Came even faster than all my other orders that I made at the same time. Great service and would recommend this seller to anyone! =) very satisfied.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent info. I learned so much from this book.
There is a lot of factual information in this book I enjoyed it, of course our professor made it even more interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars got it for school
it's good but dry in the reading. it's a required text book for one of my classes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Heavy on Info, Light on Substance
I teach a U.S. History course for a local college and have utilized this textbook in conjunction with more substantive books that provide deeper assessment and critical analysis of historical events. While this text is good for a survey course, I would not recommend it for a history student who wants to delve into a more nuanced and robust analysis of U.S. History. The tone and pace is what one might expect from a textbook, laborious to read and monotone in prose. One nice aspect is the introduction of controversial topics throughout the text. While the book does not provide an expansive background of the more controversial topics, it does provide a satisfactory introduction that can lead to a more in-depth review from other sources of both primary and secondary nature.

3-0 out of 5 stars big, big, big , big, big
I am a high school student who just recieved this book for the year. The teacher claims that it is a college level text book, and after a few nights of reading, i agree with him. This stuff is really hard to read. It reads somewhat similarly to a primary source, very wordy with very long sentences. It is very hard to concentrate while reading, so it is vital to take notes while reading. My class and i agree that 10 pages takes about an hour with notes. And it is hard to take notes out too because it is difficult to pick out the most important information. ... Read more

Despite the high visibility of the United Nations in various peacekeeping operations, the enormous role that it plays in the global arena goes largely unnoticed. This new book focuses on that larger role, bringing to life the evolutionary process of multilateral interaction that is the foundation of the organization, the sometimes heated politics behind its operations, and the key personalities who have shaped it. The authors move from the creation of the UN to the present debates about reform. Their discussion of UN activities - in the areas of human rights, elections, development, disarmament, and peacekeeping - as well as procedures offers an accessible introduction to a complex, critical subject. ... Product Description
With no-holds-barred candor, the former ambassador to the United Nations takes readers behind the scenes at the UN and the U.S. State Department and reveals why his efforts to defend American interests and reform the UN resulted in controversy. He also shows how the U.S. can lead the way to a more realistic global security arrangement for the twenty-first century and identifies the next generation of threats to America.

In this revealing memoir, John Bolton recounts his appointment in 2005 as Ambassador to the United Nations, his headline-making Senate confirmation battle, and his sixteen-month tenure at the United Nations. Bolton offers keen insight into such international crises as North Korea's nuclear test, Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons, the genocide in Darfur, the negotiation that produced the controversial end of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, and more. Chronicling both his successes and frustrations in taking a hard line against weapons-of-mass-destruction proliferators, terrorists, and rogue states such as North Korea and Iran, he also exposes the operational inadequacies that hinder the UN's effectiveness in international diplomacy and its bias against Israel and the United States. At home, he criticizes the bureaucratic inertia in the U.S. State Department that can undermine presidential policy.

This fascinating chronicle of the career of one of America's outstanding statesmen who has fought to preserve American sovereignty and strength at home and abroad now contains a new afterword, "Challenges for the Next President." ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Deeply flawed
A deeply flawed book, about Mr. Boltons struggles within the UN. He does not seem to understand the workings of the UN, nor it's goals. His thinking is a reminder from the XXth century: unusable, nationalistic and uncooperative. It does a disfavour to the good things America did at the United Nations. It is neither objective nor constructive. I can not give more than one star to such content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Treatise on the United Nations
Well written and documented treatise on the United Nations and whether or not we should support their views.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surrender us not an option defending America at the United Nations
this is an exception book which is a factual accounting of the UN and the politics used as deception as a rule rather than an exception to foster our enemies none compliance with the so called rules of International law .
It clearly demonstrates and NAMES the people/countries which us every opportunity to confront the United States at every opportunity except when it is time to PAY for the United Nations bills or provide military personel for the purpose of saving lives of people arround the world.
Having served in the Military for over twenty years and having had the opportunity to see some of the very same political manuavering demonstrated first hand at diplomatic functions- it brought back some very vivid personal experiences with enemies who claim to be friends and allies of the United States of America who deliberatly interfere and create more blockades than assistence in getting anything done .

