5-0 out of 5 stars A paragon of personal and professional life
This is an excellent book that every medical student and professional should be encouraged to read early in the career. Dr. Muarry was a phenomenal Surgeon and this book is an excellent narrative of some of the cases that help to shape his career. Equally astonishing is how this busy Surgeon always kept his family life a priority, and recognized the contributions of his Wife to his career and ability to perform at the level that made him one of the greatest Surgeons in history.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspirational surgeon
As a surgical trainee, i find this book truly inspirational. Murray combines being a surgeon and his private life in a way which is synergistic to produce the best possible outcome. But what transpired most was his natural surgical talent and conviction to things he believe is true. As a read, the book uses simple language and any reader will feel as if Murray is telling his story verbally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yey granddad!
This book is a wonderful read. I learned a lot about his career. And it opened up a whole new life to me. For all 20 years of my life so far, I have seen Granddad as only a grandfather, but reading this showed me what his life was like before we grandkids came along. He has done so much more than I could ever have imagined before.
Its an inspirational book from start to finish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great doctoring
Great doctoring involves a high level of technical skill combined with an ability to treat the patient as a whole, body and mind. Joe Murray's relationships with his patients makes this book a must read for anyone involved with the medical profession, as a doctor or a patient. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars V.H. Kazanjian
Extremely well written book.VERY interesting!Dr. Kazanjian operated on me when he was 74 and I was 12.How blessed I was to have known him.
Having read this book, I find it absolutely incredible that any individual could accomplish so much in only ONE lifetime.I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who was as fortunate as I to have been on the receiving end of Dr. Kazanjian's brilliance and expertise.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspiring story
The Miracle Man is an inspiring piece of work about a truly unique individual, who lived the American dream against all odds and managed to revolutionize the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.Amid the turmoil of World War I and a campaign of genocide by the Turkish government against the Armenian people, Kazanjian, a dentist with broken English, managed to bring some peace to the ravaged allied soldiers. Revered on the battlefield, Kazanjian found himself relegated once again upon his return home to the US. However, this is the story of a resilient man and impressively, one who maintained his humble and humane attitude in life. This is an important piece of history for all to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for a health practitioner's library
Reviewed by Juanita Watson for Reader Views (12/09)

As a nutrition consultant student, I have found the "Textbook of Natural Medicine, Third Edition," to be an indispensible resource in my studies. The first book in this set, and the larger of the two, is an extensive collection of chapters written by well-known professionals in the field. They cover a wide variety of topics under sections covering: the philosophy of natural medicine, supplementary diagnostic procedures/laboratory testing, therapeutic modalities, syndromes and special topics, and pharmacology/botanical medicine/nutritional supplementation. Highly referenced, the depth of this book is impressive. As I continue to delve deeper into sections relevant to my studies, I am in awe of the profound amount of knowledge compiled by Pizzorno and Murray.

The second book outlines 70+ specific health problems and their related diagnostic summaries, therapeutic/general/environmental considerations, nutritional and botanical suggestions, risk factors, and much more.Pizzorno and Murray were either the writers or they co-authored with other practicing professionals. The scope here again, is impressive.Highly referenced to peer-reviewed literature, these protocols delve into the heart of naturopathic and functional medicine.

