Book Description
Philosophy and the Sciences of Exercise, Health and Sport answers these questions and others, in a unique interdisciplinary study that calls on researchers working in sport, exercise and health to reflect critically on the nature and aims of scientific enquiry in these disciplines. The book addresses the underlying assumptions and development of both the very idea of science itself and what shape scientific enquiries ought to take in the fields of exercise, health and sport.
Written by a range of prestigious and internationally respected philosophers, scientists and social scientists, each chapter addresses a key issue in research methodology. Questions raised by the authors include:
· Do natural and social scientists need to understand philosophy of science?
· Are statistics misused in sport and exercise science research?
· Is sport science research gender-biased?
· How do external and commercial interests skew professional guidelines in health and sport research?
· Can scientists make claims without attempting to falsify as well as to confirm their theses?
This unique text serves notice to sport and health researchers to think philosophically about their subject and its scientific bases. It is essential reading for postgraduate researchers seeking to establish a sound theoretical foundation for their work. ... Read more

This digital document is a journal article from Psychology of Sport & Exercise, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Background: Understanding and influencing the determinants of physical activity is an important public health challenge. We used prospective data to examine the influence of individual, social, and environmental factors on physical activity behaviour, using regular running as the behavioural model. Methods: Over 500 middle-aged women completed two consecutive questionnaires in 2000 and 2002. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine factors predicting adoption of and regression from regular leisure-time running during the follow-up. Results: Women who frequently used behavioural change skills were more likely to adopt regular running (OR=4.0, CI=1.7-9.5). There was an interaction between the enjoyment of running and family support: those who rated enjoyment of running high and reported high family support were less likely to adopt running (OR=0.2, CI=0.1-0.5). Women who reported infrequent use of motives were more likely (OR=3.3, CI=1.6-6.9) to regress from regular running. There was an interaction between perceived health and the neighbourhood environment: those who perceived themselves to be in poor health and had an unattractive neighbourhood were more likely (OR=2.7, CI=0.9-8.3) to regress from regular running. Conclusions: Behavioural skills and enjoyment may be of particular importance for the adoption of regular activity; social support and an aesthetically attractive neighbourhood are likely to have a key role in encouraging maintenance. ... Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Psychology of Sport & Exercise, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Objectives: Little is known about what adults are thinking about and doing for health-promoting physical activity (PA). We examined the PA levels of middle-aged (40-55 years) and older men and women (56+) as well as their intentions for future activity. Methods: Random telephone surveys stratified for age, gender and geographic location assessed the weekly PA and plans for exercise among 40 adults. Results: Numerical data showed that activity patterns were age-determined and gender-patterned with adults aged 40-55 expending far more energy at both work and leisure-time PA than adults aged 56+. Self-talk strategies occurred among 88% of the respondents but a key strategy used by active people was to ignore activity self-talk and 'just do it' lest they talk themselves out of exercising. Conclusions: Inactive people already know that keeping active is important to their health and still do not participate. The group to target with positive triggering messages, assistance in getting started and reminders are those who already want to be more active but have not got a regular pattern established. Future research is needed to explore the impact of various kinds of social cueing. Messages such as, ''Just do it'' or ''Don't think about it'' may be all that is needed to trigger adults who are already seriously contemplating how to increase their PA. ... Read more

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Psychology of Sport & Exercise, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Objectives: To examine the antidepressant effects of exercise, and two previously proposed psychological mechanisms for this effect: self-efficacy and distraction. Method: A quasi-experimental design was utilized with participants (N=19) self-selecting to either a control or a 9-week exercise group. Dependent variables included severity of depression, coping self-efficacy, rumination, and distraction and were measured at study entry, 3 and 9 weeks later. Results: Exercisers reported lower depression scores than controls at Week 3 [9.3 (4.8) vs. 24.7 (12.0), p<0.05] and Week 9 [6.4 (5.4) vs. 21.8 (16.4), p<0.05]. Coping self-efficacy was higher among exercisers than controls at Week 3 [7.3 (0.9) vs. 5.2 (1.3), p<0.05] and Week 9 [7.5 (0.9) vs. 5.3 (1.8), p<0.05]. Exercisers ruminated less than controls at Week 3 [38.9 (1.8) vs. 46.5 (8.2), p<0.05] and at Week 9 [33.9 (1.2) vs. 44.0 (10.9), p<0.05]. Distraction was higher for exercisers at Week 3 [28.6 (1.2) vs. 23.6 (3.0), p<0.05] but not at Week 9 [27.7 (2.1) vs. 23.7 (5.3), p>0.05]. Partial correlations, controlling for baseline values of the independent variables, were conducted and a significant negative relationship between coping self-efficacy and depression was found at both Weeks 3 and 9. Conclusions: Exercise was associated with a reduction in the symptoms of depression. Support was found for coping self-efficacy as a potential mechanism; however, there was limited support for distraction as a potential mechanism. ... Read more