Outstanding Book ,well written and by a very knowledgeable and tallented brave american statesman with The courage to tell the Truth---Not letting politics smother the facts and truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic read
Well thought out and intellectually honest viewpoints from an author who obviously loves and cares about his country.

5-0 out of 5 stars The United Nations is no friend to the U.S.A...
An inside look at the obstinate, foot dragging bureacracy inside the U.S. State Department from a man, John Bolton, who (in an ideal world) should be some future (smart) President's Secretary of State. He details a failed United Nations organization that has never been more than an optimistic pie-in-the-sky theory (just like its' predecessor "League of Nations" ancestor)that is fraught with corruption as well as systematic animosity for it's United States host and primary benefactor.Bolton is an expert on diplomatic double-speak and maneuvering and recognizes the pathways through the frustrating maze known as the United Nations. This book is an "early warning" on the insidious intent the United Nations would bring to bear upon our Democratic Republic, and our Constitution, if left to United Nations manipulations and devices. ... Product Description

The politics of legitimacy is central to international relations. When states perceive an international organization as legitimate, they defer to it, associate themselves with it, and invoke its symbols. Examining the United Nations Security Council, Ian Hurd demonstrates how legitimacy is created, used, and contested in international relations. The Council's authority depends on its legitimacy, and therefore its legitimation and delegitimation are of the highest importance to states.

Through an examination of the politics of the Security Council, including the Iraq invasion and the negotiating history of the United Nations Charter, Hurd shows that when states use the Council's legitimacy for their own purposes, they reaffirm its stature and find themselves contributing to its authority. Case studies of the Libyan sanctions, peacekeeping efforts, and the symbolic politics of the Council demonstrate how the legitimacy of the Council shapes world politics and how legitimated authority can be transferred from states to international organizations. With authority shared between states and other institutions, the interstate system is not a realm of anarchy. Sovereignty is distributed among institutions that have power because they are perceived as legitimate.

This book's innovative approach to international organizations and international relations theory lends new insight into interactions between sovereign states and the United Nations, and between legitimacy and the exercise of power in international relations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Researched, Well Written, and A Very Good Read Overall.
Many books of this type tend to be longer than they should be, and have a lot of superfluous information that could have been done without. Or sometimes they're too short, and end up whetting your appetite but leave you wanting more. This book is just the right length, beingrelatively concise but providing sufficient detail.

It also does well to tie in the different dimensions of the end-time/ New World Order picture: the One World Government, One World Religion, the UN, the Environmental movement, and other pieces of the puzzle. An interesting and compelling read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Declared From The Beginning

William F. Jasper has marvelously authored a work which confirms, it is joyful to note, God's prophetical view "...declaring the end from the beginning."{Isaiah 46:10, The New King James.}

'Global Tyranny' documents the individuals and organizations, innocent and otherwise, that plot the domination and ultimatecontrol over the multitudes of our planet.

Both famous and unknown leaders, most in support of UN practices, are listed and linked in this incredibly absorbing analysis of this world's destiny with the Anti-Christ of Revelation.

Though the author never directly connects his narrative with Scripture, it is impossible for anyone familiar with prophecy to ignore the adumbrations. This meticulously detailed accounting reveals the progress by a core cadre, primarily featuring socialists and communists, to woo even the most sophisticated of our western political hierarchy to accept a 'New World Order.'

There remain steps to take, should the reader long for a different outcome than the enslavement of our world so clarifingly outlined here. The first move must be to drop-kick the UN outside the borders of America while time remains.

But the publication date of 1992 magnifies the greater depths of encroachment that have surely been stolen by these nefarious schemers. The brief time available for course correction back to the vast open seas of freedom quickly wanes.

Thus, as this new twilight approaches, once again His Holy Writ emerges to comfort.

