5-0 out of 5 stars Pain-free CSS
Eric Meyer is the acknowledged master of CSS, the new styling mechanism for the Web. His newest book, which completes a CSS book trilogy, reflects this vast experience. On the surface this book is a collection of 13 redesign projects, each illustrating different aspects of CSS layout techniques and HTML. Underneath is a philosophy, a way of thinking, and a collection of ideas. The book makes CSS look relatively easy, when in fact it's not.

The projects illustrate (in full color) how to rework existing designs in CSS, from the simple to the sublime. As you're reading the book, you get the feeling Meyer isn't fighting the medium, he's working with it in almost a Zen-like way. Tables can stay and be styled or go, it doesn't seem to matter to him.

Meyer works within browser bugs and limitations and shows a hack-free path through CSS layout and font styling techniques. Only in the last chapter, where he nearly recreates the layout of the book in CSS, does he resort to voice family hacks to work around browser bugs.

Each of the thirteen projects has the same basic framework. He strips example designs down to pure structural HTML and builds them back up, CSS layer by CSS layer until the design technique is recreated. Everything from hyperlink styles and menu skinning, print style sheets, forms, multicolumn layouts, fixing backgrounds, and recreating the book's own layout in CSS is covered, not an easy task.

Meyer's prose is also easy to take, peppered with pithy quotes and humorous headlines. The net effect feels like you are looking over his shoulder, watching and listening to him redesign web sites that will be "forward compatible" and made to last. Meyer makes learning CSS seem easy. As Jeffrey Zeldman wrote in the foreword, I don't know how he does it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Done
I've read one of Eric Meyer's other books about CSS (Cascading Style Sheets - The Definitive Guide) and loved it for its informative style and still use it occasionally as a reference. His latest book takes a different approach, not a reference book but more one that takes information about CSS and applies it here to real life examples, which makes it much easier for the average CSS author to learn and see how the CSS styles shown relate to what is being done on the site it affects. The book consists of 13 chapters or "projects," ranging from converting an existing page to CSS, to styling a press release or events calendar, to even creating your own online greeting card. There's a companion web site, which lets you download the files to be used with each project.

The book is wonderfully laid-out with lots of gorgeous color drawings and figures, which aid the reader in understanding each change. The step by step instructions are easy to follow and with each CSS code change or addition shown in red, also easy to understand and follow along with. I was amazed at the wide range of effects that can be done using CSS, as shown with each project.

This book is an excellent "tutorial" for those wishing to learn more about CSS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Expected more
After all that I've read about Eric Meyer, I must admit I was left wanting after reading this book. The experience reminded me of certain teachers I had in college: very bright, knew what they were doing, but did not know how to effectively convey their knowledge to others. For instance, his erratic use of varying units of measure within the same CSS rule - usually without explanation - goes against most all professional design convention, making the resulting code both difficult to learn AND difficult to maintain (VERY confusing for subsequent Web technicians needing to modify the work).

Buy the book - but buy it USED. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What an entertaining book...!
My 16-month old daughter loves to turn her head, wave her arms, raise her shoulders, with the colorful animals in this book. Excellent book to teach children body parts, movements and animals. (She surprised us one day by thumping her chest when she saw a gorilla picuture somewhere else.) I also read this book to her classmates in a play group and they all loved it, too. Have fun "bending your knees" with your kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Eric Carle's best!
This is a fantastic book! The large, colorful pictures and the simple, clear text keep children bending and stretching right along with the animals! Still, unlike many of the reviewers who loved this for their one-year-olds, we found that this book didn't work for my active, not very verbal daughter when she was one (even though she sat for other books). We pulled it out again around the time she turned 2 and she LOVED IT. This book was a huge hit. Now at almost 4 it is still one of her favorites. Even if she's tired at bedtime she gets on the floor to do her donkey kicks along with the donkey! My older daughter also reported that this was one of her preschool teacher's favorite storytime books. I would say that for many children this book, despite it's deceptively simple pictures and text, is more appropriate for older children (age 2-4). This is a book I buy all the time for 2nd birthdays - It's always a hit! (especially good for active kids who prefer being "active" listeners!) This is an excellent choice for a book that will last kids for years!