Obviously, this 2-volume set would make a fantastic contribution to any health practitioner's library. I haven't seen any other collection that comes close to what these two ND's have published. That said, there are topics lacking, one being Lyme. Clearly, it would be impossible for a collection of books to definitively cover the vast subject of natural medicine.I don't believe this book actually set out to accomplish that. What I do see with "Textbook of Natural Medicine, Third Edition," is a highly useable and current compendium of many subjects relevant to natural medicine and alternative/holistic practitioners. As far as use for the layperson, I think these books are too advanced. Both Pizzorno and Murray have written books specifically designed for the general public, and I'd suggest looking into those first.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for everyone!
An outstanding set of books!!! This set of books is by far, the best set of natural healing books I've found. It was recommended to me by two traditional medical professionals and it has an amazing amount of current information. The first book provides detailed summaries of many natural herbs and supplements, healing therapies, tests you might not hear about from traditional medical doctors and many other ways to improve your health. The second book addresses specific health disorders and how to treat them. This has to be one of the best reference texts on this topic!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars exellent, complete textbook
i liked the book very much. i am a naturopath, and my studies have been based on the previous edition of the textbook. i use it still, years after i finished my studies. it's the only textbook for naturopathy, and it's getting better with every edition. and now it comes with the e-edition and updates....!!
i also love the integrative tendency of the text, and it's helpful to me in my work in a hospital.
still, of course, there are subjects that i'm missing in it, like the power of special foods, for example, or complete metabolism pathways. these things have to be completed from other books - which is also ok.
so, overall, i'm very pleased with the book, and continue to use it for my students now.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is scientific medicine?
I recently viewed the new chapter concerning 'naturopathic philosophy' [in the 3rd edition, 2005] within this text at the University of Bridgeport's library, as there's a naturopathic school there that I attended. The chapter discusses the premises of 'the naturopathic.' Do you really want to be treated by a physician who conflates (blends) supernatural, nonscientific, scientifically discarded, idealistic, metaphysical, religious and scientific information -- and presents the whole thing as [supposedly] scientific? [a misrepresentation: Kitzmiller et al. v. Dover Area School District anyone?].Check out "The Epistemic Conflation of a School of Thought Claiming to be Scientific" and "Why I Dropped Out of Naturopathy School" - online per me, Rob Cullen. [THIS is future healthcare? I disagree, these prophets are truly 'facing backward']. I'm highly ethically disturbed by this text and naturopathy, still. I'll just make one point about this book's contention that complexity, self-regulation, and evolution indicate that life defies the laws of natural science {and is therefore supernatural} -- particularly the second law of thermodynamics, per physics, in terms of life as supposedly being antientropic as indicated by life's evolving complexity [p.081-082] -- therefore justifying, particularly, vitalism and its handmaiden teleology-finalism. [Beliefs essential to 'the naturopathic'; explanations no longer within science at all; rejected-knowledge in terms of the scientific].[Yes, evolution! Even though evolution is actually the culmination of 'methodological naturalism,' which is HOW science approaches phenomena, that is: SCIENCE DOES NOT INVOKE THE SUPERNATURAL {which includes ideas like naturopathy's vitalism, spiritism and kind}, science determines its contents based upon EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE, and exceptionally LEAN explanatory approaches {per parsimony: as in 'do not multiply entities needlessly'; that is, if not ascribed by the evidence, IT ISN'T A SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION}]. Ah, HUGE problem. The second law deals with closed systems and life's context is within an open system, in terms of thermodynamics. [For the compliance of the 'living' with thermodynamic law, see Atwater & Rosa's work in 1897 which specifically speaks in terms of the first law {the Kinesiology Dept. of Rice University has a nice web page on biological thermodynamics}; and see 'Biological Thermodynamics' ISBN 0521795494 {p.321 specifically speaks in terms of the second law}]. UB says NDs practice "scientific medicine" and naturopathy is "health science."Hmmm, what kind of [supposed] science text gets something so simple WRONG? Naturopathy is a 'self-labeled science-based' area that won't let go of what has not been considered scientific [the supernatural, the metaphysical, the idealistic, the scientifically-refuted and -discarded -- and kind; i.e., the tenets of their doctrines] for several decades PLUS.This text reflects naturopathic 'epistemic mislabeling nonsense' [e.g. naturopathy's vitalism ("life force"), spiritism ("personal spiritual development; body, mind, spirit"), autoentheism ("god-power within"), teleology-finalism ('life force' as "intelligent, purposeful, goal-directed") and 'whatever else idealism'/ woo-woo AREN'T science-based (or even empirical phenomena, as in therefore 'not scienceable') -- but are falsely labeled as scientific by naturopathy anyway]. In reality, minimally, a mandatory, manipulatable, spiritual, 'underlying' {metaphysical, supernatural, idealistic and what-not} 'life force' {of many aliases} immediately responsible for states of health and disease is INSTEAD AN ARTICLE OF FAITH {aka a 'sectarian medicine' belief set}.Hmmm: "the most thoroughly researched and carefully referenced text on natural medicine has been revised to include the most up-to-date information...." It has been a couple of months since I read that chapter, and I'm still, honestly, LAUGHING OUT LOUD. Naturopathy is, essentially, a 'supernatural science' (an oxymoron; particularly, vital-force-spirit, spiritism, autoentheism, and teleology-finalism as "science-based" are arrived at through a radical unlimiting of the boundaries of 'the scientific'); while evidence from science doesn't support the supernatural / theistic, the metaphysical, or the idealistic; and vitalism and spiritism, in terms of physiological agency, are refuted biological hypotheses.-rc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary
The third edition of the Textbook of Natural Medicine is an extraordinary accomplishment. This will be seen as the moment when natural medicine truly took its place at the forefront of modern healthcare.

