5-0 out of 5 stars Best GDI+ book available.
This book is easy to read and very practical. It helped me a lot with one of my data charting projects. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take care to get complete source code
The book was useful, but if you download the file of source code that covers all chapters, some examples are missing. At least for the middle chapters, you'll find the missing projects in the smaller downloads that cover only a few chapters. I didn't think of that possibility until chapter 12, so for a lot of the code in earlier chapters I couldn't make the comparisons I wanted to when I needed them. Other than that, if you already know GDI fairly well, you'll be able to burn through the material pretty quickly and pickup a good knowledge of GDI+. If you don't, I think this would be a pretty good place to start. It moves right along without a lot of hand-holding but seems to tell you everything you need to know for basic GDI+ and custom controls.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best GDI+ plus reference
GREAT BOOK! The book was by far the easiest to follow book for GDI+ and Custom Controls using C#. I am very pleased and highly recommend this to all who wish to learn GDI+.

If you are moving up from GDI, you will find that GDI+ is about 50 times slower, but 50 times easier to program. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What else do you need?
This book show us all faces of origami.Origami, it's to fold a sheet of paper, but it's also to fold a napkin,an handkerchief.... The projects are very good explained and not too difficult. I regretted just that the diagrams are yellow light-yellow dark! Mr Kenneway intoduce me to kusudama, pictorial origami, playground folds, pure origami, trouble witt, umbrellas... The book is full of stories , anecdotes followed by examples. We'll loved more examples! In short, an unique book . The autor wrote about bangers, bases, boats, box pleating, butterflies, catalogue folding, chaperaugraphy, chinese tradition, corner fasteners, cross pleating, enveloppe folding, fans, flexagons, flowers, foil, frogs, handkerchiefs folding (banana, bow and mouse), hats, headscarf folding, itajime-shibori (tie-dyeing), kasene-origami (layered paperfolding), kirikomi (incised origami), kites, knots, koi-nobori, laminating paper, lampshades, laundry folding, leaf folding, map folding, modular origami, money folding, multi-piece models, napkin folding (mitre, fan, buffet server), nappy folding, newspaper folding, no-sew cushion covers, noshi, picture frame, puzzles, sembazuru (thousand cranes), small-scale models, sound-producing origami, stars, stretching, ticket folding, tissue folding, triangles, twist folding...

5-0 out of 5 stars A really complete Origami book.
Defining all basic terms and procedures that will be used throughout the book from the very beginning, it is recommended for beginners and for anyone who has already some background in Origami. It is very detailed, choosing a set of symbols (solid arrows, hollow arrows, dotted lines, dashed lines, looped arrows and so on) so that once you learn it, everything else gets easier. A group of procedures is also explained, so that later explanations just refer to these, without explaining everything again. It is really a fine edition, done by someone who really loves Origami, including some Origami traditions, anecdotes, facts and techniques that you will find in yellow windows all over (it is a very cultural book, showing, for example, the different meanings of creasing cards, origin of words and concepts), colorful, beautiful pictures and a lot of projects, of course. Some examples: airplanes, boats, booklet, jack-in-the-box, butterflies, Chinese funerary and celebratory offering, cup, fans, flexagons, flowers, frogs, banana, mouse, hats, antelope, spider, kites, knots, mobiles, multi-piece models, portrait ring and playground folds such as a talking fox for kids. I gave it to an adult Origami fan who does not speak English and she needed little help to begin folding.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is completely horrible.
1- Project pictured on the cover is NOT included.

2- Only a handfully of the projects are true traditionally japanese paper origami.

3- most of the projects are things like:
Making paper hats
Folding a napkin into a mouse
Making a paper cup
Paper knots
Folding a diaper (no i am not making it up)
Making slippers out of newspaper
Paper Fans.

4- The illutrations are abhorrent, many do not include a picture of the finished product or skip steps.

There are far better books out there. If you are looking for a book that is basic, scattered and offers no real knowlegde of orgamini, this is the book for you.

