5-0 out of 5 stars A good reference for circuit theory
One of my criteria for accepting this book was to find a section on Blackman's immittance relation, a powerful but often overlooked circuit analysis technique. Different sections are treated by different authors, providing insight from many different perspectives. With so many topics handled, I was surprised at the thoroughness of the book. Not for a beginner, but can be used by anyone interested in circuit theory. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners!!
I have experience in technology level basic electronics, PLC's, some Industrial Instrumentation, some digital, and I've had C++. I'll admit I'm not a whizz at any of it, but then again I don't think I'm stupid. I bought this book based on the high reviews thinking it would be the hot ticket-I was disappointed. Chapters 1 & 2 covers memory organization, interrupts, and timers. The tutorial at 8052.com(free) does a lot better job at explaining this material. The book has some assembler programs, but it doesn't explain the basics of assembler at all- doesn't explain directives like org, equ, and rs. The course at hkrmicro.com(free)does a lot better job of explaining assembler than this book. Then chapter 3 gets into interfacing the micro. It has some good material about swtiches, but then jumps into more advanced material like switch matrixs, encoding and so on. Why jump to this material when you haven't even explained the very basics? Why not start with some simpler interfacing , explain it, show the code, and build up from there? I skimed through chapters 4 -7, which cover c programming and more interfacing examples, but they looked kind of advanced.

I kind of hate to bash the book because I'm sure for the right people it does have some good information. However, the books description says... " it would be helpful if the student is familar with personal computers, binary and hex numbers, and had introductory digital devices(I'll admit I'm weak on digital)." The description I think leads you to think the book is going to cover the 8051, assembler(explains very little)& C and interfacing at a level begineers can understand-I didn't find that to be the case at all . Compared to other Prentice-Hall electronics books I've read by Floyd and by Tocci, this book doesn't stack up at all. I learned more from 8052.com and from hkrmicro.com.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only for beginners
This book is good for beginners:
- Description of 8051 processor
- Hardwareinterfacing an description
- Examples in C and ASM
- Assembler instructions from Intel (same as in 8051.pdf)

I was searching of bulding a Multitasking 51 system but in this book was nothing written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cut to the core of 8051
I have been working with microcontroller for quite some time. This book does not waste pages to get to the heart of 8051. I like that. The book focused more on software part of 8051. This book can make you a very good embedded programmer, but not a good embedded controller hardware designer. But this book is definitely the best thing that happened to people who want to become familiar with microcontroller. For the price and the material it covers, I can not find a better book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Moreland Wins
The high ranking is for the "contributors" (Moreland, Craig, Willard, Parsons, and Flew) for both sides of the issue. Their essays were serious and showed interests in the question "Does God Exist?" Unfortunately, though this book represents a "debate" on the existence of God between Moreland and Nielsen, it was very one-sided with Moreland emerging as the victor. I was quite surprised that Nielsen provided such a weak rebuttal to Moreland's arguments for God's existence. In fact, Nielsen even engages in some ad hominem tactics in his final essay (What more can you do after you lost?) in which he makes reference to Moreland's and Craig's age as a factor contributing to their "confusion" of using science (big bang cosmology and the anthropic principle) to augment the cosmological and teleological arguments for God's existence. What does age have to do with anything? Besides, I consider this as such hypocrisy! Nielsen begins his first speech with the supposition that rational people who have both a good philosophical and scientific education should not be theists! Why make an appeal to science education on the one hand to support your view but denounce it later when you can't deal effectively with it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Atheism was poorly represented
This book is divided into three sections: (i) the transcriptof the oral debate on the existence of God between Christianphilosopher J.P. Moreland and atheist philosopher Kai Nielsen; (ii) commentaries on the debate by two Christian philosophers (William Lane Craig and Dallas Willard) and two atheist philosophers (Antony Flew and Keith Parsons); and (iii) concluding thoughts by Moreland and Nielsen. I agree completely with the conclusion of Craig's flow of the debate, that Moreland won the debate. In fact, Moreland's victory in the debate was so decisive I am left wishing that Keith Parsons had been Moreland's opponent; I wonder if Nielsen even took the debate seriously. In light of this, I am baffled why a secular humanist publisher like Prometheus Books would choose to pubish this particular debate, given that the atheist side was so poorly represented. For that matter, I am surprised that even Thomas Nelson originally published the book, for even theists should want the atheist position to be given its best representation. However, Nielsen's critique of theism is not representative of most atheist philosophers. Nielsen relies upon a critique of religious language in which he argues that "God" is literally meaningless. Not only do most atheist philosophers not use such an argument, they disagree with it! Unfortunately, as a result of Nielsen's "strategy" of putting all his eggs in an ineffective basket, readers are deprived of the opportunity to see an exchange between Moreland and atheist philosophers who make substantive objections to Moreland's arguments. To be sure, Antony Flew and Keith Parsons both make excellent, *representative* objections to Moreland's case, and Moreland responds to those objections in his final remarks, but we are reprived the opportunity to see how Parsons and Flew would respond to that, and so on. I therefore discourage *buying* the book.