5-0 out of 5 stars A surprise favorite!
OK, I admit it. This book was a gift, and not one I would have bought for my son. I completely failed to see its charm.

That is, until I read it with my one-year-old son!

"From Head to Toe" was an instant hit and the first book that made Jack laugh out loud! He asks for it over and over again, and before too long, he was making the signs along with me as we read. And shortly after that I had to laugh out loud when I saw him "reading" the book to himself, making the signs and saying "I Can Do It!" on each page!

I highly recommend this book for older babies and toddlers. Mamma may not be enchanted at first -- but I'll bet your little one will shwo you just how much fun this book really is! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From Grogg to Artisan
As a young man I paid for my through school by doing concrete work - sidewalks, driveways, paths... etc - At the time I felt concrete had a certain fluid beauty - but that was lost on all my co-workers. Today many years later as a business professional I'd come across Buddy Rhodes web site - and eventually that lead me to this book and building my own countertop. Form Soup to Nuts - this book is it. Design - Mold making - installation - care and finishing. It has it all - in beautiful semi-gloss photos. It's well written and easy to follow. If you're looking to build your own or are simply interested in the design aspect - give this book a browse. My wife even picked it up to look at the beautiful kitchens.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book on Concrete
I love the idea of using concrete in the home, for unusual uses i.e. table tops, counters. I have been looking for a good how-to book, and this book fills the bill. It is well written; nice, clear photography and very helpful step-by-step instructions on how to do it right. They are frank with mistakes they have made, but the projects they have completed make me think they got most of it right.

It is a great book even if you are just interested in seeing how versatile and beautiful concrete can be, written by an architect from San Francisco. Nice, buy it.

Editorial Review

It's almost Christmas and it hasn't snowed yet. As the farmer naps onhis small farm, he dreams of being covered in a gentle blanket of new snow. Then, one by one, he dreams of each of his five animals (aptly named One, Two,Three, Four, and Five) being covered as well. When he awakens, he discovers thatreal snow--not dream snow--has fallen. And "Oh my! Oh my! I almost forgot," thefarmer shouts, and, bundling up, hurries out to his tree (named Tree) with a boxand a sack, looking remarkably familiar in his white beard and red suit. Afterdecorating Tree, the farmer shouts "Merry Christmas to all!" and pushes a buttonfor a surprise Yuletide jingle.

Young fans of Eric Carle's TheVery Quiet Cricket, TheVery Clumsy Click Beetle, and other multisensory books, will delight inpushing the same microchip button the farmer pushes to hear the tinkling, oddlyeerie holiday tune. In an even more unusual departure from standard picturebooks, Carle inserts a clear plastic sheet, covered with snowflakes and a whiteblanket, before each illustration of the dreaming farmer and his animals. Turnthe plastic page to discover what kind of critter lies beneath the snow. Carle'smagnificent collages, as always, are the heart and soul of his books. (Ages 3 to8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST ERIC CARLE EVER!
This is the best Eric Carle ever - at least I think so as does my favorite 6-year old! Mr. Carle's pictures are as bright and shiny as the sparkliest ornaments on a Christmas tree, and the book is full of surprises (none of which will be revealed so as not to spoil the fun). Let's just say they're to be found in the book's ingenious construction.

This unique construction even includes music at the end - a perfect, happy, holiday conclusion. Also, the batteries are replaceable so the book can be enjoyed for many seasons to come as young and old return again and again to the farmer who had a dream.

Thank you, Eric Carle!

5-0 out of 5 stars One, Two, Three, Four and Five Loved it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Blue moon, you see it standing alone
You hear about this sometimes. An artist becomes so famous and influential that they're eventually able to go back to some of their earlier works and (to their mind) improve them. Steven Spielberg did it with "E.T." Singer/songwriters are constantly reinventing their old classics. Eric Carle did it with "Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me". And though I usually object heartily to artistic preferences changing old classics that technically belong to the masses (ya hear that Speilberg???), in Carle's case I'm willing to make an exception. Changing a mildly interesting story into a complicated (but hearty) pseudo pop-up book, Carle has recreated his art the only way an artist should: he has made it better.

