Product Description
With approximately 1 in 6 adults likely to experience a significant mental health problem at any one time (Office for National Statistics), research into effective interventions has never been more important. During the past decade there has been an increasing interest in the role that sport and physical activity can play in the treatment of mental health problems, and in mental health promotion. The benefits resulting from physiological changes during exercise are well documented, including improvement in mood and control of anxiety and depression. Research also suggests that socio-cultural and psychological changes arising from engagement in sport and physical activity carry valuable mental health benefits.

Sport and Physical Activity for Mental Health is an evidence-based practical guide for nurses, allied health professionals, social workers, physical activity leaders, and sport coaches. The authors provide comprehensive analysis of a broad range of client narratives, integrating theory and the latest research to explore the effectiveness of various interventions. The book offers readers detailed recommendations, suggestions, and ideas as to how sport and physical activity opportunities can be tailored to provide the greatest mental health benefits. ... Product Description
Philosophy and the Sciences of Exercise, Health and Sport answers these questions and others, in a unique interdisciplinary study that calls on researchers working in sport, exercise and health to reflect critically on the nature and aims of scientific enquiry in these disciplines. The book addresses the underlying assumptions and development of both the very idea of science itself and what shape scientific enquiries ought to take in the fields of exercise, health and sport.
Written by a range of prestigious and internationally respected philosophers, scientists and social scientists, each chapter addresses a key issue in research methodology. Questions raised by the authors include:
DT Do natural and social scientists need to understand philosophy of science?
DT Are statistics misused in sport and exercise science research?
DT Is sport science research gender-biased?
DT How do external and commercial interests skew professional guidelines in health and sport research?
DT Can scientists make claims without attempting to falsify as well as to confirm their theses?
This unique text serves notice to sport and health researchers to think philosophically about their subject and its scientific bases. It is essential reading for postgraduate researchers seeking to establish a sound theoretical foundation for their work. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Horribly organized and written but quite informational
Perhaps I'm not being fair on discussing how this book is being organized since so many of the ideas overlap so heavily... Nonetheless, this book seems to have almost no logical organization. Sometimes, when I'm reading a chapter, I'll feel like I'm reading something straight out of the last chapter. Not to mention the hierarchy within a chapter is chaotic at best. The use of the same size, same bold font for every heading makes it feel more like a poorly made wikipedia page on the topic than a logical chapter presenting the information. For god's sakes, change the font to reflect the hierarchy of the chapter. I've never seen a textbook fail to do so so miserably.

On top of this, it often feels like the authors just "threw" as much information in on a given topic as they could. Reading the little bullet points every few pages seems to almost conflict with some of the things mentioned in the book.

All in all, this is a VERY frustrating book to read and if you aren't somewhat interested in the topic already, it will not be an easy read. I have never used a worse textbook in my studies and I am in my second year of university, having taken psychology and exercise physiology courses with a lot in common with the course I use this for now.

If there's a way to avoid using this book (note to professors), please spare your class. You might understand it fairly well but students with less knowledge in the field will find it ridiculously boring and overwhelming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Performing Edge
Your Performing Edge is quite simply the best book i have ever read on the subject of improving mental performance. I am a keen amateur golfer with a 4 handicap and a great natural athelete. Like everyone, i was searching for that "miracle" to help me break through the next barrier - my mind. I have read and studied a number of other books and programs about improving mental performance. While many gave you the answers to "what" you need to do, none gave you the answers to "how" to improve. Dr. JoAnn Dalkoetters insights, lessons and tips are the most valuable resource ever produced on the subject. Combine this book with her Personal Coaching Program and you have, what i consider to be, the most powerful program available. I am now playing the golf i have always dreamed of. Your Performing Edge is a must read for anyone seriously considering improving their mental approach to atheletics, life, business or otherwise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exercising
Taking the first step is always the hardest but when you understand why that step is needed it makes all the difference. I do not believe anyone that states they "like" to exercise however the habit of exercising is accomplished when you truly understand and believe the benefits. This book is fantastic for understanding why, suggestions on types of exercise, and the mental benefits of exercise.Easy read.

We all know exercise does the physical body good, but the mind? Dr. Leith presents a solid case for exercise as means to better mental health, and provides the means to get there. Written in a manner anyone can follow and in terms anyone can understand. A great book if you need a push to get yourself going.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This anthology aims to throw a historical and a sociological light on the relation between sports, body culture and humanistic health science. More precisely, it intends to analyse how the health aspect from the beginning formed an important part when sports developed into a social institution in the second part of the 19th century and how it is still used in a legitimative fashion. In this connection, the gender aspect has to be taken into consideration as sports pertain to the two sexes in very different ways; thus much time was spent on debating whether sports were healthy for women while the health aspect was not discussed in relation to men.The basic idea of the anthology is that there are manifold cultural meanings and discourses surrounding sports, body and health. These meanings and discourses not only vary from time to time, but also function to mark the boundaries between social classes, races, nations, gender and ageing. Thus, the anthology provides an introduction to the cultural ambiguity and pluralism of the triplex: sports, body and health - and it rejects any notion of fundamentalism and universalism in the field. ...
