Kane quit the DUP in 1992 in protest at the party's decision to become involved in a talks process which also involved the Irish government , and stepped down from Cookstown council the following year. As the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), the largest single grouping in the 2007 elections to the Northern Ireland Assembly, he was elected First Minister with Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness as deputy First Minister on 8 May 2007. In addition to co-founding the DUP and leading it from 1971 to 2008, he is a founding member and immediate past Moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster. Product Description
A stunning biography of the Nobel Peace Prize- winning politician. David Trimble, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, is one of the unlikeliest and most complicated political leaders of our times. Long reviled by nationalist Ireland and much of mainland opinion as an awkward and flinty loyalist extremist, both his admirers and detractors agree that the Belfast Agreement could not have been made without him. This taciturn ex-Queen's University law lecturer and lover of opera has become the first Unionist leader to enjoy international recognition, being praised by the Nobel Peace Prize committee for his 'great political courage' and regularly visiting the White House. But in the process, he has been excoriated as a traitor by many of his one-time supporters. In this stunning new biography, Dean Godson has been given unique access to the politician and his papers. In addition to conducting over one hundred hours of interviews with Trimble and his wife, Godson has spoken to over three hundred friends, foes and colleagues of the Unionist leader -- including Tony Blair, Bertie Ahern, Mo Mowlam, Peter Mandelson, John Hume, John Major and John Bruton. He has also enjoyed privileged access ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Hostile, exhausting account of Irish Peace Process
During the negotiations which preceded the peaceful transition to majority rule in South Africa, the ANC leadership were continuously reminded that their struggle had not achieved victory, merely a place at the negotiating table, and therefore they needed to make compromises rather than speeches. The person doing this was Joe Slovo, the only white member of the ANC ruling counsel. As I read this book 800 page book about the Northern Ireland peace process, I felt they need a Joe Slovo or two.
The book centres around David Trimble, the leader of the largest Unionist party, who took great risks in reaching the compromise which became the Good Friday Agreement. He was constantly buffeted by his own community who felt he was being duped by Sinn Fein and bullied or flattered by the UK and Irish governments. His ability to (marginally) survive his parties chaotic decision making process was Houdini-like.This book seems to indicate, however, that the parties to the agreement rarely negotiated face-to-face, rather they stated positions to the governments, who try to broker and barter the deals - actually it has been a sequence of deals. The sheer physical and mental exhaustion of the process is very well conveyed.Whether your view is that Sinn Fein were duplicitous about decommissioning until it was too late to save the agreement or that the Unionists could never really stomach sharing power, it is clear that this process was allowed to continue on the glimmer of hope and beyond the point of any consistency or even logic.Sinn Fein do not emerge well from this account, The SDLP are completely ignored, the DUP are seen as partisan, hypocritical schemers, but perhaps the worst venom is directed at Tony Blair who is seen as claiming consistency and yet facilitates backsliding by Sinn Fein whenever he encounters it.This at a time when he was consciously joining George Bush's coalition of the willing against Terrorism.
I believe Godson's scepticism about Trimble's negotiations and his hostility to the process and players takes up too much of the book.I agree with his analysis of the defects of the prisoner releases, the Patton commission and of the Executive Council, however he sees no real distinction between the Irish Government, the SDLP and Sinn Fein.He cannot see any reason for the Irish hostility to the suspension of the Assembly and ultimately he sees both governments cringing and compromising lest there be a return to violence. He is no more forgiving about Trimble - he disparages his negotiating tactics as ineffective and/or overblown, he says that his lack of personal warmth verges on `political autism' and then claims that his lack of need for human interaction is what allowed him to survive as leader of a divided party for so long!
I started to wonder why Trimble allowed this author such access, when it was plain his views were so critical.I came to the conclusion that there was sometime quite amateurish about the Trimble approach - he is unafraid to be shown `warts and all', sure that he will be vindicated by History. While this may be commendable, I don't think it is effective leadership, you need to make your case consistently and authoritatively, you need to surround yourself with a strong team of committed operators - criticism will come in spades, without having to seek it out. Trimbles approach to party organisation and to influencing/propaganda were haphazard and ineffective, and I think this was to the detriment of his own cause and people.
I found Goodson's 800 pages very tough going. His style is journalistic and it is quite effective at reflecting contemporary moods. There are lapses, as you might expect in so long a work- eg. Brian Keenan, is mentioned first on p 601 without any reference to who he is;theparticipants who are known to be gay (Peter Mandelson and Stephen King) are both described as being `flamboyant'; eventually anyone who agrees with Trimble becomes called a `Trimbelista'.However I do think its length and seriousness did justice to the subject, but its point of view is sceptical/hostile (`Trimblecontra'?) and a better analysis would probably be obtained from Dr. Paul Bew ( a `Timbelista).
I believe History will judge Trimble kindly, I believe that any Unionist leader who negotiated a change of this magnitude risked the wrath of his followers( his predecessor, James Molyneaux , risked no negotiations and achieved nothing);I believe he made the case for `defanging' Sinn Fein and was the only person in the process who could make them decommission - which they did grudgingly and too late to save the Good Friday agreement. He showed that Unionists are capable to contemplating the grand compromise and taking the painful steps this necessitates.