But you if are looking for more projects, to master Japanese origami or for an indepth lesson this is not for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Let¿s make money
The book, The Price Advantage, highlights a topic often neglected by senior management. But a careful execution of some of the ideas of Roegner et al. can have enormous consequences for the bottom line!

I found the book extremely useful in helping our organization structure its thinking around the possibilities in the pricing arena. The material in the first chapter on the effect of a price increase versus cost reduction is not new but certainly worth a reminder.

The categorization of the three levels of price management is particularly useful and practical. In a product segmentation exercise we ran internally in our organization, we were quickly able to identify the appropriate approach to the various segments. In fact, shortly after reading the book, we were able to craft a broad based pricing strategy that thoroughly impressed our senior management and will now be worked out in more details with a view to implementing it in a few months.

Having been through the re-engineering rage of the 90's with some questionable results, it is reassuring to realize that there are methodologies that could still dramatically improve the bottom line. This is particularly relevant for those having to cope with the consequences of ever changing exchange rates.
I have encouraged quite a few managers to read this book and see where the ideas can be put into practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic Approaches a Businessperson Can Use
The Price Advantage makes the case that pricing is the most under-appreciated lever for improving performance in most companies today. The authors put forth an argument that is compelling for business leaders in every company to elevate their view of pricing opportunities in general, and pricing as a key lever for performance management in particular. Most importantly, however, the book provides practical, pragmatic insights into what approaches a businessperson can take to identify and capture pricing opportunities. It brings both the opportunities and potential pitfalls to life through the frequent use of case examples where companies succeeded in "ringing the cash register" through effective pricing or left a great deal of money on the table through poor pricing actions.

Of particular usefulness are chapters on specific topics that a business leader tackling pricing is going to face sooner or later. The chapter on "industry strategy" where the authors lay out some of the tactics for being a price leader or good price follower seems to be fresh writing on these topics ( I have not seen anything written about this before, and I thought it was quite actionable). Also, the chapter on pricing architecture set forth nicely the different ways of structuring price to drive the right customer and reseller behavior, again providing a way to look at the issue that should drive toward results effectively.
The chapter on issues/opportunities that arise from mergers/acquisitions provides distinctive perspectives on how to take advantage of opportunities and/or avoid huge downside risks associated with these events. The price wars chapter provides a guide for many managers to utilize in avoiding counterproductive (often inadvertent) actions across the markets in which they compete. Sidestepping just one of the potholes that the authors describe is likely to save a business great pain. Executing a strategy that weaves its way through the price war minefield discussed is likely to make the business a top performer, and the managers leading such an effort heroes.

The discussion of pricing technology appeared only to scratch the surface, perhaps a necessity due to the rapid innovation underway. While I was left wanting more in this area, the book did provide a way to segment solutions and approaches in this area that should be useful for those exploring the range of options available in today's - or tomorrow's - marketplace.

Finally, as you would expect from the authors' backgrounds, the insights on how to architect an organizational change program provide a framework that should be useful regardless of whether the challenge is a large enterprise or if you're tackling a focused initiative to capture value in a single product line.

Editorial Review

Eric Homberger's The Historical Atlas of New York City shows what can be achieved within a very narrow frame of discussion. With just one city to depict, Homberger explores the rich variety of details in the city's 400-year history with vivid drawings and illustrations as well as beautifully rendered maps. The atlas takes on the geologic history of New York, major eras (Indian, Dutch, and British), and the formative 19th century, as well as the consolidation of Greater New York, neighborhood histories of Coney Island and Greenwich Village, and the Big Apple exploits of 1945 through 1996. But there's room for the small stuff, too, such as the political and cultural role of New York's taverns in the late 1700s. --Stephanie Gold ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars thoroughly enjoyable introduction to the great city
It would be impossible to do justice to the history of New York City in a couple of hundred pages, so approaching this book with realistic expectations is important. With that in mind, this book is a wonderful overview of a fascinating metropolis, beginning with the formation of the land mass and continuing through its inhabitance by the Manahatta, the Dutch, the Brits and the Americans. Key historical eras are covered including the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and many areas of interest are addressed such as immigration, politics, sports, the arts and architecture.

