5-0 out of 5 stars This IS the Gestalt of Psychotherapy
I agree with another reviewer that this text is somewhat dated, but it is still one of the "must reads" for a gestalt-literate therapist. Perhaps not as purely practiced as some of the major schools of psychotherapy, and unfortunately more often misunderstood to be a group of therapeutic techniques, the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of the Gestalt model will continue to form the gestalt of all good clinical practice!

4-0 out of 5 stars The writing is dated but the content is good.
Erv and Miriam Polster were two major stars in the pantheon of psychotherapy, Gestalt therapy in particular. They were strongly influenced by the ideas of Isadore From and Lore Perls, with whom they studied at the Cleveland Institute of Gestalt Therapy and in New York City. For many years they trained practitioners in the methods of Gestalt therapy through their training center in La Jolla. They also did workshops across the US and abroad. This book is written in the 1970's and shows it, with its somewhat flowerly and gushy style. However it is probably the best book around for someone who wants to know a bit about the theory and practice of this approach first-hand, from two people who really knew what they were doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good and complete
This book really has what it offers: this is an integrated view of gestalt therapy, but not only that it gives a clear and very well explanation about the main concepts of Gestalt theraphy, I really recomend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars An easy introduction
This basic introduction to gestalt therapy, first published thirty years ago, is relatively easy to read and covers quite a lot of concepts and practices. It also provides many anecdotal accounts of example cases to help illustrate its themes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fritzo, Fritzer and Fritzession
"To be the only one, and to know that you are real--that's sanity, isn't it?"
- Lila Loomis in Psycho

A great book about great approach. This is where you should start if you are interested in the Gestalt therapy. The first part of this book tells you the basic concepts of Gestalt and explains easily the basic principles about the relationship between the client and the therapeutist in the Gestalt framework.

I personally found the second part rather difficult to concentrate on. But I think that readers of English speaking ancestry will find it more easy to read.

Best thing in this book is that it is extremely easy and almost fun to read. I have read quite a few books about the Gestalt approach, and found reading this very enjoyable. Books by such specialists as Joseph Zinker and Claudio Naranjo are good and insightful, but not necessarily good ones to start with.

And remember that Fritz Perls himself wanted to be simple and clear in his writings and easy to approach. Like he himself said: "any reasonable approach to psychology not hiding behind a professional jargon must be comprehensible to the intelligent layman and must be grounded in the facts of human behaviour." This books is a real book and certainly no psychological jargon or BS. Even if you don't like it, you have to read only 200 pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Readable Classic
All of Perls' books are an interesting read.Too bad the title sounds so clinical. You don't have to be a psychologist to enjoy this book. Anyone that wants to understand themselves and others better will be satisfied.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Gestalt Approach & Eye Witness to Therapy
I HAVE A BOOK WITH THE SAME NAME WITH THIS ON THE COVER,THE LAST AND MOST COMPREHENSIVE WORK BY THE GENIUS WHO FATHERED GESTALT THERAP, AND CAN NOT FIND THIS IN YOUR BOOKS SHOWN I WOULD LIKE TO SELL THIS POCKETBOOK NOW. The author is the same .

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplemente maravilloso

4-0 out of 5 stars Essays and Transcripts
In an interview with Adelaide Bry, Perls refused to answer when asked what Gestalt Therapy was. He commented that he hated intellectualizing, and instead walked her through some exercises to demonstrate the integrative rather than the analytical nature of a gestalt-based approach. It's an interesting moment, and sheds some potential light on the best way to read this book.

Essentially what Perls believed was that in order to make intelligent and healthy decisions, you have to make conscious decisions. So the goal of therapy is to bring all the issues at play into consciousness so that by being aware of all the factors involved, real choices can be made in an informed fashion. He used theatrical techniques and group therapy to help his patients achieve their goals.

Perls is reported to have viewed the essays in the first portion of the book (The Gestalt Approach) as outdated, and instead wished that he could have made a film to convey his ideas. There are seven essays, which lay out the basic principles behind his theories and ideas:

Foundations
Neurotic Mechanisms
Here Comes the Neurotic
Here and Now Therapy
Peeling the Onion
Shuttling, Psychodrama, and Confusion
Who is Listening?

I would tend to agree (with Perls' implied message) that reading the transcripts of group therapy sessions in the second part of the book (Eye Witness to Therapy) is much more illuminating for somebody who wants to get some insight into what really is involved in Gestalt Therapy.