Following in the tradition of such children-asking-their-parents-for-the-moon classics as "Many Moons" (highly recommended!), in this simple story a girl asks her father to please get her that large circular piece of rock in the sky. The father complies, hauling out the longest ladder anyone has ever seen and taking it to the tallest mountain in the world. Initially depressed by the fact that the moon is (surprise!) too large to bring to his daughter, the father is eventually comforted by the moon itself. It tells the man that if he just waits for it to wax and wane, it'll become a manageable size in no time. This turns out to be the case and the little girl is delighted when the father hands her the sliver that is the moon to play with.

The book flap says that by reading this book, children will come to realize that, "even a seemingly unreachable goal can actually be attained". I dunno about that. If that's the moral of this story, then I want no part of it. No, the message I received from this tale is that a man will sometimes move heaven and earth to bring his children the things they want the most in the world. They might not always succeed, but if a man were able to get the moon for his daughter, he'd do so.

Carle's illustrations are classic Carle. I'm personally a little lukewarm on him. The pictures here are a little more swirly and paint based than his usual cut paper concoctions. The book flap mentions that for the reissue of this book Carle, "created new illustrations for his original story", so I do not know how much he has changed. If the pictures are lovely, however, they are merely a compliment to the book's real joys. Pages in this story fold out to reveal the enormity of the father's task. A single ladder, once the pages are unfolded, takes over a four page spread. And the moon itself, when at its full capacity, opens up to become larger than the book that holds it. The effect is stunning and enjoyable for those kids that love interactive pictures. Nicest of all is the durability of the paper used for these effects. I'm sure we've all seen the effects a three-year old can wreak on a pop-up book it loves. I took this book, published in 1986, from my local library and the pages STILL work just as well as the day they were made. If that's not sturdiness, I don't know what is.

Should you be scientifically inclined and you object to such notions as a moon being physically smaller when it is but a crescent, avoid this story. If, on the other hand, you enjoy a good fold out pop-up book enlivened by colorful cut-out illustrations as much as the next guy, then I highly recommend this delightful piece of lunar propaganda. It is certain to be beloved of millions of star gazing children worldwide.

5-0 out of 5 stars another beautiful active book from Eric Carle
Author Eric Carle (The Very Lonely Firefly, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Busy Spider) excels in creating books that offer children more than words on a page -- he consistently incorporates additional elements (lights, holes(!), textures) that make the books even more interesting to thirsty little minds.

In this book, a smaller portable version of the original, a girl asks her father for the moon. Fold-out pages complement Carle's unique illustrative style as we discover a looooooong ladder that reaches to the moon and back, and a magnificent four-page center spread revealing the full moon in all its glory.

This fantastic tale for young children is sure to delight parents and kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great dad!
This book is the beautiful story of a dad who goes to all lengths for his daughter - he actually gets the moon for her!
In typical "Carle fashion" this book expands (as the moon appears to do), the pages ascend ever higher (as the moon ascends in the sky). As with Carle's other stories you don't just hear them and see them - you FEEL them. I love the motion in this book. The tenderness of the gift from father to daughter and the representaion of the child's joy in playing with the moon. This story has a wonderful opening, fantastic struggle and beautiful ending. I especially enjoy how the moon itself is a character in the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST HALO BOOK SINCE FALL OF REACH!
I have to admit it: I'm a Halo geek. I read the books, play the game on COM and XBOX, and even check game magazines if they mention it before I buy it. This book far exceeds The Flood. I love The Flood, but since I play and beat the game every day, I waited for this book since I beat it the day after I got it. It's the same author of The Fall of Reach, the prequel to the game. It takes place after you escape from Halo in your Longsword Fighter. There will be more survivors of Halo, more Covenent enemies, and there might be another Spartan that survived. I give this book 5 outta 5 stars. Read it. I guarantee you'll like it and make you read the first book all over again ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeline - What goes where
Here is a quick timeline on where First Strike fits in:
The Fall of Reach >>> HALO [+] >>> The Flood >>>First Strike >>> HALO 2
__________
The Fall of Reach: Planet Reach has fallen and the Human Covenant WAR rages on. This books introduces most of the terms and charachters, so is a must read. sort of "read this first"
__________
HALO (Xbox game): you have to play the game to find out what happens. Believe it or not the game has a very strong storyline to it.
__________
The Flood: Ok, you cannot play the game because you don't have $200 to invest, read all about it in "The Flood". This one tells you what really happens on HALO.
___________
First Strike: After you have played the game or read "The Flood" you would want to know what happens before HALO 2. So "First Strike" fills the gap.
___________
HALO 2 (Xbox game): we will all have to wait and see what HALO 2 has in store for us.
Hope this helps