There are many photographs, drawings, charts and maps, and I appreciated that the scales were similar so that a reader can compare various maps easily.

Articles are well-written and graphics are clean and well-designed. I would call this more an historical almanac of NYC, but whatever you call it, it is a fun and interesting read.

4-0 out of 5 stars COLORFUL AND FUN TO READ
Though a few facts are inaccurate here and there, the general look and presentation of this book makes it an absolute pleasure to read through. It's not a page for page heart-stopping, boring narrative of historical facts, but rather a full color 400 year history of the greatest city in the world: New York City! Includes maps, authentic photos, amusing stories and very interesting accounts of the evolution of the region. You will enjoy it.

3-0 out of 5 stars I agree
I agree with Timothy Durkin's December 1999 customer review that this book contains a number of errors and inconsistencies, but my judgment is not as harsh. I also believe a great deal of information that should appear in a historical atlas about the city is inexcusably omitted. However, this is an appealling, informative book and makes for enjoyable reading and reference.

Insofar as positive attributes, the book contains wonderful graphics and color reproductions; is printed on good quality, non-glare paper; and, for a paperback, is well bound. Insofar as flaws, they are both minor and major. Minor flaws consist of editorial oversights such as the misstatement on page 176 that the Broadway musical OKLAHOMA! was written by Rodgers & Hart when it was written by Rodgers & Hammerstein, and the photograph on page 146 reproduced in reverse. (Looking south toward the Flatiron Building, Madison Square Park should be on the left and the World Trade Center Towers should be on the right). Major flaws consist of omission of maps or other graphics pertaining to vanished landmarks such as Jones Wood, an open space on the upper East side once considered as the site for Central Park; Chelsea when it was a country estate; and the Five Points. I had hoped to see maps of large 18th and 19th century upper Manhattan tract holdings; of the boundaries of the Battery before and after Castle Clinton went from island fortification to part of the mainland; of the gradual expansion by landfill of the Manhattan shoreline; and of unique streets and alleys, long vacated. Those, too, are absent.

A conflict is presented by the maps of the DeLancey farms on pages 60-61. On page 60, Division St. is shown to traverse the property, but on page 61 it is absent. According to Burrows & Wallace's GOTHAM, Division St. was the boundary separating the DeLancey and Rutgers estates, hence the derivation of the name [see GOTHAM page 178]. If Burrows & Wallace are correct, the presence of Division St. on page 60 is error.

Finally, although not mentioned by the author, the Dutch house appearing on page 30 reappears in subsequent renditions on pages 56 and 62. The house is readily identifiable by its facade numbering scheme. This may be a minor point, but one, I would have thought, worthy of note. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Researched, easy to read, practical
Mr. Jensen has saved me and other teachers the time of gathering together the latest information about the brain, learning and so much more! He has made all this scholarly research accessible and fun to read. I wish the deadwood at my school would at least read this book but I hope they would also use the great ideas in it, too, for the students' sake!

5-0 out of 5 stars The sine qua non of brain-based learning
Just in four years, you already have a much revised new edition! That reflects the pace of the explosion of brain research studies. The outdated Triune Brain Theory is no longer mentioned. We have: new insights on the dynamic interplay of both nature and nurture; stages of learning that responds to the crucial question of "When has a student learned something?"... For the serious student of neuroscience applied to learning, this is one of the best books. It contains so much interesting, useful and up-to-date information. Just look through the detailed Table of Contents. Rewards, motivation, creativity, meaning-making, discipline... are all seen in a new perspective. It gives a biological basis to respecting individual differences and learning styles. This new edition, with additional drawings, illustrations, outlines, tips and boxes of key ideas, makes the book attractive and easier to read. The author is gifted in integrating a lot of research studies and making them relevant and palatable. He has done a great service to all educators and learners. (The first edition is still worth keeping. It contains useful book recommendations for follow-up and other valid materials that have been left out in the revised edition.)

