Book Description

Widely viewed as a liberal, Dunstan Mitchell, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Kentucky, has been aggressively pressing his agenda for the Episcopal Church, including ordination of openly gay clergy and the blessing of same-sex marriages. His actions have severely offended the more conservative elements of the Diocese. Mitchell also has some personal habits that his allies in the Church find distasteful, and it soon becomes apparent that he is a liability-one that the church may want to eliminate.

Six weeks later, the bishop's desecrated body is found in the covered swimming pool of one of his archenemies, crusty Circuit Judge James Chancellor. An extensive police and forensic investigation leads to many possible suspects, none of whom are in the least upset that Bishop Mitchell is gone, including his exwife, rival priests, and disgruntled former parishioners. Ambitious prosecutor Ron Gaither soon gets his way, however, and indicts Judge Chancellor, a conviction that will ensure Gaither's political future. The trial becomes a battle of wills between these formidable men that leads to a surprising and disturbing conclusion .

Set against the backdrop of the theological and political turmoil plaguing the modern Episcopal Church, Lest Ye Be Judged is a compelling page-turner that escalates the tension all the way through the final page.

3-0 out of 5 stars Promises more than it delivers
This novel starts out very strong, but the conclusion left me disappointed. On one level this is a terrific book -- indeed, a page turner -- a murder mystery & a searing satire on the Episcopal church. But there are problems with it, especially as a murder mystery.Yes, the revelation of the murderer was a (seeming) shock & yes, the clues were all there. So far, so good. But the murderer's identity was revealed, not through good police work but rather a drunken slip of the tongue. This seemed somewhat anticlimactic, almost incidental. In fact, the detective work seemed to go nowhere. There was a good team of policemen, a female state trooper, & a female medical examiner, & a little help from the NYPD -- but their part of the story just petered out & their efforts seemed ineffectual in the end. There were also a lot of loose ends never tied up.Why was the visit to ECUSA HQ ("815") never followed up on? The relationship between 815 & the murderer was also never explained, yet it was a crucial part of the story. And who assisted 815 in setting up the accused? The reader is just left baffled on so many key points. There is also a graphic gay sex scene that seemed to me totally gratuitous.I do hope this author writes another novel, though. He has lots of potential.

1-0 out of 5 stars yuk!
This book needed an editor ("abject emergency"?) and a fact checker (Henry VIII did not designate himself Defender of the Faith). It is sadistic in tone and sloppy in execution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Causes insomnia
Just got it from Amazon, and read it through in one sitting. It reminded me of Chris Johnson, Anglican Investigator, or perhaps Hayden Konig, but without the laugh track. Some deftly done characterizations, and interesting plot twists, made a lot of things come out as not quite what they seemed at first. As with "The Sixth Sense," when you get to the end, after the shock dissipates, you find yourself looking back to see if the author played fair with the reader. He did!

5-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing, Yet Utterly Compelling
The author of "Lest Ye Be Judged" stares unflinchingly into the soul of the modern day Episcopal Church and reveals the face looking back at him is not unlike the subject of Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray." As a trial attorney for more than 20 years and a lifelong Episcopalian, I expected this book to interest me, but I did not expect it to blow me away. It did on every level. The intrigue created by the complex plot and believable characters set against current gay controversies propels this tale into a legitmate page turner. The author's description of the trial and the wait for the jury's verdict is as realistic, dramatic, and well done as any legal thriller I've read and far better than most. The book vividly portrays scenes of natural beauty and unnatural ugliness which provide a backdrop for a story that twists and turns into an ending you will not guess. This is a fascinatingly original work which is profoundly distrubing, yet real and utterly compelling. Five stars, no question.

5-0 out of 5 stars Move Over John Grisham
What a great read!!This new book grabs you in the first page and doesn't let you go until you close it.Twists and turns, great insight into legal and forensic dealings, and a shocker at the end all give the reader hours of pleasure. The characters are rich and the locations are artfully presented.Whether you are religious or not, you cannot deny that this offering by a new author is NOW and hip and totally gripping.

