5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, great book (for undergrads)
This textbook is surprisingly interesting. I find I learn much more here than in class. The illustrations have really good detail, yet are simple enough to comprehend with just basic biology and psychology knowledge. Pretty expensive though. I was thinking of getting the previous edition, but waited too close to the start of the semester, so I bought the new version on here. This is one class you may actually want to buy the book. I know I'll be keeping it (although that might not may say much since I keep all my psyc books).

I got the book on time and the book was in the condition that it was said to be.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase
Delivery was very fast but the book had a bit more random highlighting then expected. But overall I am happy with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book for school
Don't get me wrong, this book is in horrible condition. The spine is dis-attached from the book. It has been highlighted to an excess. But for the price, I will be okay. 14 dollars including shipping... wow I definitely felt accomplished when the kid next to me the first day of class had a used book sticker on his. The price for it used at the bookstore on campus was 150 dollars. Again, I feel completely satisfied for the condition of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bio Psyc Book
I was so happy about this book and the fact that the seller did a great job sending, packaging, and writing in detail the condition of this book. She also kept in in great condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars purchased text book
In general I am very happy with my product. The only thing that I was concerned with was that I am in the U.S. and the book came from Austria. However, the company worked with me in getting the book farely quickly. Overall I'm very happy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good text book.
This book is actually pretty awesome for a text book. The writer throws in some humor periodically and takes a straightforward approach to explanations. There are several charts that summarize information well. And there are some great diagrams that really clarify the writing. There is also a companion website with FANTASTIC animations and practice tests. It's really helpful.

If you want a text book that will make Bio Psyc a little bit easier and a lot more fun I recoomend this text book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Biological Psychology
This book is spacey, hard to follow, and is lacking in luster. A better book to get for your course is Biological Psychology by Kalat. his explanations are easy to understand and he includes enough information so that your paragraph isn't filled with unnecessary vocab terms. This book is a complete waste of time and leaves a lot for interpretation. If it's required for your class, make sure you buy study guides and other informational material, or never ever miss a class session. I have had physics books that are easier to understand and better written than this magnificent piece of intellectualization. My advice, if this book is required, wait for a better teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly informative
This book was designed to be a textbook, and usually I'm not really fond of my textbooks. However, this book is incredibly interesting, in addition to being informative. This is most certainly a book which I will keep as a reference book instead of a textbook I want to re-sell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent textbook!
I use this textbook in my undergraduate physiological psychology course. Kalat is very clear, he uses wonderful illustrations, and the CD is a nice resource. I recommend it for other instructors.

4-0 out of 5 stars cells over systems
I'm a biopsychologist.Kalat is a very good writer with a gift for explaining difficult concepts and for keeping technical issues interesting.I chose his Intro Psych book for my classes for just this reason. My response to this book is a little more mixed.Biopsychology ranges broadly from cellular to systems level research. This book does well at the former level. It gets a little more deeply into the biochemistry than I would prefer but does so well and is impressively up to date.It does less well at the systems level literature. For example, it defines two common imaging terms incorrectly: PET and rCBF (mixing them up with SPECT and PET respectively).Overall, I like the book and chose it for my biopsychology class but every instructor needs to choose based on their own needs for depth and for emphasis.

4-0 out of 5 stars as for textbooks.....
as for textbooks for a biopsych class, this book is certainly interesting and the enhanced cd is definitely a plus.this book has not yet been used as a pillow for a sudden study break nap.the pictures are clear, the writing is friendly, and it's too bad that more texts can't be like this!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook!
I'm a freshman Psychology student at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands)... I used this book to study for my course Biological Psychology (duh!)... Anyway, this book is very organized, good summaries and a clear explanation of all the important concepts... Even if you don't have much knwoledge of biology, you will understand this book... at least I did... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars There is no "Paperback" edition! it is the study guide only.
Do not order the "paperback edition" thinking wow, it's much cheaper. The paperback edition is the study guide, not the textbook.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes reads like a dictionary
This book looks pretty and I was very excited about the subject matter. I was taking Psychobiology as a general education class and the teacher chose this book. The book is filled with so many definitions that it almost reads like a dictionary at one point. The second chapter has over 100 key words listed. It is constant factual information that leaves you bored and burnt out by the end. This would be appropriate possibly for a class within the major of biology but not for a beginning class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I use this book to teach an advanced level undergraduate course, and it has been terrific. It simplifies the material so that it is easy to understand without oversimplification which has been traditionally the problem with such introductory texts. Overall, high marks for Klein and Thorne's well-designed well-written text. It makes teaching and learning the material a breeze. My students have also positively commented on this text.

1-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book, but I did not order it.
Well, the book is wonderful. It came in on time and provided me with an oppurtunity to avance my education, but I cancelled that book. Well, I though I had cancelled it. Anyway, maybe next time.

The Third Edition continues its successful combination of educational features that encourage the student to learn and make teaching easier for the instructor. Marginal questions scattered throughout the chapter help keep the student focused, while sectional Concept Checks and self tests provide immediate feedback on the student’s understanding of the material. At the end of each chapter the student is encouraged toward further exploration by the web links found in Online Resources, the references in For Further Reading, and the probing questions of For Further Thought. Throughout the chapters, Application boxes take the student a step beyond the chapter material, and In the News features tell the student that biopsychology is both timely and relevant.

The Third Edition devotes an entire chapter to intelligence and cognitive functioning and another to consciousness. Product Description
“This fantastic introduction to Biological Psychology brings the subject to life in a way that no traditional textbook can. I will certainly be recommending it.”   Brian Wink, Southampton Solent University

"My first reaction was that it was both imaginative and courageous. Having read it, I would add that it also makes a significant contribution to the available texts on biological psychology. This approach is just what students are looking for.”   Graham Mitchell, University of Northampton

Taking a refreshingly innovative approach to the subject, Biological Psychology: An Illustrated Survival Guide uses cartoons as an effective teaching medium. Each chapter is organised into a mini lecture, and offers an accessible introduction to key topics including:

  • The brain and nervous system
  • Vision and audition
  • The mechanical and chemical senses
  • Emotions and sexual behaviour
  • Memory and learning

Intended to complement traditional textbooks in the area, Biological Psychology: An Illustrated Survival Guide provides undergraduate and ‘A’ level students with an alternative introduction to biological psychology and an invaluable study aid. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great example of comics non-fiction
This guide is one of the best current examples of using the sequential art format to convey technical information in an engaging way. Research on learning highlights the value of dual coding (visual and verbal modes) and of high interest levels. This book---and the comics medium, in general---excels in these areas. The artwork is clearly not intended for high-end aesthetic purposes, nor is the script / dialogue. But that is fine because the purpose of the text is to clearly communicate the material, which it does very well.

Overall, this is an excellent use of extended, narrative diagrams for teaching. ... Read more
