Product Description
This book lays the foundation for programmers to build their skills. The focus is placed on how to implement effective programs using the JCL instead of producing mathematical proofs. The coverage is updated and streamlined to provide a more accessible approach to programming. They’ll be able to develop a thorough understanding of basic data structures and algorithms through an objects-first approach. Data structures are discussed in the context of software engineering principles. Updated case studies also show programmers how to apply essential design skills and concepts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am giving it five stars to make up for the, erm, clue-challenged reviews
This is a book for a second-semester course in data structures. It teaches good design principles and classic data structures, while doing students a favor and using the standard Java data structures (instead of a custom library, as many other books do).

No, it doesn't teach concurrency, and neither should it--that's not a topic for second-semester CS students.

And, duh, it makes students fill in code. Hello one-star reviewer: That's how you learn computer science--by writing your own code.

1-0 out of 5 stars Find another book
This book is terrible. I had to buy it for a Java class, but I had to get all my resources for projects from the internet. The book has examples, and then all of a sudden it will leave out a huge chunk of code that is needed for the whole program to work. Do yourself a favor and find another Java book.

5-0 out of 5 stars CS for beginners with realistic examples
A reader wrote that, "this book fails to address concurrency issues". But the books title never commits this. It's about teaching data-structures using Java (correctly). And it exactly does this with great success.

Although I read it to refresh my knowledge, I enjoyed a lot as I learn the subject first time. It's CS for beginners, but not dull theory. The book explains every data-structure throughly with accompanied practical code snippets.

Three types of code is provided:
1) KW(Koffman-Wolfgang) version of the data structure implementation
2) Java Collection API version of the data structure (if it exists).
3) Data structure in praxis (sample applications)

Sample applications code are not toy code. Realistic examples such as infix-postfix conversion via stack, airline check-in passenger queues or recursive fibonacci numbers are choosen.

The book also shows how to extend Java's collections framework for advanced implementations.

Such valuable books cannot be written in a hurry. I think, especially for beginners, it would be a great start. And probably you'll never need to search an alternative if you start to learn the subject from this one.

It is the right book.

4-0 out of 5 stars i recommend it for beginners and intermediate java programmers
I like this book. good explanation of different topics along with the examples. Some parts in the book need better explanation and how to implement the concept using java language.
overall, pretty good book for beginner and intermediate programmers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rushed Into Print?
Fails to address threading/concurrency issues.

You will not find coverage of the new Concurrency Utilities including the new collection classes in package java.util.concurrent.

You will not find the following terms in the index:

Product Description
Since 1982 Paul McCartney has found in his work on canvas both a respite from the world and another outlet for his creativity. Last year he exhibited his work for the first time in Siegen, Germany. Now, in Paul McCartney: Paintings, he shares this work with a larger audience. Full of intense colour, these paintings reveal McCartneys positive spirit as well as a visual sophistication influenced by his friendship with Willem de Kooning. Beautifully designed and produced, the portfolio of paintings is accompanied by candid photos by Linda McCartney, a collection of critical texts, and a lengthy interview with Paul McCartney. The paintings featured in this book have never before been published in the trade. Many of Linda McCartneys accompanying photographs have never before been published either. The extensive text provides insight into McCartneys vision as an artist and musician.Amazon.com Review
Tony Bennett, David Byrne, and occasionally David Bowie all do it--they make art. With the introduction of Paul McCartney: Paintings, we can now add the famous Beatle to the list. The book is a catalog of paintings from McCartney's 1999 exhibition in Germany. Music and art have many things in common; for McCartney it is the freedom to "play" that connects both endeavors. Fittingly, his paintings draw most of their influence from abstract expressionism, in which the material quality of the paint itself inspires the drips, blobs, and splatters. His paintings range from cartoon-like figures and faces to open landscapes. The colors are dynamic with varying thicknesses of paint, some with marks scratched into the surface, all with stories and symbolic value.

