5-0 out of 5 stars A complete treatise of lasers and related subjects
The 3rd edition of this comprehensive book is revised, updated and extended. W. Demtr?der covers almost everything about laser spectroscopy in this voluminous masterpiece.

The book starts with basics of lasers, optical aspects of lasers. There is a large chapter allotted for laser instrumentation, for those who want to learn about the technical features. A lot of informative discussions are given in regards to generation and manipulation of lasers. Recent advances and innovations are also mentioned. A large bibliography accompanies the book, for those who want to delve into further details.

Diagrams are very useful in general. Not all mathematical derivations were given explicitly. The reader is assumed to have some fundamental knowledge of modern physics, optics and lasers. If you follow the book from the beginning to end, you will see that the subjects are built upon preceding sections, which is pedagogically useful.

This book is recommended to those who want to gain a general, comprehensive and profound comprehension of laser spectroscopy. For more detailed and focused topics, one needs to consult more specialized books.

Overall, this is an essential and high-quality book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
This is a very complete introduction book to laser spectroscopy. The thing I like best about this book isclarity. The author lays down basic principles of a set-up in one or two pages, supplemented with illustrations. First 5 chapters are about instruments. Then it is followed by 9 chapters of introduction of different types of laser spectroscopy. The last chapter contains several real-life applications of spectroscopy.

The difference between 2nd and 3rd editions is small. I think only about 10-15 sections are changed. Very few changes in the first 12 chapters. Among the new stuffs, CRDS and frequency combing seem interesting. I skipped the update on the last chapter.I think there is no need to buy the new edition if your cash supply is limited.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book on spectroscopy
This book contains most of the optical spectroscopic methods currently used. A highly recommended book for anyone who wants an introduction to research level spectroscopic methods.

Book Description
This graduate-level text presents the fundamental physics of solid-state lasers, including the basis of laser action and the optical and electronic properties of laser materials. Some knowledge of quantum mechanics and solid-state physics is assumed, but the discussion is as self-contained as possible, making the book an excellent reference as well as useful for independent study. After an overview of the topic, the book is divided into two parts. The first begins with a review of the quantum mechanics and solid-state physics, spectroscopy, and crystal field theory; it then treats the quantum theory of radiation, the emission and absorption of radiation, and nonlinear optics; it concludes with discussions of lattice vibrations and ion-ion interactions and of their effects on optical properties and laser action. The second part treats specific solid-state laser materials, the protypical ruby and Nd-YAG systems being treated in greatest detail; it concludes with a discussion of novel and non-standard materials. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of lasers and basic laser theory!
Dieter Meschede's book Optics, Light and Lasers seems to be divided into three main sections: Chapters 1-6 cover optics; Chapters 7-11 cover lasers and their application; and the third section covers "advanced" topics related to optics and lasers. The first two chapters introduce the reader to the characteristics of light through the presentation of ray optics and wave optics. The three subsequent chapters (chapters 3 to 5) discuss the interaction of light with matter. Although Chapter 6 focuses on optics, it sets up a nice transition from optics to lasers by discussing radiation, inversion and optical gain.

Chapters 7-8 provide a concise overview of the different types of lasers and some of their main applications. These two chapters along with Chapter 9 on semiconductor lasers, provide an excellent summary of the current state of the art in lasers and basic laser theory. The next two chapters cover light sensors and spectroscopy.

Chapters 12-13 briefly introduce nonlinear optics; Appendix A tries to give physical meaning to some of the terms mathematical used in optics relationships; and Appendix B scratches the surface of quantum mechanics. One could skip these sections without detracting from the subject matter or straying too far from the text.

Meschede has liberally scattered the text with sections titled "example" and "excursion." The main difference is that "example" typically presents a special case of the phenomenon discussed, while "excursion" shows a practical example utilizing the theory.

These diversions provide an opportunity to better understand the material. However, in some cases, this reviewer did not see the relevance of some of the excursions.

Optics, Light and Lasers has been translated from German, (Optik, Licht und Laser, Tenbner, 1999). Possibly, because of translation, some of the sentences require more than one reading. The Bibliography has a good references, sparingly referenced in the text. These would be more useful if relevant ones were at the end of each chapter, or were categorized by subject.

The book assumes the reader is familiar with electrodynamics, basic quantum mechanics, and multivariable calculus. It provides a good overview of classical optics with relevant examples from recent applications.

