Product Description
Counsellors and other mental health professionals are increasingly encountering clients who differ from them in terms of race, culture, and ethnicity. Unfortunately many have not been trained to understand how powerfully culture affects our view of the world. The series on Multicultural Foundations of Counseling and Psychology is an invaluable new resource from Teachers College Press that focuses on multicultural issues in counseling and psychology. The books in this series chart the development of this evolving new field and will help educators, psychologists, counselors, social workers, and other mental health professionals learn to balance culture-universal and culture specific approaches to treat a diverse population. This volume uses fascinating therapeutic encounters to help clinicians understand and respond to the needs of their increasingly diverse clientele. Murphy-Shigematsu urges clinicians to look beyond their assumptions and stereotypes to learn their clients' cultures through eliciting key narratives. Keeping the client and therapist center stage, the author shows the complex ways in which their cultural self-narratives interact. ... Read more

Product Description
The long shadow of September 11 has awakened a widespread desire to understand more about Arab and Islamic cultures. As an Arab who learned western psychology, Marwan Dwairy has first-hand experience with the dilemmas involved in adapting western psychotherapy to the needs of Arab and Muslim clients. Drawing from his 25 years of clinical and educational experience, this original volume will help to deepen knowledge and avoid stereotyping among counselors, therapists, social workers, and other mental health professionals. The author provides a presentation of Arab and Muslim history, peoples, and cultures, including the education and socialization of their children. In addition the book features a systematic revision of the approaches involved in child development, personality, psychodiagnosis, psychopathology, and psychotherapy, with direction for when and how to apply each intervention approach, and innovative techniques and models of diagnosis and intervention specifically designed for Arab and Muslim clients, such as using the physical environment as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool and using metaphoric and indirect intervention methods. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Islam Muslim Psychotheraphy
Although the foreword opined: "Deals directly with the consequences of simplistic stereotyping of Arabic and Muslim people following the 9/11 events and the threat of terrorism" -- this book does not address the issue as to why a group of Saudi Muslims hijacked several airplanes and flew them into various U.S. buildings.Dwairy is an Arab who grew up in Nazareth, Israel, and, based on his website info, has several psychology degrees, and counsels Jewish, Christian and Arab/Muslim clients. This is a very interesting and informative book, the author cites many psychological studies pertaining to psychological `problems' of Arab Muslims. In his analysis he cites several "feel good" phrases from the Quran for his Muslim patients, but he avoids the "Darth Vader" aspects of the Koran. The author makes no attempt in trying to explain the mentality of Islamic suicide bombers.Unfortunately, the author doesn't try to explain the Arab/ Muslim `mentality' as to what makes them `tick.'For this one needs to read "Culture Clash" by Mark Gabriel, "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam" by Robert Spencer, or "Woman in the Muslim Unconscious" by Fatna Sabbah. The author noted only a handful of the `stress' problems of his Arab clients; it would have been very helpful had the author presented many more case studies as to why many Arabs have an inferiority complex in relation to the Western world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the stars -- Please read on about Elsevier issue
Amazon requires a star rating be provided, couldn't get around that. Please read on.

I am the lead co-editor of the Richard & Huprich text. The book is a graduate level introduction to the field of clinical psychology with contributors from around the world. It is appropriate for doc students, master's students, and advanced undergrads. Steve Huprich and I spent 2 years putting the volume together with the help of numerous colleagues in PhD and PsyD programs from the United States, Canada, and Europe.

The "reviewer" above rated the book as "one star" despite obviously not reading it.This is completely unprofessional. He used the star rating process as a forum to disclose an event that *did* happen -- namely, that Elsevier marketing offered to reward individuals with a copy of the book for a 5-star rating (I became aware of this offer when I received it as well!).Elsevier has since apologized and taken actions internally to ensure that it doesn't happen again. The offer, of course, was ill-conceived and a mistake on the part of Elsevier.

But, I don't think that should overshadow the merits of the book itself.Steve and I are very proud of what we and our colleagues have put together and we hope that it will be routinely adopted in graduate programs.Unfortunately, the comments by the individual above don't even address the book -- only regrettable actions taken by Elsevier marketing.I certainly understand the motivation, but please do not judge the book based on this incident.

If you have any questions regarding the book or the marketing fiasco, please e-mail me at Rollins College:dcrichard@rollins.edu.Again, I apologize for what occurred but I would encourage the interested reader to differentiate between the actions of Elsevier and the overall intent and quality of our book (which I happen to think is quite good).

Product Description

Psychologists offer an increasing variety of services to the public. Among these services, psychological assessment of personality and behavior continues to be a central activity. One main reason is that other mental health professionals often do not possess a high level of competence in this area. And when dealing with children and adolescents, psychological assessment seems to take on an even greater role. Therefore, it follows that comprehensive graduate-level instruction in assessment should be a high priority for educators of psychologists who will work with these youth.

This textbook is organized into three sections, consistent with the authors’ approach to teaching. Part I provides students with the psychological knowledge base necessary for modern assessment practice, including historical perspectives, measurement science, child psychopathology, ethical, legal, and cultural issues, and the basics of beginning the assessment process. Part II gives students a broad review of the specific assessment methods used by psychologists, accompanied by specific advice regarding the usage and strengths and weaknesses of each method. In Part III, we help students perform some of the most sophisticated of assessment practices: integrating and communicating assessment results and infusing assessment practice with knowledge of child development and psychopathology to assess some of the most common types of behavioral and emotional disorders in youth.

A text focusing on assessment practices must be updated every four to six years to keep pace with advances in test development. For example, several of the major tests reviewed in the text, such as the Behavioral Assessment System for Children and the Child Behavior Checklist, have undergone major revisions since the publication of the last edition making the current content outdated. Further, another major test, the Conners’ Rating Scales, is undergoing substantial revisions that should be completed before publication of the next edition. Finally, the evidence for the validity of the tests and the recommendations for their appropriate use evolve as research accumulates and requires frequent updating to remain current. For example, there was a special issue of the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology published focusing on evidenced-based assessment of the major forms of childhood psychopathology that will need to be integrated into the chapters in Part 3.

This latter point reflects an important trend in the field that should influence the marketing of the book. That is, there are several initiatives being started in all of the major areas of applied psychology (e.g., school, clinical, and counseling) to promote evidenced-based assessment practices. These initiatives have all emphasized the need to enhance the training of graduate students in this approach to assessment. This has been the orientation of this textbook from its first edition: that is, Clinical Assessment of Child and Adolescent Personality and Behavior has focused on using research to guide all recommendations for practice. The ability of the textbook to meet this training need should be an important focus of marketing the book to training programs across all areas of applied psychology.

Product Description

Mental health professionals and accrediting bodies have steadily been embracing competency-focused learning and clinical practice. In contrast to a skill, a competency is a level of sufficiency evaluated against an external standard. Learning to be clinically competent involves considerably more than the current emphasis on skill and micro skill training. While there are now a small number of books that describe the various clinical competencies of counseling and psychotherapy, none of these books focus on how to learn them. Highly Effective Therapy emphasizes the process of learning these essential competencies. It illustrates them in action with evidence-based treatment protocols and clinical simulations to foster learning and competency. Highly Effective Therapy is a hands-on book that promotes learning of the 20 competencies needed for effective and successful clinical practice.