From the illustrations and accompanying essays to the very candid interview, we are given remarkable insight into McCartney's practice as a committed creative person. He confides his insecurities as a painter who has never gone to art school, and his defining moments as an artist both musically and visually. There is an unusually generous section in which McCartney discusses many of the paintings in the book; it's a behind-the-scenes look as he elaborates on the personal meanings behind certain symbols, tells stories and anecdotes, and acknowledges his painterly influences, specifically Willem de Kooning. Also included are personal photographs of the artist at work, 117 color illustrations, and 17 duotone photographs. --J.P. Cohen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Paul McCartney Paintings
This is a beautiful book and a rare find. The book arrived in good condition and I am very pleased to add it to my collection.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best art books in recent years
Among hundreds of art books in my collection, Paul McCartney's Paintings is one of the 5-6 I return most often to.
His are very personal paintings - as he admits himself. I find them beautiful and inspiring, every time after viewing the book I feel like grubbing the brush myself...
Are they professional?
If by that we mean 'commercial' - I believe they are not.
But they represent very special type of abstract expression: inspired by but not necessary aspiring to "approach the style of the models (de Kooning in this case)" as some very pompous reviewer wrote in Publishers Weekly (cited by Amazon), expression of a deep intellectual persona.
The interview with the artist and discussion of the more significant paintings presents very unpretentious, down-to-earth and passionate painter.
There are thousands of us - painting our hart out for our own use, craving a feedback, but not necessary willing to step out from our own, intimate world...
Who knows, we may encounter an art 'specialist' like those two who gave 1-star valuations of the book (Jim-the-good-guy or the Anonymous). The two who wrote just to write something negative about a celebrity stepping out-of-the-line, rather than presenting their point of view. That's probably their only chance to 'get' an over-achiever, excelling in yet another field of art and adding more to his celebrity - all what most of us desire, but very few achieve. I bet that these two buy tabloids and devour tasty details of Paul's divorce...
But the biggest put-down comes from the above mentioned Reed Business Information (?) reviewer. 'Inane titles', not even approaching the style or significance of the 'master', one, (truly weak) sentence, taken out of context from otherwise interesting, intimate discussions between Paul McCartney and Wolfgang Suttner, and, finally, the "loose assortment of little-known art journalists with varying degrees of separation from McCartney" - how else to display high-brow disgust... on implied self-promotion of Paul McCartney.
As I mentioned before, I have access to hundreds of art books. Most of them were written by independent, well-known, influential and knowledgeable art critics... Most of the books are un-readable art-gab - I keep them just for the pictures of, otherwise, great art.
I recommend this book to anybody who likes free, un-educated but sophisticated abstract art.
I can only hope that the artist continues to paint and we will be able to see more of his internal life on canvas - it's very interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sooo Impressed
Paul McCartneys is not only a great recording artist, but he is a GREAT painter as well. He is a true artist. I enjoy his art very much, and I was extremely impressed that he can paint the way he can. I would place right up there among Picasso and Chagall. He's that good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dripping with color
It's a joy to flip through this book of wildly inventive faces and colorful dreamscapes. There is a freedom and a vibrance to McCartney's paintings, that, like his music, can't help but draw you in and infect you with a buoyant kind of wonder.

These paintings tear at the boundaries of what you think can and can't be done. They're appealing and yet completely unpredictable. In short, they are paintings from the same imagination that came up with both "I Will" and "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" and then had the not-so-common-sense to put them back-to-back on the same record.

McCartney is obviously setting the artist inside free with these bold, bright canvases.Whether this is great art, that is really a question that each pair of eyes must answer in its own way, in its own unique language.

I for one am glad that McCartney has chosen to make his paintings public.I find these colorful canvases, and the artisitic courage that propelled them into being, quite inspiring. ... Read more

Product Description
Hardware correctness is becoming ever more important in the design of computer systems. The authors introduce a powerful new approach to the design and analysis of modern computer architectures, based on mathematically well-founded formal methods which allows for rigorous correctness proofs, accurate hardware costs determination, and performance evaluation. This book develops, at the gate level, the complete design of a pipelined RISC processor with a fully IEEE-compliant floating-point unit. In contrast to other design approaches, the design presented here is modular, clean and complete. ... Read more

Product Description
The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily is one of the most important stories of the Anthroposophic and Rosicrucian streams. It is a timeless, allegorical tale of initiation and had a profound impact on Rudolf Steiner and on the formulation of his teachings. He called the fairy tale a kind of "secret revelation," an "apocalypse." As the authors point out in The Time Is At Hand! Goethe’s fairy tale begins with a specific image: a river separating two lands that contrast to each other, as do the sensory world and the spiritual world. The story ends with a bridge, created through sacrifice, that spans the river between the two lands.