Under the stewardship of Michael Murray and Joe Pizzorno, this edition provides guidance for practitioners and laypersons alike in the application of natural interventions in treating all manner of diseases and afflictions. As a naturopathic practitioner, I owe a debt of gratitude to Murray and Pizzorno, and to all of the contributors to this wonderful text. Such loving attention to the art and science of natural medicine must not go unrecognised.

Some have critcised previous editions for a lack of scientific rigour. If one is to refer to conventional medical texts from only a generation ago, they will find significant errors and outrageous claims. For a system of medicine with little-to-no corporate or government funding, naturopathy has performed extraordinarily well to achieve its current position - where the science exists, we detail it.Where it does not, we demand it.People must realise that in corporate, profit-driven healthcare, there are aspects of natural medicine that shall likely never be researched; this does not, however, invalidate them.Individuals must decide which is the most appropriate healthcare service for them...and then partake of it.

If you are a naturopathic clinician - I implore you...purchase this book.If you are a medico - invest in the future of medicine, and give yourself a head start among your colleagues. If you are a member of the public - buy this text, integrate it, and take charge of you and your family's health and destiny.Your wellness is your responsibility, and yours alone - the Textbook of Natural Medicine is here to help you realise that goal.A landmark publication for an age in desperate need of a more rational, more compassionate system of medicine. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars practical
A great overview of natural medicine by two authors who are long respected in the field. In addition to an explanation of what natural medicine is, there are detailed descriptions of how to enhance health, immunity, and longevity through improving cardiovascular and digestive health. In addition it addresses specific health problems which make it a great supplement for those who want to dip into non-pharmaceutical treatment and can't find any professional medical support for doing so.

If you know a doctor who wants to encourage your efforts to take more responsibility for your state of health but who doesn't have the time to take courses, this is a great gift. There are plenty of references to research yet the text material is clear and easy enough for the layman to read. The doctor can give patients some relevant reading material while waiting for the doctor's return to the examination room.

Each of the specific conditions is followed by a review and treatment summary plus suggested lifestyle changes, supplements, and botanical medicines. There are often guidelines within each condition write-up that help the patient decide which treatments are more likely relevant to that person's needs. An example within "Insomnia" is the explanation that melatonin will not have a sedative effect unless the person is actually low on melatonin.

This is a great introduction to natural medicine as well as an ongoing companion throughout one's ups and downs of personal health care.

3-0 out of 5 stars More of an FYI less of an How to and How Much!
This book, is extremely informative andgives youthe scientific standpoint which is great for the person who is acutally some kind of an herbal alchemist, but useless or less informative or interesting for someone thats wants more of a how to, the Kitchen Witch, which is considered alternative religeon deals on the why's and how much of kitchen wizardry/medicine. Or Rosemary Gladstar's is a better book for the Mom, Or Dad or Layperson. This book is for a person who is dealing with the chemical components/chemistry of plant medicine..

