Product Description
Flow is the mental state of operation in which the person is fully immersed in what he or she is doing by a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and success in the process of the activity. Proposed by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, the positive psychology concept has been widely referenced across a variety of fields. According to Csíkszentmihályi, flow is completely focused motivation. It is a single-minded immersion and represents perhaps the ultimate in harnessing the emotions in the service of performing and learning. In flow the emotions are not just contained and channeled, but positive, energized, and aligned with the task at hand. To be caught in the ennui of depression or the agitation of anxiety is to be barred from flow. It is the same mindfulness as ecstatic lovemaking, the merging of two into a fluidly harmonious one. The hallmark of flow is a feeling of spontaneous joy, even rapture, while performing a task. Colloquial terms for this or similar mental states include: to be on the ball, in the zone, in the groove, or keeping your head in the game. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop. Its not too late.Don't buy it.
Ah, the free market. These "books" are available for free from Wikipedia. But they are very unfree when you pay US$40 to 100 for them.If people were fully informed, I think they would shop elsewhere, freely.

If only I'd thought of downloading Wikipedia articles and selling them in bunches for fifty bucks a pop.I would be much richer, but sleep less well. Please do not help make crime pay.

Every time I see a "This book purchased with this book" section with and Alphapress book I think, "oops, but that could have been me".

4-0 out of 5 stars divine analysis
I was fortunate to have Dr. Abra as my professor at the University of Calgary and this book was the basis for his "Psychology of Creativity" class. A stellar examination of the creative process, "Assaulting Parnassus" is also an all-star compilation of theories from notable, serious thinkers. Regardless of the particular field of endeavor--they argue-- architects, writers, actors, athletes, painters, inventors, dancers--all share a similar developmental evolution on the way to their creation. Driven by a vision in their minds of a certain something that does not yet exist, these conflicted, ambitious, single-minded creators take a gargantuan risk in making something that was not there before. It's easy to look back at stuff that's already there. It's quite another thing to come up with it. The latter is what this book is all about. With wit and insight, it illuminates the creative process with deserved reverence. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a SHAM !!DON'T BUY IT
This book is a SHAM ! It is a total waste of money and good paper.
DON'T BE FOOLED !
There are NO intellectually redeeming qualities about this book !
It is a severe intellectual vacuum.
SO DON'T WATE YOUR MONEY or TIME !!!

FIRST - It is not a book; at 82 pages it is barely a pamphlet.
And for a pamphlet written by a Ph.D. - it is of shameful quality.

SECOND - It is a very conservative position to opine that, in comparison to "real" books about the subject of GST, the author apparently knows very little about the subject of GST {and even less about the subject of Creativity}. This pamphlet doesn't ring with any semblance of subject matter expertise. In fact, this pamphlet reads as if it may be the unedited, draft notes of the author attempting to teach himself about GST and Creativity.

THIRD - There is NO real authorship and NO real analysis involved. This so-called 'book' doesn't even meet the standards for a proper review of the research. The overwhelming majority of this book is an ill-conceived collection of disjointed sentences about what other authors have said. This pinhead presentation redundantly utilizes the 'third-person-removed' style of "Jones said this" and "Smith said that". It also utilizes another tedious 'third-person-removed' technique by way of a 'review-of-the-review' of research in the style of 'Peter said this about Tom's book'... ad absurdum et ad nauseam.

FOURTH- There is NO real organization, nor continuity, nor connection of thoughts. It is a potpourri of pale positions, a melange of mediocrity, a constipated compendium of confused concepts exposing the author's incompetence.

FIFTH - Ignore the ill conceived and misleading title ! For this is the most UN-creative and UN-inspiring book about the subjects of Creativity and/or GST that a reasonably intelligent person could ever imagine. One might expect this kind of insipid quality from a less-than-average college freshman's first attempt at a serious paper - but not a Ph.D. college professor.

FACT: It utilizes 12 pages out of 82 in order to cite the works of others at the end of each chapter. So it repeatedly (and 'creatively') provides another full citing of the same works over and over again per chapter in order to generate more pages by way of unnecessary redundancy.

FACT: On average, it provides a 3-page summary for a 10-page chapter - (very 'creative' - just another way to generate more pages through unnecessary redundancy).
FACT: There are nine...repeat NINE blank pages at the end of this pamphlet. {So in actuality, the book does provide the reader with 100 pages. However, the blank pages are worth significantly more than the written pages in the same vane of critical logic that one (1) is infinitely greater than zero (0)}.

FACT: It purposely misquotes a very simplest of time-honored maxims...and then attempts to pass off this sad misquote as the real maxim ('creatively' to sound pseudo-sophisticated).

FACT: It cites the works of others in the most meager manner (that any college senior would be ashamed to be associated with).

SUMMARY: If this is the quality of work that we can expect from the current generation of our American Ph.D. professors - then our American college students are doomed to intellectual disaster. Those who stupidly praise this book with any semblance of acclaim are only exposing their own severe intellectual vacuum. ... Read more

Product Description
Those wishing to know the nature of madness, wrote Voltaire, should observe their dreams. This is an important new analysis of the problematic relationship between dreams and madness that preoccupied nineteenth-century French writers, thinkers, and doctors. Tony James shows how doctors (such as Esquirol, Lelut, and Janet), thinkers (including Maine de Biran and Taine), and writers (Balzac, Nerval, Baudelaire, Victor Hugo, and Rimbaud) grappled in very different ways with the problems raised by the so-called "phenomena of sleep" and particularly the question: might dreams be a source of creativity? ...