For me at least, as a layman, it was much easier to get a feel for what was involved by reading the flow between the patients and the therapist in group than it was to digest the message in essay form.

Thought-provoking. ... Read more

I'm a gestalt therapist, and I first read this book as a graduate student learning gestalt therapy (when I was even younger than I am now ;-) I still refer to it, and re-read it from time to time and always learn something that didn't stand out to me last time. Product Description

Lynne Jacobs and Richard Hycner assemble an international group of Gestalt theorists and clinicians for an engaging and insightful investigation into the integration of relational approaches within Gestalt therapy.

The book is divided thematically into three sections. The first section speculates on the history and development of relationality in terms of Gestalt therapy. Chapters that discuss the patient-therapist relationship comprise the second section, and include explorations into uncertainty in interpretation and understanding, attunement and optimal responsiveness, working with shame, and negotiating individuality and "betweenness." The last section opens up to groups and organizations, applying relational approaches to Gestalt therapeutic encounters with more than one patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Insightful Probings into the Human Psyche
Fritz was a genius, and this book proves it.The therapeutic method he developed helped his clients get beneath the surface features of their difficulties and see and deal with the existential issues that underlay them. The transcripts the book contains reveal the dramatic results that his masterly application of the method could produce.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC
Transcripts of Fritz teaching and working - simple, direct. The exact technique wouldn't work for me, but the underlying principles are brilliant - probably for their simplicity and directness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Showing What Gestalt Therapy is through Action
Fritz Perls was very masterful at working with people. The book contains transcripts of how he interacted with others in a therapeutic context. He was able to effect changes very rapidly. The book has the theory, too, but it would not have made as much sense without the transcripts.I felt I got what Gestalt was about from this book.I have since prefered the Focusing approach, even as an explanation of how Fritz Perls worked, but this book inspired me and gave me the courage to confront my own challenges and then work with others. The key is that our organism is trying to meet a challenge and find closure, to integrate a gestalt, come to a kind of wholeness. We block ourselves from this, partly by not giving ourselves permission to feel our anger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Action!
I've read many books by the great psychological theorists like Jung, Adler, Horney etc., but none of them cut to the heart of becoming like Fritz does. Even the other third wave analysts like Rogers and Maslow stilltake a more abstract approach: they suggest ideas on how to functionoptimally in interpesonal relationships, but don't dig very deep into theapplication, or the how. This book uses practices that have parallels inZen buddhism and other sorts of experience-oriented disciplines, butdoesn't praise any particular system or thinker. The presentation of thematerial is very simple and informal--taken from live lectures. Thus, nothing is academically obscure. Rather, its as though one is listening toa very integrated human being who is beyond the need to aggrandize himselfthrough helping others. This is a very good book for people that wish toopen themselves up to the full experience of living. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A+, A+, A+!!
What can I say, nothing beats this price! Great condition. I could have settled for a new one in hardcover but this more than did the trick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Yourself

This is not just a self-help book. It's a classic Transactional Analysis's book written in the early seventieths that brings exercises and experiments from Gestalt, that will help you answer questions like: "Who am I?" and "What am I doing here?"

It's a very easy reading book which presents the TA theory in a clear way which can be understood by everybody. According to Eric Berne, creator of Transactional Analysis, the theory could be understood by an 8 year old child.

I'm a psychotherapist and I use TA every day in my life and in my practice with clients to help them make the changes they want. I recommend this book to all my clients, which help them on the process of psychotherapy. They enjoy the exercises that are very easily done. For them I make a special reference to chapter 5, where the authors present an easy explanation on how we become the way we are and the origin of the internal dialogue, helping people to make new decisions.

It's an amazing book that I would recommend to anyone interested in having a better life with oneself and with others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Building Self Esteem
I purchased this book for a friend who was suffering from low self esteem. I read the book when it was first published 25 years ago and I was pleased that it is still being printed. I have helped many of my friends and patients over the years by recommending this book. It definitely has changed many lives for the better.

