Book Description

I'm movin' on, at last I can see

Life has been patiently waitingfor me

And I know there's no guarantees

But I'm not alone

There comes a time in everyone'slife

When all you can see are theyears passing by

And I have made up my mind

That those days are gone

I'm Movin' On is a song and a book that helps deal with the confusedfeelings, the insecurities, and the pain of not living up to your own standards, goals, and dreams. It is a book of acceptance, surrender, forgiveness... andmovin' on.

"Everybody has problems and everybody, at some point in their life, hitsrock bottom," say Dave Williams and Phillip White. Life can spin out ofcontrol because of broken relationships or financial problems or illness orfailure. "Everybody deals with shame and regret as well as anger andconfusion. Sometimes it feels like the end of the world, but as we now know,it's not. Sometimes you think you will never make it through, but we'vediscovered, you will. With the precious blessing of time, scars heal, heartsmend, you will forgive yourself... and move on!"

5-0 out of 5 stars RASCAL FLATTS!!!
I love Rascal Flatts... And i promote what ever they do. I love this book and the song its self. The song and the book are both very inspirational.

2-0 out of 5 stars GREAT song!not so great book..
I read the other reviews on this site that said that this book was good so I purchased it and read it in about 15 min. It was decent but it no where near lived up to my expectations, I was thinking that I was going to be "changed forever" but I would have gotten more out of watching 10 minutes of Dr. Phil re-runs. My advice is to "Move On" to another book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice little gift book
I saw the video of I'm Movin On on TV and was struck by how the song just cut to the heart of what's wrong in so many people's lives. It was simple and profound and had catchy lyrics and I never forgot it. Today I found the companion book and although the pictures are terrible it makes a very nice gift for anyone who was deeply moved by the wonderful song.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moving on
I read this book tonight. When you feel you are truly as far down as you can possibly go--this book will let you know that you are not alone. The authors have been there, and every word of the book lets you know that.Very inspirational, motivational. ... Read more

Book Description

The study of Spain's early modern economic history has been dominated by interest in her New World empire -- by images of galleons returning home laden with gold, silver, and precious stones. But wealth generated from the New World accounted for only a small percentage of total income for the crown and private citizens alike. The vast majority derived from the Spain's agrarian economy, of which wool production formed an important part. Large-scale herding supported tens of thousands of families at all social levels and allowed a profitable use of land that was unsuited to agriculture. For centuries, wool production and trade arguably generated more foreign income than any other component of the economy. Even after the development of Spain's New World empire, the wool trade remained a crucial source of foreign exchange.

In Spain's Golden Fleece, Carla Rahn Phillips and William D. Phillips, Jr., offer the first authoritative history of Spain's vital wool industry. They show how wool was crucial both to Spain's domestic income and to the flourishing European textile industries that depended on the incomparable wool of Spanish Merino sheep. The authors begin by offering a broad and long-term look at the growth, dominance, and decline of the herding economy. They explain the components of wool production, from herding to shearing to preparing the wool for market. And they examine the evolution of the woolen textile industry in Spain and the export trade in raw wool.

The magnitude of Spanish wool production and its significance for the economy of Spain and the rest of Europe have never before been fully documented and analyzed. In following the rise, flourishing, and decline of Spanish wool production and the wool trade, Spain's Golden Fleece offers an important new perspective on the course of European economic history.

Book Description
The story of the first stage of Europe's expansion inot the Americas usually focuses on the personal actions of Christopher Columbus. Nevertheless, the enterprise of the Indies was a collective endeavour. Between Columbus's first voyage in 1492 and 1504 when he returned to Spain for the last time, thousands had sailed from Spain to the Americas. Their voices have largely been forgotten, but they have not been lost. The testimony those witnesses made, duly recorded and preserved, is the focus of this volume. The material has been available in the Spanish archives since the sixteenth century. Some historians used it in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and begining in the 1960s a group of Spanish scholars led by Antonio Muro Orejón published a definitive Spanish-language version. That is the basis of this edition, the first and only English-langauge version available. The dispositions of the individual witnesses provide evidence that the traditional picture of Columbus needs re-examination. This volume offers fascinating and unfamiliar information about the first voyages. ... Read more