4-0 out of 5 stars It Rises above the "Fluff" Books
The first thing that struck me was that it was easy to read. The print was readable and the illustrations were helpful. I did also find some grammatical errors as an earlier review said. But mostly it was very specific and practical. The chapters most helpful were on "emotional states" and music. It's hard to find a book on this subject that's across the board, dealing with many different issues and this one addresses nearly every brain-related research issue from nutrition to memory. As a scientist who also works with high school students, I found his translation of brain research into the classroom to be thoughtful, if not enthusiastic. It's a tough subject to translate, but I did get more than I thought I would out of the book. Mostly it helped me get past the hype and get into the real practical meat of the material. The book's far from perfect, but it's the best I've seen so far on this topic. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Fans of Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? will be delighted to see another title in this lilting call and response series. Much like their earlier picture books, Panda Bear features a string of fine feathered (and furry and scaly) friends watching over each other. In this book, however, all the animals are endangered, from a swinging spider monkey to a strutting macaroni penguin (kids will get a kick out of that name!) to a splashing sea lion. Carle’s trademark tissue paper collages will be as familiar--and welcome--as the text ("Whooping Crane, Whooping Crane, what do you see?" "I see a black panther strolling by me."); young readers will quickly get the hang of the rhythm and join right in. The book concludes on a hopeful note, with a dreaming child seeing the ten f! eatured animals "all wild and free--/ that’s what I see!" Martin includes a note on endangered species that may spark concern and interest in older readers--our hope for these disappearing creatures. (Ages 3 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars HOPEFUL AND INFORMATIVE
Wordsmith Bill Martin and artist Eric Carle are an unbeatable team. Much to the joy of parents and young readers this talented duo has joined forces once again - only their third collaboration in 35 years! It was worth the wait.

With "Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What do You See?" children meet ten of the world's endangered animals - a bald eagle soaring , a water buffalo charging, a spider monkey swinging, a green sea turtle swimming, a macaroni penguin strutting, a sea lion splashing, a red wolf sneaking, a whooping crane flying, and a black panther strolling.

Each animal is portrayed in Eric Carle's inimitable eye catching collages, and the book closes with a portrait of a sleeping child dreaming that one day all animals will be wild and free.

An estimable hope; a book to be treasured.

- Gail Cooke

4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite as captivating as Brown, Bear
It's a nice concept and most kids will love the words, different animals and the concept of going from one animal to another. Panda Bear was really written because Brown Bear established such a terrific template. In other words it's a sequel. Like most sequels it doesn't quite measure up.

Kids will still enjoy the colorful pictures, sounds of words and guessing what comes next in the story. Perhaps that's all they need. Sometimes the educational aspect is important and sometimes kids just need entertainment. This is entertaining for little ones and it's a simple enough story so that little ones can start pretending to read and feel more grown up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Companion to a Classic
This book is similar to the original Brown Bear book, with illustrations of panda bear, bald eagle, water buffalo, spider monkey, green sea turtle, macaroni penguin, sea lion, red wolf, whooping crane, black panther, and moon-faced dreaming child.

The illustrations are beautiful--Carle's signature watercolor-collage style. While Brown Bear's illustrations show each animal against stark white backgrounds, Panda Bear's illustrations feature them against bold backgrounds. (Younger toddlers may find the red wolf and the black panther a little scary.)

Although this book doesn't lend itself to teaching basic colors and animal sounds the way that the original does, it is a good way to teach the concept of endangered species to younger children. Overall, a great companion to a classic! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning book
This book is an astonishing document on both the talents of Sebastiao Salgado and the roughness of some of the worst professions in the world. The book was several years in the making and it shows. A lot of credit goes to Aperture for such a quality print. Your first impression will be of astonishment as you browse through the pictures of one of the top photographers of this century. Then, you'll want to read the small booklet that explains what each picture is. One day I hope someone will print a teaching book of photography with as good pictures as these, but with all the detailed information of how the picture was taken (film, camera, lens, exposure, # of photos discarded, date, time of day & latitude, time spent to take the picture, etc). If there's anything to critize in this book is that no technical information is given at all. But that was the point of it. It is an art book, not a didactic one.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic book
I first learned of Salgado from reading "Magnum 50 years at the frontline of photography" Magnum lost a great when he left. For months I removed this book from the shelf of the local Borders and studied it over a cup of coffee. Any photographer could learn a lot from study of this book. I eventually bought the book and I continue to study it about once a week. Salgado's eye for showing people's pride while doing what many would consider distastful is what sets him apart. While I like his later books something about this one touches me deeply