Product Description

Widely viewed as a liberal, Dunstan Mitchell, bishop of the EpiscopalDiocese of Central Kentucky, has been aggressively pressing his agendafor the Episcopal Church, including ordination of openly gay clergy and theblessing of same-sex marriages. His actions have severely offended the moreconservative elements of the Diocese. Mitchell also has some personal habitsthat his allies in the Church find distasteful, and it soon becomes apparent thathe is a liability—one that the church may want to eliminate.

Six weeks later, the bishop’s desecrated body is found in the covered swimmingpool of one of his archenemies, crusty Circuit Judge James Chancellor. Anextensive police and forensic investigation leads to many possible suspects, noneof whom are in the least upset that Bishop Mitchell is gone, including his exwife, rival priests, and disgruntled former parishioners. Ambitious prosecutorRon Gaither soon gets his way, however, and indicts Judge Chancellor, aconviction that will ensure Gaither’s political future. The trial becomes a battleof wills between these formidable men that leads to a surprising and disturbingconclusion …

5-0 out of 5 stars Want respite from all the wrangling in the Anglican Communion?
I suggest you read LEST YE BE JUDGED (iUniverse, Inc., 2007) by David C. Trimble.

In it the gay bishop consecrated in 2003 becomes Rt. Rev. Thomas Becker, Bishop of Oregon. The Presiding Bishop becomes Most Rev. Dr. George Bryant, Becker's strong ally. The murder victim is the disgusting Rt. Rev. Dunstan Mitchell, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Kentucky. You'll join almost everyone else in being glad Mitchell is out of the picture soon.

One of the major suspects is a circuit court judge and right-wing curmudgeon who writes scurrilous threats regarding ECUSA on Midwest
Conservative Journal, Drell Descants, TitusOneNine, and StandFirm. The judge uses the moniker KingHenry2(as in "Who will rid me of this
meddlesome priest?")

Most of the other main characters have secrets too. Few smell like a rose.

If LEST YOU BE JUDGED overdraws a few of your friends, it returns the favor for some of your enemies.

Instead of railing at one another here on HoBD, read the book to consign high dudgeon to the strong lawyers for the dramatic trial in Breckenridge, Kentucky. Periodically an anonymous person from 815 will call to orchestrate major turns in the plot, right to the very end of the book.

In the introduction, Trimble speaks of his own bishop, Rt. Rev. Stacy Sauls, Bishop of Lexington:"I have had the honor and pleasure to work with Bishop Sauls on several matters within the church, and am very glad to report that he and my fictional creation, Bishop Dunstan Mitchell, have little or nothing in common."

Trimble is a lawyer.Fortunately he writes this novel with the clarity a jury requires, not with the opacity of a legislator.I delayed several other chores to read it non-stop. I enjoyed the fiction far more than Trimble's own volatile site in conservative blogosphere,

1-0 out of 5 stars I confess...... I didn't finish the book
I heard about the book and wanted to read it.I finally gave up on the library ever getting a copy and bought one myself, thinking I would share it.

The story is amazing. It gripped me from the first pages. But then there was the graphic autopsy.Okay, maybe that was needed that for the story. There are constant sexual (gutter language) references to women's bodies as men lust after them.Didn't like it, seemed out of place in a novel that didn't really need it.But when I hit the very very graphic, explicit sex scene just after the middle of the book, I quit.I don't need those images forever burned into my brain.

