Product Description
Creating your dream house—a prospect as exciting as it is daunting. Michael Smith, a favorite among celebrity clientele, reveals the method of his design magic. Offering thoughtful ideas and practical advice, the designer walks the reader through his process, from the gathering of resource material (from magazines and iconic films to something as simple as a shell or a swatch of vintage fabric), expertly pairing simpler and grander elements (or inexpensive with more extravagant objects), perfecting the editing process, to knowing when a room is finished. Detailing the nearly encyclopedic range of styles he culls from to create his signature style, the designer describes recent examples of his work, beginning with a modest and quirkily designed house in Bel Air, Smith redid for himself. Razed, rebuilt, and decorated over the course of five years, the house allowed Smith to experiment and explore ideas freely and the result is a gracious home, as welcoming as it is stylish. In addition to his California residence, twenty other projects are featured, from a New England clapboard to a Malibu villa overlooking the Pacific to a city townhouse. In each, Smith deconstructs the elements which come together to make the ideal home. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Money and Taste
"Houses" is an excellent work for those with no concerns about spending but with an interest in a classy blend of colors, textures and furniture in a variety of settings. Michael S. Smith's book takes readers through more than a dozen examples of his work, ranging from beachfront homes in California to a residence in London, a home on Martha's Vineyard and a Long Island estate. Smith's homes each have their own look but carry his stamp of hybrid styles and classic tastes. This is a useful book for interior designers and fans of the quiet, moneyed look, especially those who like Smith's subtle style. No one image in this well-photographed book screams out for attention but quality pours off every page.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacking
Not nearly as good as his first book "Elements of Style".Although I am a big fan of Michael and his work (he is one of the most talented designers), the photos were horrendous, they all appeared yellowish and not all that clear.I did enjoy the text; Michael has a way with words and expresses himself with precision and humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what happens when piles of money and talent combine.
An excellent second effort from the designer to the super rich. Smith has exquisite taste and clearly a connoisseur's eye.The designer's own written text gives one good insight into the interior designer's inspirations and jumping off points for his interior schemes. The photography is splendid.A must for any design follower who relishes the English country house ideal as freshened by a young American.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slightly uninspiring
I got this book as I was interested to know what the Obama's new decorator was like. I am a fan of the English traditional look. I enjoyed the stories about projects Michael Smith has worked on but found, like another reviewer, the interiors presented lacked excitement and wit. I don't know whether it is just the photos aren't that clear or what it is, the photos are a bit dull. I saw Michael Smith's work in photos in the magazine Domino and they seemed much better presented, better lighting etc.

I personally prefer the great English interior designer, Nina Campbell's books. They seem to have that excitement, glamour and unexpected quality that I am looking for. It's just a personal opinion though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific study of the design process
I've long admired interiors designed by Michael Smith, and have installed his line of fixtures for Kallista in my bathroom. His latest book explains his design process by touring his own home and several others. The commentary is wonderful, and will give the reader a preview of what he will do to redecorate the private residence of President Obama's White House.Terrific! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I enjoyed, but I didn't find anything in the book quite as beautiful as the cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST AMERICAN DESIGNERS
MICHAEL SMITH IS ONE OF THE BEST AMERICAN DESIGNERS PRACTICING TODAY AND IT SHOWS IN THIS BEAUTIFULLY PHOTOGRAPHED BOOK...EVERYTHING ABOUT THE TEXT, THE WAY IT IS WRITTEN AND HOW IT LEADS YOU THROUGH THE BOOK, IS FIRST RATE.....I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR WHAT WILL EVENTUALLY BE HISTORICAL INTERIORS; AND ITS DESIGNER, WHO WILL BE IN THE YEARS AHEAD THOUGHT OFAS AGREAT, GREAT DECORATOR...MR SMITH KNOWS HOW TO PUT ATMOSPHERE INTO A ROOM......

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael S. Smith, artist
This book is instructional and very well done. The "instructions" are in the photographs.Read them like paintings, which is how I think Michael S. Smith's rooms each look. There are 2 illustrations in the Amazon listing.Look first at the pictures of the room with the green sofa, then at the cover illustration. Then, please, read below & see whether you agree with me.

