5-0 out of 5 stars Great for psych majors
My professor advised me to get this book to help with getting ready for graduate school. It is a tremendous help. I recommend anyone who is a psychology major to buy this book! Like my professor told me "its worth its weight in gold!"

5-0 out of 5 stars SO HELPFUL!
I'm currently getting ready to apply for graduate schools in psychology and this book is incredibly helpful. My favorite part is the list of schools which include whether or not they give financial aid, what kind of programs (psy d, PhD, masters) and subprograms (neuropsychology, experimental, child psyc, etc) there are, and how much the program focuses on research vs clinical training. There's a ton of other useful information in it too. I use the book to find schools to look in to, and the book gives me their website so it's easy to find. Then I decide from there. But the book is incredibly useful as a starting point and I've only had it for a little while so I'm sure I'm yet to uncover many other wonderful uses for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have!!
This book is a FANTASTIC summary of all possible research that can be done on clinical/counseling psych grad programs. It has helped me tremendously in applying to schools. The book has helped me be more organized and less stressed, seeing that all of the important information/deciding factors of the various programs are right at my fingertips.Very helpful worksheets are included at the back of the book in order to compare your top schools/programs.I cannot say enough good things about this book!I would recommend it to anyone/everyone interested in attending clinical/counseling psych grad school or to anyone that has any type of interaction with potential students.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the playbook that everyone uses!
This book is INDISPENSABLE when applying to graduate programs in clinical and counseling psychology, and as others state, not just a bunch of program statistics. Sure, it has all the statistics you need to start narrowing down to schools that are a good fit, but it tells you so much more. I would bet that 90%+ of successful clinical Ph.D. students have either read or used this book in some manner, it is that useful and valuable (no I don't have data to back that up.) When you go on interviews for graduate school though it will be clear that everyone is playing from the same script, and for good reason, the successful candidate presents themselves in a manner that is professional and prepared. Having been through the application process twice, I would have fared better had I paid closer attention to some of what the authors stated, my second time through was very successful and I am in a great program. I don't think I would have made it without the information in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BUY
If you were to choose one book to help you apply to grad school, this is it. It's like sitting down with the world's best psychology advisor. It tells you how to play the game and win. I was extremely anxious about applying for grad school before, and now I feel very excited and prepared armed with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to Graduate School, BUY this..
It is an absolute must! Enough said..buy it and you will soon discover what I mean!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide
I bought this book to be introduced to the system of Americans Clinical and Counseling Psychology at all and, to get information regarding different psychol. programs, and the process of applying-enrolling into the Universities. The main part of this book dedicated to reports on individual Clinical and Counseling Psychology programs, which looks like list of Universities and their requirements and statistics like recommended courses, GRE and GPA means, % of student receiving, Research areas and so on..Book also contains a lot of tips and advices, like for example, interview's strategic, letters of Recommendation (with samples), format for Curriculum Vitae, even worksheets for choosing programs, for Assessing Program Criteria and for Making Final Choices..etc..A lot of links to the Internet-resourses, where you can find an additional information about accredited programs and so forth.. I found it really very useful.
The only one point which a little bit disapointed me (that's the only reason for 4-stars rating) - the lack information about Master's programms. So, this guide will be great for those, who plans to get PhD or PsyD. Or for undergraduate student, because it give the basic introducing information as well, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This is a very helpful book.If you're looking for a specific program or school this book probably has it.If you're just looking to see what schools are available with various counseling programs this is your book. The breakdown of what each school has to offer is incredible and it is organized in an easy to use way. Also, the first 1/4 or so of the book is a step by step guide for you to follow. From choosing a discipline to taking the GRE to choosing a school. It has contact numbers and web addresses for each school and statistics about each school.Very good book for the grad school shopper.

4-0 out of 5 stars PhD and PsyD coverage ONLY
This book is excellent if you're interested in PhD or PsyD programs in clinical and counseling psychology. However, be warned that it does not cover ANY information about masters programs. If you're looking for information on masters programs rather than PhD or PsyD, this book will not help you. I wish I could find a resource just like this but focused on masters programs!