Though "The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together," and "imagine a vain thing," yet will Our Creator laugh and have even these in derision.*{*Psalm 2:1-5, the previous King James, and the New KJV.}

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be mandatory reading for all Americans
This book will surprise you with its revelations, such as - what do the current and all previous UN Secretary-Generals have in common? All are/were socialists or Marxists (without exception). Here's the straight scoop folks: the UN Charter and the US Constitution are incompatible with each other. Something is going to give. The main difference, as the book points out, is the source of 'rights'. Our Constitution recognizes and protects 'God given' rights. With the UN, rights are not absolute, and subject to any number of provisos. Get this book, read it (it's not too long), and encourage your friends/family to read it too. We needed to get out of the UN 'yesterday'.

Product Description

Making War and Building Peace examines how well United Nations peacekeeping missions work after civil war. Statistically analyzing all civil wars since 1945, the book compares peace processes that had UN involvement to those that didn't. Michael Doyle and Nicholas Sambanis argue that each mission must be designed to fit the conflict, with the right authority and adequate resources. UN missions can be effective by supporting new actors committed to the peace, building governing institutions, and monitoring and policing implementation of peace settlements. But the UN is not good at intervening in ongoing wars. If the conflict is controlled by spoilers or if the parties are not ready to make peace, the UN cannot play an effective enforcement role. It can, however, offer its technical expertise in multidimensional peacekeeping operations that follow enforcement missions undertaken by states or regional organizations such as NATO. Finding that UN missions are most effective in the first few years after the end of war, and that economic development is the best way to decrease the risk of new fighting in the long run, the authors also argue that the UN's role in launching development projects after civil war should be expanded.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of the UN's Attempts at Peace Operations
Professors Michael Doyle and Nick Sambanis have 'tag-teamed' to present an excellent reference work on the UN's attempts at Peace operations. Earlier works have set the scene in an introductory fashion, however this book examines in methodical detail why certain UN peace operations have succeeded and others have not been so successful.

The authors use extensive data and quantitative measures in order to examine every civil war since the end of the Second World War to establish why conflicts occur. I was particularly impressed at the level of statistical analysis employed; especially their concept of the 'Triangle of Peace'to examine such variables as the degree of hostility, local capacities in the country involved in conflict and how international capacities assist in the post-conflict processes.

The data supports the authors' arguments that the UN is not so good at attempting to enter existing conflicts in a bid to try and stop them. The UN seems more suited at provision of various support specialities in rebuilding after the conflict is over. The authors also provide extensive comparison of UN Missions operating under Chapter Seven and Six of the UN Charter. They contend that a UN Mission is successful only when supported with a good mandate and adequate resources. Comparison of the successes (East Timor and Cambodia) are contrasted with not-so-successful ventures such as Somalia, Rwanda and Cyprus.

I recommend this book to the student of UN peace operations, as well as researchers of this topic, as the authors give substantial data and research methodology techniques in their outline of the various case studies contained within. My one dismay in this book is that, even though it was released two years ago, it does not cover the more recent Missions such as Ethiopia-Eritrea and Sudan. An updated edition is hoped for!

In summary, a great referral source; rich in data and references. Good, authorative explanations on UN peace operations with a wealth of detail and additional reading sources cited in the bibliography contained at the back of the book. Well done, Professors Doyle and Sambanis! ... Read more

Product Description

This book examines the relationship between women, gender and the international security agenda, exploring the meaning of security in terms of discourse and practice, as well as the larger goals and strategies of the global women's movement.

Today, many complex global problems are being located within the security logic. From the environment to HIV/AIDS, state and non-state actors have made a practice out of securitizing issues that are not conventionally seen as such. As most prominently demonstrated by the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2001), activists for women's rights have increasingly framed women's rights and gender inequality as security issues in an attempt to gain access to the international security agenda, particularly in the context of the United Nations. This book explores the nature and implications of the use of security language as a political framework for women, tracing and analyzing the organizational dynamics of women's activism in the United Nations system and how women have come to embrace and been impacted by the security framework, globally and locally. The book argues that, from a feminist and human security perspective, efforts to engender the security discourse have had both a broadening and limiting effect, highlighting reasons to be sceptical of securitization as an inherently beneficial strategy.

