5-0 out of 5 stars an enabling, supportive reference source for therapists
This book is packed, without being written to intimidate. Sections are clearly headed, inviting use of the book as a reference.

As my understanding and interests in gestalt therapy evolve, so do different sections strike me differently.

Zinker is a coach, who leans over myshoulder as I consider my approach to helping others. The tone isunequivocal: encouraging and articulate.

Zinker has been been immersedin the field to such depths that his writing shows evidence of integrationof his findings. He covers gestalt therapy; a difficult topic to writeabout. He spells out his findings about working with families and does soin an aesthetic, almost spiritual.

Yet, I also find the book written withan intellectual rigour that invites revisiting. It's written in a can-do,leading edge manner. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Here Now Next is the first scholarly account of the origins of Gestalt therapy, told from the point of view of one of its chief theoreticians, Paul Goodman, by a man who knew him well. Stoehr describes both Goodman's role in establishing the principal ideas of the Gestalt movement and the ways in which his practice as a therapist changed him, ultimately leading to a new vocation as the "sociotherapist" of the body politic. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A loving, clear-sighted appraisal
In this excellent intellectual biography, Taylor Stoehr presents a loving, clear-sighted appraisal of Paul Goodman's contributions to the formulation and practice of Gestalt Therapy. With telling anecdotes from Goodman's life, and a deft handling of the psychotherapeutic concepts, Stoehr summons a vivid picture of the therapy's development.

This book is a welcome corrective to the tendency of Fritz Perls' larger-than-life persona to overshadow the contributions made by Goodman and others.

It is also a highly illuminating companion read for anyone tackling Goodman and Perls' psychological magnum opus "Gestalt Therapy".

For those looking for a capsule synopsis of Goodman's psychological work, I recommend Stoehr's pithy introduction to his edited volume of Goodman's briefer writings on psychology, "Nature Heals"

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for students of Gestalt Therapy
For anyone who is a student of Gestalt Therapy this book is a must. Stoehr's work gave me a deep appreciation for the intellectual legacy of Paul Goodman. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Creativity, traditionally seen as a special gift of remarkable and exceptional personalities, is considered in Gestalt therapy to be a quality of spontaneous adaptation in interpersonal processes, as well as an important ingredient of healthy social living. This revolutionary concept of creativityis approached in the book from three aspects: the theoretical foundations, the healing relationship, and applications to certain social issues, such as the couple's relationship, treating psychosis and understanding children's suffering. The authors are among the most relevant contemporary Gestalt psychotherapists and researchers. Their contributions, solid representations of American and European reflections on the theme, bridge a divide between continents and reflect the productive discourse among schools of Gestalt therapy today. Edited by two experienced Gestalt psychotherapy trainers, this book is not only addressed to professionals, but also to all those who make art and curiosity about human nature an important aspect of their lives. ... Product Description
Gestalt Therapy presents the method and theory of a challenging aproach to the study of man's personality and to the cure of the ills which beset him. The Gestalt outlook is an original, natural, undistorted approach to life - to man's thinking, acting and feeling. The average person, raised in an atmosphere full of splits, has lost his integrity and wholeness. The authors offer therapeutic techniques to heal the dualism and thus to help the person function as a whole. In a series of eighteen experiments, the reader is an active participant in the growth of self-discovery. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Couples therapy has long been regarded as one of the most demanding forms of psychotherapy because of the therapist's need to integrate psychodynamic insights with an understanding of systems dynamics. The contributors to On Intimate Ground share the belief that a phenomenological approach incorporating the insights of Gestalt psychotherapy leads to this integration and, with it, a dramatic increase in therapeutic power and flexibility. In 15 engaging chapters, they apply this approach to issues of intimacy, self-construction, power and abuse, shame, resistance, and growth -- and to such diverse populations as abuse survivors and their partners, remarried couples, gay and lesbian couples, and couples with character disorders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The way it's meant to be!
This is exactly how an anatomy book should be made! It uses figures in motion, figures of all ages and body types - not just idealised perfect slim people. This is the perfect anatomy book for animators and other artists - the illustrations of muscle groups twisting are worth the price alone!

If only there was a version in English...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
Great book, excellent photo refrence, artistic refrence, 2d/3d refrence. Clear diagrams for the painting, drawing, sculpture. covers everything.
couldn't get better with english books even the anatomy is described in a more designed format that is simpler for the reader to understand, yet is acurate.
Absloutley wonderful

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
even though i don't understand the German language, I have found the book to be excellent help because of the drawings, they are clear, they clarify the anatomy the form, the photos are helpful because they show the anatomy clearly. the children's photos are great because they help show you the child anatomy and that is not available in America any where. The drawing pages are just great. It shows the anatomy in different movement, not to mention they include extra artist work. It's enough anatomy in one book for a teacher's curriculum.
Highly recommended for any one, especially those who are starting, I mean if you want to start, you start at the top, not learn the bad stuff and they try to unlearn them ...
Right? Good luck ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars really disappointing
Having read and enjoyed a number of the other books in the "for Beginners" series, I was amazed at how vastly inferior this one was.The comments in another reviewer's one-star review about the apparent lack of editing by anyone familiar with the English language and the absurdity of the illustrations were right on the mark.In the other books I've read from this series, the artwork is used to illustrate concepts in an amusing yet informative way. Here, however, most of the sketches are crude portraits of Fritz Perls, or (not kidding) other people drawn with big, angry scribbles in place of their faces.

On the other hand, the lack of art illustrating concepts may very well be due to the almost total lack of any concepts to illustrate. Most of the book consists of a not particularly illuminating biography of Fritz Perls, then there's some other material about the history of gestalt therapy centers in various cities and countries (which looks like it may have come from a promotional pamphlet put out by one of those centers.)There's very little on the actual theory and practice of gestalt therapy itself.

Overall, readers looking for biography and history and not overlysensitive to horrible writing and artwork may find some slight use for this; readers hoping to understand something about gestalt therapy itself most likely will not.

1-0 out of 5 stars A complete waste of time
If you live in South America and can get the book in its original language, it might be a reasonable introduction to the subject at a really basic level. As it is, the book appears to have been translated into English using a very poor computerised translation program, and much of it is simply unreadable. On top of this, it's littered with spelling errors and typos, and in the copy I have, even Fritz Perls's name is misspelled on the back cover. The artwork is pretty risible too.Avoid.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the Whole - A Great Place to Start
Gestalt for Beginners, (gestalt, which is incorporating the whole) is a great and fun book for anyone starting out in psychology or looking more into the Gestalt Theory which was made famous by Fritz Pearls. AuthorSergio Sinay made a accessible approach inderstanding Pearls theories aswell as close to being able to apply them. Giving a wonderful biography ofFritz from his many downs in his life to his peak moments near the end.Explaining the Gestalt approach in a lucid and simple style, I found thisbook to be one of the best written books in the Writers and ReadersBeginners Books. Definately reccomended. ... Read more