Product Description
Accomplished Teachers, Institutional Perspectives provides perspectives from a wide range of policymakers, administrators and practitioners on the value and utility of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. In describing their various experiences working with NBPTS, the authors challenge the nation’s Pre K-12 and post secondary education system and state/local governing bodies—as well as the National Board itself—to expand the linkage between the NBPTS standards and assessment process and teacher preparation, program accreditation and state licensure.

This linkage is not only beneficial to the institutions themselves—it is critical in helping advance the nation’s education reform agenda. The book details some contemporary issues such as creating online programs based on NBPTS Standards and managing NBPTS teacher centers. The authors challenge the education community in general and the National Board specifically to rethink teacher professional development and certification.

The volume, edited by staff Mary E. Dilworth and Ella F. Cleveland, offers the reader a variety of perspectives on the benefit and utility of NBPTS programs, standards and assessments in the postsecondary domain. Contributors include Dean C. Kent McGuire (Temple University), James Cibulka, president of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), Frank Murray, president of the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC), Marty Hopkins (University of Central Florida), and Richard Navarro (California State Polytechnic University) who have effectively established NBPTS in teacher preparation programs and policies. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars He passed his test...
I ordered this book along with, "Police Officer Exam California : The Complete Preparation Guide (Learning Express Law Enforcement Series. California)," for my brother as he was taking the test to enter the academy. I must say that he did pass his test with help from these books, but it took him a couple tries, and I don't think this book accurately prepared him for testing. But it did help a little. I would say that these a generous three stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good reference guide
Most of the stuff in this book is some of the things you would hear from a law enforcement officer, like I do (dad is a cop and I will be the 1st female in the family). This book is pretty good if your want to see what a real exam will look like. It also give alot of tips for you application and interviews. It tells you what your training will probably be, and gives you tips on how to do some physical training, with alot more information on other things. So, if your getting into law enforcement, I can say this is a right book to get. But if you know a police officer asks them for some insight on the field, too.

AND FOR ALL THE WOMEN OUT THERE IF IT'S YOUR DREAM OR THIS IS THE PROFESSION YOU WANT TO GO IN TO I COMEND YOU, FOR I AM A WOMAN, AND I BELIEVE IF YOU FEMALE OR MALE GO FOR YOUR DREAMS AND THE THINGS YOU WANT IN LIFE!!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

After reading some of the description and raves about this cookbook, I expected some nifty new recipes, and was excited to get it for Christmas.Instead, I found trite, one-special-ingredient differences from Betty Crocker, or recipes based on something from the Pillsbury section of the grocery store.Examples - onion rolls made from a can of biscuits plus minced onion, or desserts based on Cool Whip.I even found recipes calling for MSG - yuck.I suspect many of the recipes derived from big cafeteria cooking, which might explain the bias towards speed and efficiency over more ingredients and longer cooking. This may be good down-home cooking, but it's not gourmet fare or even terribly original.

I also found numerous typos and simply poor writing that drove me crazy.I note that the publisher protected themselves from this obviously self-published book by saying "the author insisted on the work being published verbatim with no editing".

I appreciate the pride the authors take in their family's line of cooks. For some people, this may be a helpful cookbook. However, the overblown descriptions and excerpts misguided me for sure.Be aware of what this one gives you, and unless you like what I've described, I'd skip it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great history, great recipes
In his quarterly newsletter, Robert Stanek, author of "The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches" and many other books for young people, regularly features the books of new and upcoming authors as well as his favorite established authors. He's done this for the past four years. In his October/Fall newsletter, Mr. Stanek features three upcoming authors and one was Victoria Taylor Murray.

While I wasn't sure if Ms. Murray's Lambert series was right for me (her other ones are mystery/romance), I knew at once "Passed Down Through 4 Generations: Victoria Taylor Murray's Favorite Family Recipes: How it all Began" was my kind of book, and equally as important, it was a book my wife would enjoy as well.

