need for South Africa to move forward in peace and unity as one country. He decided to make an appeal to his enemies' hearts and not to their minds. This technique proved beneficial for Mandela as a prisoner and later as president. That is why rugby became the necessary channel for change. To encourage harmony in South Africa, Mandela and the ANC lifted the ban on South Africa's rugby team and allowed them to participate in the international games and world cup events. With fingers crossed, Mandela and the ANC hoped this move would not only lift the spirits of their White citizens but show them that the new government was reaching out to them. They also hoped that Black South Africa, who once saw the Springbok as a symbol of apartheid, will now see the Springbok as their team too.

5-0 out of 5 stars See the Movie--THEN read the book. You'll see what I mean.
See the Movie, THEN Read the Book! And no, it's not all about rugby and the team. Sure, the book begins on the day of the Springboks' Rugby World Cup game against the New Zealand All-Blacks (so named for the color of their uniforms). Sure, it introduces us Yanks to the Springboks. But, in the following chapters, it retraces Mandela's life, 27-year imprisonment, his election to President, and finally to presenting the 1995 Rugby World Cup to the Springboks. It shows us a South Africa we thought we'd never see, let alone believe in. In fact, about two-thirds of the book covers Mandela's and others' lives, and much fascinating history, how Mandela turned a 27-year sentence into not bitter revenge but change, reconciliation, and uniting South Africans. While in prison, a rare strong seed was planted in the brain and heart of a man who had every reason to plot revenge against the injustices done to him, but the seed was nurtured and finally blossomed a few years before his release to make him speak truth to power as the world's most famous prisoner whom everyone wanted to free. Actually, he was still in effect the African National Council (ANC)'s leader. In the 27 years he aged from a young, husky warrior with a powerful Muhammad Ali-boxer's physique into a mellow, slender, and gracefully aged yet strong Xhosa elder (he was of chiefly ancestry), whose handsome Xhosa features were framed by a full crown of crinkly silver hair. He looked tired when he left prison but some of those wrinkles left as he became accustomed to freedom. As in the poem Invictus he was the master of his fate and the captain of his soul, prepared for anything and anyone, unfailingly courteous and respectful and even courtly to friend and foe, high and low, and, when necessary, he was blunt and straight. Like America's great man of peace, the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mandela had a dream, so he did not flinch frompresidents such as Botha, de Klerk, old biAfrikaner generals, who could have let him rot in prison until he died but listened to him instead, even while he was in prison.Even there, he had a special power, which he used for the good of all, and by sheer will and desire to reach out to all including the Afrikaners and African opposition leaders to the ANC.If another, earlier book and subsequent film were not titled "The Power of One," it would be supremely apropos to Mandela. As it was, his theme "One Team, One Country" is "close enough for government work!

Carlin reviews the lives of many other prominent people--the mighty Springbok captain Francois Pienaar and other hulking Springboks as well. A man who was on Death Row and innocent of a crime was freed at Mandela's request while Mandela was in jail!At first meeting, ignoring advice, he even asked the Great Crocodile, P.W. Botha, to release his friend Walter Sisulu, who was in bad health, and Botha complied.

One must read this book twice because it is such an incredible story you won't believe it the first time you read it. Absently reading it aloud in my living room (I live alone with three very stoic, baffled cats who already doubt my sanity), I had to hear the words I was reading to believe them. A myriad of emotion, tears, and laughter leapt out at me, and I was caught up in it. Some details necessarily absent from the two-hour film were covered, so Carlin answered every curious question I had.

Mind you, though Carlin's love, frank awe, and admiration of Mandela are obvious he doesn't glorify Mandela, or make Mandela a Pollyanna, or a saint.Nor should should this be mistakenly called a feel-good book. It makes him very human, with manipulative skills (and a bit of a showmanship), but what a guy!Mandela makes everyone he meets feel welcome. This author took me to the heart of South Africa with Mandela, in prison, to the halls of the last bastion of Afrikaner Nationalism where the old warrior amazed the leaders, and finally with the man as he took old guard South Africa into his embrace and then offered HIS idea: One Team, One Country. Carlin tells of how Mandela removed fear of Black retribution from the Afrikaner and hate and resentment from the Black majority, and replaced it with inspiration for a victory for all of his countrymen, women, and children, meeting and talking to the Springboks' captain, Francois Pienaar, using sports as the master key to winning first the World Cup, then South Africa for all.It didn't happen overnight--it took years, and Carlin tells us how it was done by Mandela, first as negotiator from prison, advisor out of prison, and then President and co-Nobel Prize winner with F. W. de Klerk, then presenter of the World Cup to his "boys" the Springboks.

