Product Description

Doctor, angler, and raconteur Donald Thomas takes fishermen on a rollicking road trip through Alaska, Costa Rica, Australia, the Galapagos, and more. Fishing in oceans along the way, he enjoys the kind of adventures most people can only dream of. Each chapter includes a sidebar that gives Thomas an opportunity to riff entertainingly on a particular game fish, as well as an “At a Glance” section with both the current IGFA All-Tackle and Fly-Rod world records for that species. The fish he tackles include the sheefish (North America’s “most elusive and mysterious game fish”), smallmouth bass, mojarra and machaca, barramundi, mahi-mahi, and many more.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I have most all the Thomas books and was eager to see this one. I like offbeat stories about non-trout fishing. At first, I was ready to dismiss this book as weaker than his previous work. The pieces were very short and lacked snap in many cases, however, by the time I was done I was pleased and entertained. It was a case of the sum is greater than the parts. While maybe not as good as the Whitefish book, I think most anyone interested in the wider world of fishing will like it. Not many books discuss fly fishing for halibut or Central America panfish.

I did get tired of the fly rod snobbery and the dismissal of carp fishing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another success from Don Thomas
Not quite up there with Whitefish Can't Jump, his first and my favourite book on fly-fishing, but another excellent account of fly-fishing and life in many areas around the world, with associated musings on many topics related to conservation, fishing, and especially fun. A fabulous addition to the shelf of anyone who enjoys flyfishing in exotic locations - especially the salt - and likes to dream about the places they will one day visit. ... Read more

Product Description
"Hunts are best measured by the endurance of the memories they produce," E. Donnall Thomas Jr. writes in this, his first collection of waterfowling essays. He might have added that good books are likewise measured by how vivid, and how long, they remain in the mind of the reader. By Dawn's Early Light is a book that will stay with you long after you have read it.Though he has pursued big game, upland birds, and a variety of fish all over the world, Thomas reserves a special place in his heart for duck and goose hunting, That's because waterfowling is to him a uniquely American sport. A sport of home and hearth, of memories made even more poignant by the knowledge that the first light of dawn is fleeting and will not last. Thomas captures these moments so well that his memories become ours. (5 3/4 x 8 3/4, 200 pages, illustrations) ... Read more

If you love hunting and the out doors then you will love By Dawn's Early Light. E. Donnall Thomas Jr. takes your breath away as the book captures your hert and imagination and takes you to a land full of ducks and a good time.To any any one who has eve hunted you will be astounded by how this book puts it like it is.I made the mistake of reading this book during the "off season" and had I had more money would have bought every thing I couldd find in the Cabela's magazine. This unfortunetly was not the case and I had to suffer through moths of not being able to hunt untill finaly my savior came in the form of a teal. Product Description
This is a collection of essays covering fishing in many locations, from Christmas Island in search of bonefish, to an Alaskan river where boating a huge rainbow becomes more important than avoiding a midstream collision.Amazon.com Review
Having practiced medicine for more than 20 years in Alaska andMontana, E. Donnall Thomas Jr. packs an impressiverésumé for a trout bum. But as he points out in one ofthe essays in this intelligent, good-humored collection, his years ofexperience can all be reduced to a means to an end: fly-fishing. Thesedays, writing about the sport serves a similar purpose for Thomas, andhe demonstrates a thorough understanding of the genre in WhitefishCan't Jump, shifting seamlessly between memoir, travelogue, philosophic musing, and scientific inquiry. Each of the 19 essayscenters on a particular species of gamefish, but taxonomy is merely aspringboard for the stories and observations that lurk behind thespecies' Latin names like brown trout under the cutbanks: a hookedrainbow nearly provokes a mid-river contretemps with a swimminggrizzly, an impossible northern pike provides an evening distractionen route to a new job, and cutthroats inspire a remembrance of thejourney of Lewis and Clark. Whitefish is a welcome addition tofly-fishing literature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We need more flyfishing books like this!
Don Thomas writes as well about wildness and the sporting life as anyone alive today. Although he is probably better known for his bowhunting books, he writes just as well about bird hunting, and, in this case, flyfishing.

This is not just a list of fish taken and patterns used. Itis a book about the flyfishing experience, of people and places and, ofcourse, fish. Thomas has a naturalist's eye, and is fascinated by wildcreatures and the places they inhabit.

There are too many flowery, sentimental flyfishing books on the market, written by Norman Macleanwannabes. This book is not one of them. Thomas is not a yuppie rhapsodizingabout trout. He is a gifted writer who understands wildness and can conveywhat this wildness means to him.