Indeed, Rudolf Steiner was so deeply impressed by Goethe’s fairy tale, that he used it as the model for his own first mystery drama, The Portal of Initiation. It is said that, prior to its first performance, he told friends, "I know how long and deeply you have loved Goethe’s fairy tale, and today I am happy to tell you that you will see it performed on stage."

The twelve paintings in this book represent the soul experiences of the "Youth" in the fairy tale. These images are the fruit of an intense collaboration between the artist Hermann Linde and Rudolf Steiner, who commissioned the work. Steiner visited Linde’s studio every day and gave him detailed indications for the treatment of the various motifs. The result is this beautifully illustrated, full-color book.

This is a fairy tale for meditation—and for building bridges of the soul and spirit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rosicrucian Fairy Tale
Steeped in symbolism both evident and obscure, haunting to the memory and both quaint and noble in its imagery is Goethe's miniature masterpiece of a fairy tale in the German romantic tradition. This is a tale that must be worked with, a superficial reading will find the tale tedious and pointless by the average reader. To those that appreciate the western esoteric tradition there is much food for thought here.In many ways I think of this as Goethe's "Magic Flute"- a Rosicrucian, possibly Masonic inspired fable for personal transformation.Marjorie Spock's (sister of the famous Dr. B. Spock of child rearing fame) work, "The Art of Goethean Conversation" is a set piece to a greater understanding of this fable.Enobled human speech, deeds and thoughts are keys to transforming society.

Though appreciated for many years by Anthroposophists and other students of Rudolf Steiner's thought, this work will never find broad appreciation. But if it serves to introduce one to the genius that was Goethe, then its esoteric intention has been fulfilled.

4-0 out of 5 stars About the book and essay
A group of people live in a world turned upside down. They realise that the efforts of one alone can do little to create a new society. But by waking up to each other at the right time, they bring about profound spiritual and social renewal.

Goethe originally told this magic tale in a group of travellers during the French Revolution. Today, this magic still sparkles in Thomas Carlyle's original translation. Michael Burton's play invites you to enjoy the tale afresh through his punchy dialogue.

Jay Ramsay writes that this ' ... inspiring script is a genuine contribution, combining the grace of the original fairy tale with a brilliant use of the modern idiom.' And when the Green Snake is asked by the Gold King, 'What is more quickening than light?' she replies, 'Conversation!' We come alive when meeting each other in real dialogue. Marjorie Spock's Art of Goethean Conversation shows how true conversation has transformative power.

This book was published specially for the 1998-99 European Tour of the Mask Studio's production of The Green Snake, a new play inspired by Goethe's fairy tale. It also meets readers' requests for the Spock essay and Carlyle translation in an accessible form.

Product Description

The complete life and work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, in a book designed by Christo himself

"Nobody discusses a painting before it has been painted. Our projects are discussed and argued about, pro and con, before they are realized." —Christo

The work of the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude transcends borders, resists categorizing, and embraces contradiction. This is the only large-format book that includes all of their projects, from their early wrappings of trees and buildings to spectacular urban events such as The Gates in Central Park, the Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin, and Running Fence in California, as well as the full spectrum of Christo’s early art works that formed the basis for the ambitious large-scale projects that both artists produced together. Part biography, part critical analysis, part catalogue, the book has a lively text by the critic Paul Goldberger that traces both the lives and the works of an artist couple who established a category all their own: a category somewhere between conceptual art, urban planning, architecture, politics, engineering and art.

This volume gives a complete overview of the life and work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, from earliest family photos to plans for future projects. It features hundreds of previously unpublished photographs, drawings and plans for realized works, an incisive and detailed history spanning the entire oeuvre, and in-depth interviews, in a lavish edition designed by Christo himself.  In addition to a thorough photographic documentation of all of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s work, the book includes the transcript of a conversation between the artists and Paul Goldberger, the last conversation about her work that Jeanne-Claude had before her death in late 2009. Conceived originally to mark Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 75th birthdays, this book is now an eloquent memorial to Jeanne-Claude, and a celebration of the work of two artists whose imagination has affected the landscape of every continent.

Collector's Edition of 1,000 copies, numbered and signed by Christo.
