Woodrow Wilson and the League of Nations
This book is about Woodrow Wilson's quest for a new world order during and after WW I, especially his strong desire for the creation of a League of Nations which would mediate all future disputes between nations. The U.S. Senate, of course, voted it down. I found it interesting how the country (and Wilson) had strong socialist leanings, especially in international affairs, until War was declared in 1916, when a huge reaction took effect. Knock does a good job relating events and portraying Wilson as one whose ideas for truly ending warfare was convincing to world leaders but not his own country. The effort of trying to persuade his countrymen of the importance of a League probably broke his health and led to his death. Recommended.

Meticulous study on the League of Nations
When I was very young, I read somewhere that Wilson was the greatest swindler in human history. And Wilson has always been a mistery to me. Reading this book, I expected to learn the reason why Woodrow Wilson decided to lead America into World War I. But it was not a main theme of this book. And the explanation about it was not satisfactory to me. My misunderstanding about Wilson, however, is removed now thanks to this book.
Thomas J. Knox decidedly focused on the League issue. He meticulously studied the process of the formation of League of Nations. And his analysis of American political spectrum of that era - especially progressive internationalism & conservative internationalism - was excellent. It was very helpful in studying American history.

A Good Analysis of President Wilson's Views
To End All Wars attempts to show where President Wilson's ideas on the League of Nations came from and why he ultimatly failed.A fascinating protryal of early 20th century poltics, Knock successfully intergrates both the domestic policies of Wilson with his international policies.The links between the progressive, pacifist leagues and Wilson's views are clearly marked and appear credible.What is not examined is the moral conflict between Wilson's anti-war views and the fact he lead the country into World War I.Further research into this inconsitency could have led insight into why Wilson treated his former progrssive allies with such contempt as the war progressed.The ultimate result was his political inability to convince the American people to join the League of Nations after he alientated his greatest supporters.

The Lost Peace
Bailey explicitly states in his bibliographic essay that he has created a work of synthesis rather than a work of original research. This synthesis, however, is a wonderful work of history. Bailey excellently covers the movements of the post-World War I peace effort without spending too much time going back and forth between the armistice and the war or pre-war days. As such, this book reads very easily because the flow is very simple.

Bailey's writing style also makes undertaking a daunting task relatively facile. Bailey's topic may be relative to World War I but it is not a military history but rather, more along the lines of a political or even social history. He includes details about diplomatic efforts undertaken at the end of World War I and also covers issues relative to propagating the armistice in the United States. At the very least, the cartoons stand as period pieces that speak volumes about the life and culture of early twentieth century.

Those of you who have read Bailey's work before know that he writes in an intelligent and sophisticated manner but one need not be a college level wordsmith to fully comprehend or follow his work. Because this is a synthesis, this may not be a comprehensive study of everything that happened between 1911 and 1920. However, this is a great place to start. Think of this as a building block on which you might build an understanding of the world at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Wilson: The failed Diplomat
Bailey has written an excellent book.It demonstrates the reasons why Wilson's attempt to create a lasting peace failed, and then the author gives quality support that not only supports his view, but knocks downopposition to his standpoint.He also includes political cartoons fromnewpapers that allow you to see public opinion and they support his ownopinion.I enjoyed the book for these reasons and because the way it waswritten helped me to remember what I had read.I would especially recomendthis book to any student studying American History.Bailey's writing isclear and concise and willbe an eye opener. ... Readable, Informative, Solid
This is a solid look at President Wilson and the failure of the Versailles Treaty in the U.S. Senate.Bailey examines Wilson's vision, his 14 points, and most importantly, his destructive rigidity and self-righteousness.¨The Senate will take its medicine,¨ Wilson said about Senate passage after signing the Treaty in June, 1919.That line alone speaks volumes, given Senate opposition from the irreconcilibles (led by Bob La Follette), Henry Cabot Lodge, and perhaps most importantly, the nation's weariness for foreign adventure.The author also examines the effects of Wilson's stroke, when the ever-inflexible President deferred to his wife and probably should have resigned.All in all, readers come away with a firm understanding as to why the Versailles Treaty failed in the Senate, which many believe led to future disaster.

Historian Thomas A Bailey (1902-1983) has given us a very good, and surprisingly readable look at one of history's great IFs - What IF the U.S. had entered the League of Nations.

superbly written history
It's a shame this book is out of print because it's absolutely superb. It's a history book that is fast paced, written with all the drama of a novel and even has an elment of supsense. Great Betrayal tells the story of how the League of Nations treaty fell apart. It brings all the players from the proud and inflexible Woodrow Wilson, to Henry Cabot Lodge and Lord Grey. And it includes includes comments from editorial pages from around the country and Europe at the time. Woodrow Wilson was an extremely difficult man and particularly after his illness (the book makes it clear that Wilson should've resigned) he may have been one of the prime reasons why the treaty failed. I really enjoyed this fascinating look into a piece of our country's history that still affects us to this day. ... Read more
