Comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of onium ions-an indispensable reference for academic and industrial chemists

In Onium Ions, Nobel Prize-winning chemist George Olah joins forces with coauthors Kenneth Laali, Qi Wang, and G. K. Surya Prakash to offer an in-depth look at the chemistry and reactions of these important electron-deficient compounds. While other texts have covered various individual types of onium ions, this work addresses the structure and chemistry of numerous different classes of onium ions. Contents include:

  • Discussions of well-established classes of onium ions, such as azonium, oxonium, sulfonium, selenonium, telluronium, and phosphonium ions.
  • Coverage of more recent types, from siliconium, halonium, and carbonium to carboxonium, carbosulfonium, and carbazonium ions.
  • Clear explanations of definition, classification, preparation, and chemistry of each major group of onium ions.
  • An exploration of superelectrophilic activation of onium ions through contact with superacid media.

Enriched with numerous illustrations and a full listing of references for each chapter, Onium Ions should be a staple text in the professional chemist's library. ... Read more

Hydrocarbons and their transformations play major roles in chemistry as raw materials and sources of energy. Diminishing petroleum supplies, regulatory problems, and environmental concerns constantly challenge chemists to rethink and redesign the industrial applications of hydrocarbons. Written by Nobel Prize-winner George Olah and hydrocarbon expert Árpád Molnár, the completely revised and expanded Second Edition of Hydrocarbon Chemistry provides an unparalleled contemporary assessment of the field, presenting basic concepts, current research, and future applications.
Hydrocarbon Chemistry begins by discussing the general aspects of hydrocarbons, the separation of hydrocarbons from natural sources, and the synthesis from C1 precursors with recent developments for possible future applications. Each successive chapter deals with a specific type of hydrocarbon transformation. The Second Edition includes a new section on the chemical reduction of carbon dioxide–focusing on catalytic, ionic, electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and ezymatic reductions–as well as a new chapter on new catalysts and activation methods, combinatorial chemistry, and environmental chemistry. Other topics covered include:

    • Major processes of the petrochemical industry, such as cracking, reforming, isomerization, and alkylation

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nobel-prize winner author; recommended reading.
This is a comprehensive reference book for students studying for an advanced degree in petrochemicals, hydrocarbon chemistry or catalysis. It is almost as useful for professionals in the refining and petrochem field.I found the focus to be a little less on information technology tools thanwould be expected of a more current book. Due to the slow growth of thetechnology in this field, most of it is still up-to-date and still veryuseful. A handy advanced reference book, overall. ... Read more

This pioneering text is the first to point out the emerging significance of higher-valent carbon compounds. It describes the compounds of carbon with coordination numbers greater than four, and explores the delocalized bonds ofaromatic molecules as a basis for rational description of orbitals; localized multicentered orbitals; the interactions of metallic ions with other atoms and molecules; the skeletal electron counts as a guide for synthesis; and the isolobal concept. The book illustrates the way in which these subjects bring together structure and reactivity in the great diversity of novel carbon chemistry and its relationship to that of boron, lithium, hydrogen, the metals, and others. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good try, but
The foreword by Nobel Prize winner Olah is just a half page. The rest is a list of experiments one can make at the undergraduate level. Most seem spectacular - others not. Not all of them seem OK for a 50+ person auditorium. The recipies and safety instructions seem well made, and each of the experiments is preceeded by some quote by some well- or less-known person. Some of these are funny. I would have liked more pictures, and a better book layout.

4-0 out of 5 stars Using these experiments outside a lab
    Spectacular Chemical Experiments

Most of these experiments require access to a well stocked chemical laboratory. That aside, there are very adequate descriptions of how to do the experiments and good safety information. The quotations and histories around each experiment are quite entertaining in their own right and justifies the cost of the buying the book (even if you never get around to making "detonating gas" or using luminol)

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing

The fascinating autobiographical reflections of Nobel Prize winner George Olah

How did a young man who grew up in Hungary between the two World Wars go from cleaning rubble and moving pianos at the end of World War II in the Budapest Opera House to winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry? George Olah takes us on a remarkable journey from Budapest to Cleveland to Los Angeles-with a stopover in Stockholm, of course. An innovative scientist, George Olah is truly one of a kind, whose amazing research into extremely strong acids and their new chemistry yielded what is now commonly known as superacidic "magic acid chemistry."