5-0 out of 5 stars Workers: An Archaeology of the Industrial Age
At first glance this book is very intimidating by size. I was overwhelmed by the amount of photos Salgado took of his subjects, which in this book were the workers around the world. As I flipped through each page I began to think of rather than looking at a book of a photographer's work, it seemed as if I was looking at a photo album dedicated to hard laborers. Each photo is extremely vivid and beautifully shot. In addition, each photo gives the impression that Salgado puts thought and emotion before shooting his subjects. This is apparent by the many angles he shot his subjects and more importantly the extreme close-up shots he had. In many of his pictures Salgado appears to capture not just the action of the subject, but the emotion and story as well. You can't help but sympathize for each worker. Furthermore you start to realize how much the world depends on this type of labor in order to move forward. In a sense, this entire book give a view into all the hard work it takes to create all the luxuries we take granted for.

The entire book itself is very high quality. Each picture is printed clearly and at a large scale to show each detail of Salgado's work. It's also neatly organized rather than photos jumbled everywhere. Photos are separated by the location where they are shot. Moreover, aside from the large scale photos in this book which take an entire spread, there are some fold-out pages that contain smaller photos which give it that "photo album" feel.

This book is evidence of how great of a photographer Sebastiao Salgado is. ... Read more

I'm not an MBA and found it confusing and overwhelming. They assume a certain level of knowledge and only offer cookie-cutter frameworks. I found the book Case in Point to be much clearer and more informative. It's Ivy Case Method makes thinking and structuring the cases much easier.

I had a series with slightly less-than brilliant interviews with a couple of US consulting firms after completing my (part-time) MBA last year here (I am a liberal arts undergrad major form an European school). One of the intervievers referred me to the Vault site and this book particularly to help me correct my alleged "firehose" approach to business cases for... my next interviews. To my amazement, it worked. I gladly recommend it to anyone interested in getting into consulting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 10 Unforgettable Pages
I have always loved driving to the zoo on Wednesday when the entrance fee is waived, but I have never loved counting. This is exactly the sentiment my child expressed when I made my first attempts to teach him the single-digit numbers. Of course, such pursuits are hopeless at an early age until the child develops distinct fingers around his or her third birthday. When this happens, however, it is a very good idea to pull your child aside and teach him exactly what it means to live under a decimal numeral system. When that day arrives, be sure to have a book just like this one at hand. Now, when I take my boy to the zoo, he sees the bear and, regardless of quantity, shouts, "One!" fondly. "Two!" for the seals. It's wonderful to watch him grow.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1,2,3 To The Zoo
Teach your children how to "count 1,2.3" while using common animals found at your local zoo. The pictures are very creative and will help the listener have fun grasping the basic numbers 1 through 10.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter has learned her numbers
My 15-month old daughter has learned some of her numbers withthis book. It is her favorite -- the numbers are large and clear, and the graphics are attractive without being too busy or distracting. I have checked this book out at the library so many times that it is time to buy it! Since there are no words, this is an ideal book for parents to flex their creativity and act out animal sounds or motions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Available on Developing for Eclipse
If you own any book about Eclipse, but not this one, you're insane. It is, by far, the best available for plug-in designers and developers.

The style of the book is perfect. It walks you through the creation of a relatively simple, yet extremely thorough plug-in. Along the way, you get a comprehensive summary of how to utilize just about every facility that Eclipse provides. The code examples are explained with illuminating elegance. ("Ureka! Now I understand all of this!") Rich with screenshot examples. A wealth of tips on use of the IDE itself including fresh insight into version 3.0.

