Product Description
Years after peace treaties have been signed and military conflict is nominally over, anti-personnel mines continue to claim innocent lives. This text offers data showing that landmines victimize civilians, in direct contravention of the Geneva convention, and examines the impact landmines have on people, on their communities, and on their outlook and view of life. The report, commissioned by the VVAF, examines the consequences of landmine use on post-conflict reconstruction and development, on refugee movement and resettlement, and on the environment. It also investigates mine clearance and mine awareness, and medical, rehabilitative and psychological costs. Using original research, the report uses case studies from countries including Angola, Mozambique, Cambodia and the former Yugoslavia. Scholarly and accurate analysis combines with people's own words and real personal stories to present a detailed evaluation of the effect of this most potent of weapons. This work is published by the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation and distributed in the UK and Ireland by Oxfam. ... Read more

Product Description
(From the Publisher's Message) iLean s content will provide actual case studies, application examples, and working macros that have proven successful in improving information flow in all types of environments. iLean was arranged in a format that should provide you with enough detailed guidance (step-by-step instructions) to apply a similar-type Lean practice to your work process. Starting with Chapter 3, each chapter begins with a section titled Is this you? which was specifically designed to assist you in determining if that chapter has immediate relevancy to your current work challenges. Subsequently, it is suggested that a formal standard improvement methodology, Six Sigma s Design-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (D-M-A-I-C), Edward Deming s Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) or some other similar methodology be used if a formal structure is required and/or more statistical analysis needs is required. However, many of the concepts and tools presented throughout this book can be implemented by an individual worker and, therefore, will not require a formal process (other than good project management skills). Microsoft s Office suite of products of Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as Open Source applications of vTiger, Google Docs, and Huddle, are referenced throughout this book to provide an overall understanding of how Lean can be used to move information faster and more accurately than ever before. In doing so, you will be able to reduce inter-office dependencies, delays, and errors that may be present in your current business processes. Lean, whether it is implemented in the manufacturing industry which produces a physical product or in the non-good producing service industries such as retail or wholesale trade, finance, banking, healthcare, insurance, entertainment, or hospitality, etc. can be used to improve current ways of doing business. All industries will find value in applying the tools and concepts of Lean in this endeavor. Lean, wherever and whenever it is applied, will improve overall productivity, reduce errors, reduce stress, involve all employees through Total Employee Involvement (TEI), and ultimately improve your bottom line. he following are some general work classifications and some reasons why this book may be of value: 1. High-volume (business) email users on a Desktop, laptop, or hand-held device (with 25+ emails per day) having large numbers of unread emails, often requiring the user to devote time at home to cleanup their email Inbox 2. Office Managers/Office Staff (office with 5+ employees using a common file server) having issues with productivity; errors, accountability, accuracy, and timeliness using email and Excel (Access) in daily activities 3. IT Managers having user issues with poor file sharing practices and proliferation of stored files/documents/images causing storage constraints 4. Accountants/Analysts (sole practice or large corporate) having issues with productivity and lack of standardization of data inputs from clients and frequently using Excel (or Access) in daily activities 5. Executives managing a business in multiple-states or multiple-continents that have poor reporting and visibility of daily performance 6. Front-line employees having to daily process information from reports, CRM programs, databases, etc. and communicate it to the next process with ever-increasing speed and accuracy iLean is meant to assist managers and supervisors to more fully understand the benefits of Lean and how it can provide insightful solutions to day-to-day business issues, as well as serve as an improvement guide for the front-line worker when dealing with data and information flow. This is a must for doing business in the 21st century! ... Read more

Product Description
Note: The Lean Office Assessment is not a booklet, it is an interactive Excel program available on a CD. The Lean Office Assessment was created allowing a departmental work group or individual to continually assess their Lean or continuous improvement initiatives. The Lean Office Assessment is a customizable Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that will provide a baseline from which you can then improve your administrative processes. It also can assist in determining which Lean tools may be of value during a continuous improvement project. The Lean Office Assessment has 10 Lean building block categories that are further divided into 34 sub-categories that are individually scored. All categories are automatically linked to the Overview page which displays a Radar (or Spider) Chart of the total category scores. The score will assist you into allocating the appropriate resources in your Lean project. When conducting the Assessment the work group or individual must relate their database management procedures and Microsoft Office practices to the overall concepts and tools referenced. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Etool for the Office
The Lean Office Assessment is an excellent Excel program allowing for us to efficiently assess our Lean initiatives as related to our administrative processes. We customized the spreadsheet to accommodate some of our unique applications. The Lean Office Assessment has 10 Lean building block categories that are further divided into over 34 sub-categories that are individually scored. The 10 categories are:5S, Quality, Physical Layout, Visual Controls, Standard Work, Continuous Flow, Pull Systems, Leveling, Continuous Improvement, and Training.

