Excerpt: A prion (pronounced ( listen)) is an infectious agent that is composed primarily of protein. To date, all such agents have been discovered to propagate by transmitting a mis-folded protein state; as with viruses the protein itself does not self-replicate, rather it induces existing polypeptides in the host organism to take on the rogue form. The misfolded form of the prion protein has been implicated in a number of diseases in a variety of mammals, including bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, also known as "mad cow disease") in cattle and CreutzfeldtJakob disease (CJD) in humans. All known prion diseases affect the structure of the brain or other neural tissue and all are currently untreatable and universally fatal. In general usage, prion refers to the theoretical unit of infection. In scientific notation, PrP refers to the endogenous form of prion protein (PrP), which is found in a multitude of tissues, while PrP refers to the misfolded form of PrP, that is responsible for the formation of amyloid plaques and neurodegeneration. The precise composition of the prion is not known, though they can be formed by combining PrP, polyadenylic acid, and lipids. Prions are hypothesized to infect and propagate by refolding abnormally into a structure which is able to convert normal molecules of...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=23048 ... Read more

Excerpt: Barbara McClintock (June 16, 1902 September 2, 1992), the 1983 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, was an American scientist and one of the world's most distinguished cytogeneticists. McClintock received her PhD in botany from Cornell University in 1927, where she was a leader in the development of maize cytogenetics. The field remained the focus of her research for the rest of her career. From the late 1920s, McClintock studied chromosomes and how they change during reproduction in maize. Her work was groundbreaking: she developed the technique for visualizing maize chromosomes and used microscopic analysis to demonstrate many fundamental genetic ideas, including genetic recombination by crossing-over during meiosisa mechanism by which chromosomes exchange information. She produced the first genetic map for maize, linking regions of the chromosome with physical traits, and demonstrated the role of the telomere and centromere, regions of the chromosome that are important in the conservation of gen...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=55188 ... Merzenich is a professor emeritus neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco. His contributions to the field are numerous. He took the sensory cortex maps developed by his predecessors like Archie Tunturi, Clinton Woolsey, Vernon Mountcastle, Wade Marshall, and Philip Bard, and refined them using dense micro-electrode mapping techniques. Using this, he definitively showed there to be multiple somatotopic maps of the body in the postcentral sulcus, and multiple tonotopic maps of the acoustic inputs in the superior temporal plane. He led the cochlear implant team at UCSF, which transferred its technology to Advanced Bionics, and their version is the Clarion cochlear implant.