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
It had all the elements to make up an exciting and believable space opera within the Human-Covenant War storyline and characters. Just as other great sci-fi works, past and present, have done in this same adventurous genre: "Stranger in a Strange Land", "Puppet Masters", "Foundation", "2001", "2010", "Rendezvous with Rama", "Ringworld", all the "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" books, "Advent of the Corps" and others. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book!
Eric Van Lustbader has done a very good job of writing about Jason Bourne. This is an excellent continuation of the Bourne
series.

to escape alive.Bourne goes to his mentor's house(Alex Conklin)

The real villain in this story is a man who heads up Humanistis.
He has a plot to pull off a deadly terrorist act at the Terrorist
summit that is going to be held in Iceland. It becomes a race against time to stop Stephan Spalko.A fast packed action book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please stop trying to immitate Ludlum
what a shame someone wants to cash in on the name - this novel just as the 'covert one' series has nothing of Ludlum in it. the story is so-so, and would perhaps get a 2 star rating, but associating it with Ludlum is just wrong!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth Finishing
Originally excited to be reading a new Bourne novel, I was quickly disappointed in the way Mr. Van Lustbader handled this character created by Robert Ludlum. In fact, I only managed to get half-way through the book before having to put it away. I got increasinlgy tired of the bland characterization of the main people, and the stereotypes of the supporting characters (such as the chauvanistic Director of the CIA). And, sadly, the true identity of Bourne's assassin was very easy to determine. There were too many instances in which, as a reader, I had to suspend my disbelief. I fully enjoy this genre of fiction, and I know it may not always qualify as "good literature," but I expect a little more than this.

Since I didn't finish the entire novel, I don't know how it ends, but as I wasn't enjoying the story, I'm not that upset. I'll just go back and read the original Ludlum Bourne novels, where I actually cared about the characters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Santa's Secrets Applied All Year Long!
Occasionally, a book comes along that presents leadership concepts in a new and exciting way. That's exactly what these authors have done. I was hooked from the introduction and didn't quit reading until I finished the closing thoughts. I still find myself picking it up again and again.

I was impressed by how practical Santa's advice was throughout this book. The ideas can be applied immediately and the book provides plenty of material to keep on giving.

Some people may think, "This is a good idea for the holidays" even though the sub-title hints it's going to be useful all year long. It didn't take many pages to convince me this is isn't just a holiday book -- Santa's secrets apply to every day throughout the whole year. I strongly recommend this book for all types of settings.

Kudos to the authors!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Up-to-Date modern Information on maintaining corals
Wow, what an awesome book. At first I thought it would be just another Coral ID book, but it is A LOT MORE! It's an easy reading text, while providing some good in depth technical meat. The pictures are top notch, and He actually has corals in there that I feel are common or have seen for sale in stores, yet no other book I have ever seen covers them, until now. Eric's experience and knowlegdge is top notch. He provides some really good information based on radical new discoveries as well as more current accepted practices etc.

My advice: this is a must buy for any reef aquarist, both novice and expert. The information is modern and up-to-date. If you don't have time to read all the current information on reef aquariums and coral husbandry online on the Internet, you might want to get this book, as it will give you a nice summary of current information.

