Including some of today's leading historians and philosophers of science, this collection demonstrates that not all is precisely as it is too often assumed. Thus, the contributors to this volume suggest that Darwin's true roots lie in Germany, not his native England, that Russian evolutionism is more significant than many are prepared to allow, and that the true influence on twentieth century evolutionary biology was not Charles Darwin at all, but his often-despised contemporary, Herbert Spencer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars futher work encouraged
It's 2008 and I'm not aware of any new editions. I commend the combination of well structured, clinically relevant text with study questions. This version came out after I passed my first boards, and now it's time yet again. In my humble opinion questions really make learning more dynamic and immersive. I hope to see more projects along this direction.

Unfortunately the 2002 version is 6 years out, as of this writing. If you're studying for boards you may have to settle for ESAP.

In Darwinian Heresies, some of today's leading historians and philosophers of science trace the history of evolutionary thought, and challenge many of the assumptions that have built up over the years. Covering a wide range of issues starting in the eighteenth century, Darwinian Heresies brings us through the time of Charles Darwin and the Origin, and then through the twentieth century to the present. It is suggested that Darwin's true roots lie in Germany, not his native England, that Russian evolutionism is more significant than many are prepared to allow, and that the true influence on twentieth-century evolution biology was not Charles Darwin at all, but his often-despised contemporary, Herbert Spencer. Product Description
One of the defining images of World War II is that of a Ju 87 Stuka dive-bombing a target. For the Luftwaffe, ground-attack aircraft represented an essential part of the German air force's contribution to the offensive capability of the nation's armed forces. Throughout the war, the Luftwaffe made use of these aircraft in both offensive and defensive actions. The aircraft contributed to the German victories early in the war and helped delay defeat once the Allied forces started to advance on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. While the Ju 87 was probably the most immediately identifiable aircraft used by the Luftwaffe in ground-attack operations, it was by no means the only type.
Prior to World War II, the Luftwaffe developed these tactics using aircraft manufactured by Henschel, Arado, and Heinkel. During the Spanish Civil War they were tested in real combat conditions with the Heinkel He 51 being used in support of Franco's forces. Ground-attack aircraft were used by the Germans in most theatres of the war, including tank-busting Ju 87s on the Eastern Front and missile-fitted Focke Wulf Fw 190s after D-Day. Night Harassment Units using either Ju 87s or Fw 90s were also deployed to attack after darkness had fallen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Luftwaffe-Ground Attack Aircraft in Action!
Luftwaffe ground-attack aircraft were absolutely crucial elements of Germany's war. Employing a variety of aircraft ranging from Heinkel 50s to Me 262s, Schlachtflieger units helped ensure victory in the early Blitzkrieg phase of the war along with delaying Germany's ultimate defeat in the war's final years. The development and combat ops of Schlachtflieger units are detailed in this 2007 'Classic Colours' title from Ian Allan.

Germany's development of ground-support tactics and technology, which dated from the First World War, went into high gear in the late 1930s, being subsequently tested in the Spanish Civil War. Once war broke out in 1939, units flying Henschel 123s and Junker 87s supported the Blitz. Beginning in mid-1941, Messerschmitt 109s - and later FW 190s - conducted hit-and-run raids on English targets. Against Russia, Germany utilized 123s and 109s supplemented by Henschel 129s, FW 190s and a mish-mash of often experimental tank-busters like the Junkers 88P-1. Nocturnal ground attacks were handled by unlikely warbirds such as the He 50, He 46, Gotha 145 and so on. Eventually the FW 190 became Germany's main ground support aircraft. The final months of the war saw many of these aircraft still flying combat bolstered by last-ditch improvisations like Bucker 181 trainers equipped with four Panzerfaust rockets!

Given the crucial role Schlachtflieger played in Germany's war-making, it's a bit surprising the Classic Colours crew tried to sandwich all that history into one volume. Perhaps they felt a two-volume history wouldn't fly.

Also surprising was the authorship of this volume, six 'Classic Colour' stalwarts contributing separate chapters on various subjects. J. Richard Smith, for example, contributes chapters on "Early Experiences," "The Spanish Experience," etc. Chris Goss describes the "Tip and Run" jabo raids on England. Martin Pegg reports on "The Schlachtflieger on the Eastern Front." Other sections deal with combat ops in the West and in the Med, night ground attack units, the Me 262's ground attack record, special units like Sonderstaffel Einhorn and so on.

The book contains over 200 black & white and color photographs along with 18 marvelous color profiles of He 51s, Hs 123s, FW 190s, Bu 181s, Stukas, He 46s, Ju 88s, Bf 109s and Me 26s by the Tullis/Brown/Estanislau triumvirate.

