4-0 out of 5 stars Text Book
Sender was very prompt and kind, offered to overnight book due to scheduling conflicts. only problem was that after dropping book once on floor, cover fell off. However, still works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great transaction
The book was used when I bought it but in great shape and I received it before it was due. Super all around!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read
I am currently using this book for a course on psychological disorders of childhood. If you want to save $100+ by purchasing the third edition vs. the fourth edition... go for it!Hardly any changes have been made between the two editions. It's an interesting read - boring at times, but overall, it keeps my attention. They're short chapters (30-40 pages each), but they're full of information.

4-0 out of 5 stars International version
I got the international version, because I wanted a soft cover (it's lighter and easier to carry through the marathon around champus).I'm rather happy with it, it appears to be pretty much identical to the U.S. version (which is much more expensive as well).Just the colors are a bit dull (not sure if the U.S. version is like that, too).

1-0 out of 5 stars fourth edition !?Already??
Some advice: I have the third edition. It's a useful introductory text. It was published in August 2006, 24 months before the fourth. Way too soon for a new edition. Save your money and buy the third. You'll do fine. ... Read more

Product Description
If you are the parent of one of the millions of children with worry and anxiety: help is on the way. Anxiety is the number one mental health challenge facing our children today.Fortunately, there is good news for these kids and the parents who suffer along with them - anxiety disorders are also the most treatable mental health condition. With the powerful cognitive-behavioral treatments now available, there has never been more hope for anxious children's bright future.

Treatment is not about trying to cajole or talk kids out of their fears; it's about teaching them to see worry as a problem to be solved. Translating cutting-edge techniques into down-to-earth, empathic, user-friendly steps, Freeing Your Child from Anxiety equips parents, teachers and therapists with the information they need to recognize the red flags of anxiety in children and how they can systematically overcome the obstacles that anxiety imposes.

Empowering and insightful, Freeing Your Child from Anxiety, gives children - from preschool to high school - the action plan and the tools to take charge, unplug from anxiety, and plug into sound, realistic thinking. Learning the lessons from parents, children can reduce anxiety and even prevent anxiety disorders from taking hold.

Part One includes a primer on causes and mechanisms of transmission of anxiety messages in the brain - the how, when and where of seeking help for your child - achapter on the worry tricks the brain can play, and finally the five step 'Master Plan' for overcoming anxiety.

Part Two goes in depth, with separate chapters for each anxiety subtype: panic, separation anxiety, social anxiety, generalized worry, phobias, trauma, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Also included is a chapter on habit behaviors and conditions which are typically exacerbated by stress, tics and trichotillomania.

Part Three expands the focus to anxious children at school, and with friends and siblings.Because nighttime can be a very anxious time, a chapter on managing nighttime fears and sleep difficulties is included.

Anxious children are especially sensitive to real life stress such as coping with illness, death, crime, and terrorism. Strategies for how to constructively discuss these difficult topics are included in a separate chapter. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good background info but not good as a "how-to" guide for parents
This is a great general book on all types of anxiety, if you want to understand someone's anxiety or your own. As a parent, it didn't really help me to help my 9 year old. In contrast, the workbook called "What to Do When you Worry Too Much" by Dawn Huebner is easily understood by kids and parents, and we were able to start working on anxiety issues right away. It uses the same techniques that are found in this book, but helps you to apply them. I also like Anxiety Free Kids by Zucker, which uses the same techniques but goes into a little more detail. But we started with Huebner's book--easy to understand and apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't recommend it more
As both a psychologist and mom, I cannot say enough about this book.It is written in a way that is very easy to understand, yet the concepts presented are solid as a rock.Dr. Chansky trusts that parents are smart enough to help their own children with their anxiety, and she gives them the tools to do it.You can ABSOLUTELY make a difference in your anxious child's life by reading this book and teaching your child how to manage their "worry brain."

4-0 out of 5 stars Recomended my my counselor
This book is written for children with severe anxiety. Even so, I was able to learn practical steps to use with my child that is afraid of the dark.Just skim over the parts that don't apply to your situation and I'm sure you will find good advice for you andyour child.Be patient when reading this book, because it is written to help handle soooooooooooooo many different types of fears.Just remember you can skip over parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
A great resource for parents, friends, and educators working with children.A good description of anxiety, its many forms, and how to be proactive in helping our kids live happier lives with anxiety.