First of all, if Martin Moe said it's good, right here on Amazon, that means a lot already. But I didn't see his review before I bought this book, or until I starting writing this. And it really is as great as all the other reviewers say it is. It's definitely not just another catalog of corals. With so much wonderful, easy-reading text to curl up with and enjoy, and so many terrific photographs... It's right up there with "Natural Reef Aquariums" (Tullock), "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" (Fenner), and "Clownfishes" (Wilkerson).

In addition to the taxonomy and identification, the book includes small but helpful sections on husbandry, including feeding, disease/predation, equipment, chemistry, selection, etc.

To balance with at least ONE negative, I would comment that some of the photos seem a little over-saturated, but in fact, that's pretty typical in these books!

My Sincere Thanks to Eric Borneman for a wonderful addition to my aquarist's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Roadmap for Avoiding Psychological Minefields
I'm lucky to have been introduced to this book as a teenager by my father. I've had it on my shelf for reference all these years and never tire of it. I think what I like best about it is the humorous way that people's "games" are displayed. When embroiled in "impossible" relationships, it's always a relief to find the antithesis to the game so that I can quickly disentangle myself from neverending games -- with a clear conscience, knowing that once there's nobody else left to play with, the person will seek help (or new enablers). I've always enjoyed the description of what "T-shirt" people wear -- their slogan. This book, along with "Scripts People Live" is a treasure map for avoiding the minefields of people who might [draw] you in to sick games -- as well as avoiding becoming a prime player in any of them yourself! A must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new way to look at old behavior
This book is Eric Berne's popularization of Transactional Analysis, the approach to understanding and treating realtionship disorders that he largely developed. Whatever its efficacy as a form of therapy, it is a fascinating way to veiw ordinary human interactions. I first read this book more than two decades ago and have gone back to reread portions of it ever since.

While Berne's categorizations of pastimes and games seems somewhat skimpy (after all, behavior is infinitly richer than any theory can easily handle) the basic assumptions of Transactional Analysis provide a new way of understanding much that people do that otherwise seems either meaningless or baffeling. It is a real contribution to understanding ourselves.

My life is not 'game free' but at least I recognize more of the games I play, and am less likely to mistake their arbitrary rules for life and death imperatives.

Definitly worth reading for anyone who values self examination.

Why should this book be included in a list for "aspiring Shakespearian actors"? 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy reading mastery
Glen Neely is one of the foremost Elliott Wave experts on the planet. I've seen his frequent quest lectures on television and radio business channels and in business section editorials.

I think this book makes a great complement to professional trader Larry Connor's "Advanced Trading Strategies." My perspective is that "Mastering Elliott Wave" contains everything one needs at all levels to master Elliott Wave, with clearly drawn pictures, complete computations, and exhaustive detail.

Where "Mastering Elliott Wave" provides the detailed "language" specification, Larry provides the more specific Elliott Wave "code" applications to trade the market. It seems that each book complements the other synergistically. Mastering Elliott Wave provides you with all of the tools, where Larry's book gets you to think more practically about logic and system design variations using the EW tools.

Many strict Elliott Wave tacticians hand draw their charts to get a better feel for market movement and direction. I kept a hand-drawn chart of Silver futures and I was better able to see and even feel the turning points that way, made some money, and it wasn't difficult.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering
This book is actually for those who want to "master" the Elliott wave theory. Though Mr Neeley explains his method from the scratch, you have to spend a great amount of time to understand how to identify the waves and how you should apply the rules and guidelines even if you know the theory. After long hours of studying the book and applying the techniques on the price charts, you will surprisingly find out that your view on the technical analysis and Elliott wave theory changed.

"A large portion of market technicians spend their time trying to manipulate price data to find that "magical" key-indicator. How can a transformation of price data be better than the original data?" says Mr Neeley. If you're in the search of the "magical" key indicator(s), this book is not for you, since there's not even a word about the technical indicators, but when you finish studying the book, you will see that you don't need to look for an indicator.

Since Fibonacci numbers and golden ratio are the most important parts of the wave theory, you have to know how to apply them on the charts. This book is the best one I've ever read about how to apply Fibonacci techniques on a price chart. Not only the price distance, but the time elapsed to form the waves are dependant with the Fibonacci numbers and this book teaches you how to use them.

