The Handbook is unique in its focus on evidence-based practice and its attention to the most pressing question asked by students and practitioners--"How do I do it?" The fourth edition is thoroughly revised and expanded to include the latest treatment innovations and empirical findings. 3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was disappointed to see Integrated Behavior Couples Therapy included in the book. Barlow admits there isn't much supporting evidence for this treatment. It may work great, but at this point can't be refered to as an evidence based treatment. My thought is a clinical handbook should include only those treatements which are EBT; meaning multiple studies and results validated and confirmed by neutral researchers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but...
I'm a licensed mental health clinician. I've used the previous edition of this text and have reviewed the current one. While it is very informative regarding cognitive behavioral treatments, there is a serious deficiency. Some of these 'manualized' treatments utilize patient handouts as a core tool of the work. These are not included in the text. For example, Miklowitz and the Bipolar chapter. If I purchase a text like this, I don't want to have to purchase even more books to get the tools, or engage in extensive scavenging to find them, or spend the time creating my own. That defeats the purpose of my purchase. Perhaps the necessity of having to additionally purchase the published books of all these chapter writers is a goal of the editors and authors, but it is not my goal and won't happen. It inclines me to return to journal articles (which is perhaps best anyway) based on the needs of my caseload, because tools, patient surveys, handouts, are usually included. Call to the authors and editors: Do you want your work to inform clinical practice or not? If so, please make your work fully and genuinely usable for the clinician's office. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars RMB
I am currently using this book in a CBT class.A great book and one of the best, after having purchased other treatment manuals as it is very useful and practical.Highly recommended as part of a student or practioner's reference library. It has good analysis and treatment recommendations, recommended assessments for each disorder, and case vignettes. I believe it should also be required reading in all abnormal psych/clinical practicum classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have if you're a therapist
This is an excellent reference handbook of the latest EBPs - I particularly like the two Unified Protocols that can be adapted to mixed emotional disorders since many patients suffer from more than one diagnosis.
Although this text isn't for absolute beginners, a novice therapist would be remiss in not having this text in his/her "tool box". It reviews current studies, literature - and then gives you step by step instructions for strategies. It doesn't, however, discuss the therapeutic relationship - so you have to be familiar with what needs to be done there, buy a different text or seek clinical supervision.
I'm a clinical social worker who is in private practice - I strongly recommend that other social workers purchase this if they want to have a competent practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars an essential

The goals of the Neuropsychological and Educational Approach to Cognitive Remediation (NEAR) are to provide a positive learning experience to each and every client, to promote independent learning, and to promote optimal cognitive functioning in daily life. Clients come to the Learning Center for 60 - 90 minute sessions at least twice a week. Guidelines for effectively administering therapy and running a successful program as a cognitive remediation specialist are set forth in the chapters of this book. You will learn how to choose appropriate software, recruit clients, perform intakes and assessments, and create treatment plans. Strategies for dealing with difficult clinical situations are also provided. it's been a month since I ordered the book, it was supposed to be here three days ago, and he hasn't even shipped it. by far the worst experience i've ever had on amazon. Don't even bother ordering from this guy, you'll never get it.

This edition was well done.Extra helps and case studies add depth to lectures. All Psych students could benefit from having this text in their collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done
As any undergraduate student probably knows, most college courses require a textbook; many of which are so painfully long and monotonous that it's really hard to stay focused on the material being read.'Abnormal Psychology,' on the other hand, was a pleasure to read.Halgin and Whitbourne have presented this subject in a style that's informative, yet clear and concise, and above all...interesting.Included are case studies that accompany each chapter, providing helpful examples of the psychological disorders being addressed (e.g., personality disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia, substance abuse, anxiety, depression, etc.), along with video clips in the cd-rom.In addition, the writing style itself makes for a smooth read. This book is definitely recommended for understanding abnormal psychology (and if you're a student I'd suggest the workbook too). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An empirically supported survey of disorders & How to work with People who have them.
This text offers an overview of various cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) techniques for a variety of psychological disorders.Relevant research and case studies are included.Etiological models, trouble shooting and therapy rationale are discussed.I enjoyed this book and found it very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great companion for the DSM-IV-RV
It is a great book. I t is easy to read and user friendly. I am a new graduate student and I wish all my books were as straight foward and easy to understand as the Clinical Handbook of Psychological Disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars fast, ontime, and new as promised
it was new as promised and delivered sooner than expected... this person is honest and does good business

4-0 out of 5 stars Evidence needs reinforcement.
The science moves slowly. Unfourtunately, some chapters are based in weak evidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Although pricey, comprehensive and worth the money.
I am currently using this book as a supplemental text for a course in Psychopathology I am taking at Cleveland State University.

The explanations of the various disorders are sometimes dense for the beginning graduate student, yet there is much to learn as each chapter not only discusses the etiology, but also various treatment approaches for each illness.

