Product Description
Village greens surrounded by neat, white-framed houses, Yankee farmers and sturdy fishermen, country stores and church spires-all these images evoke New England, though much of the region was industrialized long ago. This fascinating book examines pictures of Old New England created by diverse artists between 1865 and 1945 and inquires how and why Americans treasure and maintain these images. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shaped regionalism
This is a remarkable book.It could not exist but for cultural studies and postmodernism. The time frame is 1865 to 1945.By 1865 New England was the most highly urbanized area in the U.S.By 1875 more than half of the Massachusetts residents lived in cities.

Maine's greatest period of industrialization occurred between 1880 and 1910.In the last quarter of the century New England seemed to be thriving, but it was no longer in the economic vanguard. Also, growth for the cities meant crisis for the countryside.Rural isolated areas became vacation sites and artistic destinations. In the 1920's Massachusetts lost jobs in textiles and shoes.

From the 1870's and on vast numbers of scenic-rural paintings were produced. In the early 1870's APPLETON'S JOURNALran a series entitled picturesque America.Chapters included the coast of Maine, Providence, the White Mountains.A wealth of images were created by artists and writers.New England became a national memory bank.

The pilgrims and the Revolutionary War were historicized. After the Civil War antiquarianism was evident at all levels of society. The chapter on yankee modernism encompassing John Marin, Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley, Edward Hopper, Charles Demuth is delightful.Artist biographies appear at the back of the book. The pictures are splendid. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Turgid and Difficult Read
If one wanted to read a book about very little to nothing, one could always, I suppose, read 'The Making of Americans' by Gertrude Stein. With little discernible plot and bogged down with seemingly endless pages of repetition, the only reason one would read this work would be to try to understand Miss Stein's literary methodology. As is well known, she was an author who was obviously fascinated by word and sentence rhythms even at the expense of producing a readable and understandable work of fiction.

The narrative itself takes excruciatingly long to really get anywhere in its attempt to tell the story of several American families in pursuit of the American dream (if one could call Stein's interpretation of the 'American Dream' an historically and culturally correct interpretation) and, in the end, a reader with the stamina to finally reach the end of 'The Making of Americans' is surely going to be left perplexed, confused and probably, more than anything else, mentally exhausted.

Nevertheless, Stein's use of words and sentences to form assorted and varied rhythmic structures was quite revolutionary in its day and, for many, continues to be a source of interest.I don't believe many modern day authors use or even attempt to use this sort of methodology in their own work - at least I, myself, have never seen it done and this is probably because most writers of today write for the mass market where little is demanded of readers and where technique must remain simplistic and easily understandable.

If one wants to learn more about the use of rhythms and how they are achieved through various forms of repetition, then 'The Making of Americans' is required reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written!
It is a shame that so much of Gertrude Stein's work is dismissed because of its unconventionality.Though sometimes difficult to read, Stein's writing has a lyrical quality about it unparalleled by the work of other writers. The Making of Americans is probably one of her best, and well worth the effort it might take to read it.I found that after only a few pages, I was moved along by the rhythm and cadence that carries the story.A wonderful read!

5-0 out of 5 stars The great unsung classic of the twentieth century.
What starts of as an anecdotal recounting of what I imagine is Stein's forefathers and foremothers immigrant experience launches off into a brilliant, highly intellectual examination and rhapsody of individualityand conformity among other things (like death and consciousness and thebattle between the sexes). This book will literally change the way youthink you think. I think it should. ... Read more

Product Description
Reflecting critically on the discipline of African American studies is a complicated undertaking, and making sense of the black American experience requires situating it within the larger cultural, political-economic, and ideological dynamics that shape American life. Renewing Black Intellectual History moves away from privileging racial commonality as the fulcrum of inquiry and moves toward observing the quality of the accounts scholars have rendered of black American life. This book maps the changing conditions of black political practice and experience from Emancipation to Obama with excursions into the Jim Crow era, Black Power radicalism, and the Reagan revolt. Here are essays, classic and new, that define historically and conceptually discrete problems affecting black Americans as these problems have been shaped by both politics and scholarly fashion. A key goal of the book is to come to terms with the changing terrain of American life in view of major Civil Rights court decisions and legislation. ... Read more

From the supplier: The US needs further development on international business in order to remain competitive. The primordial factor to accomplish this goal is education. A focus on foreign study program provides the solution to the inadequate background of American students on foreign business policies. One such program being practiced by one university is ideal for both academic benefits and financial dilemmas of the participants. The program includes studies of a country's economy before departure and a more intense on-the-spot education.

Product Description
Most estate planning courses are centered around the estate tax. In the face of the uncertain future of the estate tax, it has become increasingly difficult for teachers to focus class concentration on planning strategies. Moreover, the slated increases in the estate tax exemption are making conventional approaches to estate planning less relevant to increasing numbers of Americans. Nonetheless, most individuals and families of moderate to substantial wealth will still have considerable interest in a variety of wealth-related issues. Attorneys must be prepared to assist their clients in coping with these issues. Moreover, most lawyers will themselves personally have to confront a number of wealth-related issues. The purpose of this book is to provide a teaching tool for a course centered around such issues. Until the publication of this book, there were no published materials available and teachers typically used customized materials. This book consists of ten chapters dedicated to the following wealth-related issues: (1) investment strategies; (2) an overview of income tax issues that impact families and individuals; (3) the law governing the transmission of wealth; (4) the basic structure of estate and gift taxation; (5) home ownership; (6) meeting the cost of higher education; (7) life and disability insurance; (8) planning for retirement; (9) elder law; and (10) economic failure and asset protection. Each chapter has been written by an expert in the area. The chapters have all been written with an emphasis on how economics and the law impact individual and family planning and decision-making in the various areas covered by each chapter. Each chapter has been written so that it stands alone, thereby enabling an adopter to skip portions of the book or reorder assignments as deemed appropriate. The materials are textual and include a substantial number of problems to facilitate classroom use and discussion. ... Read more