3-0 out of 5 stars super slow
Super slow delivery. It took 10 days for the book to get delivered via UPS.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic!
This book is a true product of genius! I highly recommend it. In an era of "positive thinking" and pop psychology, one thing you don't hear talked often enough about, as the authors do in this book, is that if you don't investigate what is your "life script", positive thinking & other quick-fixes are all just band-aides. According to the authors, written approximately 30 years ago, we adhere to our script, mostly unconsciously. We are "set" to return to our original psychological position and our script is almost like a spell. The good news is that by bringing our script to our awareness, we can begin to make different choices and to change our belief system. Most of our problems, our pathology, our unnecessary suffering, has to do with receiving messages that are very far away from our original potential/authentic self (pg. 104). This book will guide you with brilliance, compassion, and based on evidence-based practice. The authors have done humanity a great favor.I hope you benefit from it, as I have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars gestalt therapy- really excellent
Many aspects of gestalt therapy presented in a way that I find engaging and at the same time exploring theory in detail. I particularly like the commentaries in the form of a dialogue along side many of the chapters, as they deepened my own thinking. This has been an extremely useful book to me as a resource in my training-I imagine I will continue to re-read and refer back as I begin my practice. It's quite pricey but it is a treasure trove.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Biased/Un-biased Recommendation
First, full disclosure admits that I am a contributing author to this book. However, I'm not writing to advocate my chapter; rather, I'm writing because I am feeling fortunate and grateful to be among the other authors in this great book. That is true, and it is also true that the content and approach to this book provides a comprehensivetreatment of Gestalt therapy that serves our discipline well and provides a solid reference for trainees. Many of these authors are people with whom I have been meeting, conferencing, discussing, arguing, and from whom I have been learning ever since I started my journey in formal Gestalt training.I would rank this volume in the top five for Gestalt therapy literature worldwide.

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic text
Perhaps it is not a coincidence that there is so little writing about gestalt therapy, since the therapy emphasizes experience over explanation. In any case, the writing here is very important for those who wish to understand the intellectual basis of this approach.Gestalt therapy was written by three people. The significant part of the book, part II in the original published version, was written by Paul Goodman from the notes of Fritz Perls.Reputedly, Perls paid Goodman $500 for the job, but Goodman had trouble collecting. The publishers decided to make Hefferline's section Part I.This section contains a bunch of exercises that bear little relationship to what a Gestalt therapist would actual do with a patient.

Isadore From, the famous Gestalt trainer, said that Part II was deliberately written so as not to be easily introjected (swallowed uncritically). The essence of Gestalt therapy is that change/learning takes place through experience, and that introjection, or simply swallowing what a therapist says to you is of no use. Thus, the text of Part II must be read line by line, as it was taught in year- long seminars by Isadore. When read this way, Perls, Hefferline and Goodman emerges as a rich source of insight and theoretical perspective about what was almost called "existential phenomenological therapy" by its creators.

5-0 out of 5 stars a vital and pathbreaking work
This initial formulation of Gestalt Therapy is the single most important development of the psychotherapeutic ideas of Freud and Reich. Personally, it has helped me begin to gain real insight into myself, my friends and family, and my society.

Synthesizing psychoanalysis, western philosophy, and eastern meditation techniques, the book presents a new and vital perspective on mental health and illness, as well as a series of exercises and practices designed to bring us into closer contact with our daily experience and gain insight into the neurotic mechanisms by which we ward off excitement and growth.

The book is divided into two parts (their intended order reversed by the publisher). In the second part, the foundational theory of Gestalt Therapy is layed out. The presentation is vague and unsystematic, but its insights and approaches are crucial. Breaking with Freud, and developing Wilhelm Reich's methods of Character Analysis, the authors shift the focus of therapy from our memories, dreams, and unconscious functions, onto our present, aware functions.

Gestalt Therapy defines the self as our individual, historically, culturally, and biologically determined system of contacting our environment. Health, in GT terms, is the ability to recognize and act on elements in our environment to satisfy our impulses.

The 'gestalt' comes from gestalt _psychology_, a non-therapeutic German experimental discipline which studied the way we discern 'figures' from the 'ground' of experience. (Think of the famous picture that looks like a candlestick or two silhouetted faces-- each of these images is a 'figure' or 'gestalt' formed from the 'ground' of light and dark on the page.) The crucial ability of the healthy individual, according to Gestalt _Therapy_ is the power to easily form 'gestalts' from the experiential 'ground' of daily life, recognizing opportunities for fulfillment in the environment and acting on them with vigor and grace.

Unhealth, or neurosis, on the other hand, is conceived of in GT as 'interrupted excitement', a habitual breaking of contact with our environment and our impulses, an inability to form gestalts. Our neuroses work by avoiding novelty, tensing our muscles against impulses, and projecting our desires and resentments onto others. These neurotic strategies, Goodman and Perls observe, are pandemic in our culture, and manifest themselves in widespread anxiety, boredom, resentment, and violence.

