Product Description

Autism was once thought of as a rare condition, until the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network released the statistic that about 1 in every 150 eight-year-old children in various areas across the United States is afflicted by an autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. This news led to a dramatic expansion of research into autism spectrum disorders and to the emergence of applied behavior analysis (ABA) as the preferred method of treatment, even among prescribing practitioners.

Applied Behavioral Analysis for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders ably synthesizes research data and trends with best-practice interventions into a comprehensive, state-of-the-art resource. Within its chapters, leading experts review current ABA literature in depth; identify interventions most relevant to children across the autism spectrum; and discuss potential developments in these core areas:

  • Assessment methods, from functional assessment to single case research designs.
  • Treatment methods, including reinforcement, replacement behaviors, and other effective strategies.
  • The role of the differential diagnosis in ABA treatment planning.
  • Specific deficit areas: communication, social skills, stereotypies/rituals.
  • Target behaviors, such as self-injury, aggression, adaptive and self-help problems.
  • ASD-related training concerns, including maintenance and transition issues, and parent training programs.

This volume is a vital resource for researchers, graduate students, and professionals in clinical child and school psychology as well as the related fields of education and mental health.

Product Description

Behavioral techniques used in animals to model human diseases and predict effects of novel drugs are as varied as the numbers of scientists who use them. Consequently, behavioral analysis is becoming an increasingly indispensable tool for the neuroscientist as information gained at the molecular and cellular level is put into practice in fully behaving animal subjects.

Uses Animal Behavior Models to Examine Effects of Therapeutic Treatments on Human Cognition

With contributions from more than 40 field specialists, Methods of Behavioral Analysis in Neuroscience reflects six years worth of updates to its first bestselling edition and elucidates new behavioral approaches that are quickly becoming field standards. This edition features new material on the relevance of transgenic mouse models for Alzheimer’s disease, behavioral methods for assessing the cognitive impairment associated with major psychotic disorders, the revival of the scopolamine reversal model for assessing the clinical relevance of AD drugs, and approaches to assessing cognitive impairment in aged mice.

Each chapter presents theoretical background, methodology, and data interpretation, and many chapters include real-world examples of experiments that incorporate the models. With step-by-step, easy-to-reproduce methodologies, this sharply focused work covers well-studied behavioral approaches that provide a better understanding of the effects of disease and allow for better predictability of the effects of therapeutic treatments on the human cognition. It takes the guesswork out of designing the methodology for many of the most widely used animal behavioral approaches developed for the study of brain disorders, drug abuse, toxicology, and cognitive drug development.

Product Description
"Designed primarily for teachers and school psychologists, this text reviews the literature on behavioral processes used in school-specific techniques like contracting, self-management, and token economies. Much of the material applies to mainstream classrooms and activities, but there are also chapters dealing with hyperactivity, aggression, withdrawal, depression, and suicide. Studies of such specimen populations as autistic, delinquent, or retarded children are also cited. The authors' stated intent is to provide a balanced mix of theory and methods, so that skills can be developed with confidence in the underlying knowledge base. The heavy emphasis on research, however, makes it a valuable guide to the theoretical study of behavioral science." Readings: A Journal of Mental Health Reviews, Commentary ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear and entertaining look at behavior analysis
Using the clever literary device of having a fictional instructor dialog with his students, Paul Chance has put together a wonderful and entertaining text to introduce students to the science and application of behavior analysis. For those who have only heard of applied behavior analysis as being a "treatment" for autism, this book will be a fun-to-read eye-opener.

Paul Chance delivers a great book loaded with material that is brought to you in a very interesting way.The setting is basically a class room with students talking to the teacher, writing facts/terms on the board, and an intense interaction with student to teacher dialogue. This book is a must for those interesting in Applied Behavior Analysis.Paul Chance makes an interesting subject extremely fun to indulge in. This hands-on volume, drawn from years of experience interviewing suspects, reveals the targeted subject interviewing process (TSI). This technique combines all known tactics learned from criminal personality profiling and investigative analysis into an effective strategy for interviewing a suspect. The book describes the skill sets and essential elements that directly contribute to a successful interrogation and outlines an interview plan using these analytical and profiling concepts.

