Book Description
This sound, scholarly book continues to organize the diverse content of personality psychology in a meaningful way, taking care to present complex concepts in highly readable, accessible language. Using a single, overarching framework, the authors capture the flavor of each of four important conceptual strategies (psychoanalytic, dispositional, behavioral, and representational) and four fundamental issues (theory, assessment, research, and personality change) underlying contemporary personality psychology. The presentation of each strategy begins with an overview chapter that describes the strategy's basic assumptions and principles, as well as its respective intellectual school of thought. Then, after a more detailed presentation of the approaches that fall within the strategy, the authors conclude with a single chapter on the strategy's practical applications and limitations. ... Liebert and Liebert's Personality is superb.Using four major strategies (Psychoanalytic, Dispositional, Environmental, Representational), the authors delve into each major theory as if they themselves had been itsformulator. Then, they turn around and fervently critique the same theorythey had lauded only a few pages earlier, all the while relatingconnections among seemingly fundamentally distinct theories. The effect issensational. As someone who has very little background in Psychology andwho is boning up on the subject in order to pursue a graduate career in thefield, I thank The Liebert's for their hard work and diligent research.Ilook forward to the next edition. ... Book Description
Filled with updated research and findings, the Eighth Edition of Schultz and Schultz's THEORIES OF PERSONALITY gives students a clear and cogent introduction to this dynamic field. Organized by theory, this popular text discusses major theorists who represent psychoanalytic, neopsychoanalytic, life-span, trait, humanistic, cognitive, behavioral, and social-learning approaches, while demonstrating the influence of events in theorists' personal and professional lives on the development of these theories. The book also explores the ways in which race, gender, and cultural issues play a part in the study of personality and in personality assessment, and includes numerous examples, tables, and figures that further enhance students' understanding of the content. The final chapter, "Personality in Perspective," integrates topics explored in previous chapters and suggests conclusions that can be drawn from the many theorists' work. ... Read more

I have enjoyed this textbook because it gives a lot more information about the theorist and their theory develpment than many other Psychology textbooks. It is interesting to read about their lives, and understand more of the reasoning behind the development of their theories.

Horney revolutionalized analysis. She found societal roots for neurotic behavior and detailed how the intrapsychic processes get projected onto others in a way that could be understood. She changed the language of psychoanalysis -- she made it make sense and so helped thousands and thousands make sense of their lives.Cognitive therapy really started here.

Far from incomprehensible language and theories that seem much more far from realitythat the ones they are supposed to apply to, this book is an easy read foreveryone, and I could understand simple mechanisms that therapists takeyears to reveal. Book Description
Cross-cultural differences have many important implications for social identity, social cognition, and interpersonal behavior. The 10th volume of the Ontario Symposia on Personality and Social Psychology focuses on East-West cultural differences and similarities and how this research can be applied to cross-cultural studies in general.

Culture and Social Behavior covers a range of topics from differences in basic cognitive processes to broad level cultural syndromes that pervade social arrangements, laws, and public representations. Leading researchers in the study of culture and psychology describe their work and their current perspective on the important questions facing the field. Pioneers in the field such as Harry Triandis and Michael Bond present their work, along with those who represent some newer approaches to the study of culture. Richard E. Nisbett concludes the book by discussing the historical development of the field and an examination of which aspects of culture are universal and which are culture-specific. By illustrating both the diversity and vitality of research on the psychology of culture and social behavior, the editors hope this volume will stimulate further research from psychologists of many cultural traditions.

Understanding cultural differences is now more important than ever due to their potential to spark conflict, violence, and aggression. As such, this volume is a "must have" for cultural researchers including those in social, cultural, and personality psychology, and interpersonal, cultural, and political communication, anthropology, and sociology.

Book Description

An ideal text for advanced students and a timely reference for researchers and clinicians, this influential work examines how enduring dispositions or traits affect the process of aging and shape each individual's life course. In the process, it offers a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the Five-Factor Model of personality. From two well-known authorities in the field, the volume is grounded in a growing body of empirical evidence. Special attention is given to how research on the Five-Factor Model can contribute to the development of a comprehensive theory of personality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the `Big 5' model and personality development
Chapter 1 describes the well-known `Five Factor Model' (FFM) of personality traits and the robust result that in most people, personality changes little after the age of 30. Other theories of adulthood in the work of Freud, Jung, Erikson and others are also reviewed.