However, I encourage interested parties from both sides to borrow the book from someone who already owns it (e.g., a professor or a local library). I just wouldn't recommend spending money on the book when the atheist debater did such a poor job representing atheism. Even theistic philosophers would agree that Nielsen could have defended atheism in the debate better than he did -- much better in fact -- and that's why I discourage buying the book. And because theistic philosophers care about the truth, even they would admit that atheism wasn't represented as well as it could have been. (For example, most theistic philosophers I have read endorse J.L. Mackie's _Miracle of Theism_ as one of the best philosophical cases for atheism. They don't agree with the book, but they agree that Mackie's book is one of the best cases for atheism in the philosophical literature. And if you asked any of those theistic philosophers, they would tell you that Nielsen did not use any of Mackie's arguments. Therefore, Nielsen's arguments are not representative of the best arguments for atheism.)

Moreland gave two arguments for theism: the comsological argument and the argument that God resurrected Jesus from the dead. We have responded to both of these arguments (thought not necessarily to Moreland specifically) on the Secular Web, and would welcome an exchange with Moreland should he want to answer our rebuttals.

2-0 out of 5 stars Same old Situation
This is a debate between an atheist and a theist. This isn't the best debate in the world, but it's good for the beginner.

First, Moreland used lots of arguements for God's existence. Teleological and cosmological. Others too. They were pretty standard arguements, although he did use scientific numbers and words. These numbers are misleading, but it made JP's arguements sound stronger than they really are.

Nielsen wasn't swayed. He said that the word God is meaningless, and so anything JP said about God wouldn't get off the ground. If we don't know what 'God' stands for, how can we argue for it? Nielsen really believed in the cognative meaninglessness of theism. He put all his eggs into one basket.

Moreland also made an appeal to religious experience. He said he had met an invisible person, who is God. Moreland said he also met another invisible person, Jesus.

Nielsen didn't buy it. All we can say, Nielsen says, is that a certain state of affiars went on inside JP's brain. There is no necessary connection between thinking one is experiencing God and there acutally being a God. So Moreland's arguement falls apart.

The contributors were helpful, sort of. Craig was the standard Craig and Williard wasn't much help. Nielsen even seemed angry at Williard. He said Willard wasn't familiar with his writings, and if he was--if he had taken the slightest bit of time to read Nielsen's books--Williard wouldn't have made so many errors in representing Nielsen's position.

This book was okay. Personally, I can't believe people talk about this stuff today. We know better. Nielsen is talking more sense than Moreland, but perhaps a more sophisticated theist could do a demolition job on Nielsen. I don't know, though. I just don't see how anybody can talk about God today, especially the way Moreland does.

Don't buy this book. Check it out at the library instead. For a better read, see the Craig-Armstrong debate. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
I have read and heard so much about men in the Civil Rights Movement, and I have read so little about women. This book for me filled a gap.It told an exciting story with great eloquence. It portrayed the life of a heroine of the Civil Rights Movement, and described the times. And it was at the same time rich and intellectually sophisticated. I cannot recommend this book enough to all readers, and I hope these comments motivate others to get this wonderful book and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stirring and important biography of an important American
Chana Kai Lee makes a crucial contribution to our understanding of the civil rights movement with this stirring and important biography of Fanny Lou Hamer. Mrs. Hamer, an icon in the movement and a force unto herself, was one of the strongest and most influential voices in the African American struggle for freedom. Thanks to Professor Lee, that voice echoes for the ages in the pages of For Freedom's Sake. This is a book that all Americans should read and that students and general readers alike will enjoy. Like its subject, this well-crafted book will be a beacon for freedom for many years to come. ... Read more

You Better Work! Underground Dance Music in New York City, by Kai Fikentscher

Of the recent works of word or image dedicated to the spirit of the New York Underground, You Better Work! stands alone, in my opinion, as the first to conduct a thorough, scientifically sustainable analysis of a subcultural phenomenon whose rarified nature made it heretofore nearly impossible to grasp, save from within. Other works can speak of history and its major players with unquestionable authenticity, as does Mel Cheren's Keep On Dancin'. Fikentscher's offering, however, proposes an exacting dissection of Underground Dance Music (UDM) properly placed in the sociocultural time-space continuum and described with academic accuracy, all the while remaining reverently connected to the magic of the specific dancefloor experience that gives UDM its singularity.

