Book Description
As charming performers who skillfully reflect their parents expectations, far too many children grow into adults driven to greater and greater achievements by an underlying sense of worthlessness. Never allowed to express their true feelings, and having lost touch with their true selves, they act out their repressed feelings with episodes of depression and compulsive behavior. They in turn inflict the same legacy of repression on their own children.

This poignant and thought-provoking book shows how narcissistic parents form and deform the lives of their children. The Drama of the Gifted Child is the first step toward helping readers reclaim their lives by discovering their own needs and their own truth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars always there
I read this book for the first time when it was first published and it had a great impact on me and on understanding how I had grown. It was painful but at the same time healing. I continue reading it and it continues having those characteristics. Thanks

4-0 out of 5 stars Another tiny view in the quest of freedom from self
Dr. Alice Miller takes us on a journey from her subtley unique perspective, of the thoughts and programs that enslave us all. This easy to read book sheds much needed light on the crippling mindsets we inherit from our upbringing. These mindsets lead to a bewildering array of behaviors and automatic responces that baffle, hurt and enslave us andthe ones closest to us. A good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding the true self and then becoming it

This book is written with very deep insight, compassion, eloquence, clarity and power. Alice Miller speaks of the vital importance for us to discover our own personal truth that puts us in touch with our true self. As Ms. Miller states it can be very painful to discover our real feelings since many of us have repressed hurt feelings from childhood trauma that we have buried and we have hid these feelings not only from our parents but from ourselves as well.

What I have learned from this remarkable book is that we hide these feelings from our parents so they will `love' us, but it's not our true self that they love since it is these hidden feelings that are the manifestations of who we really are. In its place we give our parents an image of ourselves so as to make them happy. This fulfills their needs but we hide our own since we fear that the expression of our own needs will lead to parental rejection and correspondingly to a loss of their love.

When we hide and suppress these childhood unacknowledged needs then the basis of all our future relationships will be determined by these unrequited needs and they become the unconscious motivations that drive us throughout our adult lives.

It is only by getting in touch with these lost needs that we can begin to discover those missing parts of ourselves. This is just the beginning to true "self discovery" that is, it is the beginning to discovering and becoming who we truly are so that, eventually, we can become who we are truly destined to be.

A fine book indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books Ever Written
This is one of the best books ever written and one of the most powerful tools for one's self-discovery, to be free from narcissism. Miller has provided strong insights into this book, which encouraged and forced us to face the truth from our childhood, and why we hid our true selves as children.

We are all living in a narcissist society, and we have learned our narcissist traits to some degree. For us to get rid of these traits, we must seek to be free from the deadly emotional influences that shaped our lives. This book is one of the keys for which we will acquire to be free.

I would strongly recommend "The Drama of the Gifted Child" for those who seek for the truth about themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Critically important
I cannot stress enough how important this book is if one is at all interested in truly understanding the genesis and repair of childhood emotional damage, in many forms.

With stunning insight Alice Miller has helped me personally understand more about my own inner dynamics than I could have ever understood had I not found her work.Read it - it will change your life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!
I have been a therapeutic foster parent for 7 years. This is one of my favorite books to share with the children who come into my home. The storyline gives children a safe way to explore all the feelings and behaviors they experience. It has also been a wonderful tool for showing the other children in the home how and why some children behave like they do. I highly recommend this book to any parent!

