Product Description
The fluctuational theory of superconductivity predicted the existence of high-temperature superconductivity in compounds of rare-earth metals, in ceramic systems, and polymers before its experimental discovery by Bednorz and Müller. This prediction was published in the 1986 (Russian) edition of this monograph. The theory is based on the enhancement of conductivity by fluctuations in the electron spin that arise due to the exchange nature of electron-phonon interactions. This text is intended for physicists and chemists investigating and synthesizing new high temperature superconducting materials. Methods of increasing the critical temperature of high-temperature superconductors are proposed. Macroscopic properties of high-temperature superconductors are investigated both in the superconducting and normal phases by using the theory of gauge fields, differential geometry, and topology. In view of these methods, the book should also be of interest to mathematicians working in nonlinear differential equations. ... Read more

Product Description
Superconductivity has become one of the most intensely studied physical phenomena of our times, with tremendous potential to revolutionize fields as diverse as computing and transportation. This book describes the methods, established results, and recent advances in the field. The goal is to present recently developed theoretical models in light of the long-sought aim of achieving the effect at very high temperatures. The book includes a detailed review of various mechanisms, including phononic, magnetic, and electronic models. The authors focus on the phenomenon of induced superconductivity in the high-temperature oxides, particularly the high-transition-temperature cuprates. They also discuss a variety of low-temperature superconducting systems in conventional materials and organics. The book links the crucial experiments with the most current theories, offering a unified description of the phenomenon. All researchers (and graduate-level) students involved with work in superconductivity will find this an invaluable resource, including solid-state and condensed-matter physicists and chemists, and materials scientists. ... Product Description
Theory of Superconductivity: From Weak to Strong Coupling leads the reader from basic principles through detailed derivations and a description of the many interesting phenomena in conventional and high-temperature superconductors. The book describes physical properties of novel superconductors, in particular, the normal state, superconducting critical temperatures and critical fields, isotope effects, normal and superconducting gaps, tunneling, angle-resolved photoemission, stripes, and symmetries.

The book divides naturally into two parts. Part I introduces the phenomenology of superconductivity, the microscopic BCS theory, and its extension to the intermediate coupling regime. The first three chapters of this part cover generally accepted themes in the conventional theory of superconductivity and serve as a good introduction to the subject. Chapter 4 describes what happens to the conventional theory when the coupling between electrons becomes strong. Part II describes key physical properties of high-temperature superconductors and their theoretical interpretation. Alternative viewpoints are discussed, but the emphasis is placed on the bipolaron theory. ... Read more

Product Description
Superconductivity is a phenomenon occurring in certain materials generally at very low temperatures, characterised by exactly zero electrical resistance and the exclusion of the interior magnetic field. Like ferromagnetism and atomic spectral lines, superconductivity is a quantum mechanical phenomenon. It cannot be understood simply as the idealisation of 'perfect conductivity' in classical physics. Furthermore, superconductivity occurs in a wide variety of materials, including simple elements like tin and aluminium, various metallic alloys and some heavily-doped semiconductors. It does not occur in noble metals like gold and silver, nor in pure samples of ferromagnetic metals. This book gathers the latest research from around the globe in this dynamic field and highlights topics such as super-conducting miniundulators, super-conducting transitions in wire networks, the orbital physics of superconductors, the super-conducting circuits of Josephson junctions, and the types of stresses that affect super-conducting properties and behaviour. ... Product Description
The realizations of physical systems whose quantum states can be directly manipulated have been pursued for experiments on fundamental problems in quantum mechanics and implementations of quantum information devices. Micro-fabricated superconducting systems and electronic spins are among the most promising candidates. This book contains the newest and most advanced research reports on such materials, called "Mesoscopic Superconductivity" and "Spintronics". The former includes superconductor-semiconductor hybrid systems, very small Josephson junctions, and micron-size SQUIDs. The latter includes the control of spin transports in semiconductor heterostructures, nano-scale quantum dots, and spin injections. Superconductor-ferromagnetic metal hybrid structures are covered by both of the topics. ... Read more

Product Description
Superconductivity is the ability of certain materials to conduct electrical current with no resistance and extremely low losses. High temperature superconductors, such as La2-xSrxCuOx (Tc=40K) and YBa2Cu3O7-x (Tc=90K), were discovered in 1987 and have been actively studied since. In spite of an intense, worldwide, research effort during this time, a complete understanding of the copper oxide (cuprate) materials is still lacking. Many fundamental questions are unanswered, particularly the mechanism by which high-Tc superconductivity occurs. More broadly, the cuprates are in a class of solids with strong electron-electron interactions. An understanding of such 'strongly correlated' solids is perhaps the major unsolved problem of condensed matter physics with over ten thousand researchers working on this topic. High-Tc superconductors also have significant potential for applications in technologies ranging from electric power generation and transmission to digital electronics. This ability to carry large amounts of current can be applied to electric power devices such as motors and generators, and to electricity transmission in power lines. For example, superconductors can carry as much as 100 times the amount of electricity of ordinary copper or aluminium wires of the same size. Many universities, research institutes and companies are working to develop high-Tc superconductivity applications and considerable progress has been made. This book presents the latest research in this blossoming field. ... Read more