Can a person actually have fun with a technical reference? My copy (only a week old) is already ratted, dog-eared, and soiled with coffee stains. Now, I feel like an Eclipse guru. I never write book reviews, but felt compelled to assure my fellow geeks that this one is a solid investment. It is the definitive "Master's Handbook" for the software world's coolest tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for serious Eclipse developers
This is a great book for serious Eclipse developers. I saw these guys speak at an Eclipse gathering in Portland last November, and when I heard they were writing a book I immediately lobbied to be an official reviewer. (I wanted to know what they knew as fast as possible...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Give God the pen!!
Wow! This book is fabulous. I think it's more inspirational than any other Christian book I've ever read. Even if you've already given God control of your life, as I had before I read Eric and Leslie's book, this book is a wonderful reminder of why you gave your life to Him, what your future rewards will be for doing so, and also gives you courage whenever you start to doubt His plan for your life.

The Ludy's often tell us to "give God the pen" and he will write us a beautiful love story. After first-hand experience, I totally agree! But even the most devoted Christians must suffer heartbreak sometimes, and when we do, it is all too tempting to say "God, could you just loan me the pen, just for a minute? I'll just write one thing myself, then I'll give it right back." Eric and Leslie are living proof that God can write a more beautiful page in your love story than you could ever dream of writing yourself. And when you start to get discouraged, remember that everything that happens to you, good and bad, is a part of God's equation for your life, the equation that equals eventual happiness. Hard to remember that sometimes? Don't worry: just buy a copy of "When God Writes Your Love Story", put it next to your Bible on the shelf, and reach for both when times get rough. You won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Christian Book Previews
"The once pimply-faced, tin-grinned teenager named Eric Ludy together with his wife Leslie have written When God Writes Your Love Story to help teenagers understand guy/girl relationships. This husband and wife duo believes teenagers need to know God's view on romance to prevent physical and emotional damage in their lives. "The Ludy's are bestselling authors who travel around the world speaking to groups about Jesus Christ and purity. The authors believe that young people need to develop inward excellence, high standards, faithfulness, courage, and the desire to follow God's will in the area of sexual purity. For example, Leslie tells several stories on how the world is filled with opportunities for so-called 'safe sex' and sexual freedom. She reveals that every time a boyfriend dumped her, she felt that part of her was given away and there was a little less for her future husband, Eric. Practical advice is given to avoid these pit falls and to help develop proper, godly relationships. "This book was extremely interesting. I couldn't put it down, even to go to sleep. It was easy to read and offered humorous and embarrassing moments of both Eric and Leslie, which lightened the subject matter. Every teenager should have the opportunity to read When God Writes Your Love Story. I highly recommend this book!" -- Jessica Loughner, Christian Book Previews.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners and experienced Macromedia users
As an experienced Macromedia-based developer, I was concerned that this book would be too beginner for me. Instead, I found that it filled in many of the weak points in my knowledge.

I can see where someone who is just getting started with Macromedia's products would use this book to begin to build their skills. The examples take you through all of the major bits and pieces of each program without being overwhelming.

For me, the book let me get my feet wet with Freehand, which I don't use (until now), and got me started writing custom behaviors in Flash - something that I can use in my day-to-day development.

This book is NOT for someone looking for the nitty-gritty details of rarely used aspects of Macromedia's product line. Instead, it focuses on demonstrating each of the Studio's major capabilities - a job that it does well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Way to go!
I have not been the type of person to look at computer books of any kind. I have suffered through some really bad ones. When I picked up Web Design with Macromedia Studio MX 2004, I was blown away with the way this book in laid out. I found it to be helpful in everyway. The knowledge this author, Hunley, demonstrates in this field is outstanding. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn the right way to do things.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
All too often, computer books focus on small pieces of code without addressing the integration of various techniques. This book takes you through projects from start to finish. It focuses on real-world tasks. The book is especially helpful if you are familiar with only one or two of the Macromedia Studio MX 2004 programs. For example, I had used Dreamweaver, but not Fireworks. This book demonstrates the linkages between the two programs and how to efficiently utilize them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It is the best book I, as a teacher, have ever been given.
This book has helped our entire staff understand what we need to do, as teachers, to get our students ready to learn. It unlocks many of the mysteries of why we use specific brain-friendly strategies.

