5-0 out of 5 stars Behavioral Detectives
This book examines several behavioral case studies in a user-friendly format. The content of this book is enlightening and absorbing, while laced with the sardonic sense of humor of Dr. Newman. As a speech-language pathologist who knew close to nothing about ABA, I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone involved with a child on the spectrum--or for anyone who simply would like a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Dr. Newman has done it again. His expert first hand knowledge in the Autism field is evident again with another outstanding work. As the parent of an Autistic child, I have yet to find another published series of books that I can so closely relate to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia Brown for Parents/Professionals!
I anticipated the arrival of this book as I was a huge fan of the Encyclopedia Brown series as a kid.Behavioral Detectives did not dissapoint.Throughout each case, I found myself (an 'expert' in behavior) enjoying myself immensely and learning!I utilized this with some undergraduate students to teach them how to start picking apart situations to determine which factors may be influencing the behavior and it was an all around enjoyable activity -- making an easy job of teaching and a fun job of learning.Bobby Newman has once again done an exemplary job of bringing such an important science to the world without compromising the integrity or turning folks off with technical jargon.
I would recommend this book to members of any of the following groups:
professionals who want to see if they can keep up with the sleuth himself, or learn some new things along the way, consumers of behavioral services-- I thinkthey'll appreciate the real-life scenarios, and realize that sometimes that fresh pair of eyes is key and anyone else who is interested in behavioral science and/or who is involved in it.In fact, I can't imagine a group that wouldn't find this book interesting and useful from the down-to-earth yet technically intact feature to Bobby's subtle (and not so subtle) humor scattered throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a definite must-have
This book is a great tool to help learn and practice utilizing behavioral thinking in real life scenarios. The format allows the reader to examine a case study, develop their own hypothesis, and then flip to another section for the "solution", thus creating the ultimate training tool. What is great about this book is that it is interactive training on paper.Fifty-nine cases are included which are interesting and easy to read. It's a fun way to learn.More importantly, you are learning practical and useful information.I am always looking for parent friendly material.I especially liked that this book includes authors who are also parents and siblings of individuals with Autism. So hooray for that. It's a definite must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource for parents and professionals!
What an ingenious idea! This is an easy yet intellectual read for the whole community who services, advocates or parent a child on the spectrum. Thank you Dr. Newman for another wonderful addition to the collection of "must haves" on the shelves of those in our field.

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic
This book is a classic, foundational work in the field of discrete choice theory, written in Duncan Luce's typically crystal-clear prose and mathematics. The 1950s was clearly a fertile time for the decision sciences and this book---much like Luce's other book (co-authored with Raiffa) on game theory---shows this clearly. In this book, Luce introduces what came to be called "Luce's choice rule" or "Luce's choice axiom", providing a stochastic generalization of Arrow's independence of irrelevant alternatives axiom; in short, he invented multinomial logit analysis, although he quickly moved on to other things leaving the development to others. Everything built by authors such as 2000 Nobel Laureate Daniel McFadden rests (as he freely admits in his Nobel lecture) on Luce's fundamental contribution. It's really great that it's been made available again at an affordable price, making it possible for those of us who have continuously charged library copies to finally return them! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Evidence-based practice in education
The book "Focus on Behavior Analysis in Education" is based on presentations made at Ohio State University's third Focus on Behavior Analysis in Education conference. (Each of the prior two conferences also resulted in very worthwhile books). The 19 articles, written by experts in the fields of education and behavior analysis, cover such topics as autism treatment, educational program design, teacher training, schools that use behavior analysis successfully, the supposed detrimental effects of rewards on intrinsic motivation, and why there is continued resistance to behavior analysis's broader acceptance in the educational system.

The book begins with two articles concerning the education and treatment of individuals with autism spectrum disorders, currently a very hot topic in the field of behavior analysis. The lead article by the late Donald Baer, "Letters to a Lawyer" is a synopsis of Baer's responses to criticisms and misconceptions about applied behavior analysis (ABA). The article could easily serve as a "how-to guide" for why ABA is the best-practice recommendation for autism treatment. In another article, autism advocate Catherine Maurice, and author of "Let Me Hear Your Voice," writes eloquently about the shameful state of affairs in autism treatment, a field that is unfortunately pervaded by pseudoscientific and anti-scientific beliefs. Maurice points out, however, that the use of empirically-validated treatments for autism (such as ABA) has recently seen a wider dissemination. In the second part of the same article, Bridget Taylor describes the necessary characteristics of effective early intensive behavioral intervention for autism.