Don't miss it!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very readable civil war biography
While no expert in this genre,'I've read enough of them to state that this is a very interesting story of quite a memorable character who managed to be in the thick of things throughout the war and it's aftermath. The author's research is impeccable without being tiresome and dense and allows the story to unfold in a very readable way.By using Trimble's own words in his letters, the author reveals a stubborn, passionate and brillant man who was born to lead other men.You wind up caring about this man not only as Confederate General in battle but as a human being, husband and father.A good ,true story well told for the first time ever.Well done! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Hostile, exhausting account of Irish Peace Process
During the negotiations which preceded the peaceful transition to majority rule in South Africa, the ANC leadership were continuously reminded that their struggle had not achieved victory, merely a place at the negotiating table, and therefore they needed to make compromises rather than speeches. The person doing this was Joe Slovo, the only white member of the ANC ruling counsel. As I read this book 800 page book about the Northern Ireland peace process, I felt they need a Joe Slovo or two.
The book centres around David Trimble, the leader of the largest Unionist party, who took great risks in reaching the compromise which became the Good Friday Agreement. He was constantly buffeted by his own community who felt he was being duped by Sinn Fein and bullied or flattered by the UK and Irish governments. His ability to (marginally) survive his parties chaotic decision making process was Houdini-like.This book seems to indicate, however, that the parties to the agreement rarely negotiated face-to-face, rather they stated positions to the governments, who try to broker and barter the deals - actually it has been a sequence of deals. The sheer physical and mental exhaustion of the process is very well conveyed.Whether your view is that Sinn Fein were duplicitous about decommissioning until it was too late to save the agreement or that the Unionists could never really stomach sharing power, it is clear that this process was allowed to continue on the glimmer of hope and beyond the point of any consistency or even logic.Sinn Fein do not emerge well from this account, The SDLP are completely ignored, the DUP are seen as partisan, hypocritical schemers, but perhaps the worst venom is directed at Tony Blair who is seen as claiming consistency and yet facilitates backsliding by Sinn Fein whenever he encounters it.This at a time when he was consciously joining George Bush's coalition of the willing against Terrorism.
I believe Godson's scepticism about Trimble's negotiations and his hostility to the process and players takes up too much of the book.I agree with his analysis of the defects of the prisoner releases, the Patton commission and of the Executive Council, however he sees no real distinction between the Irish Government, the SDLP and Sinn Fein.He cannot see any reason for the Irish hostility to the suspension of the Assembly and ultimately he sees both governments cringing and compromising lest there be a return to violence. He is no more forgiving about Trimble - he disparages his negotiating tactics as ineffective and/or overblown, he says that his lack of personal warmth verges on `political autism' and then claims that his lack of need for human interaction is what allowed him to survive as leader of a divided party for so long!
I started to wonder why Trimble allowed this author such access, when it was plain his views were so critical.I came to the conclusion that there was sometime quite amateurish about the Trimble approach - he is unafraid to be shown `warts and all', sure that he will be vindicated by History. While this may be commendable, I don't think it is effective leadership, you need to make your case consistently and authoritatively, you need to surround yourself with a strong team of committed operators - criticism will come in spades, without having to seek it out. Trimbles approach to party organisation and to influencing/propaganda were haphazard and ineffective, and I think this was to the detriment of his own cause and people.
I found Goodson's 800 pages very tough going. His style is journalistic and it is quite effective at reflecting contemporary moods. There are lapses, as you might expect in so long a work- eg. Brian Keenan, is mentioned first on p 601 without any reference to who he is;theparticipants who are known to be gay (Peter Mandelson and Stephen King) are both described as being `flamboyant'; eventually anyone who agrees with Trimble becomes called a `Trimbelista'.However I do think its length and seriousness did justice to the subject, but its point of view is sceptical/hostile (`Trimblecontra'?) and a better analysis would probably be obtained from Dr. Paul Bew ( a `Timbelista).
I believe History will judge Trimble kindly, I believe that any Unionist leader who negotiated a change of this magnitude risked the wrath of his followers( his predecessor, James Molyneaux , risked no negotiations and achieved nothing);I believe he made the case for `defanging' Sinn Fein and was the only person in the process who could make them decommission - which they did grudgingly and too late to save the Good Friday agreement. He showed that Unionists are capable to contemplating the grand compromise and taking the painful steps this necessitates.