Four cases studies are used to develop the core themes: (1) the campaign to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325; (2) the strategies utilized by those advocating women's issues in the security arena compared to those advocating for children; (3) the organizational development of the UN Development Fund for Women and how it has come to securitize women; and (4) the activity of the UN Peacebuilding Commission and its challenges in gendering its security approach.

The work will be of interest to students of critical security, gender studies, international organizations and international relations in general.

Natalie Florea Hudson received her PhD in Political Science from the University of Connecticut and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Dayton. She specializes in gender and international relations, human rights, international security studies, and international law and organization.

Product Description

In Act of Creation, Stephen C. Schlesinger tells a pivotal and little-known story of how Secretary of State Edward Stettinius and the new American President, Harry Truman, picked up the pieces of the faltering campaign initiated by Franklin Roosevelt to create a "United Nations." Using secret agents, financial resources, and their unrivaled position of power, they overcame the intrigues of Stalin, the reservations of wartime allies like Winston Churchill, the discontent of smaller states, and a skeptical press corps to found the United Nations. The author reveals how the UN nearly collapsed several times during the conference over questions of which states should have power, who should be admitted, and how authority should be divided among its branches. By shedding new light on leading participants like John Foster Dulles, John F. Kennedy, Adlai Stevenson, Nelson Rockefeller, and E. B White, Act of Creation provides a fascinating tale of twentieth-century history not to be missed.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Birth of the United Nations
This book takes the reader through the San Francisco conference that established the United Nations (UN) and shows how the organization came into being. This is not meant to serve as a history of the UN and it does not take a position on whether it is good or bad. It merely discusses the differences that the nations had in the big power arena and focuses on a couple of the bigger disputes. The decision to add Belarus and Ukraine to the delegation but not Poland is explored as well as what to do with Argentina. The Truman administration inherited a tough war and an even tougher peace. The United Nations framework was built on the Yalta agreements which Truman was not even at.Sttennius and his state department team would be the real victors with the establishment of the UN despite Truman's desire to install a new secretary of state. The book has several areas where the language is unclear and it is hard to follow the authors point but largely it is well done and good analysis. The author knows his subject well and it is an excellent look at how diplomatic history should be done.If you really want to learn about how the UN was started this is the book to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars would you like to go to the back satge of the UN creation?
If your answer to the title of this review is YES, so you should buy this book. I just got it a few days ago and i can't stop reading it. It's amaizing how the author tells all the story behind the creation of the UN. Specially all the effort of FDR to gather some of the most powerful nations in wartime. Schlesinger gives us a good overview of the impetus for and process of creating the UN.There are some interesting, provocative events told in this story, but I finished the book thinking the story could (should) have been more interesting. That said, it was a decent, consistent read--a good case study in "getting to 'yes'".

3-0 out of 5 stars Praise for a corrupt and greedy world-conqueror
What is missing from American readers is an ability to read between the lines, and a state of denial of where this world is heading. Why do Democrats try to portray the need for the UN?They condition us to think the sky will fall without their "international" support.Did you know that America abandoned China, refusing even to sell them weapons, all the while, they were being taken over by the communists who control china today, and were members of the U.N. while the nationalists China were removed from membership.I think the best thing this country could do is leave the U.N.
Read the book "The Insiders:Architects of the New World Order"for a real education.Or "None Dare Call it Conspiracy."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
I enjoyed this book immensely! It kept my interest from the time you learn of Roosevelt's death to Truman's speech at the inauguration of the United Nations. You learn about some of Roosevelt's thoughts on the need for the UN. Most importantly you learn about the true architects of the UN charter. You learn of the people involved and the opposing viewpoints that shaped the language of the charter. It is not a stuffy book nor a read with big words. It is a down to earth, straight forward review of the UN's beginning.I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in world politics. ... Read more