Topics discussed include:

  • Origins of offender motivation
  • An analytical methodology for criminal investigative analysis

5-0 out of 5 stars Behavior, Truth and Deception
Michael Napier's Behavior Truth and Deception, exceptionally integrates scholarly research and theory, as well as serves as an excellent field guide for a practitioner. All concepts are illustrated by powerful case studies which provide the reader with the opportunity to closely examine the concepts and understand human behavior within the interview process. The author's insight and experience is evident throughout the book.Chapter 4 offers a discussion on setting the stage for success; in particular it examines interviewer traits, I found this topic very helpful and relevant for all law enforcement personnel. As a law enforcement professional, as well as a college professor, I strongly recommend this textbook as an excellent guide for both practitioners and for those in world of academia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Behavior, Truth and Deception is an outstanding resource for the law enforcement investigator who wishes to improve his/her interviewing and interrogation skills. The book contains previously unpublished concepts on detecting deception, interviewing strategies and interrogation techniques which are based upon the author's extensive field experience as an FBI agent/polygraph examiner and have been tested and refined through trial and error. I am a working police detective and have read many books on the topic of interviewing and interrogation. Some have been a waste of money while others genuinely expanded my understanding of I&I techniques. This book is well worth the money and the time you will spend reading it. If you learn and apply the techniques described in this book, you will most certainly improve your ability to detect deception and obtain confessions. If you are truly serious about improving your I&I skills, the information in this book will be worth its weight in gold. ... Read more

Product Description
The US Dept. of Education, in conjunction with the US Dept. of Health and Human Services, recently unveiled a $50 million effort to expand research on early childhood cognitive development.A key issue identified requiring more information and research was the education and professional development of educators.Along these lines, Doug Greer has prepared a book discussing how best to teach, how to design functional curricula, and how to support teachers in using state-of-the-art science instruction materials.

The book provides important information both to trainers of future teachers, current teachers, and to supervisors and policy makers in education. To trainers there is information on how to motivate, mentor, and instruct in-service teachers to use the best scientifically based teaching strategies and tactics. To in-service teachers, there is information on how to provide individualized instruction in classrooms with multiple learning and behavior problems, school interventions to help prevent vandalism and truancy, and how curricula and instruction can be designed to teach functional repetoirs rather than inert ideas. To policy makers and supervisors, the book discusses how to determine the effectiveness of curricular innitiatives toward meeting mandated standards in national assessments.

Doug Greer was recently awarded the Fred S. Keller Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education by APA for the research and application of the material covered in this book.School programs incorporating the material used in this book have produced 4-7 times more learning outcomes for students than control and baseline educational programs (see www.cabas.com)

The book provides research-based and field-tested procedures for:
* Teaching students of all ability levels ranging from preschool to secondary school
* How to teach special education students in the context of a regular classroom
* Best practices for all teachers to teach more effectively
* Means of monitoring and motivating teachers' practices

* A comprehensive and system-wide science of teaching-post modern-postmodern!
* Tested procedures that result in four to seven times more learning for all
students
* Tested procedures for supervisors to use with teachers that result in
significant student learning
* Tested procedures for providing the highest accountability
* A systems approach for schooling problems that provide solutions rather
than blame
* Parent approved and parent requested educational practices
* Means for psychologists to work with teachers and students to solve
behavior and learning problems
* A comprehensive systems science of schooling
* An advanced and sophisticated science of pedagogy and curriculum design
* Students who are not being served with traditional education can meet or
exceed the performance of their more fortunate peers,
* Supervisors can mentor teachers and therapists to provide state of the
science instruction
* Parent education can create a professional setting for parents, educators,
and therapists to work together in the best interests of the student,
* Teachers and supervisors who measure as they teach produce significantly
better outcomes for students,
* Systemic solutions to instructional and behavioral problems involving
teachers, parents, supervisors provide means to pursue problems to their

5-0 out of 5 stars Designing Teching Strategies
SMART! Nicely written and very clear language. Public school systems could learn alot from this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most important text since Cooper, Heron, & Heward
This text explains EXACTLY how to make the everyday practice of teaching with ABA work BEYOND the one-to-one home program for a single student. It is the most comprehensive extension of "what to do and how to do it" since Cooper, Heron, & Heward's "Applied Behavior Analysis."