2-0 out of 5 stars Child Paychology: A Contemporary View Point
the book appeared fine on the outside but there was water damage to many pages and personal markings and script from the previous owner throughout the book. The delivery time was excellent!

1-0 out of 5 stars Item was never shipped.
The item from this seller was never shipped.I have sent multiple messages, none of which were returned.I would at the very least, appreciate a confirmation that my order has been cancelled.I ended up purchasing the book at my college book store, since I needed it for the first week of class.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Difficult Read
I have this book as the assigned textbook for an undergrad Child Psychology class. It is a chore getting through each chapter. I love to read but I can't seem to keep my focus and attention on this book. I want to be doing anything and everything but reading it. The material is highly dense. The book spends most of its time quoting study after study after study after study. It's like a 581 page research paper. My major isn't even Psychology, I am taking the class as an elective and just want to get down to brass tacks. I don't need to be regaled with literally over TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED different studies to prove the point (56 pages of references containing approximately 45 studies per page). I wouldn't be taking the class if I wasn't prepared to believe the textbook. Take the facts and organize them and write it all up in a readable way. That's the job of a textbook. All the research study examples described by this book on every page just clutter things. Too many examples obscure the point.
I suppose this book would be perfectly suited for a graduate level class, but not undergrad. If your preferred institution of higher learning requires this book for an undergrad Child Development class, find a different class to take if at all possible. It's that bad. Trust me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A SUMMARY OVERVIEW OF THE WORK OF PIAGET AND INHELDER
Jean Piaget (1896-1980) was a Swiss developmental psychologist known for his epistemological studies with children. His theory of cognitive development and epistemological view are known as "genetic epistemology". Bärbel Inhelder (1913-1997) was a Swiss developmental psychologist; she was probably Piaget's most well-known co-worker.

The authors state in the Preface, "In this volume we have tried to present, as briefly and as clearly as possible , a synthesis, or summing up. of our work in child psychology. A book such as this seemed to us particularly desirable since our published studies have been spread out over a number of volumes, some of them quite lengthy and some of them fairly difficult to read. This little book, of course, is not meant to be a substitute for reading the other volumes. But it represents, we believe, a useful introduction to the questions we have studied and will enable the reader to gain an adequate understanding of what we have learned in our investigations."

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"(O)ne might be tempted to consider the expressions 'child psychology' and 'genetic psychology' to be synonymous, but there is an important distinction between them: Whereas child psychology deals with the child for his own sake and does not consider his eventual development into an adult, we tend today to use the term 'genetic psychology' to refer to the study of the developmental processes that underlie the mental functions studied in general psychology."
"There is certainly such a thing as a sensori-motor intelligence, but it is very difficult to specify the exact moment when it appears."
"It is the random ("one-to-one") correspondences that lead to number, for they already imply numerical unity. Number must still be explained genetically, however; otherwise a vicious circle results."
"It is highly probable, then, that the social exchanges characteristic of the preoperatory level are preoperative; that is, at once social from the point of view of the subject and centered upon the child and his own activity from the point of view of the observer."
"Each new mental structure, by integrating the preceding ones, succeeds both in partly liberating the individual from his past and in inaugurating new activities which at the formal operatory level are mainly oriented toward the future."

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a textbook.

Great visuals, easy to read text, I mean it's a textbook. Overall it's great, but I didn't buy it for anything other than to have to get it for class.

I just skimmed over the page when making this purchase for my developmental psychology course. When it arrived I was disappointed to find that it was just a stack of loose paper.I decided that I would manage, but when I tried to put the pages into a notebook, I found that some of the holes were torn.I contacted Amazon and returned the item.I am in the process of getting my full refund.Though the item did not meet my standards, Amazon responded quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully well-written
This is an awesome book. It's well-written in everyday language that's easy to understand, has tons of interesting pictures and "boxes" (applications of the concepts to real life), and you can start reading anywhere in the book and be able to understand the concepts. In other words, you can jump into the book anywhere; you don't need to read it in order. If you're taking a psych class (even one that doesn't require this textbook), this is a great supplement, and even has great self-quizzes at the ends of the chapters, along with the answers in the back. The book was in great condition, as described.
But i was really upset with the shipping.
I ordered with one-click and that caused the book to be mailed to my home adress in AZ, but when i asked to have the book shipped to NV where i was actually taking an online course the company refused to. I had paid priority since my class begun. THey said they can only ship to the address provided by Amazon.
So not only did i pay priority for quick shipment on a book that was over $100 but i also ended up paying overnight shipping and wasting another 2-3 days because they couldny simply change the address to where the book was being shipped. How lame!