The remainder of the book deals with some of behavior analysis's less well known forays into the education field. Two articles, one by Sugai and Homer, and the other by Peterson and Lacy-Rismiller, address the philosophy and practice of positive behavior support in the schools. Discussed is the notion that positive behavior support needs to be implemented at all school levels, not just at the level of behavioral interventions for students. These articles are particularly relevant since they squash the myth that behavior analysis is used only for removing undesirable behavior.

Other articles examine issues pertaining to the development of effective teachers. Maheady, Harper, and Mallette, for example, describe the implementation of a preparation program in behavior analysis for preservice teachers. In another article, Alber and Nelson describe how student teachers and their mentors can more effectively research areas pertaining to quality instruction.

A very interesting article by Rolider and Axelrod examines variables concerning why behavior analysis has not been more widely accepted. Using empirical data, they demonstrate that laypersons view behavioral interventions in a much more favorable manner when the interventions are described in conversational language, and not in technical jargon. In contrast, when technical jargon is used to describe these interventions, they are rated as being less understandable and less compassionate.

Another hindrance to behavior analysis's acceptance in the education field may have to do with the popular belief that rewards impede the intrinsic motivation to learn. (This idea is argued by Alfie Kohn in his influential book "Punished By Rewards"). In an article by Judy Cameron, she argues that the negative effects of rewards are not supported by empirical research, except under very narrow and contrived circumstances. Rather, when properly implemented, reinforcement has been shown to be an effective process for behavior change that typically has no negative effects for learning. (This article is somewhat of a "Readers Digest" condensed version of Cameron's recent book "Rewards and Intrinsic Motivation: Resolving the Controversy" which was co-authored with W. David Pierce. Interested readers may wish to take a look at that book for a more thorough debunking of this educational myth.)

In the book's final, and perhaps most powerful, article, Bill Heward argues that there are many reasons why educational specialists should be more interested in what behavior analytic practices could offer for education. Unfortunately, as Heward points out, many of the philosophical views in education contradict those in behavior analysis, as well as contradicting the empirical research! He describes how educators often see the use of behavior analysis as too simplistic, too confining, and as an impediment to their creativity. Heward argues effectively against these impediments and provides suggestions for increasing the likelihood that behavior analysis will find a broader acceptance in education.

"Focus on Behavior Analysis in Education" is a must read for any professional who wishes to employ the most effective educational methods. In this time of No Child Left Behind and the need for evidenced-based practice, the time is right for the field of education to finally embrace what a science of behavior has to offer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Money Maker
It is clear that the author cares about the subject and had put a lot of work into the research for this book. However the book is too theoretical and does not give the reader any tangible practical skills. If your objective in reading financial books is to improve your investment record in terms of actual dollars made, than this book is not for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Efficient market or the herd behavior?
Everyday, reporters and analysts produce dozens of reports about the markets and they try to forecast what will happen next. Most of the time, analyst forecasts are wrong. Market action is in the unexpected direction. The reason why the analysts are often wrong is that they use efficient market hypothesis as a method to forecast the market action. Is the market really efficient and individuals behave rationally or the herd psychology is the main reason of the price action which is following certain patterns?

Read this book.

Mr. Plummer's book handles the problem as a psychological phenomen and examines the dynamics of crowd behaviour. This book clearly describes how financial crowds integrate and disintegrate. Every crowd has a life cycle and in this cycle, the growth, maturity and decline periods follow each other. Mathematical model of the formation and disintegration periods of the bull and bear crowd life cycles, is the Fibonacci number series and this book explains the connections between the growth and decline periods.

Mr Plummer further explains Logarithmic spiral and golden ratio in detail and how they can be used to forecast the future market movements.

This book is a must-read for the financial professionals and the traders.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Revealing Modern Book on Mass Psychology of Markets

In his quiet, understated, very British way, but with a tremendous clarity and style this professionalmoney manager reveals mass psychology is behind market moves. If themarkets drive you crazy with their seemingly irrational swings, read thisbook to see the logic behind disorder. Tony Plummer illuminates marketmovements for you in a way that will impact your understanding for as longas you trade. Then he shares some of his analytic techniques. 4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Enzyme Kinetics
Most biochemistry texts allot very little space for enzyme kinetics. Usually, there is a brief discussion of Michaelis-Menten single substrate kinetics. Oddly enough, in these days of gender equality, many texts fail to mention that the fathers of kinetics were actually women. This book continues the discussion by providing the basic theories that allow us to access enzyme action. The behavior of enzymes in the presence of various types of inhibitors and the effect of allosteric effectors are also discussed. It also discusses Bi Bi kinetics and gives the beginner a great starting point is the study of enzyme kinetics. All of this is accomplished at a level easily understood by the average biology or chemistry major.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
I recently took a graduate course in enzymology and purchased this text as a supplement to my lectures. It proved invaluable as a guide to approach problems in enzyme kinetics.Dr. Segel derives the equations and interprets his graphs for the reader to follow. This is truly comprehensive and authoritative; however it is dry and technical. The author thoroughly describes initial velocity kinetics, multisubstrate kinetics, as well as Cleland kinetics.I would recommend this to students in biochemistry, as well as a reference for those doing work with enzymes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Encyclopaedic enzyme kinetics
Irwin Segel wrote his book in 1974, but it was reprinted (without revision) in 1993 and remains available, still apparently selling steadily.