We found the Scoring Sheets and Information Sheets very useful when we reviewed each category. We also modified the Information Sheet (which contains a brief explanation of that particular area being assessed).
There are free assessments available, but you get what you pay for.We found this well worth the value. It provided us with a very solid eTool to work with and, most importantly, have it customizable.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding comprehensive Lean Healthcare training set!
I purchased this set directly from TheLeanStore and was surprised that Don Tapping himself answered the questions I had before placing my order.A very professional gentleman!

The books and the CD ROM included in the set are very user friendly. The "Plan - Do - Check - Act" steps become "Assess - Diagnose-Treat - Prevent".All Lean concepts are clearly explained and illustrated with examples, graphics, case studies and ready-to-use forms which greatly facilitate training and implementation.

I particularly liked:
the indicators given as examples on the Balanced Scorecard, the Project Prioritization worksheet, the Basics of Good Teams, the Value Stream Mapping, the Elevator Pitch, the Waste Walk, the Voice of the Customer survey, the 5 S, Leveling and Takt time, the Storyboard or A3 report, the Yokoten worksheet, Applying 5S to your emails... to list just a few of the topics covered in the set!

There is also a long list of healthcare organizations with their websites should you need additional information, a detailed glossary and an index so you can quickly find what you are looking for.

I highly recommend this training set, it is well worth the investment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lean Healthcare Training Par Excellent!
Finally, a comprehensive training program for healthcare. There is nothing close to this on the market, as I have been searching for many years. We have distributed the VSM for Lean Healthcare book to all our directors and supervisors (as it was nice having two of them included with the Training Set), and have begun intensive training with this Training Set to accelerate our improvement projects. The PowerPoint slide's content flows methodically with the book, which allows us to finally follow a standard approach with all the appropriate resources. The amount of activities, case studies, exercises, etc. are beyond our expectations.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Training Package Par Excellence
I was a little hesitant to purchase this due to the cost of $495.00, however, it was well worth every penny. The Training Set is, as advertised, is a complete training program - from conducting an overview with the CEO, CNO, etc. to conducting a Kaizen Event with the front-line, operational staff. The case studies, the simple explanation of the Lean and quality improvement tools, the value stream mapping exercise (which only takes about an hour to conduct), etc. make this the most comprehensive training program on the market. We customized the materials into 2-hour, 4-hour, and 16-hour (Kaizen Event) training segments. We also use The New Lean Healthcare Pocket Guide for all participants, as well as the Value Stream Management for Lean Healthcare book for our directors, managers, and supervisors.Great, comprehensive program for hospitals, clinics, labs, etc. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lean Administration that Works
I found the concepts in this newer version very appropriate to our administrative areas of human resources, finance, customer service, and tech support. We used the case study that is fairly comprehensive as our example on how we too can implement Lean given our reliance on software applications. The main tools are well-defined in simple explanations but then are applied succinctly in the Global Winds case study.Great overview and practical example on how Lean works in today's administrative area. This book is in a league of its own!(Note: The Lean Desktop and Networking Pocket Guide XL also has some great examples on how Lean can be applied in the desktop and networking environment to improve data and information flow.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Defintely, A Must for Lean in Today's Business World
I was wondering how Lean would work as explained in the description. And, I was impressed! Each Lean tool is well-explained, in simple terms, and then it is related in an actual business case study.I liked the flow of the case as it follows the book exactly. One can tell that this method of Lean application in an office paper-based or electronic document environment, works.Excellent!I also recently purchased The Lean Desktop and Networking Pocket Guide XL and was also impressed with all the case studies in how Lean can be applied to information and data flow using MS Office and other open source apps.Lean is finally being published for the 21st century!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lean Office Concepts Apply to Service