It is one of the better flyfishing booksout there. Anyone who loves the pursuit of fish would love this book. ... Read more

Ethics and good taste, intelligence, knowledge and a special style of writing makes this book a winner on short stories of his observations, endurance and good humour. He doen't just want to be out there killing everything is sight. His anticipation starts from when the boots go on. Every shoot is not successful in a trophy, but it is award winning in the enjoyment of his pursuit.

5-0 out of 5 stars ... a dog for all seasons ...
I used to hunt a long time ago, but have since grown distant from any need to kill for sport ... so, I was initially rather hesitant about this purchase ... I've had the book for about a week now, gone through it from cover to cover, and must say the hunting element still disturbs me somewhat ... but the subject has been treated in the best possible manner ...

The book is well laid out, with quality paper and colour separation ... the photography is very good, the backdrops & landscapes breath taking ... the dogs themselves are shown at their best ... sharing quiet moments with their human partners ... running, playing and working in water ... and doing that which they excel ... retrieving. A wonderful book for all who love Labradors ... and can keep an open mind about hunting ...

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one labrador book, make it this one!
There are alot of labrador picture books, but this is one of the best I've seen. Not only is the photography technically suburb, but the unique ways in which these dogs are portrayed shows you how much Byran loves labs and how much time he spends around them.Mr. Bryan postulates in the intro that people who don't hunt can't really appreciate their lab's full potential. I don't hunt, so our lab is a family dog. But this book allowed me to understand what she's capable of and to appreciate her already fine qualities even more. ... Read more

In Fool Hen Blues, Don Thomas turns the sharp wit andkeen insight that readers enjoyed in Whitefish Can't Jump onthe art of wingshooting. His stories take us from the Kenai Peninsulaof Alaska to the high plains of central Montana.Throughout, Don'spassion for Labs is apparent as he makes his argument for using themas versatile retrievers. Fool Hen Blues is much more than acollection of outdoor vignettes. In these stories, hunting and theland comprise the framework for the larger picture of life'sexperiences. As Don says, "You will tell me that I am a lucky guybecause I have managed to live my life in remote places where thehunting is good and the pheasants are wild... I will then tell youthat it really isn't luck at all, that anyone can do it with a properordering of their priorities. Then you will say that I have got to bekidding, that no responsible person would really forsake career andmoney and cultural amenities just to live in places where there arewild birds. And I will say: 'Wanna bet?'"

I enjoyed this book.It made me want to go right out on the South Platte River southwest of Denver and start fishing.Mr. Thomas is a good writer who knows how to convey the excitement of fishing.I could identify with some of his stories. At points I found myself thinking:I've been there or done that. The only thing that put me off about this book was the very faint tinge of high-falutinism that comes through. What I mean is I get the feeling that I couldn't afford to go on most of the trips he takes.I wish someone would write a book about fishing the places close to home, the small waters, that most of us can get to.But, that was my only complaint.Otherwise, I liked the book.I learned some things about technique, even though this isn't a how-to book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Coffee-Table Book About Labrador Retrievers
Starting, as this book does, with the all too believable notion that the Labrador Retriever is perhaps the single most agreeable and people-oriented creature this side of Paradise, the author shows the reader how and why to care for God's most perfect earthly creature, the Labrador Retriever! He entices us into the earthly domain of the heavenly Labs with a torrent of photos that show them in all their splendor and glory, and reading this book is such an utter enjoyment it is easy to overlook the valuable information it also provides.

For example, by showing us the degree to which the breed represents a witch's brew of intelligence, honesty and loyalty to its human companions, the author illustrates why the Labrador has become the single most popular breed of dog in the world today. Labradors are sturdy creatures indeed, bred for sporting use along the quicksilver shores of Newfoundland, where the water temperatures and sea conditions require a healthy dollop of strength and endurance, and those are qualities these dogs have in spades.

For any of us that have seen them at work or play in the fields and in the water, their unique combination of physical attributes and obvious intelligence makes them the ideal human companion. I should know; I live with four of them! The proof of their adaptability to almost any condition and their loyalty, intelligence, and unparalleled work ethic is demonstrated by the wide use of them as guide dogs and as adjunct partners for the physically handicapped. Stories of Labradors crawling out onto the ice to save their masters are legendary, as are the tales of them rescuing children from fires or from underneath rubble. Never has there been a dog superior to them.