Author also defines clearly how to apply the Rule of Alternation, Rule of equality and Rule of Complexity. Further you read, you learn how to analyse complex wave structures and what to expect when the waves are advancing to form larger waves.

I have to warn those who want to learn some trading techniques using the Elliott Theory or Neeley Method, since there's nothing in this book about trading, but do not forget that this book is mastering the the Elliott Wave. Do you think you still need a pre-made trading technique after mastering the theory? I don't think so.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart--for serious traders only!
Just about 5 years ago, I began seriously studying the markets. I was heavily influenced by many experts that this thing called Tecnical Analysis was a bunch of BS.

Five years, and thousands of dollars (in profits) later, I can tell you that technical analysis is a crucial tool in dealing with the fundamental uncertainty we traders deal with every day.

Even when I was basing decisions on conventional technical techniques, Elliott Wave Theory seemed like tea-leaf reading. But knowing what I know about the markets, I kept an open mind. I learned how to apply the basic rules, and was amazed at what I saw. There is much more to Elliott than I thought.

Neeley gives a thorough method for applying the Wave theory based strictly on price action. He guides you from analysing individual swings, to grouping them correctly into wave patterns. Once you have a workable count, it is possible to place a low risk, high profit trade on.

The key value in all of this is that you can see a number of possible scenarios. The one problem with Elliott is the issue of alternate counts. I've found that alternate counts often disagree as to the magnitude of a comming move, and less often on the direction, if you are using multiple timeframes.

I've actually worked through most of Neely's rules. I set up a spreadsheet to calculate the retracement levels he indicates in his text. Having said that, Neely omits one crucial bit of info. His method is based on retracement levels. Yet, he never tells you whether to use price levels, or percentages to measure the length of waves. Since he indicates you should use recent data, I've assumed he meant price lengths in dollars (or whateve currency you use).

This is a crucial omission, as price targets are determined by the relationships among waves. Sometimes using price lengths, rather than percentages, renders impossible targets. The only way around this is to use percentages for longer longer time periods, and price lengths for shorter ones. Posner covered this in Applying Elliott Wave Theory Profitably.

One problem is that Neely gives extensive wiggle room in his use of retracements to define patterns. This means his categories, while appearing rigorously objective, actually overlap to a considerable degree. You will often be left with 2 choices for a label, despite applying the rules consistently. That isn't necessarily Neely's fault--he is being realistic. No one ever said the market was easy.

I wouldn't tackle this text if you are unfamilliar with classical technical analysis. Elliott wave can be a frustrating theory. I've gotten headaches trying to count corrective patterns. Despite what Neely says, conventional indicators, candlesticks, and chart patterns can be very helpful when wave counts are not. Classical technicals and Elliott often overlap--suggesting the same conclusion. When they do, then you know you have a potential profit opportunity.

But if you are familiar with classical methods, and you are serious about learning Elliott Wave, then I can recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So, SO Much More Than a Triathlon Training Guidebook
I have been reading Eric Harr's column in The New York Daily News for many months now. I am a very big fan of his, so I decided to pick up his new book, even though I have no aspirations to finish a triathlon. I knew there would still be lots of information in there for me. That's because he always writes for a wide audience; he makes things apply to us all. That's why I love his writing.

I was right.

Triathlon Training in Four Hours a Week is indeed a book any person will benefit from. It has something for everyone, even those who do not want to do a triathlon. For example, it lays out 20 common excuses one might give not to do a triathlon ("not enough time," "too overweight," etc) and then Eric Harr provides compelling solutions to those things...in a way that applies to us all. I love this man.

Eric Harr has a remarkable ability to make it sound it like he just sitting next to you coaching you through this. His book is motivational yet extremely easy to read as well being personal. He has given us a gift by writing this book.

The workouts and the philosophy in the book DO work and not merely because of the dietary guidelines and workout schedules. Eric Harr's philosophy can and will change your life if you take it to heart.