I found this book to have an impact on our service-related improvement projects. All the lean tools apply and the case study at the end of each chapter is a great addition to this book. All the lean tools are applied in an actual business case study using MS Office and other apps. This is the most comprehensive case study I have seen ( I purchase nearly every Lean or Six Sigma service related book).I liked the simplicity of the explanations and examples for the tools and concepts.Lean, for the most part, is simply an application of a common-sense approach to an issue or problem and this book follows that concept.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lean for Information Flow..Good, Solid Business Case Study
I really liked the application of the tools explained in this book on how they applied to the actual business case study that was explained at the end of each chapter.Simple and to-the-point. This book brings Lean into the 21st century. Also, The Lean Destkop and Networking Pocket Guide XL has numerous other case studies that relate to how Lean works within MS Office and other apps. Well-done authors!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Ways to Learn Lean in the Office
I found this book to break down the implementation of Lean in administrative areas very helpful. The concepts of takt time, pitch, standard work, error-proofing, predictable output, leveling, etc. are explained in relatively simple terms that all levels of the organization can relate to.The example of the Global Winds case study at the end of each chapter certainly brings the concepts into the 21st century. The various topics of the book are conveyed through this detailed case study in how the concepts apply when using MS Office and other apps.Great book for companies that still struggle with paperwork as well as those striving to go paperless. ... Product Description
(Please see the newer version entitled The New Lean Healthcare Pocket Guide XL.) The Lean Healthcare Pocket Guide XL is a collection of Lean tool examples and definitions from healthcare professionals and Lean sensei. It provides easy-to-use and easy-to-understand tools, methods, and concepts based on the world-class Toyota Motor Company. These practices are commonly referred to as Lean. The Lean Healthcare Pocket Guide XL is designed for use as a convenient and quick reference as you learn and implement the Lean tools as they apply to those challenging situations in healthcare. You can put your finger on any tool within a matter of seconds! Find the right tool for the right Lean initiative by using either the Table of Contents or the Lean Healthcare Tool Usage Matrix. A Table of Contents offers an alphabetical list of tools, techniques, and supporting information. The Lean Healthcare Tool Usage Matrix organizes the Lean tools and concepts relative to three important broad Lean philosophies. The philosophies are: Stabilize - It is critical that excess movement of work and variation of process be removed first. It is difficult to apply Lean when variation exists. Standardize - Once an area or a process has been stabilized, formal standards via work rules, charts, and visual controls must be used to further eliminate variation. Simplify - As an organization stabilizes and standardizes processes, it must level the work loads among staff to ensure effective and efficient service is provided to the patient or other healthcare provider. As you continue with the implementation of Lean initiatives throughout this pocket guide, assess, treat, diagnosis, and prevent will be the overriding themes. The following topics are covered: 5S, Continuous Flow, Cycle Time, Document Tagging, Error Proofing, Goals and Outcomes, Goal Card, Healthcare Case for Lean, Interruptions and Random Arrivals, Just-In-Time,Kaizen Events ,Kanbans for Supplies, Leveling, Measurement Techniques, Paper File System, Physical Layout, Pitch, Predictable Outcome, Problem Solving, Pull Systems, Reporting and Communications, Resistance to Change, Runners, Six Sigma, Standard Work, Takt Time, Value Stream Mapping, Visual Controls, Waste, and Work Load Balancing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Required for Our Lean Management Class
Our organization distributes this booklet to all who are receiving Lean Management/Lean Green Belt training - that's 350 people so far.We find it concise enough to be handy, and detailed enough to be useful. The larger format is excellent for reviewing, although we also like the pocket version for portability. This is a fine resource for those who have had some training and need a quick reminder about the tools and concepts of lean in healthcare.