The author has testifed as to the qualities and abilities of the dog, and one walks away from a reading of the book much better informed as to the all of the many qualities and capabilities of the breed, which seems to represent an astonishing list of useful and worthwhile attributes. We also get quite critical information as to what to look for when choosing a lab, and how to analyze the quality of the puppy you see before you. The author offers information regarding genetics, feeding, health care, and inherited dispositions, as well as some sage advice as to how to ensure your puppy becomes the grown up Labrador companion you will come to view as another family member. This is a great book, and one I heartily recommend! Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Neal C. Murphy, CWRU, UCLA
With his prior collaborative book, "Principles of Tissue Engineering" this text, "Essentials of Stem Cell Biology" provides the essential rationale for that curious endeavor of applied biology we call "healthcare". While others are wringing hands and endlessly belaboring cost-effectiveness, access to care, competitive efficacy and other bureaucratic minutia, Bob Lanza has kept his eyes to the stars. Motivated no doubt by the thrill of discovery which truly historical thinkers enjoy, and others have inspired in Dr. Lanza, mankind surely benefits from the fruits of his labors. The contents, of this book, covering a plethora of topics and concepts, is so well organized that one could read it from beginning to end as a novel or piecemeal as queries demand from an encyclopedia. The limits of this text are merely those of a physical bound book itself. I pray the publishers will expand an online edition that can be edited and updated monthly, for that is the speed at which the future's promises emerge. Robert Lanza is that rare individual that knows a story, knows how to tell it well, and bring to practical fruition all its manifest gifts. In this regard he is a kind of Steve Jobs of biology and applied life sciences.

Yet, Dr. Lanza has not forgotten his clinical roots. While ideal in its concepts, the data in this book are equally practical since they provide intelligible rationales for the kind of innovative clinical procedures that each individual patient expects and prefers. All the Gaussian frequency distributions, categorical mandates and customs of clinical care, will not fill the void that emerges when a patient asks, "Isn't there anything you can do for me as an individual, Doctor? Each compassionate, humanistic and thinking clinician knows that the "average" patient is merely a statistical construct and in the real world one had better have a compelling argument for each individual treatment rendered. This book provides a tissue/cell level rationale for such treatment excellence, not that potpourri, that boiling stew of pseudo cures, commercial nostrums, shifting consensus and folklore that jams the flow of lucid clinical thought. Without the "North Star" of Lanza and his collaborators, the hapless clinician is sadly adrift in the intellectual seas of 21st Century life science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent place to start
This book is an excellent place to start if you're interested in stem cells. It covers just about all areas of research and is authoritatively authored by serveral experts in the field. The only caveat is that the field is changing so rapidly that some of the information in the book is a bit outdated (and of course, that's true of just about science text). However, you can quickly supplement the information in this book by getting more current research papers off pubmed or elsewhere. All in all, I think this book does provide an excellent foundation for getting into the field and understanding the basic science and its potential promise.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Summary of the State of the Art as it Exists Today.
This large book follows the common trend in new and emerging sciences in being written by a large number of authors who are active researchers in the field. The science simply has not yet had time to resolve itself into a common body of knowledge that one author can present to the world.

In this book there are some 200 contributors from literally around the world. A quick scan shows people from the United States, Israel, the UK, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, Japan and more. As you would expect each team of authors concentrates on the particular area of research in which he is engaged. This gives you an up to date view of the state of the art at the risk of having chapters of unequal quality.

The book starts off with the simple question, "What are stem cells." There are then chapters on what they do, how they work, methods and procedures used in research, and several chapters on how stem cell research is developing treatments for various diseases. The book concludes with four chapters on the regulations and ethics of stem cell research. This includes chapters on governmental and religious aspects. This sections concludes with a paper by the actress Mary Tyler Moore who has had type 1 diabetes for more than 40 years. She titles her chapter "It's Not About Curiosity, It's About Cures."

This book is the definitive state of the art as it exists today.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks sufficient references
The 69 chapters in this book, the 2nd edition published in July 2009, together contain a wealth of information from developmental biology and molecular biology to medicine. Many chapters contain helpful diagrams and pictures to go along with explanations. However, it is very mammalian-oriented, with insufficient coverage of regeneration and stem cell biology in non-mammals.In addition, this type of book should have many more references at the end of each chapter that can lead the reader to the original journal articles rather than a list of review articles. Some chapters have better lists of references than others.Overall, the Essentials of Stem Cell Biology contains more than essentials for mammalian stem cell biology, including methods, but is deficient in essentials such as non-mammalian stem cell biology and references to primary research articles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast shipping and good product
I have this book shipped from US to Thailand. I cannot believe that it takes only two weeks which is earlier than I expected it to be arriving. This book is a must for researcher and student who work on stem cell research. It's a good reference with the most up-to-date information.

A special feature of this book include the information about iPS cell. It really help me understand what is stem cell and its application. However, the book is not for a beginner in this field. Some aspects in this book require advance knowledge in Cell biology, Immunology as well as Genetics Science. I don't have a very strong background in cell biology at all and I know nothing about immunology and genetics at all. So I have to review those information first in order to understand what it says in the book.

But I give more than 5 stars for this book! ... Read more