1. Pairs help to create a formal look:See the 2 leaf green lamps w/blue grey shades, 2 crystal sconces on end wall, 2 ornate crystal candelabra, 2 brass candlesticks on mantle, and 2 photos framed alike.
2. Echoes:Black fireplace box w/white surround & mantle echoes... the black & white photographs/sketches w/white mats & black frames and...the black piano next to all-white floor lamp; Painting of black curving figures on light tan background in brass/gilt frame echo the very solid black coffee table on the cream rug w/tan curving figures.
3. Use of Color in this Room:A subtle example -- There are 3 pieces of furniture with painted wood (excluding the piano):A chair with a cream/white frame, a table/stool in oxblood, and a settee with a blue grey frame. These are shades of the three primary colors. The colors of these 3 painted pieces together comprise the complete spectrum. The "color scheme" of the room as a whole also comprises the complete spectrum. The painted wood is a microcosm of this characteristic of the room.(And the complete spectrum gives us? ...Light.)
4. Gradations of Tints:The use of light-to-dark shades of each color gives a painterly quality to the room, softening the contrasts of colors and emphasizing the volume of the architecture, of the space.RED:cherry rug border, oxblood table, deep coral chair, pink & red flowers (5 shades of red, 3 not counting flowers).GREEN:deep & light green in settee fabric, brighter green in sofa & curtains, slightly brighter green in lamp bases, spring green in leafy bouquet (5 shades of green, 4 not counting bouquet).GOLD:Cream walls & rug background, gilt of picture frame & candlesticks on mantle & gold of print on settee, light tan of painting background and sisal rug, light camel of rug pattern and side chair, deep bronze of oblong sofa pillow and mantle figure, muted yellow of Chinese vase, sunny yellow of blossoming plant on coffee table.(7 shades of yellow, 6 not counting flowering plant).BLUE:Light & darker blue in settee print, soft deeper blue of Chinese vase (3 shades of blue).
5. Use of Black:Always important, but especially obvious here. It's needed to balance the massive black piano.
6. Rooms Need an Element of Surprise. Here it's the settee. The architecture of this room, its paneled walls, high ceilings, wide windows and volume, as well as that 7-foot Steinway (I think.) suggest the use of traditional furnishings. The settee is a subtle and beautiful contrast to the overall English look here. The "surprise" of a steel & glass table, for example, would have been a boring cliché and no surprise at all, don't you think?
7. Now for the Cover Photo. Its design follows that of the previous room, even though the style is completely different. The branches and leaves of the paper, bouquet and table echo one another. Here too the colors yellow, blue/green and red all range from light to dark, pale to bright, and there is a restrained presence of black. The bright blue Chinese vase, the gilt table and the cherry red (of the cherries) in the paper dramatically form a full spectrum, emphasize the full-spectrum of the color scheme and create light right across the center of the photograph. The surprise here is the hand.I think the main role of the pagodas is as verticals against the movement in different directions of all the curvy diagonals in the paper, the table and the vase of branches.
8. True, in the end, it's in the eye of the beholder. And yes, some, even many, of the rooms in this book may not be what you want for yourself.Nevertheless, study this book -- carefully. Then follow Michael S. Smith's lead.Simple as that!(Sorry this is a bit long.)

2-0 out of 5 stars "A lot of money for a book cover"
I bought this book onlybecause of the very rich Tony Douquette-like intior on the cover, fully expecting to see more of the same or similar inside. After all isn't the cover supposed to represent the main "idea". It spoke to me in my language, and looked like a room ripped from my own home. A friend of mine saw it and even said it looked like I had designed the room myself. Big mistake. There is nothing in the book that comes close to the richness, depth and beauty of the picture on the cover. It was a big disipointment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sophisticated style
This book is perfect for the advanced home owner or individuals who have developed a mature and sophisticated style.I find myself returning again and again to the advice of Michael Smith. The more I know about design the more I appreciate his unstructured yet very elegant and extremely discerning method of putting a home together.A terrific resource from a very talented designer!!! ... Product Description
They were raised for one chilling purpose....