The main thing that will strike any reader coming to this book for the first time is that at nearly 1000 pages it is far longer than any of its competitors. Chapter 9, which gives a blow-by-blow account of all the multireactant mechanisms that the author could think of, accounts for 340 pages all by itself, making it considerably longer than Alejandro Marangoni's whole book "Enzyme Kinetics: a modern approach", also published by Wiley, but in 2003. The problem with this approach, it seems to me, is that nature does not provide examples of all the kinds of behaviour that Segel can think of, but does provide examples of some kinds of behaviour that he does not mention, such as kinetic cooperativity (i.e. cooperativity that cannot be attributed to interactions between two or more catalytic sites). For that reason, I think that any attempt to treat the subject in an encyclopaedic fashion must ultimately fail.

Experts in fast-reaction kinetics (which I am not) typically classify textbooks of enzyme kinetics into ones that treat fast reactions badly and ones that don't treat them at all. Segel's book comes into the latter category, and that is perhaps a virtue. For the first 942 pages one might think that he had made the same choice over statistical treatment of data, but then at the very end there are two pages that have all the apearance of an afterthought. Until then, all of the many figures either show no experimental points, or they show points that lie exactly on the lines they are supposed to fit. About the two-page Appendix itself, perhaps the less said the better.

Having said that, there is also plenty to like in Segel's book. If you need information on points that lend themselves to the encyclopaedic approach -- for example if you want to track down one of the many graphical methods for analysing kinetic data that appeared between 1950 and 1975 -- then this is the first and most convenient place to look.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enzyme Kinetics Bible
This technical treasure is the bible of enzyme kinetics. Any enzyme mechanic or kineticist who has somehow missed this little tome does not know what they are missing. My copy is in tatters from freqent use and willhave to be replaced soon...

5-0 out of 5 stars An honored place on my bookshelf.
Segel's book is the ultimate in enzyme kinetics.I bought my first copy in 1978 and have probably used it 300 times since then.It deserves an honored place on every biochemists bookself. ... Read more

Book Description
In this book J. E. R. Staddon proposes an explanation of behavior that lies between cognitive psychology, which seeks to explain it in terms of mentalistic constructs, and cognitive neuroscience, which tries to explain it in terms of the brain. Staddon suggests a new way to understand the laws and causes of learning, based on the invention, comparison, testing, and modification or rejection of parsimonious real-time models for behavior. The models are neither physiological nor cognitive: they are behavioristic. Staddon shows how simple dynamic models can explain a surprising variety of animal and human behavior, ranging from simple orientation, reflexes, and habituation through feeding regulation, operant conditioning, spatial navigation, stimulus generalization, and interval timing. ... Book Description

Now in softcover for the first time, the most comprehensive guide to behavioral treatment for these prevalent yet understudied disorders.

As upsetting as they are to clients, tics, trichotillomania, and oral-digital habits such as thumb-sucking and nail-biting tend to be resistant to traditional forms of therapy. The repetitiveness of their actions, however, makes these dissimilar disorders particularly receptive to behavioral treatment. Editors Woods and Miltenberger have assembled 22 therapist/researchers to create a state-of-the-art resource for clinicians challenged by clients with repetitive behavior disorders (RBDs).This book contains:

Three complete treatment manuals explaining step-by-step therapy for tic disorders, trichotillomania, and oral-digital RBDs
Clear rationales for why behavioral methods are so effective for these disorders
Guidelines for direct and indirect assessment
Interventions for related RBDs, including bruxism, rumination, pica, and stuttering
A Separate chapter on treating RBDs in persons with developmental disorders
Contact information for advocacy and educational groups

Recent studies have established the effectiveness of behavioral treatment for these disorders, and the re-issue of this book will continue to bring this important modality to the fore. While it is especially geared toward practitioners, the contributors have made Tic Disorders relevant to researchers and sufficiently accessible to be recommended to patients and their families as well.
