Product Description
Richard Matlak delves into the burgeoning field of psychobiography and takes a new look at the writings of William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Dorothy Wordsworth. He examines the intimate relationship between the three writers for clues to their poems, providing a major reinterpretation of their canonical works based on psychological and intertextual contexts. The themes of romance, incest, guilt, and familial breakdown and reunion are especially scrutinized in the work and lives of these prominent figures. In particular, he gives long-overdue credit to Dorothy Wordsworth for her profound influence on her brother's major verse and details the effect their relationship had on the work of Coleridge, causing us to view all creative relationships in a new light. Offering original insights and dramatic new readings of some classic works of poetry, The Poetry of Relationship blends literary analysis with the evolving biography of human relationships. ... Product Description
E. P. Taylor was one of the greatest and most successful business figures of the 20th century.

After building an empire in the beer business in the '30s, Taylor went to Ottawa as one of the legendary "dollar-a-year men" during the Second World War. When the war ended, he turned his hand to putting together the biggest Canadian conglomerate of the time: the giant Argus Corporation. With his colleagues, Taylor controlled businesses worth hundred of millions of dollars--in groceries (Dominion Stores), farm machinery (Massey Harris), broadcasting (CFRB), building supplies, land development. For forty years, his name was synonymous with wealth and power in Canada.

Written in collaboration with Taylor himself during his Bahamian retirement, E.P. Taylor is the fascinating story of the creation of one of Canada' greatest business empires. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thorough Evaluation and Analysis
In a rapidly globalizing world fueled by investments in information technologies, a global knowledge and information society is emerging. However, distribution of and access to digital information is unequal - both within and between countries. This inequality is mirrored by inequality of income, and is referred to as the Global Digital Divide.

This book is the result of a study undertaken bythe East West Center in Hawaii in collaboration with the Institute for Information Policy of Penn State University. The study tracks and discusses the ways in which five developing Asian countries (China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and India) have attempted to narrow the digital gap by establishing information-based technology parks. The proponents hope that these parks will promote the foreign direct investment, technology transfer, and research and development that will positively effect human capital (education, skills and employment levels) and overall economic growth.

The book also looks at the newly established technology park in Kapolei, Hawaii, and assess prospects for its success in emulating those parks already discussed.

The countries in this study display a wide range of political systems and different approaches to economic and technological development (including varying levels of government support). However the study found some commonalities which contributed to the success of IT parks in bridging the digital divide and their contribution to overall economic growth. These commonalities included coordination between public, private and foreign investment, infrastructure development, and an increasingly innovative science and engineering environment.

The study finds that technology parks can produce major economic, technological and socialbenefits. These benefits, along with increasing integration between countries of their programs have ramifications for global trade and employment patterns. Without a doubt, the divide between the developing countries of Asia and the developed West is narrowing.

However, despite the dramatic improvements in the economies of each country and the role that IT parks play in diffusing IT to surrounding areas, there is evidence that the digital gap within some countries is widening. For example, in China rapid regional growth and investment has seen the economic gap between rich and poor areas increase, resulting in the movement of millions of people per year from the poorer regions to the cities. As the secretary-general of the ITU is cited, the world must make sure that efforts to bridge the digital divide isn't unwittingly contributing to widening it.

I found this book very informative - it gives an account of the approaches taken by the five Asian countries and the factors which influenced their policy decisions which, while in-depth, is nevertheless easy to read and understand.I would have appreciated more insight into the social effects of these policies, a limitation of scope which the editors readily acknowledge. Perhaps this is a subject which could be the focus of companion book in the future.

Product Description
Brands occupy an increasingly prominent place in the managerial mind as well as the cultural landscape. Recent research has shown that brands are interpreted or read in multiple ways, prompting an important and illuminating reconsideration of how branding "works," and shifting attention from brand producers toward consumer response to understand how branding interacts with consumers to create meaning. Largely missing from these insights, however, is an awareness of basic cultural processes that affect contemporary brands, including historical context, ethical concerns, and consumer response. Neither managers nor consumers completely control branding processes - cultural codes constrain how brands work to produce meaning. Brand Culture places brands firmly within culture to look at the complex underpinnings of branding processes.

The reader finds case studies of iconic global brands, such as Benetton, LEGO, and Ryanair, and offers practical managerial advice as well as thoughtful analyses of broad concepts and strategic brand management by leading brand researchers, including John Balmer, Stephen Brown, Mary Jo Hatch, Majken Schultz, Soren Askegaard, Richard Elliott and Jean-Noel Kapferer. ...
