Product Description
During the last 15 years, human sociobiology has metamorphosed into evolutionary psychology. It is concerned with the social problems and stresses hominid and primate ancestors encountered, the psychological mechanisms natural selection shaped to deal with these stresses, and the way those ancient mechanisms work now. Evolutionary psychologists are making great progress in expanding the understanding of human nature, however, this knowledge has had little impact on policymakers and legislators. Supreme Court justices and managers seldom consult evolutionary psychologists to help with their deliberations. When faced with private decisions few individuals ask themselves how a Darwinian perspective might help them. This volume's aim is to start the process of using theory and findings of evolutionary psychology to help make the world a better place to live.

This book takes evolutionary psychology explicitly into applied areas in a way no other book has. It includes a reasonable scope of applications from pornography to psychopaths and from morality to sex differences in the workplace. An applications section provides concrete ideas for dealing with social and policy issues, including chapters on women in the workplace, rape, and child support. Providing good coverage of basic issues and theory of the field, this book gives lay people and law/policymakers appropriate background to fully understand the applications chapters. Part II provides information on basic psychological mechanisms for group living--including chapters on emotions, reciprocity and legal reasoning, and self deception--that impact on how well public policy and law function. The material in the first two sections provide an intellectual basis for the chapters in the third part of the book which deals with the application of evolutionary psychology to a variety of substantive areas related to public policy and personal decisions. A political scientist concludes the book with a commentary on evolutionary psychology and public policy.

The book is designed to serve as a stand-alone text in evolutionary psychology and public policy that can be used in a variety of disciplines, such as psychology, social work, law and psychology, and public policy.

Product Description
Developmental psychology emerged within the evolutionary, progressive though of the late 19th century.Concerned with processes by which new forms develop and new phenomena emerge, evolutionary thinking turned readily to the natural history of childhood. This series of seminal writings defines that movement. In 1877 the great biologist, Charles Darwin, and the philosopher, Hippolyte Taine, published short observations on the early development of their own children. When Wilhelm Preyer, a highly respected physiologist, followed with his own remarkable and much more extensive observations, the biographical study of childhood had begun in earnest. ... The purpose of the book is to summarise recent advances in our understanding of leader-follower interactions and to illustrate these principles with the lives of ancient political and military leaders from Greece and Rome. The authors review psychologic, cognitive neuroscientific and evolutionary approaches to leader-follower dynamics and illustrate these dynamics as they played out in the lives of the most eminent of the military and political leaders of the classical world. The authors summarise what is known about leader-follower relations by reviewing all extant papers on the topic in the psychology, neuroscientific and evolutionary psychology literature. Product Description

Evolutionary Psychology (EP) attributes much human behavior to evolved psychological traits – psychological adaptations that evolved to solve recurrent problems in human ancestral environments. Traits like the mental capacity for acquiring language, or the ability to infer emotion by looking at a human face, or the ability to cooperate, or even the universal fear of snakes and spiders, are viewed by EP practitioners as the basis for how humans behave. That behavior is in turn affected by environmental factors: what language will be learned? What emotions are displayed most often? Cooperate in what activity, and to what end? SNAKE!!!

The point of Information System (IS) EP research then is that these evolved psychological traits very likely influence our behavior toward modern technologies, and a deeper understanding of how technology affects behavior might be achieved by applying concepts and theories from EP. Springer author Ned Kock (Information Systems Action Research: An Applied View of Emerging Concepts and Methods) is probably the leading scholar in IS-EP research, and he is proposing an AoIS volume to gather together for the first time invited papers on EP concepts and theories that can be used as a basis for future research; examples of ongoing IS-EP research; and a look at the current debate on IS-EP research. Kock will invite leading scholars in IS and IS-EP research as well as the leading scholars in pure EP (see attached proposal for all names) to contribute papers. Topics to be covered include basic human behavior toward technology; interface design; online dating and consumer behavior; information search and use behavior; and autopoiesis and self-organizing information systems.