Chapter 2 is an interesting tutorial on the trait approach to personality, which the authors did so much to develop and popularise. Chapter 3 continues the theme by outlining the issues involved in measuring personality traits (self-report questionnaires vs. reports from other people, for example).

Chapter 4 notes that the time period of study for personality change through aging is many decades, so whether the object of study is a multi-aged sample from the whole population, or whether a defined group is followed-up through the years and decades, there are significant problems in identifying real (and individual-level) phenomena.

Chapter 5 explores aging and personality change across different cultures - are there universal principles, or is personality development culture-specific? The authors argue that the evidence firmly supports the former.

Chapters 6-9 look at personality development in the individual, review various hypotheses and outline the evidence for stability. The psychoanalytic tradition comes in for some rough handling here. Interestingly, the popular concept of `mid-life crisis' is shown to be a myth. Chapter 6, incidentally, perpetuates an astonishing misconception of Jungian type development (p.105). Jung is said to have hypothesised that in the course of adult psychological development, early psychological traits would be replaced by their opposite: e.g. introverts would later become extraverts. The correct Jungian proposition is one of development of auxiliary, tertiary and inferior functions into fuller consciousness, and a rounding of the personality, not its inversion! One feels perhaps a defensive reaction on the part of the authors here!

Chapter 10 describes a proposal to extend the FFM of personality traits to a full personality model. This involves introducing new entities (p. 188) such as biological bases (the physical body), the FFM traits themselves- called `basic tendencies', characteristic adaptations, a self concept, objective biography and the impact of external influences.

While the FFM is clearly incomplete, the proposal here seems less than compelling. There are many ways, in the absence of hard brain architecture evidence, to speculatively decompose the functional underpinnings of human personality, and the authors' model seems to give little weight to subconscious processes.

The book ends with a number of interesting discussions on the impact of personality on marriage, divorce and career - material heavily covered in the `psychological type' literature (Keirsey, Myers-Briggs, etc). The authors also discuss the `psychological profiling' of historical individuals based on biographical information.

In their concluding remarks, the authors more clearly show their biases. The Myers-Briggs approach, for example, may be ridiculed for its good-natured suggestion that all types are both natural and equally-favoured, but what are we to make of remarks such as this:"... is it perhaps only the open individual who sees and feels enough of life to make these discoveries and reach the real freedom that freedom from illusion allows" -( the context is about achieving a mature view of the realities of life)? Perhaps the authors, who appear to be Open and Conscientious, are nevertheless unaware of the pitfalls of universalising their own positive self-image?

The authors tend to perpetuate the bad habit of wrapping the shroud of `science' around their own approach, while denying it to their opponents - psychology is not yet physics, note! However, in summary, this is a very interesting book, packed with information, which is definitely worth acquiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME book
This is an excellent resource for anyone venturing into the forensic psychology field; I am in a graduate program and enjoy its use through my classes, but would have enjoyed it equally in undergraduate courses. A must have for someone who is unsure of whether or not to enter into this field; it outlines all of the pertinent tasks of the forensic psychologist. Well-written and chock full of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
who am i to be providing a review of weiner and hess?the 2 previous reviews were on the second edition, which, i agree, was probably "4 stars".the editors and authors of the individual chapters did an excellent job and the third edition is, in my opinion, an excellent improvement over the second edition.they have updated some information, providing greater necessary detail.most chapters read quite well.while no text can ever be comprehensive, i would like to have seen separate chapters on basic law, applications of psychology to disability law, miranda waivers, and contributions of psychology to public policy and legislation.to be fair, few forensic psychology texts cover all of these.while most chapters did a very good job of summarizing the topic and relevant research, i did not feel that this was a "how to" manual. it provides much of the background information necessary in the practice of forensic psychology that is useful for the clinician.so, i think that this is a very good book, overall, for students of forensic psychology as well as for the practicing forensic psychologist to have in his/her library for easy reference.there are a few areas where coverage nicely augments goldstein and weiner's handbook and melton et al.'s psychological evaluations for the courts. in my opinion, a nice addition to the literature.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
This book is very informative and you MUST own it if you are considering working in a field related to forensic psychology. Many of the chapters are well written and concise. However watch out for a few portions of the book--namely Chapters 12, 13, and 14.The authors of these chapters did a terrible job--you may need additional resources to understand the concepts. But overall this book is very good and (generally-speaking) easy to understand.

