Product Description
The momentous events of the past year have changed the political face of the globe: the ideological struggle that dominated the world for most of this century is over; erstwhile mortal enemies have become friends and partners. But old attitudes have survived and modern weapons are in abundance. New foci of conflict have emerged - military confrontations are taking place and the world is still in turmoil. The welcome deep cuts in nuclear weapons have still left thousands of warheads in the arsenals, and the spread of these weapons to new states would further increase the danger of a nuclear confrontation. The release of the pressure pent-up under oppressive regimes created a powerful drive for independence, often achieved only after bloody wars. Many of the new states are economically non-viable: poverty and famine are frequent adjuncts of independence. If military conflicts are to be avoided, a comprehensive strategy must be formulated to improve the standards of living in the developing countries and enhance their security. A strategy is also needed to protect the environment from the effects of further industrialization and greater use of energy. What is needed is a concept of a sustainable, equitable and liveable world for all its inhabitants. All these problems were analyzed by scientists and scholars who met in a Pugwash Conference. The arguments used by them and the proposed solutions are presented in this book under six themes: world peace; nuclear disarmament issues; arms control; security in the Asia-Pacific region; development strategies and world economic order; energy and the environment. ... Product Description

The most serious problems facing the world are problems of global security that can be addressed only by global cooperation. The human species is threatened by weapons of mass destruction, the pollution of the environment, and poverty on a massive scale. With advances in science and technology and modern communication technologies, people are thinking in global terms. Finance, business, trade, tourism, culture and sport are all international activities. As in the course of history we developed a loyalty to our family and nation, we, as Joseph Rotblat argues, must now take the final step and develop an allegiance to humanity.

Product Description
The Pugwash Conferences bring together, from around the world, scientists, other scholars, and individuals experienced in government, diplomacy, and the military, and concerned with reducing the danger of armed conflict and seeking co-operative solutions to global problems lying at the intersection of science and world affairs. The Pugwash Movement is an expression of the awareness of the social and moral duty of scientists to help to prevent and to overcome the actual and potential harmful effects of scientific and technological innovations, and to promote the use of science and technology for the purpose of peace. In this volume, scientists and scholars from more than 30 countries write on a broad range of issues, including the abolition of nuclear weapons; the implementation and strengthening of the regimes outlawing chemical and biological weapons; conventional disarmament; creation of a world without war; environmental sustainability and security; an integrated approach to development and security; creation of security in the Asia-Pacific region and in the Middle East; education for world citizenship; and the social responsibility of scientists. ...