Product Description

Voices of a Nation: A History of Mass Media in the United States presents a cultural interpretation of the history of both traditional and nontraditional media, emphasizing that minority as well as mainstream media have impacted American history. Voices of a Nation sets media history in the context of overall historical events and themes and tries to understand the role of media in a democratic society at varied historical points. Organized chronologically, the text recognizes the significant “voices” of such non-traditional media as suffrage newspapers, ethnic newspapers, and cultural movement papers and magazines.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written and Compiled Book
This was an assigned reading. For the authors, thank god it was required. The book is shallow and poorly constructed.Paragraphs float around in the book with no relevance to a larger meaning or significance.Often information is written without any historical significance or context. The book seems to be merely requoting passages from other, more significant works instead of drawing larger conclusions of the time period.A lot of the information is inaccurate and poorly researched.Indeed, when writing about The New York Herald, the authors don't even both to mention when it was founded.Stay away from this book.I have never read a more difficult and poorly written book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Voices of a Nation as Rather Bland Media History
The grammer and overall literary style is the least of the problems with this text.Overall it is a reflection of the mass media that it portends to be chronicling. Its factual inaccuracies, lack of historical depth, perpensity towards over-simplification, combined with the bad writing allconspire to make this text an example of the inadequacies of the mass mediathat pervades society, while providing very little real understanding ofwhat the media has meant to the development of American society. Understandably, it is one of the few texts to deal with the subject and itdoes make a noble effort at synthesing a great deal of information, buthigher demands of both grammer style and factual accuracy should have beenplaced upon it.As a high school text it may work, but I find it severelylacking in the meat of true historical analysis and understanding of themedia within American society. One would find a much better historicalanalysis of the media in Michael Schudson's "Discovering theNews."Though limited in scope, it provides the historical and socialanalysis that this book is sorely lacking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise, for high school and college students.
Folkerts and Teeters reveal the history of mass media in the United States in an organized, clear and concise manner for all high school and college students.Voices of the Nation takes a good look at all forms of communication, from electronic and print to speaking and persuasion. This up-to-date textbook is a must have for any student of communication or journalism ... Product Description
The end of the Cold War appeared to revitalise the Security Council and offered the prospect of restoring the United Nations to its central role in the maintenance of international peace and security. Between the Gulf War of 1990 and the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the UN Secretariat found itself in the midst of an unprecedented period of activity involving authorised and unauthorised actions leading to the use of force. Ralph Zacklin examines the tensions that developed between the Secretariat and member states, particularly the five permanent members of the Security Council, concerning the process and content of the Council's actions in the Gulf War, Bosnia, Kosovo and the Iraq War as the Secretariat strove to give effect to the fundamental principles of the Charter. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This fully up-dated, third revised edition of Conforti's thought-provoking and challenging textbook, The Law and Practice of the United Nations, provides a comprehensive legal analysis of problems concerning membership, the structure of UN organs, their functions and their acts, taking into consideration the text of the Charter, its historical origins, and, particularly, the practice of the organs. Its main focus is on the practice of the Security Council. In particular the action of the Security Council under Chapter VII has been taken into account. The legal literature on Chapter VII - a literature which has grown enormously in recent times - has also been considered. The fact that the legal aspects of the action or the inaction of the Security Council have been discussed to an unusually large extent by ordinary people at the time of the war against Iraq and even later is worth noting. The importance of the role of the United Nations, and the content of the rules governing it, has become a leitmotiv of all debates on international politics.Consequently, the opinion often held in the past, according to which it was useless to deal with the legal aspects of the United Nations activity, can be considered as obsolete. Through the study and analysis of emerging legal issues of particular relevance to Africa, such as the creation of viable continental institutions capable of promoting unity and security for the peoples of the continent, the effective protection of human rights, the need for accountability for mass killings and massive violations of the rule of law, the promotion of a rule-based democratic culture, the role of African countries in a globalizing world economy and in international trade relations, the Yearbook strives to be responsive to the intellectual needs of African countries in the area of international law, and to the continuing struggle for creating an environment conducive to the rule of law throughout the continent. The Yearbook also provides ready access to the basic documents of African international organizations by regularly publishing the resolutions and decisions of regional and sub-regional organizations as well as the conventions, protocols and declarations adopted by pan-african agencies. ...