This ground-breaking new volume will immediately appeal to all researchers in IS and to many in pure EP research. Additionally, there should be some keen interest in fields like software engineering, computer science, organization and systems research, and industrial engineering. Advanced graduate and post-doctorate students in these areas will also find much of interest.

Product Description
Contributors to this volume seriously engage issues in the crossroads where biology, psychology, and economics meet. The volume makes several important contributions to the area and provides an overview of the current state of knowledge.Biologist David Sloan Wilson, psychologists Robert Kurzban and C.A. Aktipis, economists Geoffrey Hodgson, Paul Rubin and Evelyn Gick, and jurist David Friedman consider altruism, selfishness, group selection, methodological individualism, dominance hierarchies, and other issues relating evolutionary psychology to economics.Several contributors, such as Viktor Vanberg and Brian Loasby, pay special attention to the role ofF. A. Hayek and other "Austrian" thinkers in shaping evolutionary approaches to economic theory.Theoretical biologist Deby Cassill relates her revolutionary theory of "skew selection" in biology to perennial issues in political economy. The volume includes a symposium on group selection and methodological individualism. In an important paper, D. G. Whitman argues that group selection and methodological individualism are "compatible and complementary."Comments from Elliot Sober & David Sloan Wilson, Richard Langlois, Todd Zywicki, and Adam Gifford offer a heterogeneous set of responses to Whitman's argument.Roger Koppl's introduction constitutes a review essay and includes an argument that "Austrian" economists have a comparative advantage in bringing the Verstehen tradition of social thought into contact with recent work in biology and evolutionary psychology. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars enlightening, entertaining, and fishing!
Paul Quinnet uses his vast knowledge and experience in human pychology and fishing, to creat a facinating disortation. He uses his clinical experiences of human behavior and relates them to fishing life. This bookis very difficult to explain to someone who has not read it. I found itvery enjoyable to read and use some of his ideas every day. I can't believethat this book is rated so low on the sales scale. One should also read thesister to this book, Pavlovs Trout. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The author owes us an apology
I didn't read this book. Not really. I went straight for the conclusion.

What is the solution to THE PUZZLE OF MALE HOMOSEXUALITY? Don't we all want to find out???

Well, it turns out to be...a feminized male brain. Yes, you heard me. Some men, apparently, have a feminized brain, making them more sensitive, better at appreciating art, playing the piano, and so on. And yes, they become gay.

*That's* the explanation? Yawn. Apart from the ridiculous stereotype (do all gays play piano and like Picasso's paintings?), how does the author explain super-masculine gays? Or normally masculine gays? Or gay women, for that matter? (Oh, sorry. The book was about male homosexuality. Let me guess. A masculinized female brain?)

That the author apparently doesn't like gays and believe they are a menace 2 society, doesn't exactly enhance his credibility. Or feminized sensitivity, for that matter. One chapter is (flippantly) titled: "Does the author owe an apology to the gay community?"

Yes, punk, "the author" certainly does owe both gays, straights and lesbian ravens an apology FOR WASTING OUR TIME AND MONEY.

2-0 out of 5 stars From the Past
I can easily understand why the author had to self-publish this post-professorial rehash of psychological metaphysics, when on page 506 he writes: "Recovery from homosexuality is something like recovery from alcoholism." The inanity speaks for itself.

Otherwise, the author is a gifted writer. He is clear and lucid, often compassionate and understanding, but rehashes the same old "polls of individual self-reports" -- usually of students in psychology courses required to provide them -- that psychologists use as "pseudo-science" from individuals self-reports -- a practice ridiculed outside and within psychiatry (see, McGuire & Troisi, "Darwinian Psychiatry" OUP, 1998).

The author's "Darwinian" reaches are admitting Darwin's theory of life (biology) might have some import on the subject of "homosexuality" or homophilia. This is rather late-coming, since evolutionary psychology was launched in 1970s. But it is from the 1970's Dr. Gunter Doerner's "hormonal theory" of homosexual aetiology -- baptized by Berman as the "low masculine brain" condition -- that a non-biologist infers must be the "cause" of homosexuality. Fortunately, Dr. Berman, unlike Dr. Doerner, does not propose we treat all pregnancies with "neonatal testosterone injections" to preclude the "disorder."

