Product Description
At the beginning of the 1995 soccer season, Hans van der Meer set out to take photographs of the game that dodged the clich»d traditions of modern sports photography. In an attempt to record the sport in its original form--a field, two goals and 22 players--he sought matches at the bottom end of the amateur leagues. He avoided tight telescopic details and the hyperbole of action photography, pulled back from the central subject of the pitch, and set the playing field and its unfolding action in the context of local elements. Over the last 10 years, Van der Meer has continued this project across the playing fields of Europe, traveling to every country with a significant history of the game. The Netherlands yielded 1998ís Dutch Fields, and the odyssey that brings forth European Fields has since taken him from Bihariain, Romania to Sweden, from Torp, Norway to Hungary, from Bartkowo, Poland to Beire, Portugal, and to urban and suburban Greece, Finland, England, France, Germany, Scotland, Switzerland, Holland, Slovakia, Denmark, Ireland, Wales, Belgium, Spain and Italy. Van der Meerís understated observations of the poetry and absurdity of human behavior on the field use soccer to consider--and provoke a laugh at--the human condition. Also available in a large-format hardcover edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is a wonderful book and a new favorite of mine.I'm interested in sports as part of our cultural landscape and growing up in Sweden this book is right up my alley. The images are so well composed and really shows the soccer fields and game action as foreground objects and how it fits into the environmental landscape.

The variety of landscapes, playing surfaces, time of year, light and mood is impressive while remaining consistent. If you appreciate really good landscape photography, and perhaps not soccer per se, I think you will still enjoy this book.I appreciate the photographers investment in time and to his vision as he could have easily and much faster photographed this project when the soccer fields were empty.Focusing on the lower division venues where players are non-professional is also so much more interesting in this era of sports stardom and reality/celebrity culture. ... Product Description
This book is written for the biochemist, biophysicist or cell biologist, who is interested in applying Resonance Energy Transfer to study proteins, membranes and other biological systems. It is a handbook that provides a wealth of information an Förster distances, quantum yields and other spectroscopic parameters, and can, therefore, assist in choosing the Donor-Acceptor pairs that are most suitable for tackling the problem at hand. The book also gives a clear and virtually complete overview of the theory including limits on the orientation factor, effects of motion on transfer, concentration depolarization, and limitations of the technique. It contains a large number of tables and diagrams, is accessible to the beginning graduate student and is suitable as a supplementary text for courses on biophysical techniques. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chateau Lafitte Rothschild of Tennis Instruction
In the last 30 years of tennis expansion and popularity, there have been numerous "instruction" books to satisfy every flavor ofTV tennis idol tennis fandom requires. Perhaps you are one who acquired those "hip" strokes of your favorite player and you can compete reasonably well. But when you slip into sloppiness or erratic play, and age perhaps catches up with you, it will be time to repair those instantly-acquired strokes that have caused you arm or body pain of some kind. You will look for a clinic, perhaps. Well, the clinic you seek is here in this lodestone of tennis instruction, over 40 years of instruction condensed into nuggets of simplicity a child of 10 will swallow with wonderment and enthusiasm.I can attest to the simple techniques that this master of instruction devised and put in this book. Camp kids progressed from beginners to fine club players in 3 weeks. A master instructor, like Van Der Meer, is one who sees the complexities and breaks them down into digestible, productive results. He does this both for the young and the adult player normally learning-resistant. These techniques work, the drills enhance your athleticism and elevate your play measurably. If you absorb the lessons of this master and you reinforce them in competitive play, you will realize you have achieved the classic style of stroke production that never strains the arms, legs or back. Think Gonzales, Smith, Ashe and Federer. All played pain-free with fluid stokes like those illustrated throughout the book. A non-playing parent could teach anyone to be a competitive player with this book without any additional aid.
