Product Description
This highly successful and student-friendly text looks at the relationship between biological factors (mostly brain activity) and behavior, and shows students what biology has to do with psychology. As he captures and engages readers' interest, Kalat reveals how such aspects of brain activity as neurotransmission and neuroanatomy relate to "real" psychological topics such as language and learning, sexual behavior, anxiety, aggressive behavior, depression, and schizophrenia.

Now thoroughly revised throughout with new art, research, examples, and more coverage of genetics and evolution, this latest edition maintains the strengths of past editions while adding a whole new look and feel--in less than 600 pages! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not well define enough.....
This book is good for those who have some basic knowledge in biology. For those who doesn't, would find it hard to understand. I have compared it with other text books and I felt that some of the terms are defined verybriefly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I highly recommend this book.As an undergraduate psychology student who just completed a physiological psychology course using this text, I can assure professors that it is a very useful, clear, and well organized textbook. It is much better than most college textbooks. ... Read more

Description:
The polyvagal theory introduced a new perspective relating autonomic function to behavior, that included an appreciation of the autonomic nervous system as a ''system,'' the identification of neural circuits involved in the regulation of autonomic state, and an interpretation of autonomic reactivity as adaptive within the context of the phylogeny of the vertebrate autonomic nervous system. The paper has two objectives: first, to provide an explicit statement of the theory; and second, to introduce the features of a polyvagal perspective. The polyvagal perspective emphasizes how an understanding of neurophysiological mechanisms and phylogenetic shifts in neural regulation leads to different questions, paradigms, explanations, and conclusions regarding autonomic function in biobehavioral processes than peripheral models. Foremost, the polyvagal perspective emphasizes the importance of phylogenetic changes in the neural structures regulating the autonomic nervous system and how these phylogenetic shifts provide insights into the adaptive function and the neural regulation of the two vagal systems. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Well, it's a textbook
These things are always obscenely overpriced, and this book is no different. If you're buying it it's probably because you're in college taking a class and you need it, so find the cheapest price. Be careful you don't accidentally buy the accompanying study guide to this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring and wordy explanations
I took a Biopsychology course with this textbook and I was entirely ungrateful that my professor chose it.This textbook is like a conglomeration of hundreds of research publications, instead of an introductory textbook. It would explain one topic after another without giving the reader a larger view of what all of this means in context to answering big biology and psychology questions. The paragraphs and sections were needlessly long and wordy.Instead of presenting easily accessible information, the author surrounded every fact with long-winded explanations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized! Boring!
As an introductory textbook for Biological Psychology, this book could certainly take a step back. There is jumbles of information slipped in between long, and not to mention boring, wordy non-explanations.I think the author assumes too much of its readers.I can't seem to make sense of half this text, and I'm not dumb! This book was just organized in a fashion that I find extremely confusing. All graphics and the book itself was fine, just the writing was horrible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toates on Biological Psychology
This text by Fred Toates is a spectacularly well done summary of the field of biological psychology. Not only would it be a first-rate text for courses, but an excellent self-education tool in one of the most exciting areas of science. The writing is crisp and interesting, permitting relatively easy reading of difficult materials. There are abundant examples to engage any student, and the illustrations are stunning.Toates does not avoid important philosophical issues as do many books of this type.He puts the all too abundant facts in a context which makes assimilation of material a delight. This is on the top of my list of texts to use in the relevant courses. It is also among the foremost I would recommend for those who want to study how brain and bodily functions help make us who we are. ... Description:
In science, theories lend coherence to vast amounts of descriptive information. However, current diagnostic approaches in psychopathology are primarily atheoretical, emphasizing description over etiological mechanisms. We describe the importance of Polyvagal Theory toward understanding the etiology of emotion dysregulation, a hallmark of psychopathology. When combined with theories of social reinforcement and motivation, Polyvagal Theory specifies etiological mechanisms through which distinct patterns of psychopathology emerge. In this paper, we summarize three studies evaluating autonomic nervous system functioning in children with conduct problems, ages 4-18. At all age ranges, these children exhibit attenuated sympathetic nervous system responses to reward, suggesting deficiencies in approach motivation. By middle school, this reward insensitivity is met with inadequate vagal modulation of cardiac output, suggesting additional deficiencies in emotion regulation. We propose a biosocial developmental model of conduct problems in which inherited impulsivity is amplified through social reinforcement of emotional lability. Implications for early intervention are discussed. ... Read more

Description:
Although respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is a commonly quantified physiological variable, the methods for quantification are not consistent. This manuscript questions the assumption that respiration frequency needs to be manipulated or monitored to generate an accurate measure of RSA amplitude. A review of recent papers is presented that contrast RSA amplitude with measures that use respiratory parameters to adjust RSA amplitude. In addition, data from two studies are presented to evaluate empirically both the relation between RSA amplitude and respiration frequency and the covariation between RSA frequency and respiration frequency. The literature review demonstrates similar findings between both classes of measures. The first study demonstrates, during spontaneous breathing without task demands, that there is no relation between respiration frequency and RSA amplitude and that respiration frequency can be accurately derived from the heart period spectrum (i.e., frequency of RSA). The second study demonstrates that respiration frequency is unaffected by atropine dose, a manipulation that systematically mediates the amplitude of RSA, and that the tight linkage between the RSA frequency and respiration frequency is unaffected by atropine. The research shows that the amplitude of RSA is not affected by respiration frequency under either baseline conditions or vagal manipulation via atropine injection. Respiration frequency is therefore unlikely to be a concern under these conditions. Research examining conditions that produce (causal) deviations from the intrinsic relation between respiratory parameters and the amplitude of RSA combined with appropriate statistical procedures for understanding these deviations are necessary. ... Product Description
In psychology, biological psychology or psychobiology is the application of the principles of biology to the study of mental processes and behaviour. A psychobiologist, for instance, may compare the imprinting behaviour in goslings to the early attachment behaviour in human infants and construct theory around these two phenomena. Biological psychologists may often be interested in measuring some biological variable, e.g. an anatomical, physiological, or genetic variable, in an attempt to relate it quantitatively or qualitatively to a psychological or behavioural variable; and thus, contribute to evidence based practice. Biopsychology is another synonym for biological psychology. This book presents the latest research in the field. ... Read more