The result is an interesting, colorful if somewhat fragmented history of Schlachtfliegers in action. Shoehorning all that history into one volume apparently precluded using first-person combat accounts, which I enjoyed in the various earlier 'Classic Colours' series. If it were possible, I'd have given SCHLACHTFLIEGER 4 1/2 stars. It has some fascinating history, great photos and artwork but really needs two volumes to do justice to the vast story of Luftwaffe ground-attack aircraft in action.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent end (?) of a "Luftwaffe Colours"series
The whole collective of authors worked on this book. At last, their work is finished. Now we can take pleasure in long-awaited volume in which all questions concerning Luftwaffe Ground-attack Units are considered. The each new chapter - the new author. As for me, I like such approach. He allows each author to concentrate on the object of research and doesn't distract it from attempt to mix all in a heap. In our case, all is done excellently.

Early experiences with various types of planes, the Civil War in Spain - The Testing Ground for Hs 123 and Stukas, 1941-1942 operations, Schlachtflieger on the Eastern Front, a "hellhound" Hs 129, NSG on the Eastern Front 1943-1945, Mediterranean Campaign 1942-1944, adventures of the Jabostaffel 5 in the Eismeer Region, SG 4 in Italy and France 1943-1944, NSG 1, 2 and 20 in the West 1944-1945. Also covered are the special task force units: Sonderstaffel Einhorn, III./KG 200, Kommando Schenck. I was surprised to see an article about one of the original units in the World War II - the Bucker Bu 151 Panzerjagdstaffeln with Panzerfausts attached to their wings. Rather informative and exhaustive!

I was confused in one moment. The subscription under a photo (p. 53, second from above) says, that these persons are Ofw. Ludwig Belloff, Oblt. Doye and Oberstlt. Beushausen, commander of the NSG 3. According to Arturs Silgailis, these are Fw. Klints, Lt. Mencis and Lt. Abrams. Quite interesting moment, isn't it? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In the wake of the cryptozoologists
"Living Wonders" is supposedly a book about mysteries and curiosities in the animal world. In reality, it's a occultic-New Age book treating various superstitions about animals as if they were the real thing! And that's precisely what makes it so entertaining...

Apparently, the authors are "forteans", rogue disciples of Charles Fort, a crazy Briton who wrote several books about supernatural and impossible phenomena back in the 1930's. There are still fortean societies in both Britain and the USA, although I'm not sure how thriving they are in a world where even more exciting sects and cults are just one click away.

One favorite pastime of forteans is cryptozoology, the search for unknown mystery animals: Bigfoot, Yeti, the Bunyip, the Loch Ness Monster, and so on. Indeed, a large section of "Living Wonders" is devoted to these pursuits. That part of the book is actually quite interesting, giving an historical overview of cryptozoology, it's various controversies, factional squabbles, etc. Well, at least it's interesting if you struck up an interest for alternative movements and the cultic milieu: ufologists, astrologists, and now, cryptozoologists!

Apparently, there are two main factions within the cryptozoological community. One, roughly equivalent to the nuts-and-bolts school of ufology, could perhaps be termed the flesh-and-blood school. They believe that gigantic, unknown animals still live in unexplored parts of the world, and that these animals are as real as, say, chimps or crocodiles. The Belgian Bernard Heuvelmans was the foremost representative of this school of thought. Some of his books are also available from Amazon. (BTW, there is an episode of the "X-Files" in which Moulder and Scully chase a monster at a place called Lake Heuvelmans. Now you know why!) In America, I suppose Loren Coleman is a representative of this school.

But after almost a century of activity, none of the mystery animals so eargerly saught after by this group have turned up. The authors of "Living Wonders" are therefore more sympathetic to a occult version of cryptozoology, represented by Ivan T. Sanderson and John Keel (of Mothman fame). Essentially, they believe that both UFOs and Bigfoot have the same source, and that source is supernatural. Many observations of Bigfoot come from US states where no such creatures could possibly be hiding out, and other creatures seem connected to UFOs, such as the mothmen of West Virginia. Of course, a more sober-minded observer would argue that there is no mystery here, just two similar superstitions...

As already noted, "Living Wonders" contain a detailed survey of all things cryptozoological: sea-serpents, thunderbirds, Bigfoot and similar creatures, neo-dinosaurs, the Australian Bunyip, and so on. "Living Wonders" also contain chapters about what they call OOPs, animals that are out-of-place, for instance crocodiles in Britain, claiming this proves teleportation is possible. Mysterious "rains" of frogs, worms and other creatures are covered, and there is also a section dusting off old-fashioned superstitions about hibernating swallows, crow courts, and the like. Naturally, Clever Hans is featured, and also another horse, even more sensationalist, that apparently was a mind-reader. The source? National Enquirer magazine, LOL!

Since the book was published over 20 years ago, it is naturally somewhat dated. Some of the "evidence" presented for the cryptids has already been exposed as fake, for instance the Doc Shiels photos of sea-monsters. Nor is the Chupacabra mentioned, a Mexican and Puerto Rican superstition that haven't caught on in the US until recently. Still, the book is something of a classic, and well-worth reading, certainly as sheer entertainment, and also as an introduction into the zany world of cryptozoology.

