Book Description
This fresh, new book takes a multidimensional four-part approach to counseling children. This approach: 1) capitalizes on the relationships children build with parents, teachers, and other adults; 2) looks at children's developmental processes; 3) examines multicultural influences upon them; and 4) takes into consideration the variety of intervention models available. Four chapters examine four major approaches to child therapy: psychodynamic, child-centered, behavioral/cognitive-behavioral, and family systems. In the final synthesizing chapter, the author draws upon his experience as therapist and teacher to bring everything together through a case study that shows his multidimensional approach in action. This book covers the use of play as a therapeutic technique and emphasizes thinking outside the box of standard therapy. It encourages future counselors to view treatment as the culmination of education/developmental, preventive, and remedial interventions. Book Description
WIth the ongoing pressures for psychologists to practice evidence-based care, and the requirement insurance carriers have both for treatment goals, measurement of outcomes, and a focus on brief therapy, functional analysis provides a framework for achieving all of the above. Having proven itself in treating behavioral problems in education, functional analysis is now being applied more broadly to behavioral and psychologial disorders.

In his 1996 book (Functional Analysis in Clinical Psychology, Wiley UK), Sturmey applied the functional behavioral approach to case formulation across a wide range of psychological disorders and behaviors. Since the publication of his book, no other volume has taken an explicit behavioral approach to case formulation. The changes that have occurred over the last 10 years in behavioral case formulation have been significant and substantial. They include (a) a large expansion of the range of problems addressed, such as ADHD, (b) a range of new verbal behavior therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapies, (c) increased area of activity in the area of autism spectrum disorders; (d) many publications in how to train professionals, staff and parents in behavioral technology, and (e) new assessment instruments and procedures.

*Makes theories of functional analysis accessible to a wide range of mental health professionals
*Reviews behavioral assessment methods and strategies for case formulation
*Offers readers a practical, organized, data-based means of understanding psychiatric conditions for intervening effectively and measuring positive change ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential and Very Useful
This book should be the first book read after a Life Coach finishes the basic training.Corporate America represents the motherlode for coaching since that is where the real money is. This book brings together in one place useful and understandable information to equip the coach reagardless of experience to completetly work with executives. There are many useful tools and strategies that can be "cookbooked" to the betterment of the client.

5-0 out of 5 stars Executive Coaching with Clarity and Practicality
"The Psychology of Executive Coaching" is a very useful book on executive coaching which suggest sensible and sensitive processes that should lead to successful outcomes.Bruce Peltier wrote a breathlessly intellectual book on executive coaching whilst retaining a centred approach to the research of his topic at hand. He expertly wove carefully placed threads of awareness into a coherent and comforting blanket of understanding and he uncovers truly helpful and practical applications.

The author's writing is rich and intricate. He draws on a variety of experts and research to come up with well thought out theories and pragmatic tips on their effective application. You will marvel at the fluidity with which he combines the concepts so as to make them completely accessible to everyone wishing to follow his reasoning throughout this important book.

This is a highly readable guidebook that provides a solid theoretical framework for applying executive coaching skills that is very useful for executive coaches, psychology professionals and management consultants or any therapist and is therefore highly recommended for the targeted audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book was assigned reading for a master's level executinve coaching program
Peltier's book is my favorite assigned during a two-year professional executive program.Beginning with a significant chapter on Assessment, it aptly combines theory (actually 8 different theories) with practical application advice and tools to use.Occasionally there are even checklists provided for specific types of assessment and interventions.

With 20 years of business consulting experience behind me, I found this book to be particularly useful in translating academic theory to readable and useful frameworks, pragmatic tips and case studies. This will help me to cross the bridge from business consulting to executive coaching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful, Needs expanded definition of EC
This is an extremely well written and thorough resource for psychological professionals, management consultants and executive coaches. For psychologists, it helps you decide if EC is right for you.For others, it helps to understand what about psychology is needed to successfully provide EC.There are two basic assumptions outlined in the book which are believed by many to be limiting:One, that executive coaching is primarily a psychological service; and Two, that executive coaching is solely for the purpose of developing leaders.Executive coaching is more complex than just a psychological service. It entails the application of the principles and methods of psychology, business management, leadership, and organization development, among others, to help the executive or would-be executive improve his/her effectivness.Second, executive coaching must be provided with the greater goals of the organization at an equal level of priority to the developmental goals of the individual leader.
For a further explanation of this wider view and the principles and practices that follow, I recommend downloading the free Handbook of Executive Coaching at the website: www.executivcoaching.com
You will also find all free other information and tools for the coach, the executive, and the HR professional.
Beyond the limitations of the definition and assumptions at the outset of this book, it is a must-read for the targeted audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb guidebook for any therapist
When I was in graduate school one of my professors quoted Kurt Lewin by saying, "There is nothing as practical as a good theory."This is an apt comment in reference to Dr Peltier's new book, The Psychology of Executive Coaching: Theory and Application.Except I might expand on that to say there is nothing as practical as a number of good theories.

When psychological theories are spelled out as clearly and cogently as they are in this book, their applications to the world of executive coaching become almost self-evident.But Dr Peltier takes this process further by presenting compelling case studies and scenarios for applying these theories to the business world.