What Dr. Greer dubs the "ABA Systems Approach" springs from the university informing comprehensive application of behavior analsyis to schooling settings (CABAS schools). However, the text can also stand indepenent of that special environment; and its contents are immediately applicable to individual practitioners in home and community settings.

Chapters summarize advances in practice and current research in verbal behavior; creating literacy and mathematics curricula for students who need ABA methodology to learn; and how to supervise other professionals in advancing their ABA and research skills.

Especially useful are tables that translate students' performance trouble into potential repertoires that may not be fully taught or reinforcement contingencies that may be lacking; and team actions that would remedy those problems. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy-read text book for my university course
This is a great book as far as textbooks go.It is easy to read, very informative and has good tables and figures for developing behavioral objectives.I think this will also be a great reference in the future for other classes or even a Master's or Doctoral thesis.I will be keeping this textbook in my "library" as I feel that it will serve me well now and in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reduced Price Makes Text A More Reasonable Buy
I noticed a significant drop in price for this textbook. Therefore I'd like to revise my rating up to four stars.Schloss and Smith do provide afine review of ABA in the classroom. Its a good solid elementary text.True some topics are not covered, but perhaps there will be a more advancedtext in the future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Better books available for less...
Its a fairly decent review of behavior analysis applied to theclassroom.I'd give it a higher score if it didn't cost $.. for a 300page cheaply made paperback. There is not much new in this book that hasn't been published elsewhere. Also, there isn't a lot of practical information for a teacher working for a school district. It's a typical undergrad college text. The book doesn't go far enough. For example, there is a section on group contingencies in the classroom, but no mention of "Learnball".Not much on discrete trial training either. Direct Instruction is mentioned, but the instructional strategy behind programs such as Reading Mastery and Connecting Math Concepts isn't discussed. There is a lot of excellent information in the book, its just that for cost I expected a lot more. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Behavior Analysis for Lasting Change
This text deals with methods and stragegies of analyzing and modifying behaviors. Within the text I specifically focused on chapter nine through twelve which involved increasing behavior through the use of positive reinforcement. I also give special attention to chapters twenty-four and twenty-five dealing with decreasing behaviors incompatible with underisable behavior, and to a lesser extent the use of punishment. Mastery of these tools will enable teachers to effectively deal with most of the situations faced in today's classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best summary of Applied Behavior Analysis
If you want to change things, you always have to take human behavior into account. Behavior analysis is the science that does this very precisely. It helps you to measure and to change the behaviors of yourself and others for getting the results that you want.
The book of Beth Sulzer-Azaroff en Roy Mayer gives an excellent summary of the way behavior can be changed succesfully. It tells you how to measure behavior, how to increase desirable behavior, how to decrease undesirable behavior and how to extend and maintain behavior.
If you really want to understand behavior and concrete tools to change it, you should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for SAR
This book is a must for SAR incident managers and team leaders. It is very useful for other SAR personnel. It does not give some magic formula that divulges where a lost person will be found, but it does cause searchers to think about assumptions they make, consciously or unconsciously, about the likely behavior of lost subjects. As is so often the case, what is really harmful is not what we do not know, but what we think we know that is not so.

This is not a book for the casual reader who wants stories about SAR.It is a dry compilation of statistics on lost person operations. There are collections of stories and anecdotes that would be far more edyfying and satisfying, but for its intended audience of SAR professionals, this book is indispensible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great SAR tool for making evidence based decisions

I was pleased with Mr. Syrotuck's approach to the topic of lost persons. It is completely evidenced based and factual. There are very little opinionated claims to cloud the judgement of the readers. This tool helps enables the SAR professional to make the best possible effort in finding persons based on age, mindset, and terrain. Thanks for the great effort and I'll look forward to reading your future works.

3-0 out of 5 stars dry but valuable
Although the author's analysis and commentary are minimal, the data in this book is still a valuable addition to any SAR member's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars The standard small text...
This book is the standard small text that describes a study upon which way too much seems to have been decided about how lost persons are likely to behave. A very good introduction to a topic that deserves much more study.
