Excerpt:Abraham Leon (1918-1944) (born Abraham Wejnstok ), was a Jewish Trotskyist activist and theorist. He was born in Warsaw but his family moved to Belgium where he grew up. Leon became a member and then leader of the Belgian branch of Hashomer Hatzair , a left wing Zionist youth movement. In 1940, after the beginning of World War II , Leon rejected Zionism and became a Trotskyist ; around this time he joined the Belgian section of the Fourth International and became an organiser and leader against Nazi occupation and the "militarism " of Winston Churchill , exhorting Belgian workers to fight both Hitler and Churchill in the classical Leninist fashion of turning the World War into civil war . He wrote The Jewish Question: A Marxist Interpretation , a work which remains a widely used Marxist analysis of Jewish socio-economic history (and is remarkable in itself but all the more so from a man who died by the time he was 26).Leon was arrested by the Nazis in June 1944; he was subsequently deported to Auschwitz where he died in September.A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at Arthur Dunkelblum (23 April 1906 27 January 1979) a Belgian chess ... ... Excerpt: Ilya, Viscount Prigogine (Russian: ) (25 January 1917 28 May 2003) was a Russian-born naturalized Belgian physical chemist and Nobel Laureate noted for his work on dissipative structures, complex systems, and irreversibility. Prigogine was born in Moscow a few months before the Russian Revolution of 1917. His father, Roman (Ruvim Abramovich) Prigogine, was a chemical engineer at the Moscow Institute of Technology; his mother, Yulia Vikhman, was a pianist. Because the family was critical toward the new Soviet system, they left Russia in 1921. They first went to Germany and in 1929 to Belgium, where Prigogine received Belgian citizenship in 1949. Prigogine studied chemistry at the Free University of Brussels, where in 1950 he became professor. In 1959, he was appointed director of the International Solvay Institute in Brussels, Belgium. In that year he also started teaching at the University of Texas at Austin in the United States, where he later was appointed Regental Professor and Ashbel Smith Professor of Physics and Chemical Engineering. From 1961 until 1966 he was affiliated with the Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago. In Austin, in 1967, he co-founded what is now called The Center for Complex Quantum Systems. In that year he also returned to Belgium where he became director of the Center for Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics. He was a member of numerous scientific organizations, and received numerous awards, prizes and 53 honorary degrees. In 1955 Ilya Prigogine was awarded the Francqui Prize for Exa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=238560 ... Read more

Read more

Chapters: Maurice Maeterlinck, Jules Bordet, Ilya Prigogine, Albert Claude, Dominique Pire, Christian de Duve, Institut de Droit International, Corneille Heymans, Henri La Fontaine, Auguste Marie François Beernaert, List of Belgian Nobel Laureates. Excerpt:Albert Claude Albert Claude (August 24, 1899 May 22, 1983) was a Belgian biologist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1974. He studied medicine at the University of Liege (Belgium). During the winter of 1928-29 he worked in Berlin , first at the Institut für Krebsforschung, and then at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Biology , Dahlem . In the summer of 1929 he joined the Rockefeller Institute. While working at Rockefeller University in the 1930s and 1940s, he used the electron microscope to make images of cells which deepened the scientific understanding of cellular structure and function. He discovered the chloroplasts in the cell. In 1930, Claude discovered the process of cell fractionation , which was groundbreaking in his time. The process consists of grinding up cells to break the membrane and release the cell's contents. Claude then filtered out the cell membranes and placed the remaining cell contents in a centrifuge to separate them according to mass. He divided the centrifuged contents into fractions, each of a specific mass, and discovered that particular fractions were responsible for particular cell functions. In 1949, he became Director of the Institut Jules Bordet , Centre des Tumeurs de l'Université Libre de Bruxelles of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Brussels where he would stay until 1970. In 1970, together with George Palade and Keith Porter he was awarded the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize from Columbia University . For his discoveries concerning the structural and functional organization ... ... Read more