The only problem I have is with the title: Triathlon Training. Of course, it's a great book for that, but this book is so much more than a triathlon book! It's an AMAZING GUIDE!! It's packed with important wit and wisdom about health, nutrition, stretch training, aerobic workouts AND living life to the fullest, bonding more with your friends and family, being more confident and having more fun. I do like the back cover saying "The Transforming Power of Triathlon."

I am buying copies for everyone I know. If they decide to "take the leap" and do a triathlon, great. If not, they will love this amazing guide to living a happier, healthier, fitter, more enriching life.

This is a stellar book and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much More Than Meets the Eye
This book should be titled "Training to Live a Better Life (by Doing a Triathlon)" The author talks about excuses we all give about fitness -- and how to overcome them. He explains how to use exercise to live a better life, rather than simply burn calories. He advises you to view workouts as a golden opportunity to "bond" with those you love every week. He explains how, when you finish your triathlon, mentoring others can be rewarding for you...and for them. He provides inspirational stories about people who did this and how it transformed "much more than their waistline." There is also tons of nuts-and-bolts information in this book, too: how to choose the right running shoe, how to avoid injuries, how to get properly fit on your bike, how to execute the proper swim stroke, how to choose gear without over-spending, how to eat, how to lose fat, etc, etc, etc.

I believe triathlon is going to be taken up by hundreds of thousands of Americans because of this book. And we need that right now. Nice work, Mr. Eric Harr. And thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great 1st Tri manual
I just finished my first triathlon this month, used this book to get me started and keep me motivated. It has different training levels for different people, great workouts and stretches, even advice for what to eat while training. 3-0 out of 5 stars The Very Lonely Firefly
My children (ages 2&4) adore this book. The text is a bit boring, but they look forward to the last page. They also have a tendency to leave it open, and the batteries have been replaced twice in the last 5 months -- (it takes 4 batteries that retail for $2-3 each, and I've only been able to find them at one electronics store). This seems to be too much maintenance for a children's book -- especially given that we enjoy Eric Carle's "no-maintenance" books just as much or more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great First Bedtime Book
I've been sharing this with my daughter since she was about 7 months old. She was a little antsy the first time through, but when we reached the lights she fell in love with the book. It is her favorite of the Eric Carle books (although she really likes sticking her fingers in the holes of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.) My daughter is now 20 months old and asks for this story every night. Her vocabulary is growing with each rereading and she is able to point out most objects (firefly, candle, lantern, dog, cat, flashlight, lights) to me. I am surprised at how much she enjoys it and find this is one book I don't mind reading every night.

The batteries are the only problem. The first set finally died after a year of steady use, and the second set didn't last very long. (I suspect she left the boook open all day.) I am having trouble finding replacements that don't cost more than the book, but the book is so enjoyable I don't mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Lonely Firefly
My children love this book. The flashing lights for fireflies at the end is the icing on the cake! We have been out for the past 4 nights catching fireflies in a jar (and then letting them go) to watch them glow. My boys (ages 3 and 5) love all the Eric Carle books. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Until the early '90s, project management was definitely located somewhere near the unsexy end of the business spectrum. But now, with the rise of downsizing and outsourcing, it has become one of the hot disciplines. Professional membership of the U.S.-based Project Management Institute has quadrupled in the last decade, and Microsoft claimed recently to have over 2 million users worldwide of its project-management software. The reasons for this growth are simple. Project management is about managing "projects," that is, unique pieces of work (as opposed to ongoing operations). Downsizing, outsourcing, and the accelerating pace of change have meant that, increasingly, work is carried out on an ad-hoc, one-off project basis. The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management is designed as an advanced textbook for businesspeople with a grasp of the basics and insufficient time (or inclination) to go back to school to learn more. Written by Eric Verzuh, president of the Versatile Company, a leading project-management consultancy, this is not a heavy academic text.