Thx for an excellent contribution to the field of child development and in strategies for reducing the epidemic of child maltreatment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Child abuse. Implications for child development
This is the second edition of a small, but important book on the implications of child abuse for child development and psychopathology. It is written by David A Wolfe, professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. He has been very active in the field of child abuse and neglect with several books to his name, like ýChildren of battered womený, ýPreventing physical and emotional abuse of childrený, ýAlternatives to violenceý and ýAbnormal child psychologyý. This book is part of the Sage Series on ýDevelopmental Clinical Psychology and Psychiatryý prepared by experts in clinical child psychiatry, psychology, development and related disciplines. The focus is on the diagnosis, assesment, treatment and prevention of problems in developmental psychopathology that arise in the period from infancy through adolescence. The book is devided into six chapters: What is child maltreatment ?, Normal and abnormal child rearing patterns, A developmental perspective of the abused child, Unraveling the causes with theory, background and multidimentional influences and the last chapter on Prevention and treatment strategies. Since the first edition of this book (1987) there has been an explosion in child abuse research and therefore also more knowledge and background to understand the mechanisms involved. This is taken into account in this book, but also the fact that the author in the meantime had three children of his own has made this book very important for professionals working with abused and neglected children. ... Book Description
In Childhood Disorders, Philip C. Kendall provides an up-to-date summary of the current information about the psychological disorders of childhood - their causes, nature and course - together with discussion and evaluation of the major models that guide psychological thinking about the disorders. Drawing on the research literature and case studies from his own clinical work, Kendall describes each of the major childhood disorders. He goes on to give a detailed consideration of the criteria used to make the diagnoses, a presentation of the latest research findings on the nature of the disorder, and an overview of the methods used and evaluations conducted for the treatment of the disorders.
Throughout, the range of normal behavioural variations is set as the backdrop against which to make judgements about psychological disorders, and the role of the family in the onset and course of psychological difficulties is explored. Within the coverage of the treatments of childhood disorders, emphasis is placed upon those treatments that have been empirically evaluated and found to be effective in producing beneficial change for the children. In the end, a series of provocative questions are raised and the reader is asked to recognise and think about the personal and social implications of the decisions that we make regarding how we deal with the disorders of childhood. Childhood Disorders will provide an accessible, up-to-date introduction to the field for both students and professionals alike. ... Read more

Book Description

Until now, evolutionary psychologists have focused largely on understanding adult behavior, giving little sustained attention to childhood. Developmental psychologists, for their part, have been wary of the perceived genetic determinism of evolutionary thinking. This important volume brings together an array of prominent developmental scientists whose work is explicitly driven by evolutionary concerns. Presenting sophisticated new models for understanding gene-environment interactions, the authors demonstrate how evolutionary knowledge can enhance our understanding of key aspects of cognitive, social, and personality development. Tightly edited chapters examine how different developmental mechanisms have evolved and what role they play in children's functioning and their adaptation to adult life. Essential topics covered include parent-child relationships, aggression, puberty, infant perception and cognition, memory, language, and more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and informative reading
Must read if you want to feel empowered about helping your child get all the resources he/she needs in the school and in the community.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
Of all the ADHD books I have read, about 8 at this point, I have learned the most from this one.It is practical, and has lots of tips.I now have a binder that I use that I take with me to all of my child's meetings, and to my visits with the Sammi's doctor. My book is almost completely marked up, and in the margins of about every 2nd or 3rd page, there is an underline, or a "do this."

IF YOU WANT THE BEST FOR YOUR CHILD WITH ADHD, AND WANT TO TAKE CHARGE OF HIS FUTURE, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.TOMAS

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book will walk you through the process of getting your child evaluated and the steps needed to insure your child gets the best schooling that is available. It will cover your rights as a parent and how to work together with the school system. Prior to getting this book, I had already taken the necessary steps and was armed with lots of knowledge on the subject but I still learned a lot from reading it.If you're new to ADHD or not sure of what your entitlements are, this book is a must have.Worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT Book, but Long title
I saw this book on the shelf at Barnes and Noble, but passed it up with its long title. My bookclub friend who also has a boy with ADD told me it was "the best", so I went back and got it.I have now read it cover-to-cover, made lots of marks in the margins, flagging the sections that are right on the mark for me.

The book is like a how-to guide, giving problem-solving tips in each of the areas that I've been challenged by: getting the school system to work with me, and to give my 9-year old son additional resources (the letters on how to request additional help from the school were fantastic!), making a book to help me organize all of the records; helping him find friends, and even working with my boss, who had given me a hard time for missing work for Martin's medical appointments.