Part One contains a series of 18 exercises in awareness and contact through which we can begin to recognize our neurotic mechanisms and the impulses they ward off. They form the practical core of the Therapy, and deal variously with focusing attention on breathing, body sensations, emotional reactions, eating, and speech, etc. Some are more clearly conceived and presented than others.

Ultimately, this great book is not a theoretical template to be applied. Rather, it provides an orientation, and an _invitation_ to assume the responsibility for our own well-being, discovering "What excitements do I refuse to accept as my own? Where do I begin to avoid or suppress them? How do I do hinder myself?" Gestalt Therapy is a call to awareness, a challenge to start to contact our experiences, change our behaviors, and grow. It is a book the must be lived with, tried, challenged, discussed, returned to. I recommend going through the exercises in the first part, then reading and digesting the 2nd, then returning to the exercises.

"Relaxing deliberateness, interpreting oneself, feeling one's body and emotions, these don't themselves solve any problems. They make solution possible, but the solution must be lived out."

5-0 out of 5 stars A book worth to read again from time to time.
This book has meant much to me personally. I always suggest that people buy the book for themselves. I am so dissappointed because I did not get my book back from someone who borrowed it. However, for me it is worth it tobuy another one. ... Read more

Product Description
This remarkable exploration of the inner principles of Gestalt therapy originated over twenty years ago in the form of a completed book, written at Fritz Perls’ request. Here it is joined by a collection of essays that present Naranjo’s reassessment of Gestalt therapy for the present day. In his fascinating study, Naranjo has captured the flavor and distinctive character of the California-based school of Gestalt therapy, propagated by Perls in his last years as a teacher and exemplar of the approach he pioneered. Lively and highly readable, learned and insightful, this book is indispensable both for professionals and the lay-reader in demonstrating why Fritz Perls was truly the father of the now-flourishing human potential movement. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Organizational Consulting; A Gestalt Approach is very dry and not an easy read. While some concepts stand out as important in client relationships most of the book is too academic for practical use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful stuff, Well presented
Gestalt theory is wide and deep, often conceptually slippery, and difficult to grasp, but it can impact one's life and work in profound and lasting ways.Nevis is certainly one of the masters at applying Gestalt in organizations and this is (so far) his masterwork on the subject.I truly believe that you will benefit from reading this book if you do so reflectively and let it do its "magic" on you.

That said, Gestalt is highly experiential and needs to be learned through the hands, mouth, ears, and eyes.If this book piques your interest, I hope that is only the beginning of your inquiry.A very good next step will be hands-on training.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gestalt Equals Excellence
I thought this was a great read. This book began by first explaining how organizations can increase their awareness by utilizing principles found in the Gestalt approach. Even though I had heard of individuals speak of the Gestalt approach, I still did not fully understand what exactly it was. However, after reading the first few chapter of Organizational Consulting it became much clearer.

On page 15, it states that "Appropriate healthy behavior is that which enables people to recognize what they need at any given moment, and to obtain it." I thought that this sentence was profound in that individuals need to realize what appropriate healthy behavior is and compare that to what often happens in organizations or even sometimes groups. All too often in my work environment I have witnessed individuals putting up with inappropriate or unhealthy behaviors because that is simply what they have dealt with it for years. Reflecting back on what I have learned of change and being a "change agent", it seems that groups that most often can grow from the use of appropriate healthy behaviors are reluctant to break the cycle and change their behaviors, or the behaviors of others.

I appreciated the author's use of diagrams; especially when explaining the section titled; Intervention as Boundary Changing (located on page 50). Since I am a visual learner it is nice to see that author's choose to incorporate figures into their books. Also, within chapter fours section "Narcissistic Versus Collective Identity", I was drawn to the books notion of becoming a "carbon copy".

I thought one very effective tool for organizations to utilize was within chapter eight's section "On Meaning of Resistance in Organizational Settings". I thought this was an excellent chapter because the author included numerous case studies to depict how resistance is dealt with in organizations. I enjoyed how the author stated on page 143; "Those who "resist" are to be seen as "bundles of cycle energy", not as passive lifeless blobs." I thought that was a fantastic statement that summed up Gestalts, Cycle of Experience which outlines different parts of the cycle in regards to mobilization of energy and action. It clearly identifies that resistance may be useful in the decision making process.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-written and Useful
Nevis' book is thorough look at how Gestalt principles affect organizational consulting.I have not been a student of Gestalt ideas and methods since graduate school in a former life.Nevertheless it provides very good handles and tools for helping organizations learn what they need and to learn ways of acting in the future on their own. ...
