Product Description
Path integrals provide a powerful method for describing quantum phenomena. This book introduces the quantum mechanics of particles moving in curved space by employing path integrals and then using them to compute anomalies in quantum field theories. These anomalies provide enormous constraints in the search for physical theories such as those of elementary particles, quantum gravity and string theories. An advanced text for researchers and graduate students of quantum field theory and string theory, the first part is also a stand-alone introduction to path integrals in quantum mechanics. ... Product Description
The various processes that connect the physics of the Sun with that of the Earth`s environment has become known as "Space Weather" during recent years, a slogan that has emerged in connection with many other expressions adapted from meteorology, such as solar wind, magnetic clouds or polar rain. This volume is intended as a first graduate-level textbook-style account on the physics of these solar-terrestrial relations and their impact on our natural and technological environment. ... Product Description
Space storms, the manifestation of bad weather in space, have anumber of physical effects in the near-Earth environment: accelerationof charged particles in space, intensification of electric currents inspace and on the ground, impressive aurora displays, and globalmagnetic disturbances on the Earth's surface. Space weather has beendefined as `conditions on the Sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and atmosphere that can influence theperformance and reliability of space- and ground-based technologicalsystems and can endanger human life'. The 19 chapters of this book, written by some of the foremost experts on the topic, present the mostrecent developments in space storm physics and related technologicalissues, such as malfunction of satellites, communication andnavigation systems, and electric power distribution grids.Readership: researchers, teachers and graduate students in spacephysics, astronomy, geomagnetism, space technology, electric power andcommunication technology, and non-specialist physicists and engineers. ... Product Description
As part of the Physics 2010 decadal survey project, the National Research Council was asked by the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation to recommend priorities for the U.S. particle physics program for the next 15 years. The challenge faced in this study was to identify a compelling leadership role for the United States in elementary particle physics given the global nature of the field and the current lack of a long-term and distinguishing strategic focus. "Revealing the Hidden Nature of Space and Time" provides an assessment of the scientific challenges in particle physics, including the key questions and experimental opportunities, the current status of the U.S. program and the strategic framework in which it sits and a set of strategic principles and recommendations to sustain a competitive and globally relevant U.S. particle physics program. ... Product Description
Presenting the history of space-time physics, from Newton to Einstein, as a philosophical development DiSalle reflects our increasing understanding of the connections between ideas of space and time and our physical knowledge. He suggests that philosophy's greatest impact on physics has come about, less by the influence of philosophical hypotheses, than by the philosophical analysis of concepts of space, time and motion, and the roles they play in our assumptions about physical objects and physical measurements. This way of thinking leads to interpretations of the work of Newton and Einstein and the connections between them. It also offers ways of looking at old questions about a priori knowledge, the physical interpretation of mathematics, and the nature of conceptual change. Understanding Space-Time will interest readers in philosophy, history and philosophy of science, and physics, as well as readers interested in the relations between physics and philosophy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I am transitioning from a Ph.D program in physics to a Ph.D program in the History and Philosophy of Physics. This is the second book on philosophy of physics that I read, and it was great. My specialty is in gravity and, consequently, space and time. This book added a great deal of perspective to my knowledge, and I found myself savoring the technical rigor of this book.Disalle wrote this book with great academic spirit, assuming the reader has a strong grasp of Newton's Principia to the mathematics of Relativity.A must read, even for those who are physics majors/ engineers. ... Product Description
The sun is the source of energy for life on earth and is the strongest modulator of the human physical environment. In fact, the Sun's influence extends throughout the solar system, both through photons, which provide heat, light, and ionization, and through the continuous outflow of a magnetized, supersonic ionized gas known as the solar wind. While the accomplishments of the past decade have answered important questions about the physics of the Sun, the interplanetary medium, and the space environments of Earth and other solar system bodies, they have also highlighted other questions, some of which are long-standing and fundamental. "The Sun to the Earth - and Beyond" organizes these questions in terms of five challenges that are expected to be the focus of scientific investigations in solar and space physics during the coming decade and beyond. ... Product Description
This monograph presents for the first time the foundations ofHamilton Geometry. The concept of Hamilton Space, introduced by thefirst author and investigated by the authors, opens a new domain indifferential geometry with large applications in mechanics, physics, optimal control, etc.The book consists of thirteen chapters. The first three chapterspresent the topics of the tangent bundle geometry, Finsler andLagrange spaces.Chapters 4-7 are devoted to the construction of geometry of Hamiltonspaces and the duality between these spaces and Lagrange spaces. Thedual of a Finsler space is a Cartan space. Even this notion iscompletely new, its geometry has the same symmetry and beauty as thatof Finsler spaces.Chapter 8 deals with symplectic transformations of cotangent bundle. The last five chapters present, for the first time, the geometricaltheory and applications of Higher-Order Hamilton spaces. Inparticular, the case of order two is presented in detail.Audience: mathematicians, geometers, physicists, andmechanicians. This volume can also be recommended as a supplementarygraduate text. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I amthe author so, I have to be humble
It took me 5 years to think about this stuff, so as the author, I must say that I did better than I expected in writing this book.

At the same time I believe that I should be humble.

I am glad to have this at one of the lowest possible prices, since I am more into expressing myself than making any money at all and it's also a part of my belief system not to be lured by money.

I'll have to warn you out there that there are about 5 or 6 accidental extra pages, but it's considered a very good book by most who I have allowed to borrow a copy. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume provides an overview of our current understanding of the physics related to: coronal structures and coronal heating; large-scale coronal shock waves and coronal mass ejections; particle beams in the solar corona and in the interplanetary medium; and explosive energy-release phenomena and particle acceleration. The different articles give a well-balanced presentation of relevant observations based upon various techniques, models and theories, providing a global view of these phenomena and of the underlying physics. In-situ measurements of particles and waves with ULYSSES and WIND and spectral and imaging data from SOHO and YOHKOH provide an unprecedented richness of relevant data. For their better understanding, radio observations - also included in this book - play a key role. ... Read more