While this book is an excellent guidebook for any therapist interested in expanding his or her practice into working in the corporate world, it is a valuable resource for therapists who counsel business executives in private practice as well. ... Read more

Description:
Bereavement is associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. How to protect the bereaved against extreme suffering and lasting health impairment remains a central research issue. It has been widely accepted that to adjust, the bereaved have to confront and express intense emotions accompanying their loss. It has further been assumed that others assist in this process, and that intervention programs are effective. To assess validity of these assumptions, this article reviews research on the impact of expressing and sharing emotions across four research domains (social support; emotional disclosure; experimentally induced emotional disclosure; and grief intervention). In none of these areas is there evidence that emotional disclosure facilitates adjustment to loss in normal bereavement. Implications of these findings are discussed. ... Read more

Book Description
Learn to conduct a client-centered assessment of spirituality—and use the findings to enhance your interventions as well as your clients' psychospiritual coping abilities

Even to clinicians practiced in helping clients to manage their stress, the impact of clients' spirituality upon their mental health can be difficult to discern and discuss. Moreover, ethical dilemmas can arise when clinicians feel compelled to intervene with a client's negative religious coping.

Spirituality and Mental Health: Clinical Applications can help. This thought-provoking guide for mental health professionals and pastoral counselors provides you with a framework to assess and incorporate client-based spirituality into your practice. The author provides case examples and clinical models related to spirituality and mental health, as well as useful questionnaires for assessing clients. He provides a client-centered ethical framework for integrating spirituality into treatment, and then discusses how to apply it to clients' problems, especially those related to life crises, resentment over past offenses, guilt over past mistakes, andsubstance abuse. He also discusses how mindfulness meditation can enhance clients' coping ability. Finally, he includes a useful Leader's Guide for the psychoeducational spirituality group, which is designed to educate patients and church groups.

Spirituality and Mental Health: Clinical Applications shows how professionals in the above disciplines can address the impact of spirituality on clients by:

gaining an understanding of the construct of spirituality

assessing spirituality and its interface with clients' presenting problems, particularly when spirituality is central to their values.

intervening sensitively in ways that use clients' spiritual perspectives and practices to enhance their coping mechanisms.

using the included Leader's Guide to the 5-session psychoeducational spirituality group As the baby boom generation ages, faith becomes a more integral part of that generation's consciousness. Whether you are a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a social worker, or a pastoral counselor, Spirituality and Mental Health: Clinical Applications is a resource that you'll return to again and again as you work to improve the lives of your clients. ... Book Description
Providers and consumers of mental health services are increasingly making use of the internet to gather information, consult, and participate in psychotherapy. This Handbook gives practical insight into how professionals can translate their practice to an online medium. Divided into four sections, section one provides an overview of how the internet has become an integral part of people's lives, and the research to date on the use and effectiveness of counseling online, as well as idiosyncrasies of online behavior and communication. Section two discusses the "practical" aspects of counseling online, including technological issues, ethical and legal issues, and business issues. Section three focuses on performing psychotherapy online, including online treatment strategies and skills, working with online groups, online testing and assessment, and international and multicultural issues in online counseling. The last section discusses the future of online counseling.

The Handbook is intended for those professionals interested in the burgeoning telehealth movement and to those practicing therapists looking for ways to expand their practices online and/or to help round out treatment to specific patients who might benefit from online therapy in addition to traditional delivery.

Product Description

Behavioral assessment is a psychological assessment paradigm that emphasizes empirically supported, multimethod and multi-informant assessment of specific, observable behaviors and contemporaneous causal variables in the natural environment. The behavioral assessment paradigm stresses the use of well-validated assessment instruments and assumptions that social/environmental, cognitive, and physiological variables are often important sources of behavior variance.

The behavioral assessment paradigm has had a major influence on the field of psychological assessment. It has affected the way research on the causes of behavior disorders is conducted, the way treatment processes and outcomes are evaluated, and the way treatment decisions are made.

The goal of this book is to present the characteristics and underlying assumptions of the behavioral assessment paradigm and to show how they affect the strategies of behavioral assessment. Although all of the concepts and strategies discussed in this book are applicable in the research, this book focuses on the use of behavioral assessment to guide clinical judgements.

Book Description
What can psychology contribute to the understanding of intellectual disabilities and how does clinical psychology help in supporting people with these disabilities? This is the first book to provide a comprehensive overview of concepts and problems, as well as covering the clinical and consulting skills that support interventions in this field. Starting from basic issues of epidemiology and cause, the authors consider issues raised when mental health problems co-occur, when sexual abuse is alleged, and when a person's behaviour is found to challenge the resources of the people or services providing support. The authors examine the family context, and how to address it, and also the organizational context and how to understand and work within it (including its legal aspects). Finally, they consider health promotion issues, and how to work with families and communities to improve the wellbeing of people with intellectual disabilities. This is a truly comprehensive text, written out of both rich clinical experience and extensive knowledge of research and training. It will be invaluable for students and practitioners in many disciplines that are involved in the field of intellectual disability.

"This exceptionally well-organized and comprehensive book goes beyond the typical approach to this topic by providing state-of-the-art advice that emphasizes multiple perspectives on assessment and intervention. The material is practical and systems orientated, and reflects a maturity and wisdom stemming from lengthy experience with this population. Book Description
The first edition of this book was acclaimed as a practical, insightful and humane guide for professionals in mental health, social work and voluntary and government agencies who are concerned with the care of refugees and other victims of political and military violence. These professionals can develop feelings of irritation, disappointment and hopelessness when their work seems not to have the expected result. Successful counselling and therapy require empathy with such victims of traumatic events. But empathy must be based on, and combined with, expertise and knowledge that is both scientific and research-based, and focused on the special needs of these victims. This book is written from the first-hand experience of a world expert in this field, and provides
* A practical guide to clinical work with adult, child and adolescent victims
* A conceptual framework which places treatment in the context of the main therapeutic approaches
* A review of the research evidence that supports these methods of assessment and treatment
* Many clinical examples and a full consideration of the special problems of communication across cultures and language barriers
* Recognition of the special problems for professionals and volunteers dealing with these clients
This new edition reflects the latest scientific and clinical work and knowledge, and will be essential for mental health professionals as well as for a wider readership of social, legal and administrative professionals who are concerned with the wellbeing of these victims.