The tips and examples from other parents from other parents like me were VERY good, and for the first time in the last 3 years since his diagnosis, I am hopeful that we're going to make it, seeing how other parents have done it.

Thank YOU, Dr. Jensen!!

Moms and dads, buy, beg, borrow, or steal this book.I've read about 12 books now, but this was the one I needed from three years ago. Lehcy

Book Description

This 32nd volume of the Minnesota Symposium on Child Psychology celebrates the 75th anniversary of the University of Minnesota's Institute of Child Development. All eight essays are devoted to developmental science, its history, and current status. Taken together, the chapters in this book show how the history of science connects past and future, how it gives the individual investigator an identity and sense of purpose, how contemporary studies occur within larger traditions, and how institutions like the Institute of Child Development, constitute cultural traditions of their own.

Collectively, these essays show that the past explains a great deal--whether we want to know about the processes through which the child acquires symbolic thought or whether we want to know how and why, during the last century, a few enduring centers were established for the scientific study of children and adolescents. Reading these essays, one obtains a sense of how the past becomes evidence, how it forms models for the way we think, and how intellectual challenges arise.

Book Description

Child psychotherapy is in a state of transition. On the one hand, pretend play is a major tool of therapists who work with children. On the other, a mounting chorus of critics claims that play therapy lacks demonstrated treatment efficacy. These complaints are not invalid. Clinical research has only begun.

Extensive studies by developmental researchers have, however, strongly supported the importance of play for children. Much knowledge is being accumulated about the ways in which play is involved in the development of cognitive, affective, and personality processes that are crucial for adaptive functioning. However, there has been a yawning gap between research findings and useful suggestions for practitioners.

Play in Child Development and Psychotherapy represents the first effort to bridge the gap and place play therapy on a firmer empirical foundation. Sandra Russ applies sophisticated contemporary understanding of the role of play in child development to the work of mental health professionals who are trying to design intervention and prevention programs that can be empirically evaluated. Never losing sight of the complex problems that face child therapists, she integrates clinical and developmental research and theory into a comprehensive, up-to-date review of current approaches to conceptualizing play and to doing both therapeutic play work with children and the assessment that necessarily precedes and accompanies it.

Book Description
John Taylor, Ph.D. is nationally known for his seminars on this subject. He is a clinical psychologist who lives and practices in Salem, Oregon. For many years he wrote an award-winning column on family relationships and mental health for The Oregon Statesman. He is the author of several books, including the highly praised The Hyperactive Child and the Family.
Helping Your Hyperactive/Attention Deficit Child
is by far the most comprehensive book on the subject of hyperactivity. Most books take a one-sided approach, be it nutritional, psychological, or medical. Dr. Taylor, however, believes thathyperactive activity/attention deficit disorder requires using all the tools from every method available to achieve the best results for the child. This book reflects this multi-dimensional approach. Among the areas covered are:How to determine if your child has hyperactivity/attention deficit disorder; (includes the Taylor Hyperactivity Screening Checklist)
Approaches to treatment, including medical, nutritional, and drug therapy

5-0 out of 5 stars Helping Your Hyperactive ADD Child
There is just not enough good that I can say about Dr. Taylor's book.It literally saved my sanity when my daughter was diagnosed with ADD.Dr Taylor gives short answers to the real world problems associated with this disorder. It was as if I had found a care and feeding manual for this wonderful little girl who was just too much for me, and everybody else.I owe so much to Dr Taylor and I would highly recommend his book to anyone considering buying it.Even if your child has not been diagnosed, the practical suggestions will work for any child.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book offers real help for parents
As the parent of a child with ADHD, I've read a lot of books on the subject and on related conditions.I've investigated many different approaches and therapies. This one book could have replaced my years of research.Dr. Taylor gives the reader a clear, understandable description of why these kids behave the way they do, and of the major options for helping them.

