Book Description
Human emotional suffering has been studied for centuries, but the significance of psychological injuries within legal contexts has only recently been recognized.As the public becomes increasingly aware of the ways in which mental health affects physical - and financial - well-being, psychological injuries comprise a rapidly growing set of personal injury insurance claims.Although the diverse range of problems that people claim to suffer from are serious and often genuine, the largely subjective and unobservable nature of psychological conditions has led to much skepticism about the authenticity of psychological injury claims. Improved assessment methods and research on the economic and physical health consequences of psychological distress has resulted in exponential growth in the litigation related to such conditions.Integrating the history of psychological injuries both from legal and mental health perspectives, this book offers compelling discussions of relevant statutory and case law.Focussing especially on posttraumatic stress disorder, it addresses the current status and empirical limitations of forensic assessments of psychological injuries and alerts readers to common vulnerabilities in expert evidence from mental health professionals.In addition, it also uses the latest empirical research to provide the best forensic methods for assessing both clinical conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder and for alternative explanations such as malingering.The authors offer state-of-the-art information on early intervention, psychological therapies, and pharmaceutical treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder and stimulating suggestions for further research into this complex phenomenon.A comprehensive guide to psychological injuries, this book will be an indispensable resource for all mental health practitioners, researchers, and legal professionals who work with psychological injuries. ... Editorial Review

Book Description

As in its first edition, this book offers a conceptual model for understanding the nature of legal competencies. The model is interpreted to assist mental health professionals in designing and performing assessments for legal competencies defined in criminal and civil law, and to guide research that will improve the practice of evaluations for legal competencies. A special feature is the book's evaluative review of specialized forensic assessment instruments for each of several legal competencies. Three-fourths of the 37 instruments reviewed in the second edition are new and thus were not reviewed in the first edition.

Application of the assessment model and reviews of instruments are provided for six areas of legal competence:
-Competence to Stand Trial;
-Waiver of Rights to Silence and Legal Counsel;
-Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity;
-Parenting Capacity - Determination of Child Custody;
-Guardianship and Conservatorship; and
-Competence to Consent to Treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for all psychologists / evaluators
This book is extremely thorough yet easy to use.It came highly recommended by two very respected (well published, board certified, etc)professors I worked under as part of my clincal internship.My primary duites are not as a forensic psychologist; however, I have found in the couse of my work for an Outpatient Community Mental Health center that one can never really avoid forensic / competency issues and related evaluations.I have referred to this text often in the year since I purchased it; this book has proved invaluable.Forensic issues are increasingly prevalent in todays clinical practice; even if you are not primarily interested in forensic psychology, chances are you have or will be asked to assess competency at some point; while clinically oriented professors often offer some guidance on this matter, they often lack the epxerience / expertise to thoroughly train their students on the legal aspects of such determinations. This book provides the most relevant and accurate needed to ensure prudent and high quality.My only regret is that I did not purchase this book sooner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excerpt of review from Book Reviews
"The first edition of this book was a classic, widely cited both for its analysis of forensic assessment instruments and for Grisso's integrative theory of forensic evaluation.With the second edition, Evaluating Competencies remains a classic.I expect that whenever a forensic psychologist of psychiatrist prepares for an advanced examination in this specialty, this book will-or should-be one of the first books reviewed."

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from Contemporary Psychology
"This book successfully addresses two audiences.First, it provides an interesting introduction and overview of psychology and law for those unfamiliar with the field, and in this capacity would serve as an excellent sourcebook for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course.Second, its critical, up-to-date research provides a use ful resource for researchers and practitioners who are already part of this rapidly developing field.As such, it provides a nice complement to other commonly used advanced texts in this area..."

Book Description

From the initial investigation of a crime to the sentencing of an offender, many everyday practices within the criminal justice system involve complex psychological processes. This volume analyzes the processes involved in such tasks as interviewing witnesses, detecting deception, and eliciting eyewitness reports and identification from adults and children. Factors that influence decision making by jurors and judges are examined as well. Throughout, findings from experimental research are translated into clear recommendations for improving the quality of evidence and the fairness of investigative and legal proceedings. The book also addresses salient methodological questions and identifies key directions for future investigation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of a difficult and very relevant subject
There are other books of interest on forensic and psychology of the law, but I was most impressed with this newly published text.If I were teaching this subject, I would assign this book for the class.I was particularly interested in the chapter on interviewing techniques, although, I think the authors missed an opportunity to integrate the techniques utilized by Alfred Kadushin (see, The Social Work Interview).

The text fully covers the field of jury analysis and witness testimony including the controversial subject of false memories.The chapters on trial tactics would be particular use for attorneys.The only shortcoming with this book and all others of this topic is the lack of discussion about the police interviewing known as the Reid Technique.There are critical books on this subject, but the books that devote themselves to psychology and the law seem to not directly address themselves to police interviewing.Probably all of the studies on interviewing skills are from clinical interviewing styles.In fact, most interviews that are part of criminal investigations are performed by police or those trained in police methods.The Reid technique is the leading method of police interviewing, but it is highly flawed.

In sum, as an attorney and a professional in the field of child abuse/neglect, I hope that students and professionals invest in this book for education in the field of forensic psychology/social work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but some issues
When I was first asked to teach a class in Psychology and Law, I chose this book (after some deliberation).I've been using it for my class this semester and have to say I am somewhat disappointed.There are many typos in the book.Most are inconsequential, but a few involved the mixing up of different terms, which confused me for a second (and then I figured it out) but posed a great problem for my students (who don't have as much of a background in this field).

In addition, the organization within the chapters does not always make sense to me; sometimes, they'll mention something at one point and then come back to it later on in the chapter, bringing up newer information and research, when it seems it would have been easier to cover all the information related to that specific topic at once.In many chapters, they cover the history of a topic (sometimes too much history, such as in the chapter on Family Law) but fail to even offer a basic history of the field of psychology and law itself.They quote Munsterberg (considered by many, including myself, to be the father of psychology and law) once, and even then, they quote him from a secondary source.

Another issue (and this is not something the authors could necessarily control) is how much the field of psychology and law changes and it is difficult for books to keep up with this information.For that reason, I think textbook companies should consider creating websites that offer such updated information, or even, publishing textbooks electronically, allowing for more frequent updates (but that's an issue that, I think, involves textbooks in many fields, so this isn't as much a criticism of this book as it is a criticism of the industry iteself).

Finally, this textbook is not always written in a manner that is interesting and engaging to students.I don't think we should be trying to entertain students (they need to learn that sometimes topics can be boring) but we need textbooks that are accessible to students.I have a difficult enough time getting my students to actually read and understand their textbook as it is.

Overall, I think this book is accurate in it's information (more than I can say for some textbooks) but has so many issues that I have decided not to continue using this book in my class.

I ordered this book used and it was like new.Im very happy with it.