Book Description
When Columbus was born in the mid-fifteenth century, Europe was isolated in many ways from the rest of the Old World and Europeans did not even know that the world of the Western Hemisphere existed. The voyages of Christopher Columbus opened a period of European exploration and empire building that breached the boundaries of those isolated worlds and changed the course of human history. This book describes the life and times of Christopher Columbus. The story is not just of one man's rise and fall. Seen in its broader context, his life becomes a prism reflecting the broad range of human experience for the past five hundred years. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Christoper Columbus:A Participate
In The Worlds of Christopher Columbus, William D. Phillips, Jr. and Carla Rahn Phillips place Columbus in a broad world context.Phillips and Phillips discuss Columbus and his travels across the Atlantic as a part of a larger inclination of movement in Europe to other parts of the world.By examining Columbus and European society in broader historical and geographic contexts, Phillips and Phillips show that Columbus's voyage across the Atlantic was not a unique event but rather a "continuation of a centuries-old human process of exploration and migration." (1) Before 1492, Europeans met and dealt with peoples "in pursuit of wealth and in service to a militant Christianity." (1)Columbus's voyage west was an attempt to continue what Europeans had done for centuries.

I give the volume 4 stary because of one minor limitation in the volume: the authors' use of a collective "European" mentality and culture.By using "European" instead of particular nations in Europe (or other identities), Phillips and Phillips portray expansion and exploration as a cooperative venture instead of a competition among European states.Instead, the authors should discuss the respective differences among the European nations and their respective economic, geographic, and historical situations. To understand why Spain and Portugal, and not Britain or France, for example, succeeded in exploration in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, these respective countries must be examined on their own, and not hidden by an all-encompassing "European" geographic and historical concept.

Overall, the volume helps to deflect the exceptionalism that usually comes with any discussion of Columbus by placing him and his voyages in broader historical developments.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Insights on a Traditional Hero and Modern Villain
Afraid that the backlash against an exaggerated hero worship of an often idealized Columbus will lead to a new and equally false myth of Columbus as simple villain, the authors systematically reconstruct the intelllectual atmosphere of 15th century Europeans. The widespread obsessions with religion, trade, Spanish empire building, and bureaucratic organizations are meticulously documented.

The Worlds of Christopher Columbus stands out as a balanced, fair, and well-researchedwork examining the life and legacy of Columbus within the context of his times, European exploration, Christian theology, and the search for quicker/safer trade routes. The book combines a wide variety of sources and perspectives as it chronicles Columbus' four voyages, and many more controversies, to the New World.

The authors, both historians at University of Minnesota, essentially argue that Columbus reflected the basic assumptions of his era like "a prism" combining ambition, zealous Christianity, and excellent navigation skills. The right man at the right place and time, Columbus sought recognition for opening Asia to trade and the expansion of Christianity. Ironically, Coulumbus always passionately condemned the idea that his "his world" was a "new continent."This valuable work brings new insights to the gradual evolution in Columbus goals, from Asian trading and building African style trading posts to island colonization. Columbus' decision to make slavery an economic cornerstone of Spain's new territories recevies special attention. (Queen Isabella, of Spanish Inquistion fame, opposed the enslavement of native tribespeople for religious reasons.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring Old Worlds
William and Carla Rhan Phillips have done a marvelous job of helping the reader understand the workings of the world of the 15th century. They have divided their book into three major sections; the first sets the stage forthe reader by describing the events which made the voyages of discoverypossible. The second section recounts the details of the actual voyages ofChristopher Columbus, and the third section discusses the aftermath of hisdiscoveries. The Phillips' cover a wide range of subjects, from the"Columbus legends" taught to us as children to the detailedevolution of ship building and navigational tools. Also discussed are thepolitics of the time, the religious beliefs, common knowledge of the periodand more. (It is surprising how many of us were taught that Columbus wasthe only man of the period who believed the earth was round.) Columbus wasnot an accomplished scholar or a misunderstood genius for he held wildlyinaccurate views of the world, his belief that he had discovered Asia neverfaltered. In this book you will get a feel for the evolution ofmaritime technology; how Columbus sought and gained financial support forhis explorations on behalf of Spain; details of the actual outfitting andexplorations of the four voyages made by Columbus. You will learn why thePhillips' described Columbus as a "masterful salesman" whoexaggerated his discoveries. There are many books about Columbus, eachwritten from different angles and differing bias, but I felt this book waswell researched, well documented, and fair minded. So saying, I came awayfeeling that Columbus was a daring mariner, that he was an ineptadministrator who openly disobeyed royal instructions and that he broughtmany of his troubles upon himself. Yet by putting him into the context ofhis time they have softened the harsh edges of his character flaws. I woulddefinitely recommend this work to anyone who wishes to get a welldocumented account of the worlds of Christopher Columbus. ... Read more