Unlike many other authors, Taylor has dealt with ADHD as a parent, as well as a professional. He is able to see these challenges from the parent's perspective, and his compassion comes across clearly. This is a welcome change for parents who are very tired of being blamed for things over which they have little control. The author's bio notes that he has over 30 years of successful experience in helping families of these challenging kids...and it shows!

The book has a user-friendly approach that can be understood by the layman, but it also provides impressive documentation to support the science. After you finish reading it, I would encourage any parent to share it with their child's teacher.Or, better yet, donate a copy to the school for all the teachers to use.

Book Description

Millions of parents are facing whether to medicate their children for psychiatric disorders—from depression to ADHD to bipolar disorder. Now physician and psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth Roberts explains the risks and benefits of medicating and not medicating children and demystifies and simplifies the process of separating psychiatric illness from the other more common behavioral patterns in children, particularly defiance, or willfulness.

Dr. Roberts clearly explains what she discusses every day with the parents of the hundreds of children she treats. How is a parent to know which behaviors are bio-chemical and which are simply the result of willfulness? When should a parent seek a child psychiatrist's help in medicating their child? How can you find a doctor you can trust? When is it more appropriate to use behavioral techniques? Roberts' insight will be invaluable in helping families wade through all the contradictory recommendations that the media, the Internet, teachers, relatives, friends and neighbors, and nonspecialist doctors provide.

5-0 out of 5 stars A TOOL FOR PARENTS
Easy to use and gave me all the information I needed in a format that was practical. In a letter to my child's pediatrician, I was objecting to my child's medications and the book gave me the facts I needed to clearly make my points with the doctor. My child was being administered amphetamine-class drugs for what was considered ADHD-type behavior at school. These drugs were given on a "diagnostic" basis but there seemed to be no agreement as to whether the amphetamines were successful with my son or not and the doctor's idea was to just increase the amphetamines or change the times of day the drug was administered. However, with the help of Dr. Roberts' book, I was able to clearly express to the doctor and my child's school the fact that my son's objectionable behaviors in school are all listed as side effects of the amphetamines and my child's inability to focus on his studies has long been surpassed by these more troubling behaviors such as irritation, violent outbursts, and depression. Furthermore, the book gave me information about markers for ADHD and I was able to challenge our doctor's assumption that my child has ADHD at all. - Posted for CSC, New York City

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Information on meds
This book is a no-nonsense, direct, and realistic summary of the myriad of childhood psychological disorders and the medication used to treat them. It is relatively short and gets right to the point (thank you). She is rightfully critical of the tendency for hasty diagnoses, and medicating children without exploring all aspects of the problem. She uses examples from her practice, lists typical symptoms for each disorder, available medication, and also details other possibilities to consider. She stresses that medications treat symptoms and not the particular diagnosed disorder; the reason being that most psychological disorders have overlapping symptoms, and so a label of Bipolar, for example, may require medications typically prescribed for ADD or depression in addition to a mood stabilizer. At the end of the book she addresses parenting styles and how they can affect a child's behavior. She comes down hard of permissive parenting styles, and I agree that it can lead to out-of-control behavior; however, she leans heavily toward authoritarian approaches, which in my opinion can lead to other, different problems that are no less challenging. Aside from the parenting advice, I highly recommend this book to anyone considering medicating their child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal resource for parents coping with their children's behavioral problems
Before you get caught up in the wild success stories of the next miracle drug, or start diagnosing your child based on posts you have read on the Internet, please read this book!

Dr. Roberts does an excellent job of cutting through all the hype surrounding children's psychiatric medications and popular diagnosis' and really educates the reader on a broad range of issues that may be affecting your child. She does a great job explaining how many different factors may have an effect on your child's behavior and one drug that treats one symptom is rarely the answer to a long term solution to dealing with your child's diagnosis.