This book is brilliant.A must have for the entire application and interview process!

4-0 out of 5 stars Insider's Guide to Grad. Programs in Clinical & Counseling Psych.
This book made the applying to grad school process far less painful. It allowed me to compare different programs so that I could narrow my choices down substantially. It was also an easy read, so it wasn't exhausting reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very insightful and helpful
This book has a lot of helpful information for looking for and applying to graduate schools for clinical or counseling psychology, Ph.Ds or Psy.Ds. It provides different perspectives on the degrees and careers so that readers have a better understanding of what they may be going into.

4-0 out of 5 stars read my review
I bought this in the beginning of my hunt for graduate school and it was a pretty good reality check. They don't tell you, "if you do what we tell you, you'll get into the school of your dreams". Instead they're pretty raw, as in, graduate school is very competitive and you might not get in when you first try.
On the other hand, I would have appreciated a little more of "you can do it" morale boosting.
Also, I'm not so sure how reliable their scales in the appendix are of just how "research oriented" or "practice oriented" each school's program is, but it is a nice feature.

5-0 out of 5 stars You need this.
As a university lecturer at three universities, I get plenty of questions about these things.I hear plenty of horror stories from students about faulty or non-existent mentoring in these areas. There is plenty of advice out there to be had from ignorant, indifferent, or hostile sources. A big problem is that many professors and staff in psychology departments at major universities don't have knowledge or interest in clinical and counseling psychology. They may be openly hostile to the entire field, or toward areas and programs they perceive as being too unscientific.Even among supportive mentors, there isn't enough time to mentor students on all these issues. For many professors, finding quality time with students sucks time from writing papers and chasing grants.Your best bet is to use this book to master the basics.Find a great mentor and use that person's time to fine tune your thinking and turbo-charge your applications.

My advice is to start here if you are serious about getting into grad school. Or, take a look at the APA's book, "Getting In", which is on the same topic.I haven't seen it, but I hear it is good, too.

And if you want your life as a grad student to go well at at the Big U, then make sure to consult the following classics: (Do this even if you aren't considering an academic career)

David Sternberg's "How to Complete and Survive a Dissertation."
Robert Sternberg's "Psychology 101 1/2: The Unspoken Rules for Success in Academia"

Another must read, for future academics:
Darley et al's "The Compleat Academic: A Career Guide"

And for future clinical and counseling psychologists:
Yalom's "The Gift of Therapy: An Open Letter to a New Generation of Therapists and Their Patients"

Get these other books.Do it.This stuff is worth its weight in gold. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful advice
This book provides extremely helpful advice for getting into a clinical psych graduate program. I found it to be the most informed and comprehensive tool I had during my search, application, and interview processes. The only point of contention for me is that it sometimes over-analyzes or over-emphasizes certain aspects of the process. So I didn't follow ALL of their advice, but I certainly followed a lot of it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good text for your grad prep toolbelt
This is a great book that looks at the professional potentials with different types of Psychology graduates paths, how to prepare, tips for application, and is just a great addition to the other books for Psychology career seeking students.(It is also a great complement to Graduate Programs in Psychology which provides a comprehensive list of nearly all programs for Psychology in undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programs.Get the GRE prep book by Kaplan, and you have a great trifecta.)

3-0 out of 5 stars This book has limited usefulness
This book was not at all useful to me, although it may be useful to some of you.

About a third of the book is taken up by information about different types of psychology programs such as clinical, counseling, biopsychology, and social work, and in helping you decide which of those is right for you. This is useful if you have only a general interest in psychology and want more information, but is not at all useful if you have already decided on a sub-discipline.

