Goes into depth about the intricate culture of the islands

Charming story
This is a charming story about an 11-year old boy in the coastal area of Bangladesh who tries to help take care of his mother and three sisters after his fisherman father died.I found tears coming to my eyes as I empathized with him in his small victories over very real obstacles that would be daunting even for a grownup.It tells us about life in this far away country in a very natural way.The story will appeal to kids everywhere in the 9-12 age group and older, and even to their parents and grandparents, like me. ... Simple truths
It's been a long time since a book has made me cry. This is a very short, easy-to-read, powerful volume. Around the holidays, especially, it is an easy book to pick up and read start-to-finish. At the end, you can't helpbut wonder at the writer's inner strength. Leyla Zana, ayoung woman--awife, a mother, a member of parliament-- becomes an instant"revolutionary". In Turkey, where Kurds are suppressed, and theirculture and history denied, her election to parliament is a freak chanceand unique opportunity to try to make changes. In taking her oath ofoffice, she announces she will do everything in her power for Turks andKurds to live together, in democracy. Her words are her own prisonsentence. Aware of the strength of words, she continues to use them-- withher children, whose birthdays she misses, with her known and unknownsupporters, whose help she needs to internationalize the cause of herpeople. The sincerity and conviction in those words affect the readerdeeply. Questions of human rights, the right to an identity, to a history,to a language and a culture, to roots, to a future--all these are rightsdenied many peoples, still, including the Kurds and Leyla Zana. Herwritings and life are uncomfortable reminders of a battle that has not yetbeen won.

A REMARKABLE BOOK BY A REMARKABLE WOMAN
I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who has the slightest interest in human rights, democracy, and women's issues. It is an emotional book, since one re-lives the extremely difficult life of a courageousfreedom fighter, Leyla Zana through her letters from Prison. She shares herpersonal and political life with the readers. It is amazing how fast shehas developed and matured politically,and her level of commitment to thestruggle of Kurds for self determination is unbelievable. Her dreams andthe sacrifices she makes to realize those dreams, reminded me of NelsonMandela and his struggle in South Africa. I hope that Leyla Zana and theKurdish people will succeed one day in achieving the freedom and selfdetermination that every nation deserves.The book also has excellentforwards by Elena Bonner (The widow of Andre Sakharov) and Betty Williams(Nobel Peace Laureate.I would also recommend another book by her husbandMehdi Zana, "Prison No 5",Eleven years in Turkish jails.United Statesand Turkey have always had a very close relationship with each other, ascitizens of this country we should be able to influence the policy decisionmakers here to make a difference in the lives of Ms Zana and the Kurdishpeople. ... For an RR fan, not bad for a first reader
I can't comment on the educational value of the book, but as a Rescue Rangers fan I can say I like it. It's reasonably drawn, despite thickly drawn lines (targeting the young audience?) Gadget's name is probably a nasty little introduction to silent consonants. ;)

I loved the page where Dale asks about the safety of Gadget's boat (which does indeed look like it's full of leaks!) and Gadget's dismissal of his concerns. Generally, everyone is as in character as they can be in a book like this. Nicely done. ... Read more