Dr. Roberts educates the reader on everything from choosing a doctor (and the right type of doctor) for your child, to properly communicating with the doctor, to the many diagnoses your child may receive, to the types of drugs and their side effects that may be prescribed and the many other actions you as a parent can take to improve your child's chance of success.

The book does a great job of instilling the idea that you, as the parent, are your child's number one advocate and are solely responsible for making the final decisions regarding your child's health. This is not a responsibility to be taken lightly and without educating yourself properly with the help of books like this! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Parents need to know how to discipline w/o spanking...
My parents used corporal punishment. Because of this, I vowed never to spank my children. I didn't know how to discipline, though - what to do IN PLACE of spanking. My daughter is now almost 30 and the mother of my beautiful 3 year old granddaughter. My daughter graduated fromcollege, was an honor student praised by all her teachers throughout school, she never got into trouble the law, or misbehaved beyond giving me a bit of "normal teenage attitude".And she wasn't spanked! My son is 21, mentally handicapped, a well behaved, loving adult with a great sense of humor. Spanking is useless with a special needs child.
To the reviewer between 8 & 13 who wrote "it's ridiculous not to spank", my heart breaks for you. You're being lied to if someone has told you that spanking is necessary.
The author doesn't suggest that parents NOT discipline their children. What he HAS written is that there are other methods of discipline besides spanking. And, BTW, the author has an advanced education and clinical studies to support his work.Bryan's wife

1-0 out of 5 stars This guy needs to be scared at what he's saying.
This guy is saying not to spank kids. That's ridiculous. In my opinion, spanking kids is right. Not hitting. Not beating. Spanking. Not as hard as you can. But spanking nontheless. I am outraged at this guy, who obviously never even CONSIDERED, the slightest POSSIBILITY that the other side might be right. I hope he knows what he's doing: his kids, and kids that he knew, that he said not to discipline, and that he didn't discipline, may become the adults who shrug and either throw him into the nursing home or go the path of enuthasia. Not trying to be cruel, but that's a warning: If we don't train kids now, actively and effectively, then we are doomed.
And BTW, this is coming from someone who is older than eight and younger than thirteen. I believe this butts heads with the Truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.
I have to say that this book is very well written.I feel that everyone should read this book, although I know some would probably never even consider reading a book like this.I didn't believe in spankings before I read this book, but now I don't feel so left out. Everyone I know spanks their kids and I am the "odd ball".I get criticized alot, but this book has made me feel alot better about who I am as a parent and a person. The author did a good job explaining why he believes the way he does and I have to give him credit. He is very intelligent and brave.

5-0 out of 5 stars stop spanking kids
I love this book it is teaching parents not to spank their kids. I mean pick on someone your own size. beating up on little people means your a real coward. Children have rights to they are human beings. I don't care what the bible says.

Book Description

Growing numbers of young peoplesome 10% to 20% of school-age populationshave mental health problems requiring intervention, and current policy initiatives identify evidence-based therapies as the most effective and relevant forms of treatment. By reviewing evidence-based treatments (EBTs) across a wide spectrum of conditions, the Handbook of Evidence-Based Therapies for Children and Adolescents: Bridging Science and Practice closes the gaps between childrens needs and services as well as those between research, training, and practice,

Several EBT options, both proved and promising, are offered for each covered disorder and are bolstered by case examples, tables, and reference lists. Features include chapters on implementation issues such as diversity, family treatment, assessment strategies, and community settings, and step-by-step guidance for the researcher looking to gather empirical support for therapies.

With comprehensive coverage provided by numerous leading experts in the field, this volume covers the broadest range of disorders over the widest pediatric-adolescent age range, including:

  • Behavioral disorders, ADHD, aggression, bullying.
  • Phobias, panic disorders, school refusal, and anxiety.
  • Autism and pervasive developmental disorders.
  • Depression, mood disorders, and suicidal behavior.
