I enjoy collecting and reading field theory books.Prof. Low's book is very handsome on the outside, and the chapters appear to be enticing on first sight:Electrostatics, Steady Currents and Magnetostatics, Time-Dependent Fields and Currents, Radiation by Prescribed Sources, Scattering, Invariance and Special Relativity, Lagrangian Field Theory, and Gravity.But, with the exception of very, very gifted physics Ph.D. students and authors who've written on this subject, almost everyone will find the book way too difficult to comprehend.Most of the integrals do not specify limits or coordinate systems, and most of the tensor equations don't specify the indices--Prof. Low assumes that the reader can simply figure them out!There are no solved problems, no applications, and the exercises are--for the most part--mini-research projects!Prof. Low says in the Preface that his book is a textbook rather than a treatise, but it sure reads like a treatise.Most students and graduates would be better off studying the Schaum's Outline 2000 Solved Problems in Electromagnetics.

Difficult to understand, very few examples, and the problems aren't very good at telling you what they are asking for. Maybe good if you already have a decent understanding of E&M, but this is not an appropriate text for a first graduate level class. Use Jackson for most stuff, fill in the gaps of what you missed as an undergraduate with Griffiths, and use Barut for the field theory stuff.

Francis Low is an outstanding theoretical physicist who also happens to have an interest in education. He wrote marvellous lectures on quantum scattering, where the misteries of the so-called Sommerfeld radiation condition were clarified (and derived!) by using wave-packets. His name in science was mademainly by the epoch-making paper, with Gell-Mann, which introduced the now ubiquitous renormalization group. It is noble of him to dedicate some of his time to write his vision of electrodynamics and gravitation, as examples of classical field theory. This is an advanced book, meant to deepen and unify concepts. But Francis Low would'nt stop at that. You'll find fresh views almost at every page, mainly on the electrodynamics part, his turf. Some criticism has been made, by Robert Wald, for instance, about his treatment of gravitation, which is more or less alla Feynman, or alla Schwinger: geometry is discovered. It is not the starting point, like in Einstein. This is also welcome: it puts your mind to work along different tracks. All in all, a great reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars A solid, but somewhat limited, introduction to electromagnetism
This is a solid, no-frills textbook for an upper-level undergraduate Electricity and magnetism course. It covers pretty much all of the standard Electromagnetic theory, and provides the reader with some of the most basic results. The worked examples are strewn throughout the textbook, and they help the reader absorb the material. The exercises at the ends of the chapters are also an integral part of the text, and as in any other Physics textbook they are the essential part of learning the subject matter. However, neither the examples in the chapters nor the exercises at the ends, with very few exceptions, are all that advanced. The modern understanding of electromagnetism is squarely founded on Maxwell's Equations. These are first order, coupled, vector partial differential equations in three-dimensional space, in addition to the time dependence. They very complicated equations, and their solutions are hard to find except in some very special circumstances. By reading this book you would not get this impression. Most of the problems don't take more than a line or two of calculation. Students may like this, but a course based on this textbook is definitely not preparing them will in terms of fully appreciating the complexities of the Electromagnetic theory. A far better textbook, and the one that is most admired, is David Griffiths' Introduction to Electrodynamics (3rd Edition). That book is THE standard electromagnetic textbook, and considering the price a much better deal as well. If you have any sway with the instructor of the Electrodynamics course that you are going to take, and he or she is considering using this textbook, I would recommend that you try to dissuade him/her from it. You will do yourself a great favor.

Not a bad text to learn the basics of E&M out of but there are better texts out there.Jackson is way too hard to study as a first book on the subject but Good I think is a little on the too easy side.Not that it should be hard to read and work through a book if you are somewhat intelligent, but Good could get a little more advanced toward the end of each chapter than he does and add some advanced problems at the end of each chapter.

It's really not a bad first text to read but I wouldn't recommend an undergrad institution use it for their E&M courses because there is a LARGE gap between Good and Jackson.

If this was a Dover book that was cheaper, softcover, and not meant to be an undergrad text I might rate it higher but since it is meant to be an undergrad text I think it comes up a little short.

This text accomplishes what it sets out to do - to provide an interesting, informative, and complete intro to E&M.It manages to convey not only the substance of E&M, but also it's elegance and versatility, giving many creative applications of the subject matter.This provides the student with solid physical intuition and inspires ingenuity.A good choice for a first book or a second book after the APs.

Good's book is an excellent reference for a first course in classical electromagnetism. It covers all the basics, and hits Maxwell's equations rather early, which is a nice touch. The sections on relativity are especially useful. My only complaint is that this book shys away from thehard examples. I would have found it much more helpfull if the book couldhave covered at least one advanced example per chapter. All in all a Goodbook. In fact my professor makes so many references to the "Good"book, that sometimes it feels like I'm at sunday mass. ... Read more

Wang and Taratorin present the best technical overview of magnetic recording I have seen to date.What I found especially valuable is the extensive discussion of both the characteristics and measurement of theprincipal non-linearities impacting magnetic recording. These include suchthings as non-linear transition shift, hard-easy transition shift, MRassymetries, and self erasure.The books focus is on therecording/playback processes, but also includes a reasonable introductionto coding and partial response channel design.For readers who want moredetails on the codes used historically, Mee and Daniel's works are better. ... This is a fine and and carefully written book, now in its second edition. Formulas, calculations, and figures say more than words, and there are quite a few of them here. Full solutions to odd numbered exercises take up more than 170 pages. The emphasis in on particles and fields, and relativity; electromagnetism in matter plays a smaller role. Relativity is done with ict for the fourth component of an event vector, which is a bit old fashioned perhaps. There are few misprints. Recommended to advanced undergraduates or graduate students.

Physics 212 (Modern Physics) is a required course for Aerospace Engineering Students at KFUPM University in Saudi Arabia. I bought this book instead of Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) as it was out of print when I needed to buy it. Only 107 out of 527 pages of this book, which I bought, covers the chapters related to modern physics. Schaum's outline Beginning physics II: waves, electromagnetism, optics, and modern physics explains modern physics concepts very well indeed.More importantly, it solves problems clearly. Moreover, it helped me a lot in doing my homeworks problems quickly. Finally, it has a lot of solved problems of different ideas that I did not find in the textbook I used for this course, which was Modern Physics (ISBN 0030015472).

I strongly believe that you can make use of this book not only in your modern physics, but also in freshman physics courses as it covers topics such as waves and electromagnetism, which I had already studied in my freshman year physics courses. So, this book could be helpful for you inmore than two physics courses and, in that case, you will hit two birds with one stone if you buy this book. In addition, it is possible that you find Schaum's Outline of Modern Physics (ISBN 0070248303) to be not good. Then, in that event, you know the alternative: Make a beeline to this book.

Last year I was seeking a reference book on permanent magnetic motors.I found this book to be an excellent choice.The subject material includes magnetic materials and properties, leading into the various classes of permanent magnet materials, a good review of Maxwell's equations, which is used to lead into several useful analytical models, before closing with a review of permanent magnet devices and electromechanical devices.If the book had included problem sets at the end of each chapter, it would have ended up as an excellent graduate level textbook on the subject.As it is, the book will serve experienced technical folks well, either as a refresher on material already known, or as a method of teaching new material in all its gory detail. ...