This book needs to carry an X rating. No wonder the library doesn't have it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Promises more than it delivers
This novel starts out very strong, but the conclusion left me disappointed. On one level this is a terrific book -- indeed, a page turner -- a murder mystery & a searing satire on the Episcopal church. But there are problems with it, especially as a murder mystery.Yes, the revelation of the murderer was a (seeming) shock & yes, the clues were all there. So far, so good. But the murderer's identity was revealed, not through good police work but rather a drunken slip of the tongue. This seemed somewhat anticlimactic, almost incidental. In fact, the detective work seemed to go nowhere. There was a good team of policemen, a female state trooper, & a female medical examiner, & a little help from the NYPD -- but their part of the story just petered out & their efforts seemed ineffectual in the end. There were also a lot of loose ends never tied up.Why was the visit to ECUSA HQ ("815") never followed up on? The relationship between 815 & the murderer was also never explained, yet it was a crucial part of the story. And who assisted 815 in setting up the accused? The reader is just left baffled on so many key points. There is also a graphic gay sex scene that seemed to me totally gratuitous.I do hope this author writes another novel, though. He has lots of potential.

1-0 out of 5 stars yuk!
This book needed an editor ("abject emergency"?) and a fact checker (Henry VIII did not designate himself Defender of the Faith). It is sadistic in tone and sloppy in execution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Causes insomnia
Just got it from Amazon, and read it through in one sitting. It reminded me of Chris Johnson, Anglican Investigator, or perhaps Hayden Konig, but without the laugh track. Some deftly done characterizations, and interesting plot twists, made a lot of things come out as not quite what they seemed at first. As with "The Sixth Sense," when you get to the end, after the shock dissipates, you find yourself looking back to see if the author played fair with the reader. He did!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good primer on Structured Queries for SQL
This book has short chapters and a lot of examples. It is a good "second" book for an Introductory SQL course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attention Newbies to SQL - - This is your Book!!!
I am currently enrolled in a Database Management (Oracle/SQL) class at Boston College.Right off the bat, I knew I was in trouble when we were told the professor would be unavailable for help and most of students in class were computer science majors. (I was taking the class to broaden my computer skills above and beyond front-end web design.)

The textbook in class was the heinously monstrous 1200+ page Oracle 9i The Complete Reference by Kevin Loney. After struggling through many chapters and finding our professor's teaching style very unhelpful, I decided it was time for another resource.

I checked on Amazon ... and found Sam's Teach Yourself SQL in 10 minutes to be semi-helpful. Then at the Harvard Coop, I stumbled upon it - - A VISUAL INTRODUCTION TO SQL.The problem, I realized, was that I am a visual learner and need to see all the schema tables and step-by step actions to describe what happens as I develop queries. This books is key for any layman, like myself. It walks you through very basic (and more complex) problems in an easy-to-read visual approach. While using SQL on the PC, viewing the tables is difficult and this book helps you map out the problems to figure them out. I was especially impressed after emailing the author about a table question and getting a personalized response.

If you are in a bind to learn SQL on your own, this book is great and won't kill you lugging it around either.

P.S. A great addition I found to this book was a Mac client software (that can access Oracle Databases) called SQL Grinder.Like the book, this program is also very visual and the GUI (MAC) clearly reigns over any PC. Sorry Windows users! Thanks for your help, David Chappell! ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars All the Basics and More
This book doesn't assume that you are familiar with databases or the SQL programming language. It teaches you the programming language step-by-step using a graphic approach.A great way to learn SQL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginners book in SQL
I used this book when I needed to pick up SQL fast.I worked in an organization where I had to build Teradata Data Bases and used SQL to select and move the data. The illustrations really help visualize every aspect of assembling an SQL program and how it interfaces with the data base.I still use it today when I need to be reminded of a particular syntax.Don't loan this book out if you ever want to see it again.I did and now I'm buying another book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY SQL book I recommend for beginners
This is a GREAT book for foundation skills in SQL.

I used this book toteach myself SQL when I was "elected" to implement an Oracledatabase system at a former job and have since gone on to become an Oracledeveloper and DBA.The concepts and techniques learned in this book haveserved me well along the way.I have taught Oracle development in atechnical school, and insisted that they use this book in the classroom. The diagrammatic approach to learning about tables, columns, joins and SQLfunctions seems to "click" with everyone who encounters it.

I'm writing this review after buying my ?10th? copy of this book - don'tloan it out if you need to keep your copy. ... Read more

Isaac Ridgeway Trimble, 1802-1888, was a West Point graduate, engineer, railroader, inventor, international traveler, leader in the Episcopal Church, and, most famously, a soldier. Trimble distinguished himself as a field commander in the fiercest fighting of the Civil War, including the battles at Cross Keys in the Valley Campaign, Second Manassas, and Gettysburg. He earned high praise from the enigmatic Stonewall Jackson, who described Trimble's battlefield leadership as the _most brilliant_ he had witnessed. ... Read more