This unique workbook was written for the undergraduate Personality course where professors are looking for activities to help students learn and apply personality theories to real-life examples. The workbook is geared toward personality courses that are theories-based, as opposed to research-based. Because the cases explored are those based on normal behavior (as opposed to abnormal behavior), this workbook is especially useful. While most personality texts present the major concepts of personality theories, they don't help students apply the theories they have learned or to use the theories to understand other examples on their own. Book Description
The Five-Factor Model Across Cultures was designed to further an understanding of the interrelations between personality and culture by examining the dominant paradigm for personality assessment - the Five-Factor Model or FFM - in a wide variety of cultural contexts. Data from 40 cultural groups, ranging from Vietnamese Americans to Zimbabweans, are used to address a variety of issues: Is the FFM universal? Do personality traits have the same correlates in different cultures? How are mean levels of personality traits related to features of cultures, such as Individualism/Collectivism? Are stereotypes of national character accurate? The book is unified by the use of a single model of personality, and, in most cases, a single instrument, the Revised NEO Personality Inventory. Many of the chapters provide psychometric evaluations of new translations of this instrument. However, all chapters view personality assessment in cultural context. Diverse points of view are represented on how personality is related to culture, and a methodological chapter provides a critical assessment of the body of work. The editors provide an overview and a concluding chapter that evaluates findings in the book from the perspective of the bio-social Five-Factor Theory of personality. ... Read more

Book Description

Child psychotherapy is in a state of transition. On the one hand, pretend play is a major tool of therapists who work with children. On the other, a mounting chorus of critics claims that play therapy lacks demonstrated treatment efficacy. These complaints are not invalid. Clinical research has only begun.

Extensive studies by developmental researchers have, however, strongly supported the importance of play for children. Much knowledge is being accumulated about the ways in which play is involved in the development of cognitive, affective, and personality processes that are crucial for adaptive functioning. However, there has been a yawning gap between research findings and useful suggestions for practitioners.

Play in Child Development and Psychotherapy represents the first effort to bridge the gap and place play therapy on a firmer empirical foundation. Sandra Russ applies sophisticated contemporary understanding of the role of play in child development to the work of mental health professionals who are trying to design intervention and prevention programs that can be empirically evaluated. Never losing sight of the complex problems that face child therapists, she integrates clinical and developmental research and theory into a comprehensive, up-to-date review of current approaches to conceptualizing play and to doing both therapeutic play work with children and the assessment that necessarily precedes and accompanies it.

Since the publication of the now classic Cognitive Therapy of Depression by Aaron T. Beck and his colleagues, cognitive therapy has effectively been used to treat an expanding array of commonly encountered clinical problems. As the skills of cognitive therapists and the model's clinical techniques have matured in sophistication, the field has turned toward a more challenging problem--personality disorders. Well known to be a difficult population to engage, patients suffering from personality disorders do respond to cognitive therapy techniques. This volume, which emanates from the research and practical experience of Beck and his group, is the first to focus specifically on this diverse and clinically demanding population.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a patients view
As someone who is avoidant co morbid with OCPD spent perhaps 40 years depressed more than not before reaching out for any professional help I would like to say especially in the chapter on avoidants the book is pretty much dead on.The chapter on avoidants is the one I can most closely relate to but I see myself in others as well my OCDP us most apparent in hoarding issues a spot my therapist and I are having a hard time pushing me throughI've been working with a therapist for about a year and half now making progress even if it's slow.My therapist knows I am a person who likes to try and understand my disorders and reads as much material as I can.We have both learned a lot together she being my motivator and supporter. She has been outstanding doing her research to help develop plans of actions that have helped knock down some long standing self built walls. She likes to kid me that I could teach a graduate class in personality disorders with all the reading I have done.