Book Description
Uses army correspondence, court martial transcripts, and pension applications to document the lives of black soldiers, who first entered the regular army of the United States in the summer of 1866. The authors reveal how the soldiers were recruited and how their officers were selected; how the black regiments survived hostile Congressional hearings and stringent budget cuts; how enlisted men spent their time, both on and off duty; and how regimental chaplains tried to promote literacy through the army's schools. The authors shed new light on the military justice system, relations between black troops and their mostly white civilian neighbors, their professional reputations, and what veterans faced when they left the army for civilian life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent account of the black regulars in the post-Civil War army

This book offers a detailed survey of the black enlisted men in the regular army who served from the end of the Civil War to the Spanish-American War in 1898. It is not concerned with the campaigns of the black soldiers (the authors do not use the term Buffalo Soldiers, deeming the designation an insult and one the black soldiers never used themselves), but more with their enlistment, organization, and treatment within the regular army ranks.

When the Civil War ended, most of the soldiers returned to civilian life. The army needed men and one place to get them was from the newly-freed black population. A bill was passed in Congress in July 1866, after much debate, that provided for six black regiments (two cavalry, four infantry), to be on equal footing with the other 54 white regiments. Ironically, the equality of treatment in terms of duty and responsibility was greater for post-Civil War black regiments than it was for black army regiments in the first half of the 20th century. Equally ironic, many blacks thought the army a safer place with more opportunity than what civilian life offered them, especially in the South.

The authors hope to correct two misconceptions regarding their subject: that the army itself discriminated against the black regulars, and that they "had become elite units . . . and the most professional, experienced, and effective troops in the service." The bottom line, and it's an important one, that the authors reinforce over and over with specific examples, is that both black and white regiments were treated pretty much the same, and that one group did not out-perform the other. Prejudice did exist against the blacks, but it was on an individual basis and not universal or policy generated. And if life was a combination of the dull, the dangerous, the brave, and the incompetent, it was so for everyone in the army.

The book is a scholarly account but not deadly dull. The authors write clearly and with style. The book is well-annotated, with many of the footnotes presenting further examples or deeper explanations to things mentioned in the text. The book is an excellent reference resource on the subject of the black regulars. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any military history library
The Black Regulars is an excellent book. Drs. Dobak and Phillips have told this story well, with truly exhaustive research that never suffers from what I call "academic" writing. It is lively and interesting from beginning to end. Along the way, they debunk an old myth that the black regulars were given the poorest equipment, garrisons, quarters, etc. They point out that in the post Civil War army, all soldiers suffered from the above difficulties. The lot of the black man was difficult, but the army did offer more equality. My only quibble is that the book ends with 1898. Perhaps we can look forward to black regulars from the Spanish American War to the present. I heartily recommend The Black Regulars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Book
This complex, richly documented treatment of the activities, lives, and relationships of black soldiers in the West during the generation after the Civil War is the single best book on the subject. It is one of only three books on the frontier army singled out for recommendation on my website. ... ... Book Description
The recent fascinating progress on laser cooling is the result of the close connection between theoretical work and the rapid technological advances in laser sources, particularly in the field of powerful semiconductor and solid-state lasers operating over a wide range of optical and near-infrared frequencies. The very close international and personal collaboration amongst the researchers resulting in a direct link between experimental data and theoretical calculations which characterize work in this field, have been important factors in the rapid comprehension of the subtle and beautiful phenomena involved in laser manipulation.

This Enrico Fermi school is the first formal school fully devoted to this topic. The theoretical part of the book includes contributions on the framework for the study of the photon momentum exchanges in the absence of relaxation, recent mechanisms of laser cooling, an analysis of the cooling forces, analysis of ...