5-0 out of 5 stars How An Idea To Benefit Small Communities Become An Airline
Lytle S. Adams, a descendant of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, clearly saw that smaller communiities were at a substantial disadvantage in the emerging field of airmail. The process of landing and take-off of airplanes was so time-consuming that it limited the number of stops an airplane could make to the larger communities with larger airports.

So he developed a plan to solve the problem, a problem which was similar to the difficulty of bringing electricity to rural areas (solved by the Rural Electric Administration and the cooperatives it spawned), bringing transportation to rural areas (solved by the U.S. Interstate Highway network), bringing television to rural areas (solved by the laying of cable to them).

His plan involved tecnnical ingenuity: the development of a device to hook on to an overhead cable where containers of mail would be be placed, so that mail could be picked up on regularly defined roots without a plane taking the trouble to land to take-off.

His idea gained political backing in the Roosevelt Administration and from the New Deal Democrats in Congress, because it fit in with their strategies to integrate isolated communities into the mainstream of American life.Through Roosevelt's daughter who had married into the DuPont family, he met Richard C. DuPont, an aviation enthusiast, who had the money and the skill to develop Adams' idea into a functioning company called All American Aviation.

The Adams-DuPont relationship had tragic personal overtones, although it was extremely productive in the long run.DuPont did not give Adams the financial rewards he hoped for, added insult to injury by reworking Adams' technology to make it more effective, and ultimately bought him out as the relationship became increasingly bitter and mutually distrustful.

And DuPont's dynamic corporate leadership--he had become head of the corporation at the age of 28-- led him to be offered to take over the U.S. Army's glider program as a special assistant to Army Air Forces Chief Henry H. "Hap" Arnold.

In this position, DuPont was testing one of the new motorless airships, when the craft fell into a spin, his parachute malfunctioned, and he fell to his death at the age of 33.

During World War II, the company's no-landing pickup system hit its peak in utilization, but it failed to make money and relied on governmental subsidies. After World War II, it faced the additional problem of steadily improving highways, which allowed mail to be picked up faster and cheaper without the no-landing pickup system.

With its back to the wall, All-American Aviation was offered a chance to become a passenger airline serving new or under-utilized routes. It leaped at this chance for financial salvation, and evolved over time into Alleheny Airlines and then U.S. Air.

The strengths of this book are many: detailed explanations of technology and technological changes, clear explanations of business strategy and the regulatory system, and concise explanations of both the internal politics of the company and the politics of Congress and the executive branch. This book is a great introduction to the field of airline regulation, a valuable addition to anyone's understanding of Pennsylvania business history, and a compelling case study of the importance and the limits of technological innovation.

The concise nature of the book--and its technological orientation--means that some intriguing political angles go uncovered. The irony of a descendant of rivals of two of 19th Century America's leading Democrats--party founder Thomas Jefferson and and party definer Andrew Jackson--relying on New Deal regulation and Democratic Party allies to start his business goes unmentioned. And the political analysis of the company's large base of Congressional support is matter of fact and unquestioning of motives and rationales.

Virtually no one who reads this book will ever look at the history of American air travel the same way again. This book is an inspiring example for those who seek to solve societal problems through business, and those who seek to grow new businesses from scratch. It offers a clear warning of the dangers--as well as the opportunities--posed by the search for venture capital. ...