A loner, an ex-cop, Jack Randall is the dangerous veteran of a savage war. All he's held dear has long been destroyed. For the last five years, he's been hiding out on a Spares Farm, guarding those who've been prisoners from birth. Now he's on the run with seven of the Farm's inmates (well, six and a half), and the people who own them will do anything to get them back. What's worse, Jack is on a head-on collision course with a cold-blooded killer with one purpose: to cancel Jack once and for all. Jack has a tough decision to make: keep running or even the score. Either way spells trouble...the kind of trouble most people run screaming from.

Who are the Spares? And what is their purpose? That is the most shocking revelation of all.

Amazon.com Review
Imagine a future--next year, perhaps?--in which the wealthyclone themselves at birth to provide spare parts for their bodies asthey become needed. Drop into that scenario a tough but compassionateex-cop who decides to liberate seven "spares" from the farmwhere they're being kept until needed, and you've got a lively, verymoving combination of genres that has already been bought for the bigscreen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best
I actually thought this was one of the better books. I have read Only Forward, and I actually prefer Spares over it. This is one book that I will pick up and read again and again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as ONly Forward
.. but still a great book. Its easy to see that MMS has a set of pots on his desk top, containing slips of papers with similar plot devices in, and like the world cup draw, he draws one plot device from each pot. "Cynical world weary protagonist - check","fantastic other dimension - check" , "amusing talking electronic gadgets - check", ok, lets go. And despite the fact he obviously does this, his books are excellent, well written, and refreshingly different enough to stand out, even today. of course Only Forward was one of those life changing books for me when I read it, but Spares is pretty good. I was destroyed when the film "The Island" with Ewan McBland came out as it obviously ripped off this book, and that it now means that Spares will not now be made as a film. Which is probably a good thing (see my review of The Postman, {the book, not the turkey}). The one thing that would make me wary of seeing Spares as a film is the level of violence, I am a bit of a softy and dont watch or read horror, and particularly violence towards children, well, there is a good bit in this book that would make it difficult to realise as a film I would say. This is a pretty good book though, and better than about 95% of anything else you will read. And I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Journy
I was amazed by Spares, i first read The Straw Men by Michael Marshall and loved it, so i picked up Spares and tore through it in a few days. Fantasticbook, amazingly original ideas and distinct fun-to-read page turning writing style. It's true that most of Michael Marshall Smith's protagonists are somewhat similar, but every book is unique and every story is original and mind blowing. After enjoying Spares so much, ranking it very high up in my all time favorites list, i now own every book written by Michael Marshall Smith or Michael Marshall, i have been reading a book a week for years now, and Marshall provided me with some of my best reads.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
This novel blew me away. I've read a plethora of science-fiction but not until now have I been this impressed with the style, tone and mood of a story. The world of the story is extremely compelling and plausible and, I'm sure, draws inspiration from the subgenre of 80s cyberpunk Sci-Fi. Marshall Smith has a superb style with some amazingly well put cynical lines. This work should be on any list of must-read literature - Sci-Fi or non Sci-Fi - and I consider Marshall Smith a contemporary Oscar Wilde when it comes to dialogue and cynicism.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, Indifferent Execution
Smith's first book, "Only Forward", captured my interest completely. After I read "One Of Us" though, I started to wonder if he might have gotten lucky that one time. After "Spares", I'm almost sure of it. A great idea, to be sure, the idea of genetic spare parts, but Smith floats the idea at the beginning and then abandons it in favour of a b-grade detective chase which yields no surprises. The main character is Smith's usual protagonist, a hard-edged Bruce Willis-esque ex-military type living in the shadow of his own harsh experience, chain-smoking furiously while making cynical observations about the cruelty of life; his outlook, while sometimes accompanied by wit, is neither original nor particularly insightful, and far too predictable. Also, some scenes (clones being abused and raped, for example, despite being owned by the super-rich) make no sense except to function as a vehicle for adding shock value. I'm all for shock and violence, but if it has no point, it's just not credible. Sure, it sold as a movie, but so did "Paycheck". Even as a detective chase, this story offers little. Skip it. ... The Irish have left an indelible mark in the most hostile territory on earth, Antarctica. It was the Irish who pioneered a route to the Antarctic and whose adventures 100 years ago gripped the attention of the world. Their contribution is now told in a single volume celebrating their amazing exploits. Modern Athens is a bustling, overgrown city, continually coming to terms with its illustrious past. Product Description