Product Description

The second edition of Counseling, Psychology, and Children takes a multidimensional four-part approach to counseling children. This approach: 1) capitalizes on the relationships children build with parents, teachers, and other adults; 2) looks at children's developmental processes; 3) examines multicultural influences upon them; and 4) takes into consideration the variety of intervention models available. Four chapters examine four major approaches to child therapy: psychodynamic, child-centered, behavioral/cognitive-behavioral, and family systems. In the final synthesizing chapter, the author draws upon his experience as therapist and teacher to bring everything together through a case study that shows his multidimensional approach in action. This book covers the use of play as a therapeutic technique and emphasizes thinking outside the box of standard therapy. It encourages future counselors to view treatment as the culmination of education/developmental, preventive, and remedial interventions. For professionals in the field of counseling children.

Hope and Healing for Children
Hurt by Addiction in the Family

'I have spent my adult life in the company of children who have been my teachers. We got to know each other because someone in each child's life was addicted to alcohol or other drugs.

For thirty years I have had a front-row seat in group watching, learning, and helping these youngest victims of addicted families, children who live with a legacy that can break hearts and destroy souls--one they certainly did not choose. They arrive carrying secrets, confusion, and pain. But almost all find their voice. These children can and do heal.'

Understanding Addiction and Recovery Through a Child's Eyes shares the poignant and profound healing journeys of children who have found their voice and reclaimed their sense of self-worth. Each story reminds us that children have a unique way of viewing the world and shows how, with help, they can build upon strengths and deepen their resilience in spite of living in the shadow of addiction. In addition to the life-affirming stories, esteemed children's counselor Jerry Moe reveals how the healing process transcends the children and has a dramatic impact on the entire family system--especially their parents, giving them a new, deeper commitment to break the multigenerational legacy of addiction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Twenty Studies...
This book is written very well, Dr. Dixon is an awesome teacher. If you're not into the big, long, scientific terms, he does it right. Puts everyhting into perpective by joking around (on paper!) and giving personal experiences to help understand. Every chapter is a different study, and there's a Summary, Conclusion, and Discussion questions section at the end. It's so much easier than reading through every study written by the experimenter. The studies are summarized well, and like I said, they're a whole lot easier to read. Good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly suggest this as an intro
I'm a developmental psychologist teaching at University of Washington in Tacoma.I've used this book as a resource for my students who want to do a directed reading with me.I find that it is a very useful resource to introduce the reader to seminal research in child psychology and it is written at a level that is perfect for someone who isn't very proficient at reading scientfic literature.I highly suggest this book to those who want a good overview of the fundamental theories of child psychology.Though, I have to say that I wish it would have tried to give more credit to the philosophy of behaviorism which is crucial to our understanding of child psychology. ... At what point do you seek professional help when a child is acting, by his parent's standards, weird? "Understanding Your Child's Puzzling Behavior: A Guide for Parents of Children with Behavioral, Social, and Learning Challenges" is a parent's guide to understanding a child's strange behavior and whether they should intervene or it is simply another kind of normal. Suggesting that parents never go for short term solutions, how to look at why the child acts the way they act, and when is the line to seek psychiatric assistance? 5-0 out of 5 stars A bright light...
Trying to find your way through the myriad of advice about how to parent your child can be overwhelming on the best of days. The actual child can get lost in all of the ideas/philosophies/beliefs. That truth is amplified if your child has any sort of behavior that seems to be outside of the "norm".Dr. Curtis guides parents in an honest, nonjudgmental way toward the avenues which can best help them and ultimately, most importantly, help the child get the support he/she needs. His assurance that positive progress can be made is a gift. That these are not "problem" children who have something wrong with them... a message those of us with atypical children are confronted with all too often, but that they are children who merit more support, understanding and sensitivity.Dr. Curtis knows that children with puzzling behavior operate within a family, and that the parents, who love these kids more than anything and are trying to help them to the best of their ability, need guidance and support too.His holistic approach is truly a relief to those of us who deal daily with the beauty, challenge, heartbreak and joy of raising these unique little beings.