Dr. Berman defends reparative therapy, which he baptizes "reorientation therapy" as successful in those patients willing to endure the years of psychotherapy -- otherwise, it is best to help the poor, unhappy, and persecuted homosexual -- not the least by psychoanalysts -- to counsel them in how to "adjust" if they don't want, or cannot, reorient themselves to the natural heterosexual. Unlike others in the field that are far ahead of Dr. Berman, he offers no other treatment suggestions, and endorses all the metaphysical theories presently in vogue among psychologists. It's a shame that Dr. Berman apparently has not consulted McGuire and Troisi, two leading research psychiatrists and university faculty.

Finally, Dr. Berman seems unfamiliar with the rather "old" theory of social constructionism and of the subsequent development in distinguishing between NATURAL and SOCIAL facts, as when he adopts the diagnosis of a "low masculinized brain" as at the root of homosexual hormonal deprivation. As any modern-day reader knows, the natural facts of biological dimorphism and the gender attributes of social facts -- in what we deem to be masculine and feminine -- are related indeed, but not to be confused, much less conflated.

If readers want an overview of how psychologists continue to think and practice, this volume is invaluable. But very little "science" or Darwin is integrated into the dominate metaphysical theories -- bio, socio, medico, enviro-, or psycho- popular -- of modern psychology. After reading this fine exposition, it felt like a lobotomy, or reparative therapy, when psych's attached electrical probes to men's erogenous zones to use electrical current (as Pavlov did his dogs) when showing men pictures of naked men. But without question, it reveals the deprivation of psychology as an applied science, and truly the pseudo-science critics increasingly claim.

5-0 out of 5 stars a fascinating read
Anyone interested in the nature/nurture origins and research on homosexuality should read this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anthropological prespective on Consciousness
Free Will, Consciousness and Self: Anthropological Perspectives on Psychology by Preben Bertelsen (Studies in the Understanding of the Human Condition: Berghahn Books) What is it to be human? How do we relate to the world, to each other and to our selves-in everyday life and when faced with life's big questions?
In this book, the author develops a general theoretical model that may offer a better understanding of underlying principles of human behavior. The author shows that general psychology can make a significant contribution to a general anthropology and the human condition.
Excerpt: Overview. This method, and the result in the form of the critical?particularistic-universalistic anthropological model, will gradually unfold throughout the chapters of the book:
Chapter 1 - General psychology is defined as a discipline of psychology, which (1) identifies and conceptualises the general psychological phenomena that constitute the field of psychology, and therefore (2) defines and analyses the science of psychology - especially concerning the general principles of model building and of the relation between empirical and theoretical sciences.
Chapter 2 - briefly presents the concept of anthropological psychology: the sub-discipline of general psychology which can be defined as the science of the human psyche as distinct from other forms of psyche.
Chapter 3 - presents an evolutionary and cultural-historical account of the development of the human condition of co-existence.
Chapter 4 - analyses the different kinds of scientific explanation that can be applied in the construction of scientific theories in general and psychological theories in particular.
Chapter 5 - argues that free will is compatible with scientific theories and explanations and that free will can in fact exist as a principle of (animal and human) nature. It is argued that we are not just determined by forces beyond our control, but that we are able to a certain extent to form our own lives and personalities, and that our 'self consists precisely in this self-organizing power.
Chapter 6 - presents a model of consciousness, showing in particular how it emerges into its complete form during the first four or five years of child development.
Chapter 7 - is concerned with creating a model of the human self. All three phenomena: free will, consciousness and the self are then combined in an overall taxonomy that demonstrates their interrelationship.
Chapter 8 - presents an overview of the taxonomic relations among the various psychological phenomena presented in the previous chapters. This taxonomy is then analysed as a general anthropological psychological model in its own right. This completes the project of the present book: to construct a model of the distinguishing features of the human capacity to live under and maintain the fundamental human condition of co-existence from a psychological perspective, based on the analysis of selected psychological phenomena of free will, consciousness and self.