“Engrossing. . . . As a rollicking chronicle of demented derring-do, Smith’s book is hard to beat. His research is prodigious and his eye for a good story impeccable, and his book, while perfectly scholarly, often reads like a real-life James Bond thriller.”—Dominic Sandbrook, The Sunday Times

Six tells the complete story of the Secret Intelligence Service’s birth in 1909 and its first thirty years, including the tragic tale of what happened to Britain’s extensive interwar networks in Soviet Russia. It tells the story of Britain’s hidden networks in the United States, thwarting German shipping saboteurs and tracking down Indian seditionaries. It also shows the development of “tradecraft” and the great personal risk officers and their agents took, far from home and unprotected, as well as the violence meted out in the King’s name—including running a Swiss murder gang that used attractive girls to lure and murder Bolshevik messengers.

This first part of Six takes us up to the eve of World WarII, using hundreds of previously unreleased files and interviews with key players to show how one of the world’s most secretive of secret agencies originated and developed into something like the MI6 we know today.

Michael Smith, former military intelligence officer and award-winning journalist, is one of the world’s leading experts on Britain’s spies. The defense correspondent of The Sunday Times, he is author of the bestseller Killer Elite: The Inside Story of America's Most Secret Special Operations Team and Foley: The Spy Who Saved 10,000 Jews.

This widely anticipated volume offers a systematic introduction to and striking analysis of the central issues animating current debate in moral philosophy. It will be of interest to anyone with a serious interest in the philosophical foundations of ethics. Topics discussed include: realist vs. anti-realist accounts of moral truth, cognitivist vs expressivist accounts of moral judgement; internalist vs externalist accounts of the relation between moral judgment and the will; Humean vs anti-Humean theories of motivation; and the debate between those who think that morality is a system of hypothetical imperatives and those who think that moral requirements are categorical. In 2000, The Moral Problem received The American Philosophical Association's first APA Book Prize for excellence in scholarship. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An elegant solution to pressing problems
This book is the most exciting book that I have read in a long time. Prime virtues of the book are clarity of exposition, and breath of topics covered. Smith shows how many controversial issues in contemporarymeta-ethics come together in what he calls `the Moral Problem': three ofour intuitions - three plattitudes about moral judgement and human action -seem to be inconsistent. Most current ethical theories deal with thisapparent inconsistency by rejecting one of the three plattitudes. Smith, onthe other hand, provides a very elegant solution to this moral paradox byshowing how the three plattitudes are both consistent andtrue.

Plattitude 1: moral judgements have a truth value (objectivity ofmoral judgements). Plattitude 2: moral judgements consitute reasons foraction (practicality of moral judgements). Plattitude 3: desires areconstitutive of reasons for action (folk psychology).

1 and 2 entail thatbeliefs - states that have a truth value - constitute reasons for action, contrary to 3. 2 and 3 imply that moral judgements are (or express) desires- states that do not have a truth value - contrary to 1. 1 and 3 result inthe conclusion that desires have truth values, contrary to 2 - as reasonsfor action are constituted by non-cognitive states, i.e. states without atruth value.

As will be clear to those familiar with contemporarymeta-ethics, proposing a solution to this problem requires an analysis ofrival solutions as given by for example expressivism, cognitivism, anderror theory. Smith gives such an analysis and forcefully argues that thesesolutions are flawed. His own solution starts by pointing out that -although plattitude 3 is indeed a plattitude and should be retained - it isnot the whole story about human motivation. If you want to find out moreabout these issues, this is the book to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sensory Treat for Eyes, Ears and Heart
"Healing rain is coming down,
It's coming nearer to this old town.
Rich and poor,
Weak and strong,
Bringing mercy...
It won't be long."
(Punctuation by reviewer)

"...I will send down showers in season, there will be showers of blessing." Ezekiel 34:26b (KJV)

I'm not sure I know how to go about reviewing this. The book itself is a beautiful creation, white and silver, embossed with raindrops, captured as they collect and run down an unseen surface. But I do know that this beautiful gift-book is a keeper. The DVD is a sensory treat with exceptional photography to bless the eyes while the music touches the soul.