At last (and by this time I was so caught up in it as to be sweating with exhaustion and my three cats were sitting up staring in dismay at me!) with Mandela striding onto the field, and get this--beaming ear to ear and wearing the Springbok #6 (Pienaar's number) jersey and the green and gold cap, presenting the World Rugby Cup to the Champion Springboks--to the Captain, towering three inches over six-foot-one Mandela--Francois Pienaar--who, overcome with emotion, was afraid to speak for fear of breaking down in tears. All they could do for a moment or two was burst into laughter and joy.Pienaar and the Boks had bonded with Mandela who became their number one fan over the past year and had come to love him like a father. Pienaar knew this was also a political moment of triumph for all of South Africa--his own people, the Afrikaners, as well. The entire stadium burst into ear-splitting cheers, song, and screams of laughter, and unashamed crying by (1) people who never thought they'd ever live to ever be admitted into the sacrosanct Springboks stadium and (2) people who once felt they'd be contaminated if they even bumped into an African. Somehow, they were realizing that the invisible racial and cultural barriers were of the mind and heart, and they were nonexistent. No, there weren't 60,000 spectators who cheered the Boks and the architect of all of this glory--Mandela--that day, it was approximately 45 million South Africans. ... Read more

Nelson Mandela--is it possible to say who or what he is?Yes, he was one of the world's longest-detained political prisoners. He is a universal symbol of social justice certainly; an exemplary figure connoting non-racialism and democracy; a moral giant. For years a man cut off from the world, Mandela became after his 1990 release an internationally recognizable icon. But why should his story be important to us in the world at large today? What do his achievements signify not only nationally in South Africa but also internationally? This book is about the different, interconnected stories, histories, values and symbols that Nelson Mandela embodies. Product Description
In an age of cynical politics and mutual distrust, Nelson Mandela's moral courage and generosity of spirit proved the key to effecting a peaceful end to apartheid in South Africa in 1994.There is perhaps no other leader in the world today who elicits the same admiration and respect.

In this, the first full-scale biography of Nelson Mandela, Martin Meredith vividly captures the epic arc of a life defined by struggle against the brutality of apartheid and its eventual defeat. He provides fascinating insights into the enduring friendships Mandela forged among whites and blacks alike, into the influential role played by his communist colleagues, and into his turbulent personal life.

As a champion of peace and a father of a new nation, Nelson Mandela is a hero in a world where heroes are few in number; Meredith's brilliant biography stands as a tribute to that heroism.Amazon.com Review
Born in 1918, Nelson Mandela's initial response to theinstitutionalized racism of South Africa was a militant belief inAfrican control and distrust of collaboration with whites. Thiscomprehensive biography by British journalist Martin Meredith draws on interviewswith Mandela and colleagues to trace his evolution from politicalprisoner to leader of a multiracial democracy. Meredith alsocogently depicts the complex personality of an autocratic, oftenremote man "more at ease with strangers than ... friends," whosacrificed much of his private life to the collective struggle.Nelson Mandela is essential reading for understanding modern South Africa. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A current day hero
The writer does an excellent job filling in the background of apartheid and the actions of the South African government in the early 1900's and the 1950's when the most reprehensible government policies were created.Thedescriptions of the country's jails and Mandela's stay at Robbin Islandmakes you ill but increase your respect for Mandela and all other politicalprisoners.Meredith also does a good job describing the sulkiness of DeKlerk and his disappointment at not being recognized equally as Mandela forending apartheid...maybe if he had been in prison for 29 years... ...