Would I recommend this book? Depends on what kind of student you are. If you are the type who is interested in learning only what is necessary to get through a course, this book will bore you. But if you are looking for a resource that will take you deeper, and be useful to you long after you leave grad school, then I would invest the money. Having a well-stocked professional library is essential to good practice. This book should be on that is on your shelf. ... Read more

Product Description
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has established itself as one of the most effective therapies for treating a wide range of behavioral problems. However, research and treatment in this field typically adopts a DSM driven 'disorder-focused' approach-researchers and clinicians target a specific disorder, try to understand its aetiology and maintenance, and try to develop more effective strategies to treat the disorder. This book proposes a bold and original approach to understanding these disorders, one that focuses on what they have in common. Instead of examining in isolation, for example, obsessive compulsive disorders, insomnia, schizophrenia, it asks-what do patients with these disorders have in common? It takes each cognitive and behavioral process-attention, memory, reasoning, thought, behavior, and examines whether it is a transdiagnostic process-i.e., serves to maintain a broad range of psychological disorders. Having shown how these disorders share several important processes, it then describes the practical implications of such an approach to diagnosis and treatment. Importantly it explores why the different psychological disorders can present so differently, despite being maintained by the same cognitive and behavioral processes. This book will give clinicians and researchers a valuable new theoretical base for assessing and treating psychological disorders. ... Read more

Great reference and guide for choosing the best assessment measures and for creating treatment plans for psychological disorders. The book is well researched and comprehensive of most Axis One disorders. It provides all the stats and measures that a person could ever want to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for busy therapists with little time to read
Time is a big issue for all therapists. Going through piles of books in search of a specific answer for a specific treatment for a specific condition can be painful and time consuming. This is where I feel this book does really well. Written by 2 leading psychologists in treating mental disorders (especially anxiety) it delivers practical and straight forward treatment plans in minimal time. Not only does it give step by step instructions for a particular psychological disorder, but it also warns therapists against potential pitfalls in treatment and how to help prevent them occurring. What's better is you don't have to read the book from cover to cover to become very knowledgable on a specific condition. Because it is set out according to each psychological condition as illustrated in the DSM IV, you just turn to the area you want to know about and save time. Be warned, this is a professional book and not for the everyday reader. If you are a professional therapist, then this is a must have to be included in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for therapists
As a psychologist specializing in treating anxiety, I found this book very helpful. It is an accademic text and aimed at professionals instead of the general public. With that said, it is very easy to read and gives great advice and information. The one area I found really interesting and helpful was the authors have compared many different treatment modalities for anxiety to see which is the most effective. These treatments range from CBT, EMDR, Personal construct theory, etc. This easy to read book is a must for any therapist treating clients suffering from anxiety. It's also fascinating from a researchers point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Introduction to the Speciality
Having been lucky enough to work with a wide range of ages in my nursing practice, I see the value of this book in delineating the very particular nature of dealing with childhood-specific presentations of psychological phenomenon. This book brought me up to speed on this matter when I switched from geropsychiatric and adult psychiatric care to pediatric psych. This book gave me the resources to understand many of the complications seen with the pediatric population and made the transition from adult to child practice much easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, research-based resource.
In studying psychopathology I have come to appreciate that there is a world of difference between how an adult presents, and how a child presents. I firmly believe that counselor training programs should focus on child psychopathology in addition to studying general psychopathology, and this book should be used as the primary text.

This book goes a long way in illuminating the differences in children's mental health issues. Child psychology is in another universe and the practioner would do well to consult this comprehensive resource that contains articles by leading practioners in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, brilliant discussion of a major social issue
Perhaps the most crucial social issue of our time is addressed in as comprehensive and skillful a manner as I have seen. Of particular value is chapter 21, "Impulse Control Disorders Not Elsewhere Classified,"wherein Steven Thurber and associate, clarify and successfully delineate along-time problem within the monumentally crucial arena of Disorders of theYoung. This specific chapter, in tandem with the overall approach of thebook, affords the reader the valuable distinction between generallyaccepted mythical and unsubstantiated beliefs (i.e., beliefs that arealmost "Hollywood-like" portrayals and "theories" ofhuman behavior), and scientifically demonstrated and supported realities ofthe human condition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Real and Caring Analysis and Potential Solution
This book is excellent. It's probably a classic or "the" classic (I don't know it's not my field).I read it many years ago, probably just after it was published, and I still remember most of its lessons.Anyone interested in "weight studies" should buy and read this book.

Reading a recent article on women's neurology I was astounded that the writers/scientists never once mentioned psychotherapy and the role of emotions and early childhood experiences in their literature analysis. It was as if anorexia and bulimia were genetic diseases, existing outside of culture.I know it's very hard to treat anorexia (bulimia is easier) but it is possible and Bruch outlines how to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars unique insight
Studies today revolve around body image and ignore the emotions and thoght processes vital to understanding eating disorders. Bruch brilliantly describes what it is to suffer from these wayward thought processes, andoffers an incredibly insightful and intimate look into the world of ananorexic. Excellent for those who are suffers and for those trying tounderstand. ... Read more