Like the rest of the Fast Forward series, this book is designed to let the reader extract maximum information in minimum time. There is a strong use of graphics with tables, charts cross-heads, and bullet points. Important passages are flagged in bold and/or emblazoned with the words key concept. When you read it, you realize that there is nothing magical about project management, just the application of careful common sense. The book covers all the basic stuff like planning, time-tabling, quantity and price estimation, resource allocation, and scheduling. But it also acknowledges that there is inevitably a political dimension to every project, no matter how small. So it has important sections on how to ensure that all the stakeholders in the project are kept "on board" and the importance of communication.

As Verzuh states in his introduction, "Every project participant from part-time team member to executive sponsor, becomes more effective once he or she understands the basics of project management." Really, this is a book about management that every manager should read, whether he or she has a project or not. --Alex Benady ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you're MBA-phobic . . .
My background is in law, and I have avoided business-oriented reading for many years. But I was recently promoted to a VP position that involves a lot of project management and didn't know where else to turn.

ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT THIS BOOK IS A GOD-SEND. Well-written, concise, easy to follow, with excellent practical examples. I've learned (and successfully applied) something from every paragraph!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good blend of academic and pragmatic
I read this book as a refresher in my effort to prepare for obtaining the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI). I found this book to be both very thorough in addressing all areas of project management, and very practical and realistic in applying the principles and techniques of project management to real life situations and issues. It addresses all the process areas of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) by applying them to the various phases of projects. The author also properly addresses the needs of project administration by focusing on project management attention, not assuming computer/software tools will automatically give you the right answers.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in improving their grasp of project management concepts and the application of them. It is also a quick and easy read, with good graphic elements in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gives theoretical knowledge only
I ordered two project management books - this one by Verzuh and one called "Fundamentals of Project Management: Developing Core Competencies to Help Outperform the Competition" 2nd edition by James Lewis.

This one by Verzuh described core project managment procedures but lacked many real-world examples of these procedures in action, other than cursory remarks about how some process helped some company.

The book by Lewis was much more practical and seemed to be written from a person who had actually done lots of PM work rather than learned the theory and then wrote a book on it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Standard in EM Procedures
This book is extremely detailed and has great illustrations. I compared this book for many hours to Roberts & Hedges (R&H) 4th ed and this book blows it away. The entire procedure is fully explained (as in both books), but this book shows you numerous different locations and ways of getting the same procedure done. This seems to lack in R&H. Also, the illustrations are great. R&H uses mainly black and white photos from the 1970's/80's where the person was not even using gloves and there is a footnote in every picture to use gloves. I think R&H needs to use new updated pictures if they want to even compete with this book. The increased use of color, great illustrations with key landmarks, numerous charts, and ease of explanation make this book essential in any emergency physician's library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read...
This book is a must read for anyone in business. For the entrepreneur, it can be used as a guide. For the more experienced business person, it can be used as a dose of reality. Having just completed my MBA and writing my thesis on this very topic, I only wish I had read this book 6 months earlier.

The authors provide an excellent framework for growing a business along with relevant case studies. And while it may look like a typical text book, it is less theory than most. This is one to be kept for years to come!

2-0 out of 5 stars Thin on ideas, long on text
After having spent three years working at a pretty disorganized dot.com, I wanted to learn more about the right and wrong ways that young firms grow up. This book presents a fair framework that charts a company's growth, though it assumes that the troubles start when too many orders pour in and sales do not result in profits. (Not the case at a dot.com)

Firms are classified into four stages of development, and the text describes the good and bad of each. Some methodologies are presented for "scoring" the company for an offhand appraisal of its strengths and situation. (Kind of like the CMM scale, I guess)

But the worst part about the book was how tedious it was to read. The author spends hundreds of pages explaining just a few core concepts. The text describes, on and on, what the author is going to say next, then says it, and then reminds you about it for page after page. Just get to the point!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginning CEOs
After 2 successful startups and serving as an executive in three Fortune 500 enterprises, I was doubtful there would be much to learn here. I was surprised to find the book to be rich in insights for both the budding CEO and the experienced enterprise corporate officer. Especially valuable are the maps of where effort needs to be concentrated at various stages of growth and the discussion on the benefits and consequences of different leadership styles. I use the book now to train new corporate leaders. ... Read more