Michael W. Smith is a gifted, talented Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter. Of course, you already knew that. Inspired by Michael's hit song Healing Rain, this book not only contains the lyrics of the song...it reveals additional inspirational depths that reach out to those who need the "healing rain" and the soothing words of comfort and counsel. It speaks to the hurting, seeking, depressed, the sick in body and mind, and promises that God is never far away.

This little 6-1/4" square book - only 63 pages - shares meaningful scripture and quotations - and some fantastic photography. The same is true with the DVD. While you listen to the song and experience that healing rain, you are treated to some of the most beautiful, breathtaking scenery imaginable...all quite appropriate to the song, the lyrics and the title.

Say's Smith: "He [God] is ready and willing. He wants to wash each of us clean . . . in His healing rain. Are you ready?"

Do you need this healing rain? Are there family members or friends who might need to feel His healing touch? Then please get this gift book and DVD, which tucks nicely into its own pouch inside the back cover, soon. The music, the words, the book...everything...will bless, comfort, soothe...and heal. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Narration
I bought GOSPELS COME TO LIFE several years ago when it was first released. I purchased it chiefly because I love the Bible and I love Michael W. Smith. It was my first audio bible purchase (although it is only the gospels). And I appreciated it when I bought it. I was encouraged to listen to the cds at the time. But I didn't truly come to appreciate Michael W. Smith's narration until after I purchased the LISTENER'S BIBLE narrated by Max McLean several years later. Michael's reading is natural and flows smoothly. The background music never commands center stage. McLean's narration is far from natural. Never has anyone read anything so overly dramatic andunnatural. His pronunciation is so over the top and his reading rhythm bizarre. It is painful to the ears to listen to him read. I feel awful having spent so much money on a group of cds that I won't ever listen to in all likelihood because of the bad narration. Recently I began listening to these cds (Gospels Come To Life) again. Wow! What a difference the narration makes. Instead of focusing on the narrator's quirks....you focus on the Word of God.I wish that Michael W. Smith would finish narrating the New Testament because his natural understated style is infinitely better than Max McLean's over the top production.

5-0 out of 5 stars The words DID come to life-my life.
I absolutely LOVE this set! I love the Bible, love God, and love the words of Jesus Christ. So have a wonderful man who truly believes use his magnificent, heartfelt voice to tell the truth and what do you get? Pure magic! When I am in my car, I am listening. I am truly blessed, and a special thanks to Laura, a beautiful friend with a beautiful heart that handed this set to me at work one day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed My Life

5-0 out of 5 stars Help with shifting your Consciousness
As a fellow emotional intuitive I found Micheal's book Navigating 2012 very enlightening and extremely inspiring. One of the chapters I found of personal interest was the one on Past Lives. In addition I particularly liked the reference to unique gifts we develop as a result of waking up. Micheal draws on his own experience and uses examples of working with his own clients which makes it more credible. As a spiritual coach the excercises that Micheal gives in helping those people who are having difficulty during the shift to awakening are both practical and informative and I would be more than happy to recommend them to my own clients along with following a few of them for myself. My only minor critism is that Micheal could perhaps in future editions index the excercises so that readers can go back and do the excercises over again. Overall its an excellent book and one I would highly recommend.

Michael W. Smith wrote Cobras and Their Kin, a quick and easy reference guide on snakes of all kinds, because he felt there was a lack of books on the subject. This book describes the vast differences between species and gives pertinent information on a dozen or so different kinds.

There are also technical terms used for breeding as the reader is informed whether the snake is oviparous or viviparous as well as the typical number of offspring.