As the name implies ""Passed Down Through 4 Generations," has great history behind the recipes. Ms. Murray wrote this book with her brother Joseph. Having tried the recipes, I can say there are many great ones, and more than a few that have become new favorites. I enjoy cooking, and I enjoyed this book. Recommended for any chef or chef to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even The Drink Recipes Are Great!
As a birthday gift this year a friend through me a huge party and used a few of the recipes in this fun cookbook including the drink recipes...my one word response was simply WOW!Thanks to the men cooks in this family my party was a real winner. As a second birthday gift my friend gave me a copy of this book.Needless to say I was thrilled! Now, I can hardly wait to through my own dinner party with all the trimings! (I highly recommend this cookbook, it's the best!)

5-0 out of 5 stars This book shines!Wonderful for any cook!
I'm a kind of glitzy girl who loves to dress up and be glamourous, so it's a surprise to people who first meet me that I really know my way around a kitchen. As my hubby always says, "That girl can cook anything ... from gourmet to Southern."And I'm proud to admit that I truly enjoy cooking.Always have ...

Another thing I dearly love is my family and I'm very sentimental about family connections. The titleof this cookbook intrigued me because of the family involvement, but then when I read that the author's brother is a chef who joined her in this venture, I just HAD to buy it.

I'm glad I did.I've already prepared some of the fine dishes and they smelled so good, my hubby couldn't wait to sit down to dinner. He's raving to all the neighbors about this cookbook too.

Thanks to both Taylors for the fine dining experiences. We look forward to many more, and I'm baking several of the yummy pastries for our church brunch on Father's Day.

5-0 out of 5 stars No matter how hungry you are,
There is something delicious for everyone to chow-down on.The recipes are easy to follow and the finished dish is wonderful.I absolutely love this book and keep it handy so I don't have to panic if a family member or friend suddenly decides to visit without notice. Most of my family members and friends are usually starving when they drop by.Now thanks to the Taylor family of men chefs I don't have to worry about what I'll make them to eat...No More Panic For Me!Thank You!Thank You!Thank You!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for protocol planning

A superb desktop guide, "The Clinician's Handbook of Natural Medicine" is the condensed, shorter version of the comprehensive, two-volume standout in its field "Textbook of Natural Medicine."Written by leaders of natural medicine with links to Bastyr University, this is a uniquely professional yet comprehendible reference book.

As a natural health practitioner myself, I have found "The Clinician's Handbook" to be incredibly useful in designing healing options for my clients. Is it an absolute definitive guide to every disorder? No, but it does outline 80+ of the most common issues facing the public, which may be translated to 80% of clients walking through my door. The easily-referenced sections which include diagnostic summaries, naturopathic considerations, clinical laboratory testing, flow charts, and therapeutic protocols are clear and concise reflecting current information available in the holistic health care field. The inclusion of issues such as food allergy/intolerance, candida overgrowth and chronic inflammation (CRP) immediately indicated to me that this book is striving to include the most recent knowledge in the naturopathic health model.

While I do believe this is a fantastic reference for the general public, being far superior in its depth and understanding compared to most of the wellness/reference guides available, some of the dialogue may be one step further than newbies to natural health can comprehend. It is designed more for clinicians, nutritionists, herbalists, alternative health care providers and the astute layperson with some background knowledge in natural health. My only issue with this book is that I would have liked to have seen a little more attention paid to dietary suggestions in general, and then taking it further to metabolic and biochemical individuality.I believe strongly in "letting thy food be thy medicine," so unfortunately, this is where I feel the book fell a little short. On the dietary issues as well, there are increasing studies and research proving the negative side of soy products, and unfortunately, this book doesn't reflect that research. That said, "The Clinician's Handbook of Natural Medicine" is still, by far, my favorite quick-reference guide and is the first book I reach for in research and protocol planning.

1-0 out of 5 stars not enough information, very complicated and hard to understand...
I needed help with my illness and I read this book. I was looking for help. While reading it I got so depressed because I couldn't understand the author's advice.