But please don't believe it. The real animal world is sufficiently mysterious just as it is...

As the global economy continues to weather the effects of the recession brought on by the financial crisis of 2007 08, perhaps no sector has been more affected and more under pressure to change than the industry that was the locus of that crisis: the financial services industry. But as policymakers, financial experts, lobbyists, and others seek to rebuild this industry, certain questions loom large. For example, should the pay of financial institution executives be regulated to control risk taking? That possibility certainly has been raised in official circles, with spirited reactions from all corners. How will stepped-up regulation affect key parts of the financial services industry? And what lies ahead for some of the key actors in both the United States and Japan?

In After the Crash, noted economists Yasuyuki Fuchita, Richard Herring, and Robert Litan bring together a distinguished group of experts from academia and the private sector to take a hard look at how the financial industry and some of its practices are likely to change in the years ahead. Whether or not you agree with their conclusions, the authors of this volume&#151the most recent collaboration between Brookings, the Wharton School, and the Nomura Institute of Capital Markets Research&#151provide well-grounded insights that will be helpful to financial practitioners, analysts, and policymakers. ... Product Description
Jeff Roberts’s poems know physics and landscapes. They know too how those things are inextricably connected—the large and the small; and whether we’re aware of this in our day-to-day lives or not, Mr. Roberts’s poems are. A poem that knows something we don’t —or one that reminds us of what we’ve always known but have forgotten—is the poem that connects or reconnects us with how we understand ourselves in the world, at times as participants and at others times as witnesses. Roberts give us both of these perspectives and does so without editorial comment about which is the more rewarding or beneficial. Roberts’s poems bring us to a place where we remember and might reclaim the kind of experience that both aches and heals at once—the thing we come to poems for, in the end . . . a lost wisdom that poetry more than anything else tries to give back to us.—Paul HaenelFarewell, Goodbye, Wave GoodbyeWashington Writers’ Publishing House ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Widely published and experienced poet Jeff Roberts brings poetry lovers a delight
Widely published and experienced poet Jeff Roberts brings poetry lovers a delight with "Chatter in the Canopy". His solid work with the English language is enhanced by great black and white art work from Dick Roberts and Dog Heinlein. An exquisite blend of art and verse, "Chatter in the Canopy" should be a consideration for many a poetry fan. "Seduction": It's the sand in your voice that holds me./That and the moonlight buttering your long ribs.//You can shout into the wind through cupped hands./I can smell the salt and wet canvas.//What if I surrender to your rolling, black valleys -/To the tops of mountains kissed away?//When we collapse, flat-faced and ordinary,/On tar-colored foam and a dead skate-what then?

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm, Accessible, has life to it
J.Roberts poetry is a delightful surprise. This collection of poems is a pleasure to read and re-read from cover to cover. In his work, the poet captures the essence of a moment, an instance, in an interaction with others and with nature. "Cold Shower," for example, gracefully moves through nuances of connection and through a shift of mood, feeling and intention. As I read, it is as if I am absorbing the contents of the poems; it is a sensate feeling; a connection; leaving me touched and moved and right there with the poet. His images of the natural world are lovely; recognizable; pleasurable to feel and touch. His work is warm and has life to it.
The illustrations are also lovely and compliment and strengthen the poems. "Chatter..." has become a favorite of mine; easy to pick up for a few minutes a day; and also, a favorite gift for my friends.
My hat is off to a kind, gentle, insightful, engaging poet, JRoberts.

5-0 out of 5 stars great new poetry

I loved this work. Jeff Roberts has a unique mind - gorgeously precise and filled with whimsy. I smiled my way through many poems, but Roberts doesn't back away from darkness for a second. He is fiercely observant, honest and keenly sensitive, without self-pity. With an arsenal of craft at his call, he never abuses it. There is wonderful absurdity and wit in his work. Roberts'poem THE BOATMAN is an instant classic. For me this was a delightful book, very heartfelt, with illustrations filled with the same odd, unforgettable charm as the poems.

Each individual poem and illustration could stand alone proudly, but the combination of all, in this fine book, keep my hands reaching back for it on their own.
I find myself wanting to turn the page to see what great talent is next but also wanting to stay and reread the poem that I just read and to absorb the combination of the poem with the accompanied illustration one more time.
Great stuff!Thank you Mr. Roberts

5-0 out of 5 stars Real flesh and blood human experience
This little book caught me by surprise in how the author allows the reader to touch his experience quite intimately. I had not expected that. Nor did I expect the mix of his ribald humor with his deep love of nature and sense of spirit. He says "for if we have time" (where I might have said "if we are lucky"), "The tumbling will give us a texture that transcends the standards by which we are judged."

Why, The Rookery alone is worth the price of admission. Read these poems. Your life will be the richer for having done so. ... Read more