I am using several of the strategies in my classroom and also sharing the ideas of why I am using them with my students. They, too, are interested in how the brain works and what they can do to become better learners.

It is exciting stuff and seemingly we are only at the beginning of understanding how to effectively use brain research to better our teaching strategies!

5-0 out of 5 stars An elementary teacher's review of this incredible book
Teaching With The Brain In Mind helped prepare my students for the Stanford Nine. By implementing many of the ideas/suggestions written in the book, I found that my students were better prepared to learn. This book has a wealth of information for teachers and parents. This book has helped me become a better teacher and eventually a better parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for getting basic information
The book is very good for educators who would like to get basic information about the brain-mechanism without getting into too profound details of the terminology or biology, etc. It also provide excellent information for parents-to-be about how to "educate" your child starting from pregnancy. However, if you are looking for practical information in "how to teach brain-compatibly", this would not be what you are looking for. Theory is the footing for this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Thanksgiving book!
This is an excellent resource to teach children the true meaning of Thanksgiving and how much God loves each of his children and has a wonderful plan for all of them. I would definitely recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Addition to Any Thanksgiving Tradition
It is hard to predict how the politically correct police will respond to the publication of this engaging children's book. While the lead character is an Indian (or Native American or whatever p.c. term is in vogue these days) which they generally view positively, he is also a Christian which they generally view negatively. The plot twist that has Squanto embracing the Christian faith should truly ruffle some feathers (so to speak) because faddish dictates say that all religions save Christianity and Judaism are beneficial. Obviously by finding his new faith, he leaves the old one behind.

Well, it's too bad that the censorious elites may go on the warpath over this uplifting true story, because they will miss out on a great read. While Squanto's name is relatively familiar, his biography is penumbral to even many well-educated Americans. His story should be better known because he personified the American Spirit before there was a United States.

Kidnapped as a boy of twelve and taken across the ocean as promising chattel in the slave trade, he was blessed to have been "purchased" by some monks who took pity on him. (In a truly irritating development to the p.c. crowd it is his liberators who are portrayed as religious while his evil captors are not.) The Italian monks strive to return Squanto to his family but the homecoming takes ten years. Sadly that is too late as a plague has wiped out his entire village before his return. The remainder of the story summarizes the famous part of Squanto's life--his mutually salvific interactions with the Pilgrims. Charmingly illustrated this American tale may not be the best for very young children because it deals honestly with depravity of the slave trade although that is a tertiary focus of the story. And though the target audience is much younger, adults will enjoy this salutary narrative of a remarkable life that knew devastating heartbreak and ultimately redemptive joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving
A wonderful and accurate children's book about the first Thanksgiving. In a society where 'primary source documentation' and truth do not seem to matter anymore, this book brings back the factual account of Squanto and God's mighty power and grace. The illustrations are beautiful and the book is short enough so a very young reader will not lose interest. This children's book will be an inspiration to all who read it. Every parent should read this book before their child reads it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book
There is no better book on Astronomy. It's comprehensive, authoritative, and technical, yet completely accessible and fun to read for any novice. It covers every aspect of the Universe and Solar System with the latest information and theories, with thousands of interesting diagrams and pictures that explain things concisely. It also serves as a reference with it's many charts and listings. Every page is crammed with pertinent and fascinating reading; I didn't even realize it was a textbook for 2 days. This is the best 92 dollars I ever spent. (832 pages)