Product Description

Children's drawings are intriguing. Why, for example, do children draw people with arms sticking out of the side of their heads?Recent research in the study of children's art suggests that these apparent oddities are not just random mistakes, but reflect children's orderly and often thoughful attempts at pictorial representation.

This concise book reviews psychological theories of children's drawings and their relation to emotional and cognitive development.Long-established assumptions that "children draw what they know," or that drawings are expressions of emotional experience or unconscious wishes, are critically appraised.

Unlike many specialized works, this book does not present just one approach to the exclusion of others, but attempts a dispassionate review of all major theories and aspects of this fascinating subject.Organized around a series of simple questions about children's drawings, the book covers material from philosophy, perception studies, clinical psychology, art, and aesthetics as well as from child development and cognitive psychology.

I may sound over-enthusiastic but... I could not be more pleasantly surprised!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Parenting book ever
I have read atleat a dozen parenting books .
This one really stands out because it is mostly about why parents react in a particular way - that is how our own childhood experiences control the way we react to ourkids and how to get hold of our legacy parenting .

A must read for every parent who wants the best for their kids.

It is also very HELPFUL in deciding the right age for day care ,preschool and a bible for working moms .

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
I am not a professional in the field of Psychology.I am a parent that noticed more than a few reflections of sadness in my childs eyes. It occured to me that she may be experiencing depression or just feeling overwhelmed with the preteen issues that faced her.Considering that optimism is so very important, I decided to understand more about optimism, it's beginnings, and how to achieve it more regularly. In reading the book, I now consider how to contribute to an optimistic outcome, rather than expecting that optimism should happen on it's own.
That was a very powerful awakening.

5-0 out of 5 stars AHighly Recommended Book for Children of ALL Ages !
Finally, an easy to read book that approaches child rearing with love, compassion and humanity in a straight forward and honest manner.Teaches how to be and not to be with every turn of the page.So informative and inspiring is "Raising An Optiministic Child" with it's easy to read format, with it's ample examples and it's encouraging approach. It's not only a guide book for child rearing but a book which inspires, gives hope and guidance and reminds us of how we all need to treat children and each other as well as how we all would like to be treated regardless of AGE!A must have book in every home library and in everyone's reading and learning repertoire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Latest and Greatest Wisdom
"Raising an Optimistic Child" has captured the latest and greatest of parenting wisdoms, but that's not all.As a child therapist of 3-5 year olds and a daycare provider of toddlers, I am pleased to say that it has affirmed my intuitions and greatly informed my practice, with children and adults alike.

This book has reminded me once again of the paramount importance of our earliest years, and the caretaking relationships that surround them, in predisposing us to mood disorders later in life. It is a thorough compilation of the key ingredients that make for a healthy human, combining the most up-to-date psychological research, together with all-too-undereferenced ancient wisdoms and some refreshing new "ah-hah's."

Dare I say it? I agree wholeheartedly with most, if not all, of the book, including the authors' de-pathologizing of children and their sensitive examination of the sticky subjects of drugs and over-diagnosed ADD/ADHD.

While very easy to read, the excellent guidance may not be so easy to do. At least the best information is nearly all in one place, as is the optimism to "have a go" at it.

I am so glad I read this book. I can't recommend it highly enough - to parents, teachers, childcare providers, therapists, couples, and adults who struggle with depression and/or other psychological challenges or know someone who does. In short, everyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for counsellors and therapists - not only child & family therapists
The editors of this book present a most holistic view to understanding child and adolescent development - a view that would be impossible to achieve if viewed from one science/perspective alone. They present a scientific study of development in the biological, cognitive, linguistic, social, cultural, moral, personality, emotional, and aesthetic domains as well as exploring an extensive range of contempory research topics including the significance of diversity in development etc. The editors also present up to date neuroscience information which all together combines to make what I experienced as a fascinating and most valuable gaining of knowledge and understanding. ...