Another third of the book is taken up by instructions for applying to clinical and counseling programs. For instance, it suggests classes you should take and activities or clubs you should participate in.If you are already a senior, or have already gotten advising from psychology professors, this information will not be useful. They also give sample personal statements, which could be a helpful starting point if you have no idea how to write a personal statement. However, I think it would be just as effective to write you statement without the book and then ask one of your professors to read over it and give you feedback.

The last third of the book is taken up by information about specific programs.I only looked at the clinical ones, so I can't give any feedback on the info. about counseling programs. The book lists a series of research interests one might have, such as "mood disorders" and lists schools with faculty who have this research interests.I am interested in aging, especially alzheimer's disease.Using the book, I found programs that supposedly shared those intersts, but when I went to some of the school websites I could not find any listed faculty with those interests.Instead, I ended up googling my interest "aging" and "dementia" and using the advanced search function to restrict the search to domains ending in .edu.Using this method I was able to find plenty of schools to apply to.I suggest you save yourself the price of the book, and do the same.

Basically, this book can serve as either a first source of information about psychology careers, or as a poor substitute for advising from actual psychology professors.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Resource for Gaining Admission to Psychology Grad Programs
I bought this book last February when I decided that I wanted to change careers and pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. This book provides you with an excellent step-by-step guide on how to gain admission to your desired school - I've read a lot of these books now and this one is the best by far. It's an especially good resource for those who were not psychology undergraduates, like myself - the book tells you what classes to take to gain the knowledge necessary to transition to a psychology career, the level of research experience needed and feasible ways to obtain that experience, as well as estimations of the financial costs that you will inevitably incur during the application process. And most of this is just in Chapter 1. I will be first in line to buy the 2005/2006 edition-

1-0 out of 5 stars Who would believe this guy?
Would you believe this guy? He obviously has little insight into sexuality, because even after being caught with a rent boy, he claims to be heterosexual. His level of self-deception is astounding.

I'm just guessing here - but lying to yourself is probably not something Jesus would encourage.

1-0 out of 5 stars Read at your peril
IN a recent court case in Florida, Rekers testified that gays make bad parents. The judge found his arguments biased and lacking in any scientific research. This book is much of the same -- just talking points about how homosexuality is bad and that you can change it if you try really hard.
Apparently, Rekers didn't try very hard, and he admits he would be a very bad parent - he hired a gay male prostitute off of [...] for sexual massages. If he doens't believe his own words, why should you?

Editorial Review

Product Description
Understanding Research in Clinical and Counseling Psychology is a unique text because it is designed and written for the graduate students aspiring to careers in practice rather than in psychological science who are the vast majority in clinical and counseling programs.

To motivate readers to see the value of knowledge produced by research, the book opens with an actual case report that shows how research-generated strategies incorporated into treatment allowed a woman who formerly would have been considered so hopelessly incapacitated by obsessive-compulsive disorder as to require lifetime institutionalization if not neurosurgery to return to normal family and work life.

The first set of chapters introduces fundamental concepts of measurement, sampling, and validity.

The next set systematically presents the kinds of investigations most relevant to budding practitioners--group comparisons, correlations, single-subject designs, program evaluations, and meta-analyses. Each of these chapters concludes with a detailed example of a study in which students can see how the techniques described are actually employed.

The third set addresses enduring concerns--how to define and maintain ethical standards, how to do effective literature reviews and assess the quality of existing data, and how to collect and analyze data. It also addresses concerns that have emerged recently--how to distinguish and judge effective and efficacious treatments and how to contribute to research efforts as a private practitioner.

The issues involved in the often confusing effectiveness versus efficacy debate are illuminated with a clinically relevant case example. Descriptions of alternatives to conventional significance testing, such as "clinical significance" and "reliable change analyses" help students consider new ways in which they can impose rigor on their own research and practice activities.

Two final chapters examine the challenges of studying two special groups: children and older adults.

Throughout, the authors, all capable researchers who are also experienced practitioners, demonstrate the ways in which research is an essential foundation for effective and ethical practice. Students and instructors alike will welcome this reader-friendly book.