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book
Bought in on sight, compulsively, just couldn't deny myself the pleasure of possessing this piece. It's a book of basic astronomy, nothing terribly technical in it, good for a high-school student. The book is absolutely magnificent: nice paper, clear type, an awful lot of colorful illustrations, all very appropriate, in one word, everything you can wish for in a science book -- it is so beautiful, like a toy, you wanna eat it. If you got a kid, buy it. Actually, if you don't have a kid, buy it anyway, a kid is just a good excuse to spend the money on it; your family will fight over it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good info...but not the real deal.
I'm giving this kit 2 out of 5 stars simply because these type of "child's play" questions constitute, at max, about 40% of the exam. There are two key topics this book virtually ignores that are vital to the CCNA test...Subnetting and Troubleshooting IP Routing Protocols. One must know class B and C subnets and their addressing schemes inside and out. You must be able to troubleshoot connectivity issues for a few routers that are running one of the following...RIP, IGRP, EIGRP or OSPF. Also, the chapters on Frame Relay and IP Access Lists lack depth. All in all this is a good book but the way it is marketed one could easily be misled.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book to Borrow...
The CCNA Flash Card and Exam Practice Pack is just what it's advertised as -- a late-phase add on to ensure all the nitty gritty details necessary for the CCNA are locked into your anxiety-filled mind come test day. While the flash card style is handy for quickly flipping through the information, there is a large amount of information in this book not covered in the CCNA objectives. As someone who took the 801 exam, I can't speak on the usefulness of having a separate INTRO and ICND section in the book... you'll have to determine that for yourself. Simulations on the CD were simplistic, but you can create a practice exam of just simulation questions, allowing you to become very familiar with maneuvering a router and switch, ensuring you have the basics down before you get hit with the real sims. As a late stage supplement to Lammle's Sybex book and CertSim simulations, this book is decent, but nowhere near a primary study guide or proper exam simulation tool.

2-0 out of 5 stars A help or a harm...
Pros:
1. Quick Review at the end of the book is a nice summary

Cons:
1. Questions are not at all similar to the real exam
2. Multiple choice questions would be more effective than fill in the blank questions with no explainations
3. There are many typo's in the sample configurations in the review in the back of the book and if you applied them to the real exam, your answers would be marked wrong or your configurations would simply not work correctly ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful presentation + excellent selection of Paine
This volume is of great value to anyone who's interested in the foundations of this country. Paine was far ahead of his time in so many areas, for example in his vocal criticism of slavery. This country owes a debt to him in the profound impact he had on those who wrote the constitution and declaration of independence. The closing work of this volume, The Age of Reason, was, for its time, a very courageous indictment of the bible. It was written toward the end of Paine's life. There have been many men of courage and conviction, but Paine also had a profound honesty and the gift of a great intellect which allowed to express his ideas clearly.
The binding, cover, and paper of this volume are of the highest quality. The volume is smaller than the typical bestseller hardback, both in length, width, and thickness. But its slenderness is due to high quality of the very thin paper--the book has over 900 pages. I liked its small size because it makes it comfortable to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Paine's natural fire and wit stands out in this collection
This anthology offers a wide survey of Thomas Paine's writings, including the complete series of articles on "The Crisis" and the whole of "Rights of Man" and "Age of Reason." Through these writings, one gains a self-portrait of Paine in all his strengths and weaknesses. Some of his deficiencies stand out markedly in "Age of Reason," where his attempts to discredit what he calls "the stupid texts of the bible" actually highlight his own misunderstanding and the gaps in his education (which was largely self-achieved). His natural wit comes to the fore in his superb Revolutionary War propaganda pieces ridiculing the British generals who were then besieging the colonists. And his extreme bravery and committment to principle appears in his speech, when serving as a delegate to the French Assembly just as the Reign of Terror was beginning, pleading for the life of Louis XVI . Eric Foner has chosen the pieces well and supplies excellent notes, and the volume is up to the usual high typographical and binding standards of the Library of America. Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars The Forgotten Father
Before reading the Collected Writings of Thomas Paine, I understood very little about him. Though his language and vocabulary are a little dated, his deep wisdom and understanding of the human condition shines through remarkably as if he were alive today. If only he were. What would he think of our current state of affairs? The best part of the collection has to be both parts of The Age of Reason. If this isn't required reading in school, it should be. If you've forgotten what it means to be American, then read and re-read this book. ... Read more