To sum this up as a someone who has to deal with these issues as part of my daily life the book is right on with much of the way my thoughts/reactions are if I don't work actively to keep ahead of them to continue on my road to a happier life. And yes even as someone who came to therapy at a high functioning level in many aspects of my life I know at times I can be a frustrating client. But for me the knowledge that both my therapist and I are feeing increasing levels of frustration has been something I have been able to use to finally find the courage to knock down some long standing walls. So a special than you to those of you who choose to try and help those of us who present some special difficulties.

5-0 out of 5 stars came as ordered
The book came in a timely manner and arrived in new condition exactly as I ordered it. Very pleased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a great book. For example, the chapters on obsessive compulsive and passive agressive personality give some great direction for therapy.Knowing that an obsessive person fears making mistakes, that narcissism is part of obsessionality and that a passive agressive person fears loss of autonomy can really guide treatment well.

On the other hand, the treatment of narcissistic personality disorder is weak.It just concentrates on how the patient should learn that the world does not revolve around them.It ignores the shame, need for validation and driven quality that narcissistic patients have and is reflected in their cognitions. In other words, the case used to treat NPD is of the oblivious type and in practice it is more common to see the hypervigilant type of narcisit. As CBT becomes more psychodynamic, this issue will be better addressed, I anticipate.(The oblivious narcisists are more antisocial and the vigilant ones are more on the anxiou/dependant end of the spectrum - I forget who's classification this is).

5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical, directive strategy
Beck has done a great job describing a very pragmatic, common sense cognitive-behavioral methodology for the treatment of challenging personalities. The research he has done builds confidence in practitioners interested in and using these methods. Each personality style is well-described, and several strategies are provided for addressing these problematic dispositions. The book is very well-organized and easy to read. Assignments and case examples further add to the utility of this text.

Book Description

Psychopaths are difficult to ignore. They are involved in many of today's most serious problems: war, drugs, murder, and political corruption. As a construct, psychopathy has evolved far beyond its confusing origins in a melange of labels into an empirically measurable syndrome. The first text of its kind, The Clinical and Forensic Assessment of Psychopathy: A Practitioner's Guide, translates the robust findings of the past 30 years into applied procedures and methods for all those whose work brings them into contact with this difficult population in mental health, correctional, or court settings. Synthesizing the latest information on assessing psychopathy in children, adolescents, and adults, it offers "standard of care" guidelines for the assessment of psychopathy in general and the use of the Hare Psychopathy checklists in particular. It further:
* develops conceptual models for understanding the information processing and emotional experience of psychopaths;

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing Chapters
I ordered this book, but unfortunately held it for a future class.I discovered that it was an "abridged" version.I am missing the following chapters: 6, 8, 9, 10, and whatever might come after these. This has indeed downplayed a great rating and review.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Integrated Approach to Personality.
This extraordinarily well-written book encompasses an integrated approach to personality and its complexity. Needless to say, the field of personality is extremely intricate and dynamic. However, Pervin manages to provide a comprehensive yet lucid account of the most important approaches to personality. The strength of this book is that it integrates all the major perspectives. What is more, every chapter features key words, summaries and most importantly contributions and criticisms of each theory. The book is well structured and written in a way that captures the reader's attention. Thus, it is interesting, informative and extremely useful. Moreover, every theory gives its explanation to psychopathology and its possible causes. It should however be pointed out that this book is intended primarily for academic purposes. Nevertheless, I strongly recommend this book to all people who want to gain an insight into psychology at its best! After all, I think it is momentous to gain an insight into why some people develop maladaptive behavioral patterns and show systematic errors in thinking. Finally, this book attempts to answer the most difficult question pertaining to this dynamic field, namely: what factors contribute to the development of personality? Pervin clearly shows that interplay between biological and environmental determinants is necessary to provide an adequate explanation of personality. In my view, a theory that fails to intertwine both biological predispositions and environmental determinants with respect to personality is a flawed theory. Furthermore, a theory that cannot be disproved is a poor theory. In conclusion, this is truly an excellent book that integrates both descriptive and explanatory elements. ... Read more