Armchair Interviews says: This is an excellent overview of lasers and basic laser theory.

Book Description
Shuji Nakamura's development of a blue semiconductor laser on the basis of GaN opens the way for a host of new applications of semiconductor lasers. The wavelengths can be tuned by controlling the composition. For the first time it is possible to produce lasers with various wavelengths, ranging from red through yellow and green to blue, in one substrate material. This fact, together with their high efficiency, makes GaN-based lasers very useful for a wide spectrum of applications. The second edition of this basic book on GaN-based devices has been updated and significantly extended. It includes a survey of worldwide research on GaN, as well as Nakamura's latest important developments. The reader finds a careful introduction to the physics and properties of GaN. The main part of the book deals with the production and characteristics of GaN LDs and LEDs. To complete the spectrum of applications, GaN power devices are also described. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the complete story - - but certainly a useful book
Subtitled 'The Complete Story' - it is not - it's just the early years of the story.Whilst this is a very instructive book and a great introduction to the blue laser diode story and technical detail, plenty of others contributed significantly to the blue laser diode story -- but that is not much of what you read in this 'bio' of Nakamura-san.At least you get some brief references to other teams' contributions.

The book reads like a set of 'cut-and-pastes' from Nakamura and his team's research papers - which is no bad thing.It's certainly good to have so much really useful material in one place.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intermediate rather than introductory level
This a very useful book for a researcher just entering field of semiconductor lasers. I would even say that the scope of the book is broader than that - the authors give quite a good picture of kinetic phenomena in optically excited semiconductors, as opposed to mainly static phenomena discussed in Haug&Koch's book. The presentation is very logical: the reader gets basic background on the device structure and fabrication, the possible levels of physical description, numerous kinetic processes involved, necessary elementary background on band structure calculations, etc.

The book should be quite useful for researches rather than students, since the presentation implies firm knowledge of quantum mechanics and laser physics. On the other hand, the presentation is not on the highest level of theoretical complexity, which is a general characteristic of this field, where theorists work very close to experiment and necessity for numerical calculations arise on a rather early stage of research, preventing one from developing too complicated concepts and using overextensive mathematical apparatus. I do not know, if an experimentalists will ever have need to go beyond the theory outlined in this book.

Just one bit of complaint: the formalism based on trancation of theequations for averages, used in this book, may cause slight irritation, as it was used in many other books and reviews, and is often repeated in exactly the same words. Nevertheless it is a very practical approach, and readily usable for a newcomer.

I highly recommend this book as a first introduction to semiconductor optics for those who just start doing research in this field.

Book Description
Super-intense laser pulses produce electric field strength peakvalues of the order of 1016-1018 W/cm2 in theinfrared. The interaction of such fields with an atomic system (atom,molecule, cluster, etc.) gives rise to highly non-linear processessuch as the emission of very fast ions or the production of coherentX-radiation. Such processes have important applications in manydifferent fields, such as biology or nuclear fusion.
The latest research in the area is described here, concentrating on:

  • the double ionisation of complex atoms;
  • the ionisation and dissociation dynamics of molecules;
  • theinteraction of clusters with very intense, femtosecond laser pulses;
  • the production of very intense, coherent short wavelengthradiation;
  • stabilisation and relativistic effects insuper-strong fields;
  • Rydberg atoms and strong field coherentcontrol.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life in Physics
This exciting and highly personal book provides an excellent account of laser-matter interactions from the perspective of one of the pioneers in the field of laser-produced plasmas and laser fusion. It simultaneously develops the broader issues in electromagnetic theory whilst also highlighting the dangers of oversimplifying physical models. The methods of electrodynamics and two-fluid hydrodynamics are used to discuss the importance of non-linear physics.Recent status and topics in plasma physics research are discussed from the perspective of Professor Hora's long and successful involvement in the field. The fundamental nature of laser interactions and their applications are illustrated with numerous examples, including the prospect of power stations providing energy at 1/3 to 1/5 of the present day cost of power generation. Also emphasized is the creation of unexpected new phenomena that result from the non-linearity in laser matter interactions induced by intense laser pulses. Here Professor Hora provides a first hand introduction to his controversial "Principle of Non-Linearity", putting strong arguments that Non-Linearity holds the key to the development of whole new areas in physics and indeed promises to revitalize the whole discipline of Physics. This book will appeal to readers who are interested in laser-plasma physics and who enjoy the human face of research and the assessment new ideas. ... Read more