UDM, and the invisible universe it materializes around itself and its dévotées, present a unique quandary to the academically-inclined thinker. UDM is at once quite quantifiably tangible in its elements and techniques, yet undeniably metaphysical in its manifestation and effect. The scientist's dilemna, then, is to draw the black-and-white line of academic discipline around the grey frontiers of a shadow world. Without an initiate's third eye, the accomplishment of writing this seminal work for the students of a nascent discipline would have been unattainable.

The advantage of being both an academic pioneer and a subcultural insider allows Fikentscher to paint his complicated picture within the perfect frame of reference-namely the sociocultural and (importantly) religious experience of gay African- and Hispanic-American men-as can only one who knows the subject matter firsthand. This "mind over market" approach means, in practice, that notions of musical immediacy and method of consumption are solidly deconstructed without minimizing the importance of context and real-time interaction in analyzing the deconstructed parts. The relevance and insight of such a study is only more poignant now, after the near-demise of UDM's vanguard subculture (and, subsequently, of its home city) in the last decade and the present resurgence both of community and dancefloor spirit within, as well as mainstream curiosity surrounding New York's gay underground of colour.

Both Fikentscher himself, and the roadmap through the history and psyche of a people-within-a-people that he painstakingly and respectfully lays out in You Better Work!, are special gifts to the academic world at large, and particularly the literati of the Underground. You Better Work! is the definitive comprehensive treatise for those academic minds that can bend around the deep afterhours disco and house beats of the New York Underground. It will be required reading for ethnomusicologists everywhere, and should be studied by all those who profoundly want to understand why club life is as essential to the Big Apple as its subways.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tour of the scene - erudent and accessible
There's amazingly little "serious" literature on the NY underground dance scene, even though it's been around for decades and now has counterparts all over the States and all over the world. There's not even that much non-serious, vapid stuff about it, either, in fact. So Fikentscher's book really merits the worn-out phrase, "essential reading," because it explores all aspects of the subject in a serious but accessible way: the origins in the disco era, the gay-black-latin interrelationships, how form and function and venues combined to produce a distinctive music, the various outsized personalities, the "quality of life" campaigns that periodically threaten to squash the scene, etc.

The author is obviously conversant with all the critical-theory tools and concepts that help to illuminate this kind of subject, and he uses them well here, yet he's produced a book that the average scenester (if there is such a person) could read and would probably approve of (the pomo academic dream come true, I guess).

Anybody with even a mild interest will find this book engrossing (I picked it up and couldn't stop), and I suspect that even long-time insiders will learn a few things. Kudos to Fikentscher for producing something this good on such a fascinating, diverse world. ... Read more

This was an excellent book, well-written and informative. Using Buffalo Creek as the fulcrum, Erikson provides readers with a good introduction of communities and trauma. It is interesting to note the similarities and differences between the aftermaths of Sept 11 and Buffalo Creek. Erikson's book is a must read for social scientists and anyone interested in creative non-fiction writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent description of a tragic disaster in West Va.
Excellent descriptions of how survivors dealt with the total destruction of everything they had built and accomplished in their entire lives. All of this was taken from them by a "man made" damn and wall of water within minutes. Mr. Erikson did a wonderful job of relating to the people from the coal camps and realizing what their lives had been about......he truely shows the suffering involved in this disaster.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strategic capabilities can be born unintentionnally
A book that tries to highlight the role of system formation processes that aren't deliberately planned in Toyota. It is written after the author's past works on functional analysis of existing/planned manufacturing systems in automobile industry and Toyota in particular. The presentation adopts the evolutionary approach considering that manufacturing systems aren't merely a product of deliberately planning. Some of Toyota's successful routines may have originated unintentionally. Social systems often evolve because of unanticipated events and unplanned behavior. This idea is related to system emergence, a concept central to the evolutionary framework the author has adopted. What the author has presented and uncovered from Toyota's experience can be happened in other companies or may have been taken place in other companies. This is an example of presentation that we cannot find easily for other successful companies using an evolutionary approach, not strictly in a neo-darwinian framework. This book gives us general idea on how company's organizational capabilities were born and helps us understand particularly how Toyota has created its style manufacturing system and capabilities. A book that is worth-reading not only for scholars and students in management and organizational science, but also by those being actors in companies' building capabilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good filters book
Wai-Kai Chen is a good filter books author. For a good understand, you have to work with a synthesis software at www.filterscad.com