Product Description
The 5S Desktop (PC) Pocket Handbook is a step-by-step guide for the implementation of 5S to all your electronic files. The XP version of Windows Explorer and the Office 2003 software suite were the versions used in creating this handbook. This handbook is designed to be: 1. An implementation guide. This handbook steps you through each phase of the 5S process. Examples are shown to assist you in this process. No two file systems (Desktops) are the same; therefore, use the examples as a guide when you apply that phase or step to your Desktop. 2. A Lean beginning. 5S is a fundamental Lean tool and is considered the foundation for additional Lean tool application. Once 5S has been implemented and results have been obtained, there will be a need to integrate more Lean tools into your Desktop environment. 3. A spark for the department. Once everyone understands the basic premise of Lean and 5S, then that understanding can serve as a catalyst for a more comprehensive application of Lean tools. (iLean and Lean Office Demystified II are available books on how additional Lean tools can be applied to your Desktop environment.) 4. A bridge for improved performance. It is often stated that the average person at work today has nearly 80 emails to deal with on a daily basis. This, along with the other application files, can at times be overwhelming for the individual. Using 5S for organizing your emails, as well as the other application files, will greatly assist in managing this barrage of information. Implementing 5S to your files and folders will allow for a more stress-free workplace. Each chapter or section will have the following areas: Brief description on the purpose of each 5S step This part of the chapter will provide an overview of the content. It will allow you to gain a perspective on how this particular topic will relate to the Lean (and 5S) concept relative to improvement opportunities in your Desktop environment. How this tool can be implemented Comprehensive instructions will be provided; giving you a guide to implement each step of the 5S process. Windows Explorer A specific step-by-step approach will demonstrate the application of each phase of the 5S process relative to the Windows Explorer environment. Screen shots and selections will be provided for you to follow along on your computer if you so desire. Microsoft Outlook A specific step-by-step approach will demonstrate the application of each phase of the 5S process relative to the Microsoft Outlook environment. Screen shots and selections will be provided for you to follow along on your computer if you so desire. Key Points Additional information will be provided to further assist you with the nuances that comprise each Desktop environment. ... Read more

Product Description
The 5S for the Office User s Guide provides an organization with the forms, worksheets, and checklists necessary to ensure a 5S project is well-planned from the start - as well as ensuring the program is sustained over time. This how-to guide should be used as it is titled - as a Guide . The information contained in this workbook should supplement, support, and enhance, etc. current materials that an organization may currently be using.Throughout The 5S for the Office User s Guide there will be various quotations, performance points, references to PC file storage (the IT case study in the appendix) etc. to further invoke the overall need to do 5S in all types of administrative settings. As organizations automate more administrative functions (i.e., becoming more paperless) then there must exist that same type of organization and standardization for a physical file system as well as the computer file system. It is the focus of this User s Guide to have the 5S principles apply to both the physical desktop (paperwork, desk layout, drawer organization, etc.) and the PC desktop (folders, files, emails, shortcuts, etc.).No workbook or guide can take the place of a person s enthusiasm and passion to improve. However, what this guide can do is provide a good, solid foundation on what is required to effectively implement 5S in administrative settings while also spearheading efforts to bring those principles to the PC.The topics included in The 5S for the Office User s Guide include: Lean Overview, Lean and Six Sigma, 5S, Getting Started, Ensure Management Commitment, Identify Target Areas, Form an Implementation Team, Select Project Measures and Collect Baseline Data, Photograph Current Conditions , Apply the 5S Scan Checklist , Post a Project Storyboard, First S: Sort Through and Sort Out, Criteria for Sort, Prepare a Holding Area, Develop and Implement Plan for Sort, Second S: Set-In-Order and Set Limits, Draw Area Map and Flow Diagram of Current State, Draw Area Map and Flow Diagram of Future State , Develop and Implement Plan for Set-In-Order, Third S: Shine and Inspect Through Cleaning, Determine Criteria and Guidelines for Cleaning, Develop and Implement Plan for Shine, Fourth S: Standardize and Share Information, Design and Implement Visual Controls, Communicate Through Yokotens, and Implement Plan for Standardize, Fifth S: Sustain the Gains, Train Everyone to Sustain, Develop and Implement Plan for Sustain, Continue to Improve, Waste Audit, IT Case Study (PC File System), Glossary, and Notes/Worksheets Each step provides the following: Purpose: A brief introduction to what must be attained. Who Does It?: Helps identify who should mainly be responsible for this step. Time Frame: Helps establish a general time period on how long it should take to complete each step. Procedures: Helps detail the steps of implementation. Sets the sequence in which the forms and worksheets are to be used. Worksheets and Forms: Lists worksheets, checklists, and forms as a guide to monitor progress. Starter Tips: Provides valuable information from Lean sensei regarding implementation of these steps.Words to Succeed: Quotes from various people that relate to the particular topic. Performance Strategy: Short sentences summarizing page topics. Key Icons: Denotes each of the 5S s. Post-it Notes: Area for you to write down ideas. The 5S for the Office User s Guide has concise explanations of 5S concepts and tools that have been used successfully in every type of administrative setting.