A Life of Magic Chemistry is an intimate look at the many journeys that George Olah has traveled-from his early research and teaching in Hungary, to his move to North America where, during his years in industry, he continued his study of the elusive cations of carbon, to his return to academia in Cleveland, and, finally, his move to Los Angeles, where he built the Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute to find new solutions to the grave problem of the world's diminishing natural oil and gas resources and to mitigate global warming by recycling carbon dioxide into hydrocarbon fuels and products. Professor Olah invites the reader to enjoy the story of his remarkable path-marked by hard work, imagination, and never-ending quests for discovery-which eventually led to the Nobel Prize. Intertwining his research and teaching with a unique personal writing style truly makes A Life of Magic Chemistry an engaging read. His autobiography not only touches on his exhilarating life and pursuit for new chemistry but also reflects on the broader meaning of science in our perpetual search for understanding and knowledge. ... Olah's intellectual enthusiasm shines through the pages of his book. In telling his life story, he manages to also convey well his ceaseless curiosity; a never ending search for new and unexpected subtleties in chemistry.

He writes for a broad audience. No degree in chemistry required. He shows how chemistry in general, and his work in particular, has practical applications, that can impact everyday lives, like better fuel efficiency in cars, and lower pollution.

Perhaps the best hope for this book is that it can inspire students still undecided about their majors to seriously consider chemistry. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
The world is currently consuming about 85 million barrels of oil a day, and about two-thirds as much natural gas equivalent, both derived from non-renewable natural sources. In the foreseeable future, our energy needs will come from any available alternate source. Methanol is one such viable alternative, and also offers a convenient solution for efficient energy storage on a large scale.

In this updated and enlarged edition, renowned chemists discuss in a clear and readily accessible manner the pros and cons of humankind's current main energy sources, while providing new ways to overcome obstacles.

Following an introduction, the authors look at the interrelationship of fuels and energy, and at the extent of our non-renewable fossil fuels. They also discuss the hydrogen economy and its significant shortcomings. The main focus is on the conversion of CO2 from industrial as well as natural sources into liquid methanol and related DME, a diesel fuel substitute that can replace LNG and LPG. The book is rounded off with an optimistic look at future possibilities.

A forward-looking and inspiring work that vividly illustrates potential solutions to our energy and environmental problems. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Oil and Gas
A very useful review on current and future energy sources and energy carriers and an inspiring idea on methanol as a future carbon neutral energy carrier.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
There's a lot of material out there from Olah, and much of it gets to be a little redundant. I found this book to contain a lot of good background information that can be used in any discussion or introduction to a topic on energy resources and technology. I think it's a good read for anyone interested in future energy needs, production, and distribution.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good revview of status of methanol economy
An excellent review of the topic.Special empasis is paid to biomass, which is understandable. However more innovative and more carbon free technologies are not given as much coverage as might be appropriate.
Nontheless, the best book on the topic area.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Oil and Gas review
I read the book in one sitting.Repetition of many statements chapter after chapter made the book less convincing rather than more so.Better editing could have made it shorter and more persuasive.

Methanol may indeed be an effective energy storage medium, but the significant material, manufacturing and economic challenges to make methanol fuel cells viable is glossed over.Sweeping predictions for future economic viability of technologies that will glean CO2 from the atmosphere also created some skepticism. It will take lots of money to make this reality, and at least half of Congress is still owned by oil companies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Energy Summary
This book contains the best complete review of our energy options that I have found. This is in addition to its suggestion of the use of Methanol as a transportation fuel of the future.

The use of Methanol does require Hydrogen as an input which still has to be manufactured by some other means. ... Read more