4-0 out of 5 stars little comments to this book
The book is divided into different sections, written by different groups of authors. At the end of each section you have a lot of references, so you can follow the topic deeper. These sections (13) cover most of the electronic knowledge you could use as experienced/professional user (feedback, nonlinear, CAD, distributed circuits,FILTERS of course, and many more). The quality of information given is very good, analog electronic design is covered excellently, digital related to analog then little bit worse.
I recommend this book to buy, I just have some comments:
1) The book is strongly theoretical (lots of equations), there is not a lot of examples (if I compare to Horovitz et Hill)
2) Some chapters are just passed very quickly (for example PLDs - 22V10 etcetc, no deep descriptions how to do that, just explanation what it is - the question then is, why they put it into that book)
3) Examples are few and in most of the cases they show just principle of work, so don't expect values of components. (one example for all: design of switched filter - you can see block schematic with a lot of MOS-like switches, but no real implementation of these switches. Then when you want to design this type of filter, you find out that it is not so easy to realize mos-switch because you have to take into account another things like back-injection of the charge, which are not mentioned etcetc) That lack of full examples is pitty, because then you cannot calculate backwards with the theory presented, and check for mistakes in your thinking.
4) Format of the book: the book is large and heavy (~2900pages), so manipulation is unpleasant. Perhaps if the book was divided into 4 thinner.... okay, but this is just my subjective opinion.
----------
Conclusion:
Although the book has some lacks, I strongly recommend to buy it. I would also recommend to buyer to invest another ~70USD to Horovitz&Hill-The Art of Electronics, because this book is very good complement to the one reviewed here. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars painful... even by undergraduate math textbook standards
I remember this ghastly nightmare from my undergraduate days. It was the only math textbook that I really struggled with. Part of that was probably due to having an inordinately lousy professor, but part of it is because the book reads more like a quick review for people who already know the subject matter than as an actual tool for learning.

As a contrast, check out what people are saying about "A Book of Abstract Algebra" by Pinter -- they're right, THAT is everything a math textbook should be. My class never quite finished it, but I had no trouble reading the later chapters on my own. I still have a copy of Chung's book, but it only has one remotely interesting thing in it that I remember, which was Laplace's calculation of the probability that the sun will rise tomorrow.

Bottom line: if you're unfortunate enough to end up with a professor who is still using Chung's book (I used it in 1997) ... run! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lemonade Sun
With this book of poems you can smack your lips with the tangy sweetness of taste, sound, touch and remember. JELLYFISH touches my memory with clear pictures of a child at the shore. These verses remind me of Jane Yolen's COLOR ME A RHYME, and my own ANIMAL ACADEMY, with its playfulness and spontaneity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Refreshing!
Jan Spivey Gilchrist's impressionistic illustrations capture the imagery of poet Rebecca Kai Dotlich's carefree summer. You'll lick your lips after drinking in LEMONADE, hold your ears as FIREWORKS explodes off the page and you'll feel your toes wiggle as BAREFOOT tickles your feet in the new grass. What a refreshing way to wind down a funfilled summer day!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book took me back to my childhood and sweet memories.
Lemonade Sun reminded me of my own childhood; I too, grew up in the fifties. It brought back so many memories. I could almost smell the fireflies that we collected in glass jars, and the thrill of being able to do double-dutch longer than the other kids. The lemonade stands, bubbles, dragonflies and jacks are all dear to me. It certainly is a book that children will love, and adults will cherish. My personal favorite is Summer Swinging. The illustrations are incredible! It is truly a fun book for all ages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great treatment of expansive subject
Various Jewish Christian authors explore aspects of the
messianic hopes/doctrine held over Jewish history, Discussion includes messianic texts in the Tanakh, the Dead Sea scrolls, time calculations, Jewish objections to Jesus, Messianic Jewish Believers in Israel. It also includes discussion of the shocking view of those Lubavitcher Hasidic Jews who held now-deceased Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson to be the Messiah.
"In its attempt to prove that Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson was the potential Messiah, Habad has used biblical texts and messianic ideas that up until a few decades ago were not even whispered in hiding places," points out Tsvi Sadan in Chapter 11. Interesting reading indeed, for those interested in Jewish messianic ideas, biblical foundations for such... and who want to learn of One whose coming was in accord with Jewish tradition, Scripture and validated historically. Enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars A sad readign experience.
I find the attempts of comparison of Lubavitch and Christianity morally and religiously offensive ... Read more
